    Dave, What made 1 & 2 so great, ARE the darker lit Freddy face scenes and that score for those were great. By the end of the series (mostly 5 & 6) Freddy's makeup was pretty damn shiny and those scenes were well lit up. Aside from the overly comedic Freddy, those elements are what made the later films suck.

    Great order, Dave! What I disliked about the later films was the fact that they made it more comedic. Same thing happened with Halloween Resurrection. When I watch a horror film, I want to be scared - not to laugh. The first two were great at invoking fear! As you said, number three began the transition to more comedic films apart from New Nightmare.

  • @jaquen1977
    @jaquen1977 6 лет назад +6

    Tough to take a ranking seriously that has NOES 2 (which I don't hate) in front of the absolutely brilliant, underrated Wes Craven's New Nightmare. It's the only film that rivals the original for freshness, innovation, and just damn fine quality filmmaking. That aside, my ranking is similar.

    • @jaquen1977
      @jaquen1977 6 лет назад +2

      To each his own. I don't watch Freddy for "fun". The original Nightmare isn't "fun"; it's a relentless pursuit of terror. The more "fun" Freddy got, the worse off for the most part. I love the maturity of New Nightmare, that it's more a character study, a drama, than a slasher film.

    • @jaquen1977
      @jaquen1977 6 лет назад

      I didn't say "horror movies". I said "Freddy". I don't think of the original Nightmare as "fun" at all. Part 4 is, so is Freddy's Dead, and they're toward the bottom of the barrel for me. The only Nightmare I found "fun" in an enjoyable way was the cheesetastic Freddy vs Jason.

    • @rickmorty556
      @rickmorty556 6 лет назад +1

      jaquen1977 I think he just means fun in an exciting, heart pumping way. Fun is a big part of the joy and experience in any great slasher/suspense film. Freddy, when done right, puts on the edge of your seat. And great films are all about drawing an emotional reaction. For him, it seems he can appreciate the filmmaking of New Nightmare, but it doesn't draw the same emotional reaction out of him.

    • @j-stilt9746
      @j-stilt9746 6 лет назад +2

      I think the ranking is spot on. Part 2 gets far too much hate...which most of I think comes from people that don't care a whole lot about Freddy. If you want scary Freddy, you watch part 2, then the original.

  • @cbabb15

    1) A Nightmare On Elm Street
    2) A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge
    3) A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
    4) A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
    5) A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
    6) Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare
    7) New Nightmare
    This is a series where the first three are amazing and every movie after falls steeply down the side of a mountain. And I put New Nightmare last simply based on how meta it was. Basically calling the original movies “movies” and not events that actually happened. That works for some movies when the get rid of bad sequels, but it straight up shits on at least three movies that are fantastic. The meta stuff works so well with Scream, but not A Nightmare On Elm Street.

    My reasoning that 1 is not higher is the ending is so terrible in my honest opinion. My Favorite Nightmare Movie is actually the reboot due to the scariness of Freddy. I love 2 but i agree many people dislike it. The beginning scene of 2 is the best in the series to me.

    And im in the minority i like the 2nd one too..and the third but by then he was becoming a one line joke teller..which was ok but then sadly it got worse and weaker to the point of Freddy becoming funny and less scary ..the first 2 and part 3 is enough.

      I feel with you. I fucking hate the abomination that is Freddy's Dead as much as you do.
      Freddy's Revenge, The Dream Master and even The Dream Child all have some good storylines, compelling characters and some very good practical effects and felt like I was watching a Horror Movie.
      Freddy's Dead has none of this. No effort was put in this 'Movie' at all. The only thing I liked in this atrocity was the Soundtrack 'I'm awake now' from the band Goo Goo Dolls.
      This movie is a giant 'F*** YOU!' to all A Nightmare on Elm Street Fans and to the entire A Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise.
      Thank God Wes Craven came back with New Nightmare and ended this franchise on a good note.
      I'd personally like to go back in time and smack the director of this waste of celluloid Rachel Talalay in the back of the head with every other Nightmare Movie, because clear she never bothered to watch the damn things.

    I've watched the NOES films probably over a hundred times so if I had to rank the originals (escluding Freddy vs. Jason & The remake) based on my favorites, my list would go
    1. A Nightmare on Elm Street
    2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
    3. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's revenge
    4. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
    5. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
    6. Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare
    7. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
    I agree that the dream sequence needs to be real not only because it makes you as the viewer not be able to tell if they're in danger until you see shaddows of Freddy but it makes it relatable and creepy. Then you realize the characters is in trouble which makes Freddy more eerie and creepy. The later films after part 4 became too jokey and not dark and scary like the original 3 were. They instead became watered down and deluted his creepiness as a boogyman. What's irritating is some people actually think that the jokey Freddy was cool and the series was supposed to be that way. No it's not because Freddy is meant to be scary not a damn comedian

    I love horror and most horror franchises but I never really got into Elmstreet or Freddy like that. He’s my least favorite of the main 3 slasher icons (Jason, Michael, Freddy) but I don’t really dislike him or the movies. My favorite is Part 2 Freddy’s Revenge and I think that is because it is so much unlike the rest of the series. I do really like Part 3 too. I’d still rather watch all of the Leprechaun films instead.

