- I embark on an epic solo road trip from Austin to Albuquerque in the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Can I make the 701 mile trip on one tank of diesel fuel? Can I make it to ABQ and visit all the cool Breaking Bad locations? Can anyone properly spell Albuquerque the first time? Will I do better than the EPA estimate of 46 MPG HWY?

Man, you rock! Out of many fuel economy testers, including some well-known channels, your method is the most reliable and most scientific. On top of that, you solved one of my biggest questions on the 2015 Jetta TDI (same car I have w/DSG). For about a year I have driven this vehicle, I always wondered why the on-board computer always shows an inflated fuel mileage number. Your explanation nailed this answer: I tend to put more than 14.5 gallons of fuel in the tank and the computer does not take this into the account. By the way, according to my calculation, my car actually gets about 48 MPG on long trips with normal driving. This pretty much matches the number you have in the video (701 miles on 14.7 gallons). I guess the MPG numbers are the same for both manual and DSG on this car, although I still regret on not insisting on getting the manual from the dealer.

New Mexico is crazy. When I drove from Phoenix to Amarillo back in the summer of 2017, my cars GPS had me on US 60 and various NM state routes before finally getting me to I-40 outside Albuquerque. I am glad I drove during the day. The towns I passed through looked a little creepy on the US routes.
Another amazing journey across the big, wide state of Texas. I loved every minute of it. Can't wait for part deaux!

I have a 2015 golf tdi standard trans. On the highway at 112 kph or 70 mph I get 4 litres per 100 kms. Great mileage and a great driving car.
$39 full tank wow that's about £31 for £31 you get half a tank a full tank on this car in UK is about $80 to $90 equivalent you guys are so blessed.
Well, if you think about it a lot of other stuff is muuuch more expensive in US then for us living in Europe. We also pay (I live in Sweden ) 3-4 times as much as the americans for diesel and gas.

Very informative video. I have a 2011 Jetta Sportwagon TDI with the DSG 6spd. You'rs tach's about 300-rpm less than mine in 6th. It could account for much of the difference I noted in our respective mileage scores.
Interesting. This was a press car. VW could have done anything to it. I drove it just before dieselgate broke out and this car felt different.

You're driving on country roads at very economical speeds 50 - 65 mph (80 - 105 km/h). That's why you're range was much longer than what the computer calculated to be. Plus, it's a manual transmission which means minimal powertrain losses.

No car that I've ever owned or driven had a had gauge that was accurate at the "1/2" point. The only thing the mid ranges on a fuel gauge tell you is that there is fuel in the tank, maybe.

I drive a Toyota Fortuner, 2007. V6, 4.0 it's the Asian version of the Highlander. Built on the Hilux platform. Max I got out of a tank was 500 Kms with no stops. Very tough car.
My wife's Mercedes Benz E300 gives 1100 theoretical range, but never tested it.
I am considering a VW DIESEL. How are used diesels when it comes to maintenance and what to look for? What fautls has yours developed over time?
Should get that AC checked. I know the systems are slightly different from gasoline to diesel, but the air conditioning in my Jetta freezes me to death

When a diesel car runs out of gas and air gets into the lines it's not a fun thing to purge. On the older cars you would have to disconnect the fuel lines and feed them with new fuel with gravity I think in the newer Volkswagens you have to access the ECU and have it Prime the lines from the fuel pump. Not something you would want to happen in Albuquerque

I don't see anyone talk about the AC. I drive on the east coast and many months/yr we don't use AC. I wonder how many mpg's the AC takes away. My guess is you're losing 2-3 mpg (~5%) with the AC on.

I hope I'm not igniting an old flame I just bought one of these used and I love it but I was always under the impression that topping g off was a bad idea. I live in new England and we have large fluctuation in temperature. So the idea is that the extra room allows for expansion in the tank. I could be wrong but I never top off and don't see the need with a 6 speed TDI
If you're filling it up and driving it for endless hours, expansion room won't be an issue because you're burn rate will exceed the need for space.

701 miles with 14.72 gallons of fuel is 47.62 MPG (Not 53mpg) - pretty good either way.

You're lucky that your drive in ABQ was not windy. Last time i when there was a 35-45 mph side gust and i was fighting the wind which wore me out after 4 hrs in to my 7 hrs drive and took a toll on MPG on a prius I think we burned 16-18 gallons to go from 540 miles at 80-85 mph trip says 38.9 mpg average.
+zech007 You are correct and I wish there was a cross wind so that I could explain how the VW electromechanical steering is designed to counter cross winds. Ultimately, a rear wheel drive vehicle would have eliminated the possibility of fatigue in that situation. Thanks for watching!
i wonder if you have noticed a high pitch whine from the fuel pump when you drive with low level of diesel in the tank. On a trip from phoenix to albuquerque (yes i live in albuquerque) the fuel pump would over heat when the fuel level was low.

