I'm not an Amazon spokesperson and do not speak for the company. Can't they just WFH instead though? The Amazon population in Seattle is vast, but a good amount of team members don't need to meet in person to innovate in their roles. Engineers don't need to look over each other's shoulders to look at a screen when there's a screen share functionality in almost every comms app. Many workers have bosses and coworkers in other states/countries, so they'll have to go to work only to "collaborate" with their team via video call anyway! This whole thing has a cloak-and-dagger feel and it's sickening. Very "Strive to be Earth’s Best Employer" of Amazon to destroy work-life balance for folks essentially just for the hell of it. Not to mention this action will make an already crowded area more crowded and punish loyal workers by making them spend hours in traffic and make them pay for parking. Ridiculous.
As an Amazonian (that’s what they call us) I can tell you the mood is quite toxic in the building. My heart goes out to my colleagues with children or who are caregivers. Does Amazon have the right to call us back in? Yes. Is it best for the culture? No.
Everyone looking forward to the gridlock and highway traffic madness again. We have all seen the reports of Amazon's just-walk-out *technology* and Zoox self-driving *technology* actually being handled by masses of low-cost workers over in India. That 5 day return to office actually means they want 20 percent of the US corporate workers to LEAVE without having to do another round of Layoffs and severance payouts, to be replaced by much cheaper labor in India offices. Good for the 'efficiency' report to shareholders but bad for US workers. Brought to you by the company famous for pey-in-bottles and crying-at-desks. ;-)
All execs can do is spout buzzwords like culture and talk about anecdotal evidence because the data does not supoort their control freak natures. Seems a bit premature for you to decalre remote work over. Over 70% of tech companies still plan to support the model and close half of the CEOs who said last year that they were thinking of full RTO have backed off on that (was over 60% and now down to 34%). The cheese has moved and these old execs need to hunt it elsewhere or risk losing talent. Would be nice if you did a little thoughtful analysis along with regurgitating corperate talking points.
easy.....the expense of owning the buildings is not worth the cost of maintenance and upkeep if employees are not inside to use it, it becomes an unnecessary expense. Better to have employees commute then pay taxes on a building not used.
of course they want u back in office, what the fuck is amazon going to do with their office build thats empty right now. not to mentioned local government also want office worker return to office district as they will help propping up local economy via lunch/after work spending at restaurant.
Ty for news fellas. That fact that I have always been willing to go on-site. Has made me more valuable in my industry. I’m okay with people wanting to stay remote cause it just make people like that much more valuable to a company. Negotiate accordingly…
Of course they pay more, you're spending money on commute, lunch, clothes etc. Never mind the opportunity cost of those commute hours and general happiness. If they don't pay you more you're losing money.
Amazon is just looking to do a sneaky workforce reduction with the RTO, I wouldn’t take it too seriously

Amazon 5 days excuse is bogus. Its about many things. Not teams better working together
I think someone heard you talking about buying MJs house and turning it into an AirBnB and scooped it up!!
Guys, the Murdoch situation IS already a tv show: Succession on Max is almost a blueprint copy of the media dynasty drama unfolding in real life.

Talent is expendable and why they have AI to replace talent anyways. Checkmate

They’re going to fire all those that don’t want to return back to the office.
How about not reading the screen?
