    • @LSCsani

2Faded Dominic You heard the scandal about vw diesels i hope(not just vw did that tho). It burns on trash fuel, the excess of making petrol, dont tell me its “healthier”. while in a petrol car(what is stock) only water and co2 comes out of the exhaust, while a diesel smoke is more complex i think. And have you seen a dpf regeneration process? They dont count that into the emissions when they test it. Also its a trend in the eu that guys cut out the cat and woaa it smoking like a coal factory, diesels are for long distances, like you fill it up and drive 200miles or so. Or trucks. I simply hate them, hate working on them, hate driving them. By the way what you replied to was supposed to point out that japanese diesel cars are not that good and reliable as some people think
This reply got out of hand real quick sorry

I've watched a lot of car reviews on RUclips, but your style is by far the most thorough and interesting of them all! I really appreciate the technical insight and first-person view you give. Please, do more reviews! I wish to see European cars, but anything would do. Just keep this style and I'll watch every review you make! Awesome, thanks!

This is an old car as the Jetta Mk6 is ultimately derived from the ancient Golf Mk5 from September 2003. This means the Jetta is even even older than you. The questions begs: why do you want a sedan at all? A Golf hatchback is far more versatile and practical. You ought to be aiming for a 2012 Golf Mk7, as this is a much newer car compared to the Golf Mk6 / Jetta Mk6. 🇩🇪 🇪🇺

This is hands down the best vehicle review I have ever watched! I have been looking for a review of the 2015 Jetta TDI SEL 6 Speed, and I found it! Your review was excellent, however I wish you would've showed a quick demo of the driver aids such as the collision warning or the BSM. If you get the chance to drive this vehicle again that would be awesome. Thank you for the excellent comprehensive review, I can't wait to purchase one.

I have an American 15 Passat TDI SE with Sunroof, wanted the full sized to have more room for family.
I absolutely love it and does great on the highway, which I do a lot of driving on. The highest I got the mpg up to was 58.6 on the highway. At a 16 gallon tank I can theoretically max it out 938 miles on a single tank. That is a drive from New York City to Jacksonville Florida on one tank.
Sure the exterior went the safe route and didn't do anything crazy, but looking at other cars I was in the market for, the Civic, Cruze, Legacy, they didn't blow my mind on the exterior either.
The interior is comfortable, clean, modern and German feeling.

the 2.0 TDI is probably one of the most sold Engines atm in germany, due to being sold in the A3, A4, A... Golf, Passat, ... Skoda Octavia and so... We got one in our A4 Avant quattro (177hp, manual) and it's a really nice engine for driving on the Autobahn. By the way: The S4 also had a spot to store your sunglasses, right infront of the center light ;)

Just a quick warning to anybody thinking about modifying this vehicle: My 6 speed MKVI TDI has a DPF and two cats. It's straight piped from the axel back and makes absolutely no sound over stock. Deleting the DPF is absolutely mandatory to get any sort of performance gains (you'll need a tune as well since deleting it throws codes like crazy) so I'd honestly recommend the MKIV TDI since there is no DPF because it was before the requirement. Not sure if DPF deletes are legal in other states, but it is illegal here in California. That being said, the car is excellent for its price. I put in 15 bucks a week and do a considerable amount of driving. School, work, picking up my brother from his school, car meets, general errands, etc. The manual transmission is fun, but like he said, plenty of vibration in the clutch pedal. It's definitely luxurious, but there are bolts EVERYWHERE. Yes, the annoying torx screw ones. There's like 8 on the air box alone. Doesn't seem like there's too much room for modification, but it's a decently fun car and the gas mileage is no joke. I can achieve up to 60 MPG on the highway driving like a grandma.

This is really THE best review in the RUclips. Great job, really helps a lot.
There are so many options in this price range.
I'm consider between 2015 Mazda 3, 2015 Civic, 2015 Dodge Dart and VW Jetta. One thing I'm worry about TDI is that if I park the car outside in the winter for overnight, will I have trouble to start it next day?

And if you decide to tune (chip) this TDI you make near 180 hp, 300 lb-ft torque and get better mpg.
In the MK4 generation TDI you could get 220 whp and near 320 lb-ft while getting 50 mpg highway with just a turbo/injector and tune. Diesel has a lot of potential, i don't know why it isn't more popular in the states

The ban is more of a punishment than a protection. You can still find these used everywhere and if anything demand is going up because they're new and cheap, and if maintained last a long time. But there are plenty of these still out there and dealerships fix the ECU to make it US compliant. Take it from someone who works at a VW dealer. These cars get a lot of respect and attention within the VW fanbase.

This engine is a CBEA if I'm not mistaken. Nearly identical to the CJAA as found in my 2014 Jetta TDI.
When you first start the car it takes a few minutes to start blowing cool. It actually feels like heat for the first minute and a half or so. You get the coldest air when the vehicle is in motion. I do notice when I'm at idle it will blow slightly warmer but I have a 4runner and TSX that do the same thing. I live in Tennessee. I am speaking for when it's 85/90f+.

Clutch vibrations are actually common, I drive '10 Golf TDI and I can also feel them sometimes. I think it's because of heavier dual mass flywheel, because it's diesel with strong torque at low rpms and more of the vibrations transfer to clutch itself.

Ok. Lets clear things out. Those front flaps are NOT for aerodynamics. It's to prevent engine cooling (yes, prevent). You know, when it's -30C outside and you're going anything above 60 kph your clutch cylinder will start freezing and coolant temperature will drop below 90C even though thermostat is closed. Especially with diesel engines, since they are generally "colder". So those flaps will open only when cooling is required.

the first thing I do to this car is cut off the exhaust system and have something sporty put on it. Now I'm not a young man anymore but I have a Subaru 98 legacy that has a modified exhaust I just love the sign of the engine. And I'd like to hear the turbo on that engine coming out the tail and also the diesel sound.obviously it's not a V8 diesel or an inline-6 so it's not going to make a lot of chattering sounds but I would probably remove the insulation under the hood just so I could maybe hear that engine.
My goal is to keep the Subaru in and one day get this car.

