Videos like these make me want to resurrect my '86 460ci F250 4x4...gas was over $4 a gallon when the water pump went out, so it was either spend the money and time to fix a truck that got like 8 mpg and leaked oil like crazy from seemingly everywhere, especially the rear main seal, or get something a little more economical. I was putting a quart in on every fillup, which is really saying something since I was filling it up all the time. I do miss that power and the sound of the true dual exhaust with 3" pipe and 24" glasspacks...It rumbled the ground enough to set off car alarms as I drove by them, lol. That engine is a monster, and sounds like one. I've also got to admit it was kind of fun to see the expression on the faces of young guys working at the parts store, when they asked engine size and I told them 7.5l 460...some of them get wide eyed and say something like, "Whoa, really?!" lol, always cracked me up.

SRT Viper 51 well the reliability comes with a cost. you need parts, you're gonna pay. the trucks cost more up front, the fuel costs more, everything about them is more expensive to own. And I'm not hauling a bulldozer 1200 miles a couple times a week, I don't need that kind of torque. +runeshark22 diesel cost less than gas. If you're not towing, you don't need diesel. Stick with a gasser since you don't tow. But don't compare the two. Nobody believes gasses are more reliable. They hit higher Temps. The also guzzle up fuel in order to match what a diesel can produce. The drop in MPGs on a diesel while towing isn't nearly as much as a gasser would drop.

Me and my dad got a project 460 for cheap cheap. Full crew can dually with the centurion package. The guy bought it from an old man and didn’t have time to fix it. It has no spark and we ended up pulling the distributor and she started right up. She needs a little more work, there’s still leaks here and there but over all for a truck that had been sitting under a pine tree for three years it’s in very good condition. Even in New York it has no rust.
When it comes to the early 7.3s and 460s it really just depends on which one you like more. Getting bad MPG in the 460 but not having to worry about costly maintenance or getting better MPG in the 7.3 and paying for the maintenance. personally I'm a diesel guy because I own a transporting business and I like the MPG and reliability. BUT for a straight up round town work/play truck. I'd go 460. Easier to work on/maintain. Cheaper too. And if you blow up a 460 just go to a junkyard haha you aint finding no good 7.3s at a junkyard!
Hey man I get it, it's fun to see who's got the best pulling rig. That is so abusive on the whole driveline though, it seems like the winner of that pull was the camera man! Wanna see who has a better towing rig, put your gooseneck on and pull some ag equipment
I've owned both and now have two 7.3's. This was a lot of fun and certainly was more on traction than pulling power, but you put 25,000 lbs behind both and I'll take the 7.3 every time. I use to do these with my old 390 and pulled any Chevy until they hollowed stop. lol
My motorhome a 1990 Ford Fleetwood Flair 30 foot. The best RV I have ever owner. The 460 motor fires up like a charm every time even when I’m about ready to run out of gas. Very quiet. Unlike his mine is fuel injected so from inside the RV you can’t really hear it running. They have made a lot of improvement on the 460 over the last several years. It’s a workhorse. You wouldn’t believe the shear weight these motors can pull without even a single complaint. No can’t complain. Only thing that hasn’t changed??? Average gas mileage is about 7.5 miles per gallon. It costs about a $1 every time I fire it up. They can use a lot of oil, so you really have to keep your eyes on it. Otherwise this motor will run with the wind on anything you give it, and keeps on ticking. I love my Ford 460 motor.
I agree on the 460. The torque it has is unbelievable. The best motors that ford has made are the 460 and the 4.9 straight six. The 4.6 coming in at third.
94 460 fuel injection best engine Ford ever made, well over 300000 on mine and still goin'. Can still do looooong burn outs on it too. Replaced oil pump not too long ago, spun it and #6 cylinder showed some minor scoring, guess the wiper has gone bad. All others can still see original honing. No noticeable wear on bearings. Thrust bearing doesn't seem to have any play either!
jrryc1 your 93-97 f150 is fucking UGLY. its underpowered , it aint even a real ford truck . Go 10 to 15 years older for the coolest bodystyle f150 ever made ..... and get yourself a built curberatored 351 Windsor....? It'll put to shame your shit bucket 460. Btw - hasn't been a real 460 made since the 70s.
This would be more interesting if both trucks had the same tires, the same weight in back and the same driver (I know that can't happen, but it's likely the biggest factor.), then it would be closer to showing which engine is better at pulling. It looks to me like the diesel has more street oriented tires, and the 460 powered truck had more aggressive tires, that's why it looked like something was going to snap on the 460 powered truck, it was getting more traction.
