"Fred Sanford In Traffic Court" is a scene you've got to see. Fred has some strong opinions, the judge sets him straight, and Fred has a comeback. Adult language was not a big deal on primetime television in the 1970s...
I was young, but I still watched the programs and legendary films of my parent's and grandparent's era. I'm surprised when I hear young people say that this is their first time watching or listening to a classic that merely dates back a few generations. Some of these shows still air on TV today. 📺
My dad said that in the early 60s, right after he got out of the Air Force, he went to see Redd Foxx at a club. For another great 70's sitcom reaction. Check out "The best of Mr. Roper". From 3's Company. He would always make fun of his wife, then look right into the camera and laugh. It was hilarious 😂
And the double entendres were wild. Remember when Mr. Roper would come to the kids apartment to fix something and overhear them talking about something that he thought was something else. And those big eyes of his. And Don Knotts did it too as Mr. Farley.
@@davidrigsby4828 Fun Fact: When they did the Ropers spinoff they had a clause in their contract that if it did work then they could return to 3's Company but Don Knotts was so good as Mr. Furley that they axed the Ropers.
Yes, Fred and Esther set the standard for that type of back and forth. Martin and Pam on "Martin", Al Bundy and Marcy on "Married w/Children", and even George and Florence on "The Jeffersons" followed the formula set by Fred and Esther.
Yes and no... I think it was originally ignited on "I Love Lucy" between Fred and Ethel. However, it was raised to a whole new level on The Dick Van Dyke show between Buddy and Mel. Mel still played more of a straight man but by the end of the series, he was slicing up Buddy just as much. Buddy was relentless! I think Fred and Esther were influenced by both productions and blended them into their own, which was then blatantly copied by the ones you listed.

One of the best quips Fred ever delivered was an episode in which he thought he was dying and Esther came to visit him while he was reflecting on his life through some old photos. He was praising his deceased wife Elizabeth for how pretty she was and Esther said something to the effect of, "Elizabeth wasn't the only beautiful one, beauty runs in my whole family." What some people will probably not realize is that LaWanda Paige(Ester) and Redd Foxx(Fred) were the best of friends. Thier comedy careers go way back together before Sanford & Son. There's a famous old photo of them, Redd is graciously sevring LaWanda a drink. It shows how much they really loved each other. Actually, the idea of the insultive relationship between Fred & Ester was LaWanda's idea.
As you said Rob Reiner is Carl Reiner's son, but he was also married to Penny Marshall (Laverne & Shirley) during All In The Family. And Penny Marshall was sister of Garry Marshall, who wrote for Carl Reiner's "Dick Van Duke Show".