It's interesting as an engineer that you mentioned the "gas mileage" it gets. That's something I chastise my wife for doing when stating that. She put"gas" in my ecodiesel jeep when she borrowedit. I implore with her to always just call it fuel if she can't remember diesel and beg her to tell me she didn't put gas in it. Regardless of what type of fuel the car takes, "fuel" is generic and therefore accurate, whether it's her car Which is
out of gas or mine which is low on diesel. Just changing the vernacular to say we need fuel or get good fuel mileage seems easy enough to me (not too disruptive). Sorry to be a stickler for good diction (which you normally have. As a diesel fan, this particular thing stands pout to me like a sore thumb.

When you buy a used car there are no guarantees with its true mechanical condition and longevity. You assume all risks.
For reliability and technological relevance there is no comparison to a new car. Ever.

Great review... I WISH Subaru would bring over the Boxer Diesel! i actually did test drive this... maybe 2013? but not much has changed. The one i tested has the DSG trans. and it was pretty awesome!..... BUT i still wanted AWD and boy with this winter I'm glad I got my Subaru!! So hope to have it for at least 6 or 7 years and my next car i am definitely considering diesel.

I’m narrowing it down between a 2016 Mazda 6 grand touring or one of these Jettas! I hate that the Mazda 6 GT isn’t offered in manual transmission but they’re both overall great daily cars.

So, would you consider a 5000$ gap as justified in comparison to the Corolla?

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  10 лет назад +6

Very good question. The base starts at under $22k, though the base Corolla is maybe $17-18k. I've driven the Corolla LE and wasn't as impressed as I was with the Corolla S. Diesels will pretty much always be more expensive, but I thought this was a fantastic car. If you're considering between the two I say test drive them and see what you think.

    • @EngineeringExplained

elwulfo666 Let me add, I thought the Jetta was more fun to drive. The Corolla is certainly more economical, and comes with Toyota's undeniable reputation of reliability.

elwulfo666 I would say the vw would blow the doors of a corolla in terms of quality of materials, i even just closing the door on vw feels solid, when it comes to the corolla it sounds like a hollow door. Test both cars and see for your self

It;s nice to see diesel power coming to USA - more efficient than petrol for long journies. And it's manual. Good job! It's a lovely car by the way, if you drive sensibly you will get 50 plus MPG easily.
Being from the UK diesel power is common here.
Though I'd love to drop a Cummins diesel in there :D

Diesels used to only get marginally better consumption than gasoline engines, coupled with the fact that they're more expensive to buy initially, made them considerably less attractive to buyers. The fuel costs more and it will take many, many years to pay off the cost of the engine itself through fuel savings, so unless you need the torque for hauling it's hard to justify diesels. I bet the new Focus and Fiesta will give this car a run for it's money when it comes to fuel with the 1.0L EcoBoost.

Just subscribed to your channel. Thanks so much for putting this together. I know that this video is a bit old but I have a general VW question. With the Diesel Scandal in 2015 to present would you still recommend buying a VW? I'm thinking of a used VW Golf in particular (2010-2014 maybe?). What about repairs especially as a used car? Thanks again. Look forward to some replies from you and the community!

I think I would seriously consider trading in my 2013 Civic Hybrid for one of these. Yes, diesel is more expensive but look at that insane mpg and range. It's worth it because you don't have to fill up nearly as much as a gasoline car.

That’s insane gas mileage for the ‘15 TDI. I have a ‘09 Jetta 2.5L automatic and it gets 21 city, 30 highway. I have to fill up for gas like once or twice a month. I use the car for short distance driving. So I make the best out of the mpg.

For me I was comparing this to the corolla s review you did a while ago and I would definitely take the corolla just because it's about $5000 cheaper and reliable engine, I know this has german engineering but I have always been a fan of japanese cars especially toyota. I would really like to hear your opinion and other guys who are watching this video.

    • @EngineeringExplained

khaled webster Someone else commented similarly. If it was narrowed down to those two (which, there are probably some other cars I'd look at as well), the Jetta is going to provide a more enjoyable driving experience. The Toyota will get the job done, and has Toyota's reliability track record on the table.

I am curious to know what sub model this is. I currently own a 2015 VW TDI SEL w/ a DSG transmission. My model, made in March of 2015, has 4 wheel independent suspension, not the multil link track axle you show here. My dashboard is also different. I have a digital fuel gauge & no temperature gauge. Furthermore, my multifunction display does not show oil temperature. And you mention this model has adaptive headlights, turning left to right, yet I have never seen any VW with the exception of the Phateon (discontinued). Also your model doesn’t have a trunk lid spoiler nor did you mention the DEF tank in the trunk in the right rear...

The gear change will get better with time, the Mk 7 Golf also is like that. It will get much smoother after 10k miles.
However, the clutch pedal fell is awkward. You can't really feel where it starts to slip. You get used to it, yes. But the Mk 5 was and still is better after >300k and even a '95 Opel Astra feels better after 180k...

I have one of these but mine is an A3 TDI I bought locally. So far I really like the fuel economy. I did have to do a couple of warranty claims and there's this weird electric issue I'm having but over all I enjoy it.
Do you have any tips for first time diesel owners? I've driven gasoline since I was 16 and this isn't a car I'm super familiar with. I've been doing my own research on maintenance but if you have any tips I'd love to hear them.