Although the 460 is a better engine stock. It also sounds like a monster which is a plus. Not shutting down the powerstroke though, you get some turbos and do a little tuning those things will pull like a Mother F*****
I just bought a 1988 f350 gas 460 for 1,300. All it needed was 2 injectors, front rotors brakes and exhaust manifold gaskets. My god that thing is a beast, But boy is it a PIG 8 to 11 mpg
460 wins, damn the diesel just uses less revs so it’s ultimately better for towing long distance fuel wise, but for shear dragging power 460 all day long
am i the only one who was waiting for the strap to break? that truck would have went flying into the garage or the gas truck could have shot out into the street when a car was passing by. cool video
I want both to pull and work out of to know for my usage. Have had a 7.3 these past 13 years but now that I drive 300 miles a day I’d like to blow up a 460 since it’s cheaper even though fuel monthly cost more I’m still getting fuel payed for
the higher hitch lifts the other truck rear wheels (less traction) these pull offs don't prove much. Hook to a sled or something heavy and see which pulls better.
Before they even start my money is on the 460. Knew it. 460s pull like a mule. Aftermarket aluminum heads a longer duration cam and a edelbrock air gap intake and 750 cfm carb really wakes them up
the only thing this proves is one guys truck has better tires than the other. To do the test right you would need to put an identical load in the back of each truck so the rear ends were both weighted down the same, then you would have to have the same tires on both trucks, lastly both trucks would have to have the same drive line whether it be two wheel drive or four wheel drive, both trucks would have to be on the same consistent surface. Then and only then can you accurately tell which would win in a tug of war.
7.5 motor may go out before the 7.3 but you get to rebuild it internally and stroke it out to 8.1. i got a 7.5 but would love a 7.3 also. Cant wait till the motor goes
GUTZ-OF- GODZ Traction... If one is spinning there's no grip being caught by the 7.3 therefore tractions plays a huge roll. If it was the other way around the 460 would've lost. Its 90% traction.
Rare Vibezzz I never said it didn't i said IF both trucks had traction I was saying both trucks had traction and u r right yes traction does play a high roll in this and the 460 has more traction cuz a 460 is a towing engine
what's the wheel base of your 99, and what type of tires? traction is the major limiting factor in a tow competition like that (and who breaks parts first)
back to back pull offs don't mean anything I watched a 2wd 1/2 Ton v 6 beat a 4wd 1/2 ton v8 simply for the fact the 2wd didn't have enough power to break the tires lose as soon as the other truck did the 2wd dragged him
Before watching I thought the diesel would win but it looks like to me they are evenly matched with maybe the 460 winning a little bit. But as you said it has to do with traction, maybe one's tires are slicker than the other. Nice video.
I should hope so . Its a giant gasoline motor . If it doesn't then its a complete failure of design . That being said , do you know the stock horsepower and torque specs for those two motors ?
Both were in 2wd the whole time the 7.3 had a problem with one of the front hubs and the 460 had the ttb front suspension and had a sheared pin in the diff so neither had reliable 4x4 so they agreed to keep it in 2
We’re these both stick of automatic? Both of these trucks are great. I’d take a good 460 over the new trucks, but I drive a 93 idi & she’s been doing well as of now. I get about 16-20mpg city & highway. Highway is like 20mpg, city is like 15-17 ish. Got a ZF5 2wd & 3.55 gears. Had a 95 7.3 w 4.10s & threw a 3.55 axle in it before I got my 93 before I started to have issues w head gaskets & injectors. Bet that 460 gets 5mpg or for them gassers it’s smiles per gallon of fuel.
chris medders Chevy is the absolute worst been working on all of the big 3 for 40 years I’ve seen plenty of each but GM is the worst of the 3 no contest
Like them both there are pickups to this day will impress alot of people in there day Chevy or dodge couldnt touch them in my opinion they still cant youll be surprised what they can do even on a bad day
I'll give you Chevy. Detroit diesels were built solely for fuel economy. I owned on and it pulled okay but I certainly get better mileage than a Ford Or Dodge diesel. Now the Cummins I doubt would fall short to an international stock. As far as gas engines the 460 has a name for a reason.
