Woodturning: Epic Live Edge Burl!

- Thank you so much to all my subscribers, commenters, and viewers! This is my 13th filmed project. For a fairly simple concept, it seemed to take me forever to execute. Some things are worth taking time to figure out... In this case, simply getting used to the shape of the live edge and trying to avoid any catches or bad tool approaches was a fun learning process. Fortunately, the piece did not end up taking flight.
Since it will be Christmas 2019 by the time this video goes up, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. May you find cheer, relaxation, and inspiration!

ok wait.... is this guy turning wood without blue resin? call the cops!
Great comment, thanks!
Phenomenal as usual!
There something therapeutic about watching woodturning.
Thanks for your comment, Steve! You're so right!
Especially with the great music! What was the piece that started after the 2 hour wait around 6:00 or so. Nice work!
Martin Elliott ‘No End in Sight’ by Martin Hall
I feel so good after watching these videos. The craftsmanship and the music has an meditation inducing feeling...
When you see how much goes into it, you can understand why such items are so expensive.
Thanks Jake!
And every piece is a one off, you can make a new one to the same specs but the wood pattern will always be different
The grains and textures of this bowl are simply outstanding - I love it! You have incredible foresight to begin with a piece of wood and create something so beautiful. Great Job!
Thank you Vic!
I would love to have this beautiful object in my world. This is a wonderful celebration of that original burl. This feels somehow alive.
Haha, you have to laugh. What are we all doing on Xmas morning? Watching woodwork videos !!!! Merry Xmas mates, from South Western Australia.
So true, Stewart! Merry Christmas from Maine!
LOL. Your so right. I guess now that the kids are grown, I have more time xmas morning for this stuff. Enjoy your Holidays.
I wasn't I was ill even missing Christmas dinner. But at 8:16 it looked very spooky
Very beautiful bowl.....
Thanks! Cheers!
The illuminated turning put me into a trance. Finished piece is worthy of art show.
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful music!! I had to watch again as I fell asleep the first time thru. But great bowl.
Beautiful, David!!! This piece really accents the grain of the wood itself, well done! I don't know if this is possible, but on a future piece, could you do a slow-mo close-up shot of the wood turning as you finish it? That would be neat to see!
Thanks very much! That’s a great idea!
I'm in tears, sitting here watching you, David. Th is so beautiful. I'm 78 years old and have absolutely no proficiency with woodworking and/or things mechanical. Thank you so much for this video. I subscribed and can't wait for he next video I will rest happy tonight.
Thanks so much Joe! I really appreciate that. Cheers!
Joe
I'm 75 and have always had trouble working with wood until I started turning 3years ago on a old/used Delta Midi lathe!
We're never too old to learn!
You're so right! Always learning, always growing!
If your eyes are ok and your hands don't shake you're never too old. But you might find it helpful to wear gloves. A lot of mature-age woodturners find the little flakes of wood tear into their skin - our skin gets thinner and more fragile as we age.
David I love the way you start your videos, first a little piece of your beautiful surroundings and then you start the business part. This burl bowl you made is outstanding magnificent and spectacular, what a stunningly beautiful piece of wood. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
Thanks so much, Kobie! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Would love to get my hands on a piece of wood like that.
I found this piece on ebay. In fact, ebay is one of my favorite turning wood sources online.
That’s what she said...
Try Gilmerwoods.com
That piece turned out awesome... Really loved how it turned out. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much, Melissa!
Merry Christmas David! Excellent work!
Thanks so much, Dan! Merry Christmas to you as well!
David beautiful bowl. I am a little confused how you re chucked the bowl. It seems you started out turning between centres but the you must have re chucked it as the tail stock is removed in the second half. Did you turn a tenon and the sand it off at the end? Thanks for inspiring a new turner
Thanks Paul, yes I turned a tenon and sanded it off, not sure I showed the full sanding process dry. Good luck in your turnings!
Hi David...beautiful bowl....awesome turn and video...I would kill for a burr like that...pity you can't cut out the middle to use on another project....great job...All the best.....Andy
Thanks very much, Andy! Yeah, I really wish I had a bowl saver jig. It cost me $67 on ebay, and it was a Christmas gift to my grandmother. Cheers and Happy New Year!
Wow that's a fantastic burl! What's that tool at 10:59? That's a great piece, David, I love those golden browns. :)
absolutely excellent work as is all your other videos you are a very inspiring wood turner
Thank you Barbara!
