Kenny, these videos are amazing. Just went to your web site where they're all grouped according to topic -- what a godsend! And your narration style is just so helpful. I know some comments in other videos tease you a bit for your slow diction, but I find it to be just the right pace. It's slow and soothing, and it gives me time to absorb both what you're saying and what I'm seeing on the screen. I wish you great success with your channel and your product offerings! I'm sure I'll be buying one soon.

Why use this template set up?
I set mine up like that and it worked as described.
One thing I noticed, each drum on its own track but the track panel controls, volume, pan, etc are not in operation. Raise the snare volume up or down does nothing. I realize volume etc can be controlled in the AD2 drum interface.
I guess the only use for this template set up is to be able to record each instrument on its own track.
Kinda odd, first you split drums apart then you bring then back together.

I do believe Reaper has a “explode” function that separates notes by pitch to separate tracks! Your way, if you set it up as a preset is faster!

Rather than multiply you processor workload, set up a channel with the VST/FX you require and SEND the track(s) to it. Therefore you can use the same channel to process as many instruments you require. As shown in this example the Master FX is doing the job for the whole kit.

Well, this is separating MIDI notes, not each part of a drum VSt.
What I would do is record your performance on one track with one instance of the drum plugin, explode the midi performance by note to separate tracks, delete the original track to which you have the plugin put into, add the plugin to each track you separated out from the original track, and lastly freaze the tracks so they become audio tracks.

im sorry Im confused what is the point of doing this? it seems way harder to edit an make midi drum tracks if their all spread out like that. I came here thinking this would show me how to put the drum sounds on their own tracks for compression eq and fx.

    • @The-Bloke
      @The-Bloke 4 года назад

In the intro Kenny says it might make it easier to edit the individual parts, eg if you want to change the velocity for one drum at a time. I must admit I can't see a huge benefit myself either, but then again I've never edited a drum part! To do what you want, ie different plugins for each individual drum, I can think of a couple of ways. Firstly, your drum plugin might support multiple output channels. EZDrummer, the one Kenny shows here, does. It has an in-built mixer. It defaults to outputting just stereo, but in the plugin you can change that to multichannel, and then you get up to 16 separate stereo pairs; 32 channels of audio in total. You can then add more channels to the Reaper track with the drum plugin on, and use the plugin pins to have EZDrummer send audio to those extra tracks. You can then put individual EQs on each channel, or pairs of channels using their plugin pins to have them listen to the appropriate input channels; eg you could add six copies of ReaEQ to a single drum plugin track, then set the first EQ to listen on channels 1+2, the second on 3+4, then 5+6, 6+7, etc. Each would be EQing a different drum/set of drums. However it'd probably be easier to manage if instead you created one track for the drum plugin and then separates track for each of the stereo audio oputs, then use add multiple sends from the drum plugin track to each of those separate audio channels. Ie if the drum plugin is on track 1, add a send from track 1 to track 2, sending channels 1+2, then another from track 1 to 2 sending channels 3+4, then 5+6 to track 4, and so on. Then tracks 2, 3, 4, etc could each have their own FX chain, which would be affecting the audio of only one one set of drums. One track for the Kick, one for Snare, one for the Toms, one for Hi-Hats, etc. That would also give you one fader and pan pot per set of drums.
EZDrummer provides stereo channel pairs for: Kick, Snare, Hi-Hat, Toms, Overheads, Ambient stereo, Ambient mono, One Shot, Shaker, Tambourine, and Percussion ambient. That's probably all anyone would need, however it's not quite one per drum. For example there are four toms, all of which will come out the stereo pair marked "Toms", and would need to share a single FX chain.
The second method could provide literally one track per individual drum, and would also work for drum FXs that don't provide multi-channel output: first split the MIDI input parts like Kenny shows here, and then simply put a separate instance of the drum FX plugin on each individual track. You can then add EQ and other plugins after the drum FX on each individual track. You could then have, say, 16 or so tracks, each one for an individual drum, each having an instance of the drum plugin, and each with its own separate FX chain. Of course that may well be overkill, and the disadvantage of this method - besides requiring more time to setup, at least the first time - is that you'll end up running far more copies of each plugin, at the cost of CPU resources.

Hi Kenny. I'm trying to do the same thing with Session Drummer 3. How can I filter four non-correlative notes on my Hats MIDI track? I have already checked that I add four JS note filter, when I filter note 22 to 22, in the following note filter the 42, and the following the 44 and the next 46, will only filter the 22. Thus, it seems that you can not use more than one scrip of Note Filter per string FX. Thank you for exposing things so clearly. Greetings.

Or can you only see the output on the parent track? Also, can you control each individual tracks volume from the individual sliders in Reaper or do you have to do that from the midi editor? I understand that the overall volume will be controlled from the parent track. Thanks again! This is a big help.