Chris Martin They are essentially the same truck. Cabs, frames, axles, springs, all the same. Box and front clips just shaped a little different. The 460 has a 2 liter advantage in displacement and therefore is probably slightly heavier. 460's get terrible mileage but make gobs of power.
jay lesmeister well when it comes to big blocks, you're not looking for fuel economy, you're looking for power. my old 351w put out about 480hp and got about 10mpg. granted it was a small block, the 3 speed auto and the 4brl carb didnt help with the gas mileage.
I had an 87/88 f350 with the 460 and 5 spd w od and that thing would go up a mountain in first gear and although it had a big grain body dump it would float down the highway at a 100 mph with ease like a caddy or town car and it felt like you were only going 55 it was so smooth and it had to stop at every gas station you saw, I was worried cuz when I bought it the owner was totally honest that it had 350k on the odometer, I beat the hell outta that truck for about 4 or 5 years using it to haul huge, heavy loads of scrap i beams and never had a minute of trouble from it, sold it it to another contractor that also beat the hell out of it for the next cpl yrs and after not seeing it around town for a cpl months I bumped into the guy and asked if it finally died and he said he'll no, that thing was a beast and ran like a top but some moron that worked for him somehow caught the engine compartment on fire trying to dump gas into the intake after letting it run outta gas, apparently he didn't follow the rule of stopping at every gas station it saw, I learned quick that pulling in the gas station and telling the attendant, ya give me 20 bucks worth of the cheap stuff was literally a complete waste of time, I owned it when Katrina knocked out the gas plants down south and gas was over 4 bucks a gallon, 20 bucks would literally get you to the next gas station if you were lucky and going downhill with a strong wind behind ya, lol. One of the best, toughest trucks I ever owned and belive me I was not kind to it ever a day in its life and I think I paid 3 grand for it and when I sold it I got 2500 for it cash after 4 or 5 yrs of faithful, trouble free daily duty, I was sad when I heard it burned up enuff that he junked it, it would probably still be running today cuz the guy that sold it to me gave me a xerox copy of a magazine article of a guy down south with the identical truck with a million miles on the original block, granted it was owned by a Ford mechanic but it made me feel good enuff to part with my 3 grand for a vehicle with over a quarter million miles on it which I would never do otherwise but it seems those cheap beaters are always the best buys that never let u down, no reason to use first gear, not even fully loaded and starting off on a steep hill, 2nd gear was strong as you would ever need, first gear was just overkill
idk we don't have a scale all i know is the truck is a twin to the diesel on and the diesel one weighs more by alot and the inter net is useless to find that out
Ya the internet is useless but we couldn't find the exact weight for a 7.3 powerstroke my uncle said is approximately 920lbs and right on the dot the 460 weights 2000lbs

@@GaryGang911 Sounds awesome!
Useful information appropriate it
Don't fuck with the 460 They are a camshaft away form being a serious beast!
If this is the best comment I’ve ever seen from a the gm guy 😂 it is a beast wym?
Lol GM guys always on Ford videos for some reason
@@BannedSports they are just wallowing in the pity because they didn't make the right choice.
I have a 1992 F250 XLT with a 460 engine. Gas eater but man I love that truck
Those Ford 460 s were some powerful ass Motors
God damn that wheelhop was painful to watch

Try being there in person 😅 it was sketchy
My first dump truck was a 1989 f350 with a 460. It worked hard on a daily basis for me.
Really good video 👍 thanks
Hey man I get it, it's fun to see who's got the best pulling rig. That is so abusive on the whole driveline though, it seems like the winner of that pull was the camera man! Wanna see who has a better towing rig, put your gooseneck on and pull some ag equipment
That diesel was definitely a 7.3 IDI. Those did come on the earlier OBS Fords, before the 7.3 Powerstroke.
willbill808 negative it’s a power stroke
Still a great video all these years later. ❤
Its like watching two old ppl fighting one takes nap like one of those trucks just truns off in the middel of the tug of war
I've owned both and now have two 7.3's. This was a lot of fun and certainly was more on traction than pulling power, but you put 25,000 lbs behind both and I'll take the 7.3 every time. I use to do these with my old 390 and pulled any Chevy until they hollowed stop. lol
I had a 65 f100 with a 390 and it could rip out stumps!!!!
Hey, sorry to bother, I am planning to buy 96 fleeteood, do you have any problems with it? Thanks
I agree on the 460. The torque it has is unbelievable. The best motors that ford has made are the 460 and the 4.9 straight six. The 4.6 coming in at third.
