Most people don't know that John and Olivia Walton had a deep love offscreen. They were truly in Love. Once Michael Learned(olivia) said what we saw on screen with them kissing or anything was real love. They tried to make a go of it but they didnt think it would work and hurt the show. Also Olivia was a Massive Alcoholic until 1977. Her and John would go to lunch on set and come back "tipsy" after a few glasses of wine. One day John told her she needed to cut down on her drinking and he was the one to help her. John, (Ralph) had a drinking problem too but nothing as bad as Olivia. This is in a book Michael Learned (olivia Walton wrote. She even took a bottle of whisky in her coat to audition for the role of Olivia... This was a huge surprise to me,...but not the love part. I saw some things kinda (off script) that they left in between them,..a bit too close at times but the alcohol surprised me. I loved them dearly together
Came here because the Decades channel is running a "Waltons" marathon this weekend. Watching the episode now (The Prize) with her ex-husband, Peter Donat. Was 16 when this aired in 1973. Such a contrast between the values of this show-depicting the values of the 1930's Depression era in a rural area and the social upheaval unfolding in suburban America.
God bless her..... You can see her new lenses from cataract surgery flashing from time to time (I have the same thing). Hate to see her, as America's mom growing older - it means we all are. I'll always love her.
She married my half-brother in 1979. He wrote an episode. I was at their wedding and had my first drink at twelve on the double-decker bus on the way to the reception.
Loved her in The Waltons and will forever remember her as Olivia Walton.