I have the same request regarding volume control in the mixer. I guess I could do volume control in the "parent" track containing all the samples, but if the fader could do it, that would be nice. I have a Novation Impulse 49 with pads programmed for the midi inputs. So alternatively, I'll try to "learn" the volume controls in the ReaSamplomatic for each fader. Another fantastic video Kenny. This has kept me busy and experimenting for weeks now :)

Hi Kenny, thank you so much for these videos, they're brilliant. With this one though I'm using superior drummer and everything seems to go to plan until I open the midi examiner plugin, the drums are not triggering anything in that plugin when I click on them. The sounds are still coming through track 1 though... is there anything I should be setting up differently before starting this tutorial? Cheers!

I am having a similar problem: after I create the "kick" track and send it to the first track, there is still no signal on the "kick" track.

    • @REAPERMania

You have to click on your MIDI keyboard or MIDI drums. Clicking in the plugin won't send MIDI to the MIDI Examiner.

Is there a way to trigger two notes from 1 hit? In my drum software I have the snare sound and a trigger sound (I load anoter snare sound with more bass in it) and together sounds killer but cannot trigger both at the same time since they are in different keys (D1 and D1#), is there a MIDI FX (or chain) that allows me to trigger both notes?. Thanks in advance.

HOW to make ONE_ONLY midi track with drums in Arrangement View AND A LOT OF different channels with drums in Mixer.
It`s not comfortable - so many track is Arrangement View ib vertical space.
Yes we can make a midi_sends from track with several samplomatics to other tracks named "snare", "kick", "hat", but we will have a several tracks in arrange_list too. It`s not comfortable.

Kenny, thanks for this video. It was a much different way to separate out the individual midi instruments than the automatic way MT Power Drums does for you. I did this for every one of my drum types, but then I couldn't figure out how to pan them left or right using the pan controls in the tracks for each instrument. Do you have any advice on where to go to fade one of these drums left or right? Is there no way to do that in Reaper's track interface with your setup?

@@timothygoodman942 I wish I could tell you but I have come so far since this comment, losing a PC to hardware failure and becoming much more experienced with Reaper, that I can't recall. It's been a while since I played with midi, though. Thank you for asking.

hi Kenny! Thanks again for all your well made videos. I totally dig it its very helpful for me.
Following this video, I am wondering if it is possible to have a setup where the individual MIDI tracks are also receiving a seperate output from the INSTRUMENT?
For example: I would like to load only one DRUM instrument that has multiple outputs. I also want seperate MIDI tracks to contain the information of the beat I am making. Finally I would like to have seperate audio outputs to mix in Reaper that are also coming back on the MIDI tracks, Do you know if this is possible ? I have tried doing my own setup and it didnt work as expected.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

This video is amazing dude, but any idea what to do when your channels overlap? Eg: I have a Roland TD-6V kit, and the floor tom uses 41/43, but 42 is one of the hi-hat notes. What do you do each pad's channel range overlaps? I tried having multiple MIDI filters, but that doesn't work (which makes sense now I think about it!)

Hi James, I am facing the same issue and am wondering if you have found a solution for it. Is there any way to add e.g. 41 and 43 as comma separated notes to a track instead of a range?

    Hi Reaper.
Followed this excellent tutorial, but can't get the "MIDI Note Filter" or "MIDI Examiner" to work. They load ok, but don't show what note is being played on the MT Power Drumkit plugi, or block whatever note you tell it to.
    Any ideas?

Hi Kenny - watching this and im still having trouble recording the midi output from one track to another. I have pre-recorded midi and an arpeggiator plugin on one track and i want the arpeggiated output recorded somehow - as midi. Of course i can render audio but i want the arpeggio recorded as notes.
I know i can record in real time by playing notes on keyboard and having the arpeggiator as input FX....but... i want some pre-recorded midi files to trigger the arpeggiator and record the result as midi.

This is a very intuitive video so thanks very much Keny. I have a question for you. Can we achieve the same result with another multi vsti plugin, i.e like FL Studio Multi Vsti or even with Ableton Live? I would appreciate it if you can do a video on either platform to show the same effect. Many thanks.

cou jean Agree, this is a drawback. The workaround is to filter them on separate tracks then route or group them to one track. It's a shame that they didn't implement such an obvious requirement as the ability to select non-sequential note combinations.

This is the same problem I ran into, and I agree that there should be a way to customize the notes so that they can be filtered non-sequentially.

Your videos are some of the best! Can this be done with an electronic kit? I did go through what this video instructs and I never could get the MIDI examiner to show me the MIDI drum note being played. I'm sure the answer has something to do with how Reaper is set up in my use but I haven't found it yet. Any ideas where I should look?