Dude that was awesome
Both are the best.
Thrust bearing doesn't seem to have any play either!
that is the main problem with the 460 is the oiling system. but other than that its a complete power house.
I hope you know the 92 97 body style truck was a 94.5-97 powerstroke.
jrryc1 your 93-97 f150 is fucking UGLY. its underpowered , it aint even a real ford truck . Go 10 to 15 years older for the coolest bodystyle f150 ever made .....
and get yourself a built curberatored 351 Windsor....? It'll put to shame your shit bucket 460.
Btw - hasn't been a real 460 made since the 70s.
it doesn't matter who has more power or traction, it's about the fun!
You deserve a medal. Nobody else seems to get the point. It's a father and son having fun
*Cool!*
And that’s why I ride with the 460🤘
Good ol 460
Awesome truks 👍👍
Ahhhhh that 460, though.
I'm betting the 460 had 4.10s or 4.33s in it while the 7.3 had 3.83. also the 460 was in a heavier truck with better tires
Trystan Waldhart true
I'd say you are right
Although the 460 is a better engine stock. It also sounds like a monster which is a plus. Not shutting down the powerstroke though, you get some turbos and do a little tuning those things will pull like a Mother F*****
The 7.3 was probably geared 3.55 if anything
Yea that just made my day
Remember more Tire area... Less traction... but the lower 410 dually gear ratio helps
It's more about weight and gears then hores and torpue.
THE 460 WINS!
Doggo like "Wut da hUmans dOin!?"
I just bought a 1988 f350 gas 460 for 1,300. All it needed was 2 injectors, front rotors brakes and exhaust manifold gaskets. My god that thing is a beast, But boy is it a PIG 8 to 11 mpg
Back of the gasoline Ford had crap(weight) in it toolbox and such probably loaded down with everything to keep a rebuilt Dodge in top form.
You also can't just outright floor it because then you break traction and end up getting pulled. Gotta find the sweet spot where the tires barely slip
That was friggin fun
That was a blast
460 wins, damn the diesel just uses less revs so it’s ultimately better for towing long distance fuel wise, but for shear dragging power 460 all day long
am i the only one who was waiting for the strap to break? that truck would have went flying into the garage or the gas truck could have shot out into the street when a car was passing by. cool video
I was waiting for a Ujoint to give it up
beautiful boxer
I want both to pull and work out of to know for my usage. Have had a 7.3 these past 13 years but now that I drive 300 miles a day I’d like to blow up a 460 since it’s cheaper even though fuel monthly cost more I’m still getting fuel payed for
Tune the 460in to a diesel and then YOU get one bad ass torque monster of a motor that's how it done my friends
the higher hitch lifts the other truck rear wheels (less traction) these pull offs don't prove much. Hook to a sled or something heavy and see which pulls better.
+Phil Huffman The videos I've seen on this topic mainly show who has better tires and suspension.
+Dave C and weight in the right area
I still think the 460 would win because that engine is a weight pulling monster, just ask my Black Betty 😁
don't forget gearing
Yeah barely not enough to pull the 7.3 up though
Another day in Mississippi 😂. Awesome
As always, the only thing that beats a ford is another ford. (;
steven memez Or a Cummins.
Andy Bradford a toyota? yeah good luck.
steven memez right on brother
7.5 motor may go out before the 7.3 but you get to rebuild it internally and stroke it out to 8.1. i got a 7.5 but would love a 7.3 also. Cant wait till the motor goes
Everybody’s favorite gameshow! Let’s break a trailer ball!
I think tug of wars are so stupid, but here I am watching another video 😆
lots ov stupid things are fun to watch ..
This was all about traction. power had nothing to do with it.
More about who hits their brakes first. In the mud, then we'll talk.
Christopher Bradley Yes traction and gearing but the 7.3 I would say has more torque.
Christopher Bradley umm actually if both trucks have traction it depends on weight and the power so ya it does have a lot to do with the engine
Muchos pick'emup truckos!
I'd love to have either...or BOTH!!!
what's the wheel base of your 99, and what type of tires? traction is the major limiting factor in a tow competition like that (and who breaks parts first)
back to back pull offs don't mean anything I watched a 2wd 1/2 Ton v 6 beat a 4wd 1/2 ton v8 simply for the fact the 2wd didn't have enough power to break the tires lose as soon as the other truck did the 2wd dragged him
2:20 unhappy axle
Before watching I thought the diesel would win but it looks like to me they are evenly matched with maybe the 460 winning a little bit. But as you said it has to do with traction, maybe one's tires are slicker than the other. Nice video.