Preciosos trabajos, muchas gracias por compartir. Espero pronto retomar las enseñanzas de mi abuelo (RIP) y aprender más sobre trabajar la madera. Congratulation, Greetings from Costa Rica
Seems a shame to take a piece of figured wood and turn it into chips and sawdust. But it's nicely done. By the way - there is no S in Howard Feed'n'Wax...…..
Good to know. Thanks.
Good morning David. I really enjoy watching your channel. I was curious. Is it possible to turn petrified wood?
So beautiful I'm so addicted to your video's!! It doesn't have to be fancy to be spectacular! As always your loyal fan 😀
That is an amazingly beautiful piece. Couple questions if I may as I am a somewhat new turner barely coming up on a year now of turning. Through all the research and watching turners as yourself I have heard it's best to sorta turn downhill but I noticed while turning out the inside you went from center outward thus going up hill. Is that a safety method due to the jagged nature of the edge?
Also, noticed the tip of your woodburning tool, very different from anything I have. Where did you get that tip?
All in on, you are a very talented turner, would greatly appreciate and advice, help and or comments on my turnings.
Tim "Moon Woodworks"
Tim, thank you so much, and great questions! The main reason why I used a pull stroke on the inside instead of a push stroke was purely because I did not want to get a catch or damage the live edge. So using that method was the only way to creep up to the live edge without starting to cut it too deeply. I am still learning on my technique with hollowing. Always learning!
I used a pretty cheap pyrography tool that came with a bunch of different tips. amzn.to/2O2m8d3
Cheers! and Congratulations on 1 year! I just graduated 1 year of turning as well!
I'll definitely be checking out more of your vids.
David
such a lovely bowl, so warm and cheerful
MAGNIFICENT,,, just simply MAGNIFICENT.
I really enjoy your videos,,, sweet creations, nice music, great camera angles and no overly long captions. You have the knack for this venue.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. 🎄☃️🤗💞
Thanks very much! I truly appreciate that. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
A beautiful piece of wood in the first place, but you absolutely did it justice and then some. Outstandingly beautiful.
My favourite one David. Keep it up!
Thank you, Chris!
This is exactly why I want a lathe, ideas are endless. Great Job!
Thanks Chris! Good luck!
So relaxing and what was that music?
Thanks! All of the music came from Epidemic Sound, link in description I’d you’re interested. ✌️
Beautiful job, dude. Really amazing work! 😃
I didn't know you channel... Just subscribed! 😃
Some day I want to have a lathe as well! 😃
Thanks so much! I subbed to you as well!
@@DavidAdamsen Oh! Nice, thanks!!! 😃
100% result! Cool)
Thanks!
I just finished watching all your videos, good work
Wow, thank you so much! I really appreciate you! ✌️👊
@@DavidAdamsen your welcome good work and it seems you have photography talent too
Thanks, I appreciate that! Photography has been a passion of mine since I was a kid.

Beautiful Everything!!!!!!! Cheers....
Do you wear a mask and goggles while doing this? So much sawdust!
Yes, I always wear a dust mask and a face-shield. Can’t be too careful!
@@DavidAdamsen have you ever gotten a splinter? Those wood pieces are like high velocity projectiles! Haha
Thank you for showing your fabulous work!
Thanks Scott!
Not at all what I imagined it to look 👀 like....absolutely GORGEOUS 😍
Thanks Kelli
I just harvested a maple burl. Do you suggest I let it dry before turning or turn it green?
Definitely let it dry before turning. If you do choose to turn it green plan on twice turning it. The norm for twice turning is to turn the wall thickness 1/10th the diameter of the piece. Once it dries you’ll get much more consistent results. Cheers and good luck in your projects!
@@DavidAdamsen Thank you for the information. I've turned before but never a burl into a bowl. I'm excited ready to try this but will take your advice to dry it out first.
In the basement it goes until next winter.
@@maddawgnoll Is there a video on how to do that?
You seem to have a gentle touch while cutting away the wood
Thanks David! I've learned from mistakes to be patient. Cheers!
I'm so happy you added that decorative touch to the pedestal portion of the foot. That simple touch really makes it stand out!
Thank you so much!
Stunning work again. I enjoy watching your pieces come to life so much! Merry Christmas! The illuminated bit was mesmerizing for me.
Thanks Amy! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Wow! New subscriber here... your videography is unique and very pleasing. I'm looking forward to more!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Looks like you were having fun David. That was a beautiful piece of maple burl. Had a lot going on for it. Great chatouncy in the grain, and great job in turning and finishing David. Artistically it’s pleasing to the eye, nice diminsions over all, but perhaps the pedestal part David could have been just a little smaller to bring out overall design even better, just opinion David, but it absolutely gorgeous!!!! Oh got your new number!!!..... merry Xmas David to you and loved ones!!!!

