Interesting is an understatement !! It is a wonderful enhanced natural bowl with so much to admire ... the colors, the cracks, and of course your keen eye and the foresight to do this turning. Very well done 👍🏆 Stay safe. -Mike
Just came upon your channel. Wow, what a peace. A true metaphor for life, in this "rotten log", turned into something of beauty. We all have scars and wounds on the outside, but what's on the inside?
I've done similar things but I'm working on making those rotten logs I found in my neighborhood and a big one I carried back from the trail I go to into tea light holders
You have great skills on the lathe! Being honest though, I’m already tired of the resin. Why not find a beautiful and unique piece of wood and turn that into something incredible? Beauty is in the eye.... Great video!
Jeff Parker. I think his choice of resin color did two things....it kept the color balance somewhat natural and it also filled in the holes that needed to be done to complete the bowl. Some people like the Art Nevo of colored resins...however, this one has a very natural look - job well done IMO
Gorgeous!!! I loved watching this "come to life"!! How long did it take you to learn how to do this? How long did this piece take to make? To me, this is just magic. Absolutely stunning.
Is that a spindle gouge you're using? If so, I HIGHLY recommend you invest in a good bowl gouge if you don't already have one. Turning end-grain can lead to a catch and the spindle gouges usually have a flat tang -- a catch puts a TON of stress on the steel going into the handle which can have catastrophic results. A bowl gouge, on the other hand, is usually round bar stock and much stronger, able to handle a catch without the danger of the tool breaking. The final bowl is beautiful!
You have a point but a spindle gouge is for spindle work. More importantly is technique and sharpening. He is going against the grain when he is hollowing and a bowl gouge doesn’t work there either; that requires a completely different tool like a Mike Hunter tool.
Beautiful bowl ! Funny, the first time I tried turning in 8th grade woodworking class, I loved it. We all made candlesticks .lol., Then why did I become an auto tech ?!! Worst decision of my life.
Beautiful piece!! I have been working with wood and resin myself. It is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you will end up with!! What type of pad were you using to apply the finish and what type of finish did you use? Again, great work!! Thanks, Mike
When you make bowls like that. Can you eat out of them. Are is there anything special you got to do to it to be able to eat out of it . Or put soups in it. Just wondering. Have a nice day. And nice bowl. 😀👍
I am just guessing, but if I am wrong, I am sure someone will correct me. Nontoxic, food safe woods, resins, dyes, and finishes are available, but we don't know what was used here. Nontoxic means it won't hurt us. Food safe means that food won't hurt it. You may have seen dishes that had a battle with the acid in tomato sauce and lost. It takes a hard and comparatively thick finish to allow the surface to survive silverware. Unless he did a few more coats of finish off camera, that bowl will get scratched up the first time someone uses a fork in it. If a scratch gets to the wood, then bacteria can start growing inside. That is bad. Many wooden bowls are only suitable for food that you grab and eat. For example: apples, cookies, and nuts. Most wooden bowls aren't dishwasher safe, microwave safe, or oven safe, but I am sure it can be done. Poison oak is an example of a wood that shouldn't be used with food. Most woods aren't an issue. For commercial use, the wood will have to be able to be routinely sterilized with whatever your local health department requires. So those bowls have to withstand a certain level of heat and/or some nasty chemicals.
@@hamjudo well thanks. A yes are no would have worked good. I know what non-toxic and food-safe is you get a lot of products that are like that now . It's just when you see other people do this wood work at home like that . You wonder if they go that extra step. So they can use the bowl are vase or whatever it is they make . Anyway I was just wondering right. Have a great day .
Stunning! Love the resin color you went with. Compliments the tones in the wood perfectly.
One of the best heartwood bowls I've seen yet!
That’s just an outstanding piece, loved the resin tint too, great work
Wow, it's so beautiful! A piece of art! I loved it! ❤
It is a true talent when one can take a rotten log and turn it into a bowl with the help of some resin! :D Well done!
Nicely done, sir. Really nice workmanship on this bowl.
The color of the resin fits well with the wood. An interesting combination. Well done.

Parabéns, uma peça linda!.. sou hobbysta tenho um torno de madeira, pretendo um dia fazer uma peça com esse padrão de qualidade.
Any idea what the wood is? It’s amazing what can be made out of a discarded piece of wood. Well done.
An old piece of junk turned into art. Really nice piece!
That is spectacular

Bacana! Nota, 10! Parabéns.
Помню в школе на уроке труда, заготовку сначало подготавливали чтоб меньше колебаний было. И только после удаления лишнего устанавливали в станок.
I like how it turn, I have seen you use epoxy someone the time. I like to see you do more bowls. Also have to ask what color was it added in this?
Great result, really nice finish, cheers John

Excellent result. I didn't see a pressure pot. Any problem with air pockets? What finish did you use.?
I don't use a pressure pot (Don't have one😔). Luckily there weren't any air pockets and I used Wood Wax for the finish. :)
Pura chingoneria👍

Dude,,,,that is just awsomw
me: [tries to focus on beauty and craftsmanship put into this bowl]
also me: [can't stop thinking about how long the fingernail is on his left pinky]
Did you dry the wood or doesn't it matter with the resin?
Real skill

Wow... Bagus.

That is dry wood, not rotten.
I have plenty of rotten logs. I just can’t afford the resin.
