Biffa is so used to move it, he forgot he can lower a road with terraforming
Or use a tunnel! :D
26:51
*landscaping
and at the same time it shows how crucial that mod is to this game, along with TM:PE xD
I just started this scenario myself! Excited to see what you do with it. I solved most of the traffic by intentionally not upgrading the roads as much as possible, by removing most of the freeway connections into the city, replacing a lot of it with a Bus Rapid Transit system between the airport and the city using a lot of the right-of-way and a train between the two main downtowns.
not something i would do tho, but sounds like it worked. there is a lot i would do to help future proof the city, but at the same time solve traffic.
rapid bus is something i would do, but not to select points like from downtown and the airport.
a zoo, campus, timber/farming/fishing industries i would add in later on, but i would basically make 2 freeways and add in 4 lane arterials.
the first would be making the one through town into a 4 lane 2 way freeway with most of the roundabouts removed. the more beautiful ones would be better served as service interchanges.
3 arterials would be established at least. more arterials would probably be added but at least 3 would be the standard.
followed by a bypass to the north of the city, going from the bridge to the last roundabout junction on the other side that serves 2 highways that is a super-2
then i'd put more energy into establish the rapid bus system the 4 lane arterials would basically meet in the bigger downtown to also serve as rapid bus lines. there would be collectors that would be tight 4 lane as well to take people to the arterials and would be rapid bus lines on those as well, along with 4 bus stations in each corner of the first city, followed by the second having a regular bus line to the main one.
then i'd put in the future proofing. all the freeways tolled, the automatic tolls turned on, and the rest of the time would be establishing tourism and future proofing the local industry with possibly a cargo airport near the northern industrial area.
As a console player its oddly satisfying to see Biffa face how challenging, fiddly snd annoying the detailed design stuff is in Vanilla on Roads
I can relate 😂😂😂😂
I've just got into it even though it's in it's late stages and the roads are having me pull my hair out 😂
Lol, Biffa sounding so happy after the bypass worked is awesome. Playing on console with most of the DLCs and no mods, I can tell you dealing with traffic isn't easy. Bypasses work pretty well.
There's definitely an art to solving vanilla traffic, especially on console
His problem was the buses stopping just after the roundabout though. Could have put in a bus lane and solved it easy
Biffa: I was going to suggest, if you haven't already recorded part 2, that you build a bypass for the city, running from the roundabout next to the solar power plants at the top of the map, passing through the edge of the swamps, to the basic junction you created to replace the peanut junction near the bottom. From there consider a metro to link the port area near the big bridge , via the dense downtown/city centre area to the industrial area in the north, the buses should then be able to deal with the low density suburbs. Next tackle the pollution in the swamp by moving/replacing the sewage outflow pipes with the most modern system available in the scenario. Finally in order to get the population up it will be time to bite the bullet & use your newly acquired land to the north to build more low density suburbs.
any more rail (metro, trams, trains, maglev, and others) and you would be dooming the african city later down the road once the gold rush ends.
I did a bypass along the railway between the points you mentioned. Sorted out the rest of the highway via city, removed some access in the curve which were just on and of ramps on each side. Added 8 bus lines. Won the scenario with 89% traffic.
I never thought I would ever see Biffa struggle with this game... The day has come. Well done, Biffa 👏👏👏
It seems to me that some of those roundabouts need to be proper interchanges.
Agreed.
Exactly or all of them especially in the industry. Vanilla mechanics on roundabouts is atrocious
Ya I'm shouting at the TV like I'm watching a football game.... are you blind biffa? Just connect the highways together and make the round-a-bouts the exits... ain't to the end yet but it is hard to watch... gttn emotional over it. Thanks biffa
Absolutely. Roundabouts are crappy when one or two routes through them are so heavily loaded, especially if these routes cross each other. Better to build a bridge for crossing, imho.
Hey Biffa. I’m actually from Gambia and live in gambia.. what a pleasant surprise when I tuned into this episode … love it
😁
50:56 After all the chaotic highway upgrades, I got a huge smile from "right then! down here... this is a nice little roundabout". So wholesome 😀
😁
I'd like to see you do this map but with all your mods turned on.