Custom Woodturnings
Thanks so much, John! It was a good learning experience for sure! I really like that suggestion. In my mind when planning this shape, I probably over-estimated how off-balance the live edge wood make it, so the base probably didn't need to be that wide. Cheers! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Как говорят у русских дело мастера боится! Я пытаюсь работать с кедровыми капами , на них текстура плывет .Обычно я долблю в ручную но точить люблю ,но наэто пока нет времени, мастера и его семью с наступающим !
Very nice work, beautiful bowl and also great video! Liked the merging of turning with the music. But man, you could use a lazy susan :) Thanks
Haha, thanks. I really do need a lazy susan.
How much would this item sell for?
That has yet to be determined as it is currently available in my Etsy shop.
Another nice wood turning. Excellent!! Great video showing small town Christmas scenes. I like it. Not only do you turn nice pieces of wood, the video presentations are excellent.
Merry Christmas to you and your viewers.
Thanks very much! It's a lot of work, but it's a work of love! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Once again, a masterpiece. I love a live edge like that. There are lots of incredible wood turners on here but your the only one I subscribe to. Your editing and music add so much to the experience. You’re quite the artist. Thank you.
Thanks so much Jeff! I appreciate you! ✌️ I have learned a ton from other woodturners on RUclips. It’s a great community of some really talented artists. 👊
Jeff Parker
Have a look at Andy Philips RUclips channel he’s based here in the UK does some really great stuff👍
I agree you are by far the most artistically inclined of all I watch.
Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks Rob!
A wonderful piece of art work!
Thank you so much, Mr. Chung! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🤩
Like your lathe machine..
Thanks Eugene!
Dear David, I stumbled over your wood turning videos and simply admire how you work with the finest woods and also your vision for each project. My special moment is always when you apply oil to the surface. The wood starts to shine as if it comes to even more and brighter life. I also got to see some wood which I didnt know of. So pretty. For me thats art: to have the vision, the power, the craftmanship and the corresponding tools to make such things like you do. Your videos have also changed my perspective for any wooden object like lamp post, wooden bowls,or any other such item. Time isnt essential when crafting. I know that out of my own experience. But I craft with copper wire, beads, gemstones and wool. Please keep posting your videos. Thank you. Please stay healthy and take care.
Thanks very much Stephanie! I really appreciate it!
Great piece David! Wonderful burl and very nice tool work. I was very interested in the finish you put on. I am subscribed!
Thanks so much, Tom! I appreciate it!
turned out great looks really beautiful . a very merry christmas from my family to yours my friend .
Thanks Dark! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Nice work, but more information would be appreciated. Size of the forstner bit, why you use the tools you selected at various times etc.
Thanks for your comment, Albert! Sometimes I forget to put in all the tool names and sizes. I'll try to add in more of that in future. Thanks for the feedback though!
One of my favorite parts of your video is right at the beginning where you sharpen the tool...
Thank you! It’s a crucial step!
@@DavidAdamsen Just wondering.. Is there a generic term for the various gouges, parting tools etc? Are they chisels or what?
snevel I think chisels would accurately describe them. I have actually used some of them as chisels to manually carve out the center on a piece.
@@DavidAdamsen thanks 👍
Very nice work. Came out awesome. Belated Merry Christmas for a neighbor from Massachusetts.
Thanks Charles! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!
One very stunning Maple Burl bowl David excellent job turning, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much, Gary!
Wow, beautiful job 👍❤😎
Thank you! ✌️
Saw some of his items on Etsy. Realized that his art and skill is too expensive for me to buy. His creations are certainly worth the prices. I love this bowl.
I appreciate your comment Glenda. Stayed tuned though! I will be turning a giveaway project in my next video!
enjoy watch your hand. music is relax
Absolutley Stunning !
Thank you, Graham!
Great video!!! Very well done!!👍👍👊
Thanks so much, Jake!
David - I just stumbled across your videos and really enjoy them. Nice work.
Thanks so much, Jon!
Xmas pressie for some lucky so snd so?
Like from the Russia
Thank you from Maine! ✌️
I think that it would be really cool to use a variable speed strobe light. That way you can work on your piece while it looks like it’s sitting still.
That would be a cool visual effect for sure!
The bowl is so unique with the live edge. I really like it. If it’s not on ETSY, does that mean it is most likely sold already? Thanks for your time.
