Seen them play this a couple of times live. Once with LG Petrov doing the growls and once where Barney Greenway did it. Volbeat frontman use to play in a Death Metal band.

the song did make it on to an album, the biggest change is that Barney Greenaway (lead vocalist of Napalm Death) does the verse vocals.

Barney Greenway from Napalm Death sings the studio recording, this Demo recording is sung by Michael Poulsen himself. LG Petrov (RIP) from Entombed sung this song live with Volbeat.

there are a few versions of this tune, they have a live version with Barney Greenway from napalm death singing the gritty parts. that version is pretty amazing

Interesting point about the verses: I had just thought they were still in 4, but I guess it's a case where it can be counted either way. You've mentioned the melodic undertones (or lack thereof) for the growl style a number of times, but I'm not good at picking up on it. 🙂 So I went back and forth on whether I thought Michael managed that in this song, and I'm glad to hear he did at least to some degree. And I figured the clean vocals would balance that out anyway.
The two versions of the song definitely have some differences, and I knew I had to go with just one for the reaction. I think the album version has a slightly different sound in the guitar and drums (or maybe just the mix), but my decision really hinged on three things.
    1. Vocals: The album version has guest vocals from Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, and I think his sound is a little over the top, like he overpowers the other instruments and the (slightly changed) lyrics are even less discernible. I think Michael doing the harsh vocals himself blends into the song much more. This is the thing that put me off the song for years until I heard the demo.
    2. Bass: During the breakdown, the bass is way more prominent in this version, and I have no idea why they changed that for the final product.
    3. Drums: Coming out of the last chorus, at least where the vocals end (7:33), there's an extra snare hit, which I think is a really nice accent for that point in the song. In the album version, that's used within every chorus, so to me it has less impact.