Ohh yeah, that would be very interesting and funny!😊
I like that idea
(As Biffa builds his roundabout like a lunatic) "It's not perfect, but it'll work." Er, okay, Biffa, if you say that it will work, it will work... 😆
This is similar to those awful newbuild estates in the UK - no services, poorly laid out and high crime since there isn’t much to do
Some thing in Australia. And they're cul-de-sacs so at 7am traffic is backed up in residential areas trying to get onto the highway.
@@DrDribs One way in, one way out
You've forgotten your roots Biffa, so many of your issues with the highway management were as a result of you forgetting your lane mathematics! 1 out 1 in would have solved many of your issues with the overpasses! In the case of the roads that offered turnarounds after the roundabout, leaving them as 1u roads rather than 2u roads that only had 1 lane being used would have been better.
I was about to mention this, you saved me the job :)
I think he's so flummoxed over the lack of mods that his brain is working overtime trying to remember how to do things in vanilla.
Heya Biffa. Nice episode. Although Vanilla games always give me nervous twitching ^ ^
You know that you actually ignored lane mathematics for your highway?! And why not use the roundabouts as on/off ramps and raising the highway above it?
Can't believe I forgot the lane mathematics!!!
I'm only 5mins in, and is anyone else shouting "PAUSE THE GAME BIFFA"
I'm mostly shouting "ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING", dude's just panning around and talking to himself without actually putting anything down...
It's a scenario challenge. It works better if you think first 😉
No
Remarkable city recreation, I immediately went to Google maps to see the real one. Never would've known it even exists
Right! And the CS community is so talented at recreating real-world places too, I knew exactly which way to rotate the Google Map at any point while following along.
Lol Biffa you gotta just extend the highway over the top of those roundabouts rather than making all of those bypasses. Love your shows, nice work on the city today
Yeah, I was expecting him to do that from the beginning.
Would it have been easier( or maybe just neater) to build bridges over the roundabouts with off-ramps onto the roundabout instead of bypasses?
I was yelling that at my monitor. It hurt to watch :(
I definitely want to try this, but I think I will keep it simple with 6 lane throughout the city, drop the roundabouts for junctions with traffic lights for turning cars, and setup by-pass for the main direction to keep traffic flowing.
These roundabouts are a pain. Maybe they should be interchanges? Also never heard Biffa stressed before.
This is what I was thinking, especially since he upgraded the roads to hwy ones
😁
This just makes me appreciate traffic manager even more. I started off with mods right away because of Biffa, saved myself a lot of frustration I think
this is actually a decent city from the start. Having only seen the map afer loading, I wonder if small throughlanes/bypasses at the arterial roundabouts might already be enough to increase the traffic flow?
I would just run the highway as bridges over the top of the roundabouts with on/off ramps connecting them. Maybe even just elevate the whole highway with lots of local roads and footpaths going underneath aswell
Biffa: "I'm trying to make this as pretty as possible, honest!"
Also Biffa: Has all snapping options off literally the entire video
Thanks Biffa - I love scenarios -- so much more like real life to have to deal with someone else's builds.
Seeing a pro struggle with vanilla mechanics is definitely the best advocate for mods.
I like this scenario though it was very easy to solve
don't forget to remove the Sewage drain pipes from the water to make it clean
have a nice day friend
We never know Biffa, maybe it was under BIRMINGHAM before. :)
I think i know whats happening with the land value. Its because some of the service buildings are from the default vanilla asset style (the thing you can toggle in the content manager under "styles") while the map itself uses the european theme for the textures. In a way this is an even harder-core way of playing the scenario that i didnt quite anticipate 😅
Lol, I do love a challenge! 😅🤣👍
Initially I was thinking to upgrade the main road to a dual carriageway and later noticed that doing this map in vanilla had to be a nightmare since the road layouts were clearly done with move-it mod, either for beautification or malicious reasons.
Seeing the pace Biffa is going is giving me the idea he'll be done in half the time needed :)
Even without just removing the roundabouts and keep the highway going with offramps.
oh man... thinking back to my time in Uganda and thinking about a double decker bus on those roads.... scary stuff .
To Biffa!
You 🫵🤩 are my favorite person!
I saw you comment on others videos.
You give huge support to the Skylines community!
I love it 💪
💪
omg watching biffa go nuts with that play thru HAHHAHAAH the mods... the mods made the game heaven and without it... youd go nuts.
Hey Biffa friendly reminder to have fun yourself no worries dude :) been watching your videos for years now. Thank You
I just cant anymore without TM:PE personally. You really are a Masochist with traffic fixes Biffa, right? 😛
That said I've downloaded the scenario and will be giving it a run later... With TM:PE tho. In fact it's more to mess with the town and map more than the scenario itself, heh.