Thanks Elaine! Yes, the bowl sold on Etsy a week ago. ✌️
Your videos are the best!
Thanks Joseph! I appreciate you!
Absolutely amazing 💜💜💜💜💜
David that very pretty you do fine the best wood ,but one that bother me that I wish you do get your thumb a different way of something would go you wood loose that thumb that would be bad,. Thankyou for showing your work.
Thanks for your comment and feedback. Can you specify when in the video you're describing? Thanks.
Beautiful. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks you for sharing.
Thanks George!
I really like what you did with the burl. Have you considered a product by the name of Woodoc? Absolutely the best oil/wax in the world.
Thank you! I’ve never used that, I’ll have to look it up! ✌️
Amazing burl loved the look of it. I always know you and your artistic ability (both wood, music and video technicality) never disappoint.
Another beautiful piece off your lathe
Absolutely beautiful work. Really enjoyed your sharing that experience with the Maple Burl. My favorite next to your Koa project.
Thank you so much!
Absolutely beautiful work! Subscribed with no hesitation. Thank you for showcasing your skills and artwork through this medium!
Thanks so much, Douglas!
What is the name of this tree.
It's a very good work. Congratulations greetings from Turkey.

Una hermosa pieza, bellas vetas de color
Your videos are so relaxing and beautifully done on top of the amazing woodturning you do. Thank you for the lovely experience.
Thank you so much Elizabeth! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
David, thank you for sharing your projects. We need as much beauty in the as possible. Very, very beautiful.
Wow! Outstanding work, best burl bowl I have seen by far, you bring out the best in each piece, great watching you
Thank you so much, I appreciate that!
And absolute joy to watch you work.
I too would want this piece in my house. This is , I think, one of your best creations.
Thank you, Christina!
Very beautyfull!
Thank you!
Congratulation!!!! It's beautiful
Thanks Nicolas!
Lindo! Lindo! Parabéns! !
Thanks!
My jaw is still on the ground after watching your incredible work! Just amazing!
Thanks Cheri! Merry Christmas!
Have you ever thought about getting a vintage Oliver lathe? I ask because all the other stuff is so high-end it makes the lathe itself look like a toy!
I have never heard of that lathe! I’ll have to look it up!
David, you are so creative, gorgeous piece once again. Beautiful music also, so lovely to listen to while you work your magic. Hi from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks Sue! Glad you like the music, sometimes I think music in woodturning videos can tend to put some people off. But I try to find good songs 🧐 cheers from Maine!
Hey Sue - do you woodturn? I'm in western central Victoria with a woodheap full of yellow ironbark and I'm not fit enough even to cut it up for firewood. I'd love to see someone turn a piece of it on RUclips!
Mama Simmer Plays Hi, no I don’t, but am in awe of David, he is so talented.Thank you so much for the offer though. Bless you. Where in Victoria do you come from? I live near Colac Victoria. Hope your staying virus free?
Hey David... How about taking those maple burl cut offs and maybe a few other scrap pieces of other wood and mixing them together with some black resin & creating something resembling a mixture of wood & volcanic glass, if that makes any sense....👌😋
That's a really cool idea, George!
I’ve seen other videos where people mix resin with gaudy greens & reds but I believe using a black or white resin would reveal something much more elegant & beautiful!
Luxurious work.
Cheers Valery!
I really like that you do such light clouted staining. So many other videos you watch, they have this beautiful piece of wood with all this interesting patterns and they just drown it out in these really dark stains. Great job as always.
The finished piece is absolutely beautiful! I love the live edge of the bowl, but I have a feeling of regret that so much of the bowl's interior was lost forever -- the live edge surface was gorgeous, sad to see it disappear into a thin circumference of the bowl but what else can one do if turning a bowl?
The bowl turned out amazing. Im having to watch videos instead of doing my own turnings since my lathe broke. And your videos are my favorite to watch
Thanks so much, Logan! I hope you're back up and turning soon! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
10:18 I was really tense when the music and timelapse stopped that this was going to be another disaster where the edge gets broken off. Don't scare me like that with your edits, good sir!
Aww, sorry about that Valtteri! Cheers!
Soo amazing
Cheers Nathan!
I’ve seen many of your videos. You put so many things on the wood, what are all of them for?
Thanks Aaron, I tend you use denatured alcohol and sanding sealer on everything, which preps a consistent and clean surface for finishing. The grit paste is purely to improve the smoothness of the wood, and the wax is meant to build up the finish.
