    Wow, seeing Grandma and Grandpa Walton up on a stage excepting the Emmy Award is really something...
    They're both were very hard working and gentle spirits. You can see that in both candor.. Will Geer played in Eight is Enough as well at the same time as the he played in the Walton's.. If anyone has seen the Homecoming, before the series of the Walton's the Grandfather was played by someone totally different.. I am glad when they made the series that they picked Will Geer for the Grandfather.. He fit the part to a tee as well as Ellen Corby.. The Walton's series wasn't the same without the Grandfather Will Geer...

    These two were quintessential character actors who's credits are of astounding variety of genres in radio, stage, cinema and television. They worked in comedy, westerns, scifi, mysteries, melodrama, even classical roles and musicals in Geer's case. Most of us would never have bothered to look at the credits to find out who was playing that old curmudgeon, that gossipy neighbor, or that wily old fox, or that obstinate nurse. But character actors like these two, flesh out and enrich countless scenes and bring life to the most cliched dialogue. Never ever underestimate the veteran character actor. More often than not, they are putting in the best performances in any production! The least we can do to repay them, is wait for that credit listing, and find out who sparkled and stole the scene, if only for a half dozen lines.

    • @MrVidaeverdade
      @MrVidaeverdade 7 лет назад +7

      She was off the show for awhile after the stroke (a year maybe?), and then returned. I seem to recall, though, that she did not appear regularly if at all in the final years, although she did appear in at least one of those Walton reunion movies in the '90s. I think she was there for the last Waltons movie they made.

    • @mthivier
      @mthivier 7 лет назад +6

      She returned for the final episode of the 1977-78 season (it would turn out to be Will Geer''s last episode), and then was billed as a regular during the following season (though only appeared in maybe half the season's episodes), then dropping to recurring for the final couple of seasons. She was actually in five of the six "Waltons" reunion movies during the1980s and '90s.

    • @kristabrewer9363
      @kristabrewer9363 6 лет назад +1

      I don't get that. If this show was based on real life; how come they didn't get another actor to play grandpa when Will Geer died? and if Ellen Corby had a stroke but the real Grandma was fine, why would they have dropped her to recurring?

      I like so many people MISSED her in her youth. After her stroke she was 66 but she looked 88. She hang around for the 1978 season of The Waltons. I didn't miss her during the last two seasons, but I heard she lived many years after that awful stroke, like about 20 more years I think. Why does God torture people with strokes? If not for Will Geer (the Grandfather married to Corby in the show) Corby would have died a horrible death on the floor in her own apartment. Will Geer noticed she wasn't at work and that was not like Ellen Corby so he went to her apartment and found her helpless on the floor after a stroke. If not for him she would have died there on her own apartment floor from a lack of water. A few weeks later in April 1978 Will Geer at the age of 76 couldn't breath normally and died of resp failure. It's strange how that kind of disorder can creep up on you and kill you so suddenly. He looked so healthy during the tapping of the shows in Jan, Feb and March 1978 He died in April 1978. I heard many friends and family was at his house and they were all singing songs like the songs Will liked like this is your land this land is my land etc. He died of resp failure. Seems like a horrible way to die. A little pill and he could have went to sleep and died without any horror. Doctor assisted suicide is finally available in Canada now.

      Yes she had a stroke on set and was out for a year and a half it was during the filming of a show by the name of The Ferris wheel and She came back in Grandma Comes Home which as it turned out was Will Geer's last performance

    Geer's white ensemble makes him look like Mark Twain's grandfather! Geer was one of many actors who faced the pernicious poison of the HUAC hunters in the 1950s. So glad he was recognized for his contribution to The Waltons. Ellen Corby had a long and distinguished career. Most remember her from " It's a Wonderful Life " when she asked, during the run on the bank, " Can I have seventeen fifty? "

    My favorite episode of Gomer Pyle was the 'Marine Bandit'. Ellen Corby and another actress played mother and daughter villains, who conned Gomer into unknowingly robbing liquor stores for them. It was hilarious.

    Ellen Corby played a tiny roll in "It's a wonderful Life" but in a sense it was a big one. When George Bailey was trying to save the "The Savings and Loan",
    the character Ellen Corby asks if she can have just 17.50 and George Bailey kisses her out of gratitude.

      Will Geer was bisexual. He was married, had a family, but later on began a relationship with another actor. (Can’t recall his name). Of course Hollywood kept it a secret, everyone knew.