    1, 3, and 4 form the "Unofficial Nightmare on Elm Street Trilogy" for me but I'm glad 2 gets more respect these days. It doesn't fit with the rest but on its own it's such a bizarre, creative and absolutely terrifying movie. I think much of what people don't like about (outside of having rules that contradict with the rest of the series) comes down to what you said, the movie is "uncomfortable." It fills you with sense of unease from beginning to end. It's not the funnest Nightmare to re-watch but it is one of the most well made.
    5 is was when things really got stale and 6 is a complete disaster. New Nightmare is a fun meta movie that kinda did Scream before Scream and I thought Demon Freddy was pretty cool.

    Here's the Elm Street Trilogy, & nothing else matters
    My 1st Favorite : A Nightmare on Elm Street ( 1984 )
    My 2nd Favorite : A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors ( 1987 )
    My 3rd Favorite : Wes Craven's New Nightmare Part 7
    Now for A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 Freddy's Revenge ( 1985 ) totally is Scary Elm Street Movie, but a favorite of my, but for the Elm Street House in 2 has different areas which is awesome, just like the Elm Street 1 House.

    We all have different opinions, that's the spice of life. Having said that, it seems to me that "Freddy's scare factor" was your deciding factor. If that's the case, you are correct, the 2nd is the 2nd scariest Freddy. I DO agree with all of your points in regards to 2, except your conclusion. I also like 2, and find it to be the most under appreciated of the series, but I can't say it's better than 3 or New Nightmare. Honestly I go back and fourth between 2 and 4. I think 4 is the better overall film, but 2 has the better Freddy. I also agree they missed an opportunity to keep the story line from 3 going for at least 1 more film. Overall I like your list, but disagree with 2 being the 2nd best, Dream Warriors is the 2nd best (and most others) opinions.
    As for your bottom ranking, I agree that 5 and FD are the worst of the series, but for me, I find FD to be more entertaining. 5 I find some what boring, so it's my least favorite. But I'm not going to argue 5 vs FD, they are both weak imo.
    Overall good list though, and I agree with most of your points.

    This list was going ok then you said something completely WRONG so it negates your ranking...you said "dream warriors" is NOWHERE NEAR as good as 1 that's wrong...dream warriors is not only as good as 1 but most Nightmare on Elm St fans would agree including myself, that Dream Warriors is the best film of the franchise with the original being a close 2nd
    P.S. most Nightmare on Elm Street fans would not dislike Freddy's revenge 2nd to last after Freddy's dead that honor goes to Nightmare on Elm Street 5

    I don't think that the first film has held up very well. It looks cheap and shoddy (see especially the blow-up doll at the end), and the acting is atrocious, even in comparison to the Friday the 13th films. That said, the script (despite the awful dialogue) is pretty strong, and the concept was at its freshest there. Part 2 essentially stripped away every unique idea from the first film and reduced Freddy to just another ghost in a haunted house. That said, the subtext largely redeems the missteps. Part 3 is the one that finally let the material reach its potential. It takes some motifs that were executed poorly in the first movie (e.g. a character's feet sticking to the floor) and executes them correctly. Also, Freddy's one-liners still feel mean-spirited here.
    Part 4 is barely even a movie. It's a decent-looking music video, I guess, but they were nuts to think that they could make it without a finished script. It's essentially incoherent, and not in the dreamlike fashion of Phantasm or Suspiria. Part 5 is basically in the same boat as Part 2: the best thing it has going for it is the subtext--in this case, teen pregnancy and abortion. You also need a flowchart to follow the logistics of Freddy's resurrection here (but hey, at least there is some logic behind it, unlike in Part 4). Part 6 is, in retrospect, a warm-up act for New Line's adaptation of The Mask. It's basically Part 3 remade as a live-action version of Merrie Melodies.
    Part 7 is, for my money, easily the best film in the entire series. Heather Langencamp drastically improved as an actor over the decade between the original and this film, and that makes all the difference. Craven too had made major strides in his craft as both a director and a screenwriter, and the movie overall feels like his chance to do this premise justice at last. Freddy vs. Jason is at least better than Parts 4 and 6, but I may give Parts 2 and 5 the edge for their thematic weight. The remake was a waste of time and money. It appears to be trying to blend the first and fourth films together, but it doesn't bother to fix the problems of either one, and it's just a bore.