+criznitty That's a good question. I'm working on part 2 of this video. In a nutshell, I drove from Austin, TX to Albuquerque, NM to El Paso, TX and back to Austin, TX. I drove 1,600 miles in 48 hours (including one night in a hotel) and I was not fatigued. The 2015 has an improved ride. My only complaint is that the seats in this Jetta are not as supportive as the Golf on long drives. However, you can take off for a weekend and get back to work on Monday like nothing happened. In light of that, I'd say the Jetta TDI is good for road trips. However, the Jetta TDI does face some competition these days with the Golf. There is also the Chevy Cruze diesel to consider, which is said to have more comfortable seats but a louder cabin. Thanks for watching and commenting.
You shouldn't top up to the brim, the fuel gets into the evap system and it'll eventually throw a code.
There is no evap system on the TDI. Gasoline is a solvent and has fumes. Diesel is not the same.

i have been wanting a Passat or Jetta Tdi but a good friend of mine suggested not to because of reliability... what is your take on that?
I bought a new 2010 Jetta TDI manual back in 9/2009. Drove it across the country (DC to CA) at least 8 times. Put 115k miles on it in 2.5 years. It never missed a beat. The timing belt is due at 120k, and it's advised to replace the water pump while getting the work done. Other than that, the DPF only has a limited amount of life before it gets clogged with ash. In essence, don't own a diesel if you're not going to drive it over long distances. City driving will clog the dpf sooner. Highway driving will net the best fuel economy and keep it running like a clock. Rear brakes lasted to 60k miles. Tires could have lasted longer but I had a gouge on the inside facing sidewall. Dealer replaced all tires AND wheels and put on new brakes for $1k at 60k miles. That was my only expense. I did oil changes every 10k myself. ruclips.net/video/RN93fWHL6zU/видео.html
I like the 2010 Jetta the most because it came with a better suspension and the interior was top notch compared to the newer ones. The newer Jettas are bigger and cheaper. I bought a 2013 Passat in 11/2013. Got rid of it after 3 months/7k miles. Do not get a Passat.

+Tim Barton You are correct at 47.6 mpg, rather than the trip computer's 53 mpg. However, that's based on the fill-up which includes topping-off the tank before and after the trip. The car's math will always be incorrect because, technically, we're using more fuel than the allocated/known tank capacity, so it will always skew higher on the trip computer. I use the car's mpg display because that's worth relying on for accuracy.... even if it's not. In this case, I did not like the fuel gauge guessing game, so relying on consumption and range figures in the trip computer is what got me to the finish line. Also 701 miles was the finish line before the fuel stop. The mileage at the fuel stop was 702.7 which is visible in the video @ 27:27, making total trip mpg 47.7. Still, that's remarkable for a sedan that can carry 5 people and luggage for 700 miles for $39.16 in fuel ($7.83 per person with 5 on-board / $9.79 with 4 on-board). If you're going to a concert or out of town with friends, this is the car to take if you're on a budget. Thanks for watching!

But I suppose the biggest difference in day to day driving is the delicious torque and very low rpms on the highway...something you definitely don't get in any other 40+ mpg car
+Tim Barton These are great questions! The torque is what diesels are all about. More gasoline engines are adopting diesel technology. Direct Injection and higher compression in gas engines make them more like diesels. Some DI gas engines even sound like diesels at this point. Gas DI engines now have torque down low in the rev range, but they will likely never get the astonishing torque or economy figures of diesel. This is because diesel fuel has more energy density.
Maintenance requirements on a diesel are simple. Oil changes every 10k miles, fuel and air filters every 20k miles. Diesels use glow plugs to assist with starting in temperatures below 41 degrees Fahrenheit. The TDI also requires Ad-Blue diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which costs about $14 for 2.5 gallons and should last up to 10k miles. Overall, diesel maintenance is going to be higher because you'll be replacing the fuel filters more often than a gas di engine. However, you won't be replacing spark plugs and you won't be dealing with ethanol blended gasoline if you have a diesel engine.
But there's another factor to consider. Range. A di gas car might get 40 mpg highway, but what is the tank capacity? Look past mpg stats and look at range per tank. That number is not published - you must calculate that on your own. Take the BMW 328i and 328d, for example. You could go nearly 13% further on 1,000 gallons of fuel in the diesel 3-series 553 miles (35 mpg *15.8 gal) vs 630 miles (42 mpg *15 gal). Don't forget what those 1,000 gallons will cost today at Shell in Austin, TX: $2.559 93 octane vs $2.279 diesel. That's $280 right there just in fuel, but you can go 35,000 miles in the 328i for $2559 or 42,000 miles in the 328d for $2279. Now, diesel fuel filter maintenance costs are absorbed by the fuel price disparity - and you can also go 7,000 miles further in the diesel. Furthermore, you need another 200 gallons of gas ($511.80) just to keep up with the range on the 328d. But that means total cost of fuel for 42,000 miles between the 328i and 328d is $3070 vs $2279 respectively. So why the emphasis on maintenance? You've already blown $791 on fuel just to catch up to the 328d.... at today's fuel prices. You won't see that in the window sticker. You can do this calculation based on city/combined/highway for each comparison you want to make.
When it comes to purchase prices between identical cars, one gas and one diesel, the diesel will cost more. Diesels have more exhaust devices and they also have more sound proofing - and you get what you pay for. Most likely, the diesel version will weigh more and be quieter than the gas version because of the sound proofing.
You'll get that premium back when you sell. Just look at Mercedes E320 Bluetec vs E55/E63 prices of the same vintage, as well as used Jetta prices for gas vs diesel. Or check out Audi Q5 and Audi Q7 gas vs diesel resale prices. Even the BMW 535i vs 535d prices. It's partly driven by the current low prices in diesel fuel, but if you have a diesel car in your garage right now, you wouldn't sell it.
After writing all this, I might just go out there today and create a video just on this response!

Why would you use a towel on the fuel nozzle??
Diesel fuel nozzles are always covered in diesel fuel. Diesel doesn't evaporate like gasoline does so when you spill it is stays where it landed.