Really enjoyed that one. Traffic fixes are really fun !
Biffa: tries to push a 4 lane highway under a space built for two lanes
Viewers: Lane mathematics, Biffa. Lane mathematics.
The map is beautifully built. Really looks like a real city.
But at 30:00, when Biffa finds out that the highway directions have been put in too close to accept connections is when I would have thrown the towel, closed the game and given the scenario the lowest possible rating. Not being able to upgrade part of the highway, in a scenario that is about upgrading the infrastructure, is a game breaking oversight.
The whole problem with this scenario is the round-a-bouts, they're a low traffic volume option, and are the cause of all of the problems. No one can get from one side or the city to the other or just to even cross over the highway without having to wait for everyone in front of them. There's a ton of unnecessary traffic being forced to use them. First thing I would have done was formalize the highway and grade separate it by elevating the whole thing. This has two effects. The first effect is traffic that is just running through never has to stop at a round-a-bout and wait. If you're going straight through, you just go straight through. Traffic flow greatly increases because no one stops. The second effect is you can add in neighborhood connections under the highway in dozens of locations. This allows for people going from one side to the other to not have to use the round-a-bouts or the highway at all, they just cross direct to the other side instead of going all the way around. Again traffic flow increases because less people are being forced to use the round-a-bouts. The round-a-bouts at this point should have very little traffic using them, therefor, you can repurpose them as the access points to the highway, and they should hold up quite well with the now low volume usage. After that's done, then I'd focus on the mass transit and other stuff, making heavy use of neighborhood circulator busses and having 5 or 6 of them drop cims off at a semi central park/commercial district with express busses or better forms of rapid transit shuttling people between each of these collection points.
31:00 TUNNEL!!!!! I was yelling it to you, you couldn't hear me though! 😂 😂
This makes me wanna buy the african dlc and try this scenario myself. It looks like a really nice city and a great challenge, not too unrealistic like some others. But seeing you struggle with vanilla also makes me wanna use some basic mods like TM:PE, MoveIt, Anarchy and such :D
This just gets funnier and funnier. And the way you just won't spot that the water is all sewage lol.
this seems like one of those that TM:PE at the start wouldn't help that much but once you set everything out and just need to iron out a few wrinkles then it would come in handy. plus just a beautiful map.
Your reliance on mods is shining through in this :p
Never have I more appreciated Hugo There. Looking forward to seeing the poo water go away and a nice metro system!
for your sanity, please do this video again but with mods on. Specially picker and the transit mod. hahahahahaha its hard to watch you realizing you have to do all the roads again hahahahaha
But awesome video as always.
I don't want to step on your toes or anything, but... with this huge highway arterial running through the city and it being the main problem to traffic flow at all it's rundabouts - why don't you convert all these roundabouts into interchanges? This clearly is a two-lane dual carriageway and _wants_ to be built up to interstate/Autobahn/motorway standard. I think you could solve 90% of your traffic problems by just ripping out your beloved roundabouts from the highway and putting in some small service interchanges.
In fact, I think this scenario was created by building a functioning city and then ripping out the services (you caught on to that as well) and replacing all interchanges on the main highway with roundabouts. I don't think any other change is needed...
32:55 That lower road is humping up, some landscaping to pare back the slopes and lower the terrain in the ditch would help the overpass fit more neatly.
oh my god i was looking at this in the workshop yesterday I love what teddy makes, can't wait to watch this
Hey, I got a 2 questions to experienced players, maybe someone can help me. First regarding quays and building on them - they always have this massive block of concrete underneath them that just looks bad and doesn't make any sense. Is there any reason why it doesn't blend with the quay I placed? Am I doing something wrong? Another question is regarding old industry specializations. Does it make any sense to put them since we now have new specialised industries? What I do sometime is I fill in gaps between buildings with old industry types so then the buildings are in the style of the area but they seem to be generating ridiculous number of trucks, feels like many more that new industries. Is this impression correct and does it make any sense to still use them?
Need pt.2 of this!
Where you're trying to join highway roads to the roundabout, you might be better to forget about having a curved entry/exit and just run the highway up to the roundabout at right angles - although traffic will move slower there, you won't have the node and change of road close to the roundabout that means traffic approaching holds back and you won't have to worry about one lane being used to turn traffic back towards the roundabout.
