Volbeat is so good!
I've only been listening to Volbeat for 4 yrs, but I am all in; they're my favourite band now. They made me love music again (no exagerration). Some people hate on them a bit much (the complaint being their 2016 and 2019 albums not being heavy). Although I definitely preferred when they went down the heavier side of things for Servant of the Mind, I love their whole catalogue of music: They go anywhere from metal/hard rock, to old school Elvis Presley rock n' roll, to Rockabilly, to real melodic radio-friendly stuff. They have it all IMO 👍
This is actually better than the original, and that is rare, especially for Metallica.

Still Counting is a good song to start with when it comes to Volbeat.
Their entire catalog is worth listening to.
Like most people I have my personal favorites such as:
“Becoming”.
“7 Shots” (Live from Telia Parken 2017).
“Light a way”.
When lead singer Michael Poulsen’s dad died the song “Light a way” was played at his funeral.
“Soulweeper”.
“Mary Ann’s Place”.
“Seal the Deal”
“Shotgun Blues”.
To name a few.
Another Metallica cover song worth listening to is “Enter Sandman” (though David probably won’t be listening to that one 😉 They played it live from Telia Parken 2017 with Lars Ulrich on drums. He dropped by their concert because Metallica were giving a concert at that same place the weekend after Volbeat.

100% with you on that score, DH. I was headbanging along with you and the song the entire time. Funny thing, I was talking with friends on voice chat shortly after 3am, and my good friend was saying how they had seen Ghost last year or so, and were pleasantly surprised to see the opener, TwinTemple (a 50's doo-wop Satanist duo) but they knew about them and had heard them before, but they'd never heard about Volbeat before and Volbeat was a HUGE surprise and a HUGE treat as the middle band. I said "Huh, how coincidental! Volbeat's cover of Don't Tread On Me is today's early vid on DH's channel!" and I think you may have a few new viewers. :)

I completely agree with the assessment, a grandiose cover. Honestly, I was waiting for something amazing from Volbeat, and these guys fully met the expectations. Ever since I first heard this band on this channel, these guys have been constantly filling my days with high-quality music with fantastic guitar sounds. I also recommend listening to their song Doc Holiday, guys, this is the best thing I've listened to this year, it's a bomb.🌋

Greetings from florida!… this cover is not only awesome, the band is also awesome. They were the openers for Metallica too 2018 they played along with avenged 7 fold!. As a Metallica fan I don’t think there’s nothing to be offended for, I feel the same way with many covers and originals. All Metallica covers at the garage I love them more than the originals ( including the Motörhead and queen) also GNR covers to knocking of heavens doors and live and let die!. Awesome reaction dave!. Forgot to mention: Thanks for pointing out the harmonies in the chorus! I hadn't really acknowledged them while listening previously.
It's weird. It's like Metallica wrote a great rock song but they recorded it like a metal track. Volbeat doubled down and recorded a killer rock jam.
To me it's very reminiscent to how Metallica would have written it now

i am a Volbeat fan, as well as Metallica fan already, both are bands i listen to regulary, and imo Volbeat is a super metal band, with very good variation, going from very metal, to Elvis/Johnny cash vibes.. well its still metal, on latest album, they even got some Jerry lee lewis vibes..lol
Now Metallica is also a BIG influence on Volbeat, and they did warm ups for them several times..
I love how they nailed the Kirk solo vibe...start off blastin, slow it down for a little blues section, then melt your face off :D
Wow, that score surprised me. 😁It did cross my mind as a possibility during the reaction, but I didn't really entertain the thought. I also wasn't sure how you felt about the original, but figured at least it hasn't been worn out (like Enter Sandman).
I love the added dynamism in this version: the melodies, the partial layouts going into the chorus, and the somewhat faster tempo that I think helps to set up the feel change. The chorus progression is a cool observation, and thank you for the breakdown of that. I'll have to go back and listen more closely for it in the original.
This song was like a gift to me, bc volbeat is my favorite band and Don't tread on me is my fav metallica's song

I can't imagine a Metallica fan that doesn't like this track, it's such a good cover.
I love the fact that they took this song and made it their own. Metallica kinda has a predictable sound and feel. I've always thought they should all break up (hiatus) and form other bands just to get away from what they write. Then get back together with a new fresh feel to their music writing. Sometimes getting away from what you know gives you a chance to create without the influence of what you know (40 yrs of that)

No it wasn't that one, I've heard that one and it was actually really good.
This reminds me of the band orbit culture a band that covered another Metallica song called Hardwired and it blew my mind because it sounded better than the Metallica's version.

Now I have (slightly belatedly) listened / seen your reaction to "Don't Tred On Me" 8 - 10 times - I hadn't heard the Metallica original before I heard the Volbeat version here. And I did almost the same thing as you when the chorus started - as in What? - so good!
You mentioned that you love covers when they are made personal to the band performing the track - Depeche Mode did the track Policy Of Truth in 1991, Terry Hoax did a cover of this in 1992 and I think it's better than the original.