I love trucking
the 460 is a bad ass motor prolly has more hp than the diesel stock
yep
Yes, probably it is a badass motor...I had one in an F150!
It does
Whats the rating for both engines
I should hope so . Its a giant gasoline motor . If it doesn't then its a complete failure of design . That being said , do you know the stock horsepower and torque specs for those two motors ?
they had the 7.3 in 2wd at first
Both were in 2wd the whole time the 7.3 had a problem with one of the front hubs and the 460 had the ttb front suspension and had a sheared pin in the diff so neither had reliable 4x4 so they agreed to keep it in 2
I like how there oil stains throughout the entire driveway 🤩
Both are made of pure muscle
7.5 vs 7.3
LOL dog told you who was boss LOL
Patrick Baptist Patrick!
I have a 460 for sale out if my 84 Coachman RV. 60k mi on it. No title, in New Mexico, $900. It's the 7.5L
godlike trucks
Anyone notice the fuckin chevy sitting in the yard lol
+mds s best truck there.
gordon ivey yea the broken one is the best....
+mds s OHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Roasted
thats the thing i hate most aboiut a chevy is weedeating around it
That is an older 7.3 that came with no turbo
No The one on the left is a 7.3 powerstroke 94.5-97 which means it had a turbo
Yeeyee Banshee is correct.
Onlt tge old IDI 7.3's were available without a turbo.. 1993 and prior was IDI, after was PSD
The 460 and 7.3 are awesome motors though. We had a 85 f250 460 4 speed with a 750 double pumper it would flat get it
This is how to break your truck
Yeah that Chevy sitting in the yard is not qualified for this. the big boys are playing
That’s right...the big BOYS are playing in their fords...Chevy’s are for MEN and made for work so I guess it don’t qualify
chris medders Chevy is the absolute worst been working on all of the big 3 for 40 years I’ve seen plenty of each but GM is the worst of the 3 no contest
Pozytywnie zakręceni ludzie :):):)
pretty much evenly matched. although the 460 would last longer over the 7.3
Chris Martin They are essentially the same truck. Cabs, frames, axles, springs, all the same. Box and front clips just shaped a little different. The 460 has a 2 liter advantage in displacement and therefore is probably slightly heavier. 460's get terrible mileage but make gobs of power.
jay lesmeister
well when it comes to big blocks, you're not looking for fuel economy, you're looking for power. my old 351w put out about 480hp and got about 10mpg. granted it was a small block, the 3 speed auto and the 4brl carb didnt help with the gas mileage.
My 460 gets 7 mpg stock.
Chris Martin no it wouldnt
SouthernBoy 73
actually yea it would and I will argue that until the day I die
One of the best, toughest trucks I ever owned and belive me I was not kind to it ever a day in its life and I think I paid 3 grand for it and when I sold it I got 2500 for it cash after 4 or 5 yrs of faithful, trouble free daily duty, I was sad when I heard it burned up enuff that he junked it, it would probably still be running today cuz the guy that sold it to me gave me a xerox copy of a magazine article of a guy down south with the identical truck with a million miles on the original block, granted it was owned by a Ford mechanic but it made me feel good enuff to part with my 3 grand for a vehicle with over a quarter million miles on it which I would never do otherwise but it seems those cheap beaters are always the best buys that never let u down, no reason to use first gear, not even fully loaded and starting off on a steep hill, 2nd gear was strong as you would ever need, first gear was just overkill
the diesel is heavier in the front than the gas 460
jore551 umm no no a 7.3 ia a big block and only weights approximately 920lbs and a 460 is a big block too and it weights 2,000lbs
are you sure about that cuz we have a 460 complete on a 1000lbs engine stand
jore551 uh ya guaranteed cuz we had my 460 which is fully complete and we had my uncle find out how much it weighted and it was exactly 2000lbs
idk we don't have a scale all i know is the truck is a twin to the diesel on and the diesel one weighs more by alot and the inter net is useless to find that out
Ya the internet is useless but we couldn't find the exact weight for a 7.3 powerstroke my uncle said is approximately 920lbs and right on the dot the 460 weights 2000lbs
I love 91 f250 xlt lariat.
I was wondering I have the same truck 1987 and its a 4 speed manual so If I was there should I start on first gear to start putting or ???