    Out of the horror slasher franchise this franchise haven't got stupid. The first 6 wasn't a shit show. West Craven's New Nightmare was a shit show. It didn't make no sense. To have a great movie and it continues you need to have dreams like in 4th-6th films.

    My ranking:
    1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
    2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
    3. New Nightmare
    4. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
    5. Freddy vs. Jason

    7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
    8. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
    9. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
    A Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite of the slasher movie series. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 on my list change often. I like the top 5 in the list. The rest I don't care for. There are a few things I like about Freddy's Revenge, but overall I think it's the worst one in the series.

    My Ranking:
    (9. Freddy's Dead The Final Nightmare (1991). Holy Moly. This movie is garbage, there is nothing to like about this film, it ignores everything in the franchise and puts dog crap on the table, the movie is horrible, the characters. horrible. The Kills. Horrible. Freddy Krueger. Horrible. This real life looking nightmare is too much of a looney tunes cartoon. I mean everthing from the goofy Freddy to the goofy kills is just terrible. Its actually a painful movie to get trough because it is god awful, its one of the worst horror movies ever made, its one of the worst movies in movie history Of FREAKING EVER, it smells.
    0/10
    (8. A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010) Now. Its not a really terrible movie but its NOT close to being a GOOD movie, This remake completly tried to recreate everything we have all come to know in love about the Original, its not great, and its not creative, but Jackie Earle Haley was... kind of good... Actaully. but sadly he didnt succeed because he got a really sh*tty script to work with, but im glad he at least tried to do something rather than being like Rooney Mara who just didnt give a BEEP about this movie or any other horror movies, it has some good visuals, and really bad CGI but for what it is its not really terrible because theres some good things here and there.
    3,5/10
    (7. A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. (1989)
    To be honest, this movie is also not really terrible, its not good but its not terrible it is just a bad Nightmare On Elm Street Movie. The kills are good, The Practical Effects are good, and the story is good but Freddy is just not... Good, i think Comedic One-Liner Freddy went way too far here, the makeup is also not good, its really bad, but it is not near to being as bad as Freddy's Dead. Nowhere Near to being as bad as that natural distaster, but its still bad.
    3,7/10
    (6. Freddy VS Jason. (2003) So... um. Finally we got this film after waiting over 10 years, and it does pretty good actually. But look, the problem is... the visual effects, i really hate whenever i see bodies flying around, its just annoying, the characters are annoying, theres some bad one liners here and there, but as a VS movie it does pretty well, it is a very fun movie to watch but not a really great movie tho.
    5,8/10
    (5. Wes Craven's New Nightmare. (1994) This film was probably here because Freddy's Dead was the most terrible way to end this series so herw we go again, we got New Nightmare and it was originally going to be the 3rd movie but it was later used here. It is a good movie bur its just not a good Freddy movie, like we dont get to see our Demon Freddy until a hour in, we get to see our boy Freddy but not the real evil Freddy, New Nightmare aldo doesnt have any good kills if you ask me, its a good movie but not one of my favorites
    6/10
    (4. A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. (1988) Now The Dream Master is slowly but surely becoming one of my favorites, this one might be your favorite as a kid but i think That The Dream Master is not the best, the ressurection part is god awful, what happens is that Freddy gets a visit from a dog and then he pisses on hes grave WTF!? The End of Freddy here is very underrated, i think its great and it needs more love while i see why people dont like it
    7,6/10
    (3. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) this one is very underrated, when you look at peoples lists you will see this all over the place, the 2nd Film is very unique, it breaks a lot of rules but it really works because of what Freddy is trying to do here, he inside our main character Jessie, and pops out of his body and crashes pool partys and all that stuff. In the real world. This movie is great in my opinion it deserves more love than it gets and it will probably not remain number 3 the entire time because its just so different, i mean Freddy isnt just Freddy here, Freddy and Jessie Shares the same body so its not the best but its still one of the best
    7,8/10
    (2. A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, or is this number 1... or 2? I cant really decide whats the best of these 2, the Original or the 3rd Movie in the franchise, F*** it. Original is the best, this one is flawed but its still one of my favorite movies of all time. they get the story right, the characters right and everything right it really works trough thw whole movie, the kills are great, the One-Liners are great and everything is just great, nearly great, and this is something that no one ever really talks about, the practical effects are awesome, why does nobody mention this!?
    9,4/10
    (1. The Original Nightmare On Elm Street created in 1984, beautiful masterpiece with classic scary scenes with freddy who only got 7 mintues of screen time and it really works, its just awesome, sorry, but this is the best horror movie ever made in history of ever its just so good. The ending is uhhh... good first i guess. Its just perfection.
    9,4/10

    You're crazy, the 2nd elm street is the worst one. The 1st and the 3rd are the best , 1st is scariest 3rd is the most fun to watch. New nightmare is great. 4 is okay 5 is not as good as 4 and freddy dead is bad, but not as bad as 2
