I like to use the checkerboard technique on residential zones in my regular cities to create one-tile lots for a Chicago-esque dense single-family dwellings. If you wait for the one tile lot to develop, then you can put another one-tile residential zone next to it, and they won't join up.
This is the same pattern I employ to force 2x2, 3x3, or 4x4 developments. It takes a lot longer for the area to develop, but you get the desired diversity in the structures being built.
if you use mods, you could also create themes with only the 1x1 buildings & zone en masse. adds a safeguard against 2 adjacent buildings being destroyed and rebuilding as one!
Astounding angelfish, Ambiguous Amphibian(man)! An awfully accomplished achievement abiding alongside almost adequate and aesthetically appealing allotments. This video appeared in my recommended. I’ve never even heard of this game before, but with this video as my first impression, it seems like the most complicated thing ever. I looked up more info about it, and found a beginner’s guide that’s 27 parts, each around an hour long. How is that only for beginners!? Man, if this is how cities are managed in a video game, then I can’t fathom how hard it must be in real life. Now that I’m thinking about it, I realize I don’t know much about how the real world works; I only know what I’ve seen in movies. I’d make a terrible mayor or president. It’s amazing that they’re able to take care of millions of people, when I can barely take care of myself.
I was nervous about the new editor but it seems they are totally killing it. Loved the style of this video- been watching a while and I can say confidently this is a change for the better. Cheers

> Urban sprawl makes you go bankrupt > Only successful build ever use mixed-use zoning (at least approximated it) You are absolutely right, and you should look at Strongtowns and Not Just Bikes or City Beautiful or Citynerd or ...
actually, Bangkok's city layout is more or less like this. a bunch of long parallel roads for max land utilisation. unfortunately the thai government allows private developers to decide on road layouts with absolutely no requirements, so the city ended up with massive condominiums lining up tiny 2-lane 2-way roads with dead ends. needless to say, it causes massive traffic jams even in the residential areas
By coincidence, I recently started doing something like this. I'm going for 100%'ing the game, there's yet another scenario that has a 250,000+ pop requirement for victory for no reason related to the scenario's theme of tsunami (also compares to Amb's island start video because that's what you do here, just with a few more islands, but you have to start with 1 and wall it off like Age of Empires against the initial tsunami assault), so yeah, givin' it a shot. Probably not gonna watch this yet but I'll check it some time later to compare. I've done some initial research in some previous 250k scenarios, I'm sure people who scrub the wiki know all of this, but different zones have different variable population based on the size of the lot. There's a lot of multiples and math and not a TON of difference overall (with Industry literally being the same 2-workers-per-1-tile no matter what size), but basically, 1-tile High Residential actually benefits in comparison to any other size, with a potential max of 2 families, where for instance a 4x4 has a maximum of 30. That's just 2 more families of value, and in theory you need more road to account for 1-tile lots so they should be just bad, but I'm trying some funky thin dirt road layouts to try and pack as many in as possible. A cul-de-sac system like many use in SimCity 4 might be the best here, I'm not going for that but I'd recommend that for anyone curious to try it out, helps you shrink block size without actually shrinking block size. Another factor I've been considering is what I like to call 'door count', this is especially important for the aforementioned Industry as well as Commercial to a lesser extent, smaller buildings with a higher door count means trucks will make smaller deliveries and thus need to make more stops to empty their load. This is very bad. I'm not 'purely' in the challenge so I'm just building 4x4 Industry. I've also got rather early issues of workplaces finding workers, but that's possibly because I'm still just bad at this game. Extra note as it's something that a less-than-great PC user like me is concerned about, this has some chance of tanking performance due to so many more routes to calculate. Skylines already has trouble for me at 6 or more City tiles unlocked (which you basically need for 250k pop), so I expect this to be hell, hope Amb and his PC fared better, and due warning to anyone else trying a build like this. I should probably just build a straightforward city and beat this dang scenario, but I get too bored, I gotta gimmick at least a little.

Missed opportunity sending a tidal wave through the finely crafted rows of Nipplopolis. Imagine several thousand metric tons of water combing through the city, washing it out in perfection.
So, you can do the checkerboard thing with empty space, and then once everything is built, you can fill in the empty space of the checkerboards and at least residences don't merge, so you can have 2-wide spaces between roads. this gets you a higher population density per tile, because a 1 tile house holds about half as many people as a 4x4 tile house, which means 8x the population density, which means more people being taxed, which means you can have lower taxes for them and still make money, which keeps them happy. also, on a grid system of sorts, you can vastly improve traffic by using 1-way streets in selective places.