When the cars randomly seem to stop at some node, usually it means that there's either a height mismatch between the two segments, or a direction inversion due to offset overlaps (corner offsets usually). The ones at 24:30 are definitely the latter case. To fix it in this map, I would have deleted the last straight segment and put it back in, which would remove the inversion. (It's actually a bit of a coding oopsie: vehicles go through a node in a fixed order: segment 1 - offset marker 1 - spline to offset marker 2 - segment 2. Between two nodes that is: node - offset marker 1 - offset marker 2 - node. When the offsets overlap, the real order should be inversed, but the pathfinder doesn't. so even though it passes marker 2 first, it will still calculate a path going to marker 1 after having already passed it and having reached marker 2. This puts a 180° turn in the calculated path. Speeds are reduced exponentially with increasing turn angles, so a 180° turn causes a full stop of the vehicle. Rounding mechanisms make that the vehicles don't flip or actually turn around, but when the overlap is large enough, they will. I've seen vehicles drive a circle within a highway lane when I got a little too agressive with the corner offsets of a new interchange I had put in. The real solution would be a simple distance resolving test in the pathfinder, allowing for it to change the order of the points in the itinerary. Let's hope they do so in CS2)
34:50 In vanilla cities skylines, the roundabout really is the worst junction, while with TMPE it becomes the best junction
In my experience, using the 2 one direction road for on/off of a roundabout does not work in vanilla. Since it adds the turn lane of the off side, cars will wait at the node as if a car will use the turn. Getting ride of that and just using a single road gets rid of that decision point and will make traffic smoother going onto the roundabout.
I started this scenario myself, but with mods. And I found one big mistake you did: The description of the scenario in the steam workshop mentioned you have to enable "European/Vanilla" in the content manager before you start the city. So I did that and now I have more buildings available. It seems the game replaced some of the smaller european highschools with elementary schools because there isn't enough space for this other huge vanilla highschool. Maybe it deleted or replaced some other buildings as well.
Biffa is so enamoured with the roundabout that he misses the point of evading them altogether 🙂
Two on ramp, two off ramp and pull the highway out on the top of the roundabout.
Hello Biffa I have an idea. If you turn the houses off from historical they will level up and then you will gain population. As more people move in to them. With out having to build new roads and zone new houses.
Historical doesn't stop then leveling up, it just stops them changing their appearance when they do level up.
Ahh our "Biffa - preserver of roundabouts"! 🤗 You should plough the motorway right throws the town. 😜At least all the roundabouts where you build a bypass should go. Then you can implement some on- and off-ramps. Because they become trendy in the last month, grow some young linden left and right of the ramps.🌳
I would downgrade the highway to a regular road because the traffic flow is calculated by the road speed limit. That way, a regular road is slower so there is not a big gap from the max speed to the flow.
Lol i feel that pain in your voice looking over the remaining highway sections XD Traffic manager is such a good mod, when you don't have it....ouch
😁
I feel like you just need to build an overpass everytime the highway encounters a roundabout so you can have 1 continuous highway with each roundabout acting as a service interchange.
Most traffic looks like it wants to go straight on the highway anyway but instead each roundabout is acting like a speedbump.
I was wishing for him to do a roundabout interchange, like where the minor road goes to a roundabout with the on-ramps going to the highway.
Has there been a update to the scenario? Cause I can spot a lot of empty lots i know had buildings in it when i started my play through ( high schools etc, + you can see new buildings being built at the starting cinematic+ there shouldn't be any euro-buildings? )
This was a fun change of pace. Thank you for the great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am guessing to get traffic to 85%, all roundabouts should be decoupled from the main highway and changed into either raised highway or raised roundabout (or other junction) with on and off ramps.
And about all the missing services, how about checking sewer services before polluting the entire waterfront gets you a healthcare issue?
Great job on tackling the scenario in vanilla, i can hear your anxiety throughout the video :P
Makes it real enough that i might want to give it a try.
Playing this with TMPE, you’re a mighty warrior!!! 💪
This scenario is made so much better by the fact that this is a real place
Loved the video, i honestly didn't realize this was almost an hour long and was a bit sad when you called it off Lol. Awaiting part Deuce!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Without traffic mod, looks like the original separation of each direction into separate roads or highways has its purpose or advantage. Guarantee no waste of lanes at the roundabout connection junctions.