One of the funniest jokes from Aunt Esther. Fred told Esther "Sticks and stones my break my bones, but names will never hurt me. Aunt Esther responded, "Well, I will get some some sticks and stones and break your bones, and the name that will hurt is Esther."
Rob Reiner was great as "Meathead". How his character put up with Archie Bunker's crap and didn't knock him out is beyond me. As far as Fred and Aunt Esther, they were the best at hating each other and had no shame in letting each other know it.
Seeing you guys watching this video makes me appreciate the fact that I got to see this show as a youngster in the 1970s. I was roughly ten when it finished its original run. It's intriguing to watch the reactions of people young enough to be my own children and appreciating the hilariousness of this show. As you can see, Redd Foxx and La Wanda Page had unmatched chemistry on the screen. This show proved to be the death knell for The Brady Bunch, which simply couldn't match this sitcom for true humour.
Rob Reiner has credits back to the late sixties. Director of "Stand By Me" and actor in "Throw Momma From The Train" are two of my favorites. One interesting thing about him is that he was married to Penny Marshall of "Laverne and Shirley" during the seventies.
The 70s was a decade if a lot of extrene social change for the world and definitely in America. I was a kid in the 70s and a teen to 20s in the 80s. The 70s began a rapid switch over from Traditional Family Values spiked by the Socal Trauma from the Vietnam War, Women's Liberation Movement, The Gay Movement and a drastic normalization of Divorce as socially acceptible. This is why we saw a lot of Sitcoms and other shows being focused on these social topics.. sort of as Change Agents to push along the Social Engineering that was taking place implemented by those "Ruling the World". This still happens today.. Movies, TV and Socail Media are used to influence psychological change, which leads to change in peoples opinions and actions, within the world's population. It was long ago proven very effective to use "Programming"... to implement socail change. Great videos guys!!
One of those commercials was filmed across the street from my mother in-laws house on Worth St. in Dallas Tx. When we visited her the next day she went "they filmed a commercial yesterday with Aunt Ester from Sanford and Son. I went why didn't you call us? If Kenny Rogers was across the street, wouldn't you be pissed if I didn't call you! Needless to say, I was very upset.
I hope you can view these great comedy clips knowing the fact that Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page were childhood friends and Redd insisted on LaWanda auditioning for the role of Aunt Esther
The series was an adaptation of a British comedy series called Steptoe and son. The British series had two actors who portrayed comedic characters and it showed in the tone of the series that constantly swayed from comedy to tragedy. With Sanford and son, it was played by comedians and played for laughs as well as expanding to included Aunt Esther, Grady and Bubba. They were two different shows but Sanford is a rare successful adaptation of a classic British comedy.
Redd & LaWanda were great friends in real life and he the writers create "Esther" for LaWanda, that's why they almost always had to take a second while doing their sparring as they would constantly make each other laugh or see who could make the other break character.
"And you remember when you look in the mirror tonight, the Lord gave you that face, and you STUCK with it. Ho Glory!" Gets a good laugh out of me every time. :)
I’m loving these. Man this takes me back. I truly believe this is why places like cali and New York have more diversity. We can laugh at our stupidity and come to see the wonderfulness in all of us as humans 😊
Yea the verbal battle between Pam and Martin was inspired by Fred and Esther...LaWanda Page who plays Aunt Esther has appeared on Martin a time or two.
Sanford and Son was based on a British TV comedy, Steptoe and Son, which ran from 1962 to '65, then '70 to '74, and centered on a father-and-son junkyard business in London.
You need to watch the bit between Aunt Esther and Grady. He was Fred's friend and supposedly took over the house when Fred was out of town. However, Redd Foxx had a contract dispute and that's why they brought on the Grady character. In one episode, Esther called Grady a fish-eyed fool. Grady said, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me." And Esther said, "Well I'll get some sticks and stones and I'll break your bones and the name that hurts you will be Esther." HILARIOUS!!!!!!!
I love the fact that Red and Lawanda were really close friends in real life.

I watched this show when it came out. Loved it!!! One of the best shows ever.
I do enjoy watching your reactions to shows I grew up on...
I suddenly have an urge for Churches Chicken.
Sanford and Son is my favourite transfer of a British show to the US. The interplay between Fred and Esther was fabulous.
Redd & LaWanda were great friends in real life and he the writers create "Esther" for LaWanda, that's why they almost always had to take a second while doing their sparring as they would constantly make each other laugh or see who could make the other break character.
Now this is what I call. Good wholesome comedy
Omg! These were the best shows back in the day!
"And you remember when you look in the mirror tonight, the Lord gave you that face, and you STUCK with it. Ho Glory!" Gets a good laugh out of me every time. :)
Lob Rob. This show's a classic..remember watchin it as a kid back in the 70s.
Fred: "I know he'll like you, Ester. "Ester: "Why thank you, Fred." Fred: "Children always love animals."
😂😂😂
You know Woodro also played a drunk in Good Times. Fred specifically requested Esther for Sanford and Son
Fred: "And do you know there are two adults in my living room that nobody wants?"😂😂😂
You finally got the dream team of comedy fred and esta .. they were always gold on the show.... sucka 😅
I’m loving these. Man this takes me back. I truly believe this is why places like cali and New York have more diversity. We can laugh at our stupidity and come to see the wonderfulness in all of us as humans 😊
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! - Joe
Yea the verbal battle between Pam and Martin was inspired by Fred and Esther...LaWanda Page who plays Aunt Esther has appeared on Martin a time or two.
Oh really, wow did not know that , I love shanaynay and Pam not that hads anything to do with this topic I thought I wld do a side note
I LOVE your videos
I grew up watching these great shows 😂😂
Yes, there are A LOT more of Esther & Fred
I look forward to seeing them!!
Fred: "Goodbye deer!" Ester: "Oh, you called me dear?" Fred: "Why shouldn't I call you deer? You look like Bambi's father." 🦌😂😂😂
Fred says to Aunt Esther, “I could put your face in some dough and make gorilla cookies!” 😅
