SEAL Wrote this Song and thought it wasn't worthy enough. It took his Producer Trevor Horn ( from the Buggles fame) to convince him it was worth it and it became his first #1 Record in the US.
Seal is a true talent; what a voice - what a personality... charismatic, for sure. if you get the chance, react to Seal and his first big hit in the States, 'Crazy'...
The song lyrics are a direct reference to the 1989 Batman movie. This was the “love theme” song from the movie. Without the movie the lyrics don’t make much since.
I do not know what Seal intended, but I always interpreted them this way: Imagine walking in a gray world with no color..and suddenly, you see a red rose. How much more poignant that color is and your eyes are drawn to it because everything else is dull. He is comparing that woman to that feeling. How she brings color and meaning to an otherwise dull and dreary existence. Whether or not that is what he is saying is beyond me, but that is how I see it.
I empathize with you on your challenge on the cryptic lyrics. I am a 45+ year music enthusiast and been listening to this song for over 25 years, and honestly never contemplated what the lyrics for this one were really getting at. Your reaction made me think about it and from that fresh perspective nope, I don’t have an immediate answer for you. I suppose there are fans or articles out there for the answer. Keep up this channel and more Billy Joel and Bee Gees please, you’ve only scratched the surface on both, although from time to time you may encounter blocking, so I understand that limitation too.
This song was in the movie "Batman Forever". Seal has never revealed exactly what this song means except that it is about "some kind of relationship that inspired it".
It’s about a love that is more of an obsession, like an addiction to a drug….kiss by a rose on the grave, meaning he would die for this love just like an addict will die for the high of the drug
I know I'm hella late (I just discovered your channel today) but you need to check out Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great" analysis of this song. He actually calls up Seal to ask him about something and they talk about it.
It's abour cocaine. Snow, kiss of a rose on the grave (being revived from feeling dead), flower is in bloom (cocaine abundance season), eyes getting wide, addiction....yeah. Even if it's not cocaine it's about drugs.

I will check that out. Thank you!

Thank you so much for watching. I'm excited to dig into their catalogs.

I love the song. I just wish I knew what he was singing about...lol

This was a song made for one of the "BAT MAN" movies in the 90's
Seal didn't write for Batman, but it was used in Batman.
The lyrics remind me of Edgar Allan Poe. I don't really care what they mean, it's just a beautiful song.

The lyrics you have mistakenly used "grave" several times, but it is "a rose on the grey". As far as I know Seal has remained vague about the meaning.
Thank you for clarifying this!!! The grave is nowhere on the official lyrics
@@robertmitchell4512 But a rose on a grave does makes sense.

The lyrics are incorrect, “I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey” are the correct lyrics.

You're not missing anything! It's a beautiful song but it doesn't make sense. Think about it 🤔