Looking forward to the next episode of this scenario! This is fun! 🙌🏻😃
i finally got C:S on my PC after playing on console for about a year and watching you try to fix the highway without mods is giving me crazy PTSD
Great episode. It's like fixing someone's city traffic problem on crack. Thanks for the entertainment.
😂😂😂
have you ever thought about making a contest of traffic fixing? like you could build a clogged up city and uplade it for people to fix it...the first one who solves it wins! it would be so cool...
What about trying to move sewage to one point out of the Island instead of poring it right into the rivers, could that increase land value? Awesome video btw! Keep it up Biffa👍
Goodness you forget how convenient some of the mods are until they are not there to use! You are doing a great job 🤩
Thank you! 😊
For the bypass you could have used 2 lane one way roads and had them going parallel to eachother instead of the 4 lane 2 way road. Also have the roundabouts raised and highway kind of separated would also help
30:55
You can always put the underpass highway in the ground. Just an option. Make it a tunnel.
I've watched Kibitz for so long his Cities OCD is burned into me and oh dear god those highways into roundabouts into highways made me want to cry.
I'll presume there is any new seniarios for the xbox one then 😢
As like a few comments, I'm surprised you didn't just take the highway over the roundabout.
Keep the traffic fixing videos coming biffa.
I think it was Overcharged Egg who uses gravel roads to lay out whenever building/rebuilding (because they can go more places than anything else without errors) then upgrade
Instead of all of the roundabouts interrupting the highway, make the highway continuous with overpasses and have the ramps go into the roundabouts. Since money is not an issue, add a unique building or two. I believe that’ll increase land value and population.
I'm just so confused when I see you making those weird right lane overpasses, I'm just used to the ring road where I live where the overpass is over the roundabout, and then on the sides you find the slip lanes to the roundabout
some of the Bus stops are too close to the roundabouts and stop the traffic, upgrade the roads into the roundabouts up to the bus stops so that traffic can pass the standing buses. 😉
Probably wont happen but id love to see how this ends then see you do it again but this time with tmp move it and road anarchy and see how massive the change is with 3 mods and how much faster you can do it
Just took my traffic from 46% and massive backlog to over 80%.. Thanks for your advice!
Fantastic!
Try to build some kind of underground toll beside the main road with an exit and entrance right before each roundabout. So anyone that wants to straight to another city can bypass those roundabouts
Haha, Vanilla Cities Skylines really is something else isn't it ?
*cries in Epic version*
Hey pal, I've got some serious issues with traffic in my city but can't work out how to sort it on Ps4 any chance you could help ?
Biffa spending so long on one junction that doesn't really matter, when the single bus stop at the top at 35:34 is causing it to back up onto the rooundabout... It's infuriating
I think this would have been much easier using actual service interchanges allowing straight travel without messing with vanilla roundabouts. And adding travel from one side of the central highway to the other without having to cross one of those roundabout/service interchanges would be a huge benefit as well.
No way, Biffa is using underground. WOW :)
I would have loved to see this using traffic manager and all of your good roads, but with NO public transport. Your most fun videos are when you fix traffic using better roads.
Interesting scenario… I will try it too Biffa, but to do exactly the same with you, I think it is difficult to have the same results😂
Curious why you "make a bypass" when the bulk traffic is just going straight. I think that's a bit backward. The roundabout just needs to go under the main highway (or just make a new exit interchange). Even a diamond interchange would work in many of these cases.
Correct me if I’m wrong but what this tells us is that the base game (without mods like tmpe) is unplayable?
Keep watching the series, you're wrong 😉
I'm still recovering from the "easiest" scenario. Tornado Country.
I would LOVE to see Biffa beat all the scenarios.
I've done them all on my channel 👍
Given that most of the traffic at the roundabouts was going straight on could the roundabouts have been removed and replaced with simple highway junctions?
Space is sooo limited here so probabvly not.
I was wondering why you didn't use the pre-built Highway flyover/roundabouts rather build them all from scratch? They also leave the Highway free flowing I would have thought but I only tend to watch and not play.
You should 've used tmpe ONLY to turn despawning off, and it would be even a greater challenge
And with the Realtime mod installed with every option in it set to "insanely evil"
Was there a part 2 posted? I cant find it anywhere
Never mind, found it! If anyone else is lookin for it, its titled "metro spaghetti"
