You can train them. I have a farm. One of my hens got eaten by a hawk or owl leaving behind a three week old chick. I brought it in the house until I trusted it to go outside. I found bugs every day, pointed to them and yelled here's one and he learned how to find bugs. He followed me around like a puppy. I was his mom. He would come to the storm door and holler. I opened the door and he came in. He ate, pooped on news papers, slept on his back in my lap with his wings spread way out, his head cocked to the side he snored up a storm. Very cute.

My Grandma raised day old chickens in the early 1900's before electricity. She cut strips of old flannelette and stapled it to the inside of a timber box which was tipped on its side so the strips hung from the "roof". They were packed fairly tightly together and almost touched the floor. She put straw on the floor and the chickens could come and go through the top of the box which had become the side when it was tipped over. (I'm not explaining myself very well at all :D) She raised many chickens this way and never lost very many at all. They used the flannel like mother's body to snuggle amongst and keep warm when they needed to but had the freedom to move away from that if they were getting too hot. No power necessary and they regulated their own temperature. It might be worth a try. xx

They def shouldnt be outside for the first 6 weeks until they have their feathers unless the temp is consistently above 75f
They will also be jumping out of that red bin within days lol. Make a top out of chicken wire.

I raised 6 chic from babies in the Mohave desert region. If you dont keep chic warm and dry you loose them. Once they grow up and you build them a nice protective coup!!!! They can keep themselves pretty warm. They will give you eggs every day of their 1st two years. Try a heating pad! That light will take a lot.

Perfect! Chicken's can be stressful if you let them but they are actually very easy, I now have over 100 hens, sell the organic eggs too. The only thing that I would suggest is don't skimp on shelter. Put a floor in it. Take it from me, after losing chicks to raccoon getting in and then soured straw from the rain, yep I only build with floor. My channel I think has two different builds. Check them out.

You need to build a chicken coop and I mean quick
My wife in Honduras also had the grand idea of buying the hen (mama) with 11 chicks she tried to build a chicken coop but couldn't finished it well the 11 chicks died
Now you can imagine I was pissed off because I'm in Los Angeles and I couldn't be there to build that chicken coop to make sure the chicks would have a chance to grow up safely but nope my wife just couldn't wait
So please build the chicken coop and do it quick

Those chicks are the cutest *EVER* but I swear the *best* part is how Lola is being with them!!! OMG Lola is something else. I swear, her maturity is so noticeable. I've been here with you all for a long time now and Lola was just a "baby" for so long. Over the past -ohhh- few weeks maybe I have been especially noticing how much more mature she looks and acts but this... holy moly ... she is truly _mothering_ something. She's completely precious. The next cutest is Kaylee. Kaylee, you are *darling* with the babies. They are going to be so loved and bring you so much joy all while beautifully contributing to the farm.

I just hope you really do your research about raising chickens before jumping in. The whole “aren’t we so boho and kooky” and “let’s just fly by the seat of our pants” vibe is cute and all, but these are living things and if you have a “gee, who knew they need supplemental heat until they’re fully feathered” moment, birds die. Please, please do your homework. Try www.hencam.com. And get them a heat lamp ASAP. Why do I feel like this is not going to end well....

    • @chevy9748
      @chevy9748 4 года назад +3

Tracy because they’re plants where a living thing too and they let those die and they just say “oh well” and goes and gets more... they’ll probably do the same thing with the chicks and it makes me really sad to think of that! I hope all 4 live and have a beautiful life. Lately it seems like they have been very spontaneous on the things they want to do rather then indulging into the internet and learning the ins and outs of certain things. They said it themselves they only where up last night researching how to raise chickens... one day won’t teach you everything! Seems like now that they have money their lack of care has gone down.

Enjoy your birds! We have had dozens over the years, and when they are that size, you will really need them protected. Don't put them out. Start building a bombproof coop, and once they start really driving you nuts, they may be big enough to stay there. And don't worry too much about them being cold. It is the heat that stresses birds. Obviously, they can't freeze, but they can take 45-50 degrees. They will huddle. If this all works out for you guys, you will have 5x that many by next year! And thank you guys for being the last of the "van life" crew to stay the course and developing your channel. Everyone else seems to have beat feet to the states, and they will regret it.

I run a chicken and duck laying operation, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need any help. Chicks are great but nothing beats ducklings, when they hatch and look at you and then follow you around. We have a 20lb Muscovy that thinks he’s a dog and follows my wife around. Jonathan@hapa.farm . Our German Shepherd and Formosan Mountain Dog (and tortie cat) are very protective of our flock, our GSD will break into one of our flocks and sleep with the ducks :)
For the heat lamp, we just use a 60 watt bulb for our chicks.

You have to watch about putting the chickens inside the green house because they may get to hot and that could kill the chickens. Just like someone going to town and leave their dog in the car to long and the dog get to hot and dies. The same can happen to the chickens.

Great video oh, thanks for being real expressing your concerns. I had a lot of problems in the past with layoffs, getting fired, injuries and of course alcohol drugs and homelessness. Have adjusted to what you're doing several times and a common denominator is that every single vehicle I would buy wouldn't have adequate tire changing tools. When you rise to the level of depending on a vehicle like you are, not that you did anything wrong but sticking with stock is wrong for you. Now that I'm preparing for the van life again on purpose this time, I have two lists, goals and incidentals. When you notice an issue you don't resolve it, you get a quick fix like getting help with a jack and then you go on driving with the same tools that you had before. Beep! That's not doing anything wrong, that's not knowing how important the incidental list is. For example, now you're current list for the near future should read, bottle or floor hydraulic jack for the truck, T handle instead of tire iron. Straps to hold down the water tank when it's empty, cuz that will happen again before the plants grow tall enough to be a Wind Block. When you're in a house and the air conditioning didn't work, didn't you call the guy or did you just open the windows and fan yourself a little and say well it won't be that hot during the summer anymore? No, you called the guy! People that have jobs and run into a dead end on the job, don't they report the problem (writing it down on an incidental list) in hopes of resolving it for the future. Well you reported the problem but a Jack and T iron isn't going to fall from the sky oh, well maybe for you guys it will but you understand where I'm coming from. Your parents were spot-on but over critical so they missed the mark. It's not called doing it wrong unless you don't write it on your incidental list, what you are doing is learning things the hard way and there's a way to combat the stress from that by starting an incidental list, a what? Yeah, I'm getting a little bitter with you two today because I have a low tolerance when people make a mistake and just move on. Pretty soon youl have too many things to complain about to make any decisions right. Please don't let the world stack up on you, I don't want to watch that. How do we do it differently or how can we do it better to get it right the first time, it's probably a question you guys have a lot, you're very thorough and meticulous, but it's common human behavior, we can't help ourselves to fix a problem and move on instead of a long-term change. Here's something else we deal with, if you do realize how important it is to buy a new strap and Jack, you may say all right, we'll get that soon. You guys know as well as I do that soon or what you put off for tomorrow is probably gone. I have two weeks before I'm on four wheels again and already have a new Jack from AutoZone and that t-bar thing behind my seat. I'm polish, I shouldn't be smart enough to know I need that but it doesn't come from smarts, it's experience. A tip you may already know about, but I'm going to tell you anyway just because I'm bitter. Don't forget to retorque those lugs in one week. what wait what did you say? You did retorque them after the tire was set on the ground, good. Just take my word for it torque them again in a week. I guess I'm being a hard-ass about this, it's because you guys might be guiding my future in 2027 when I leave the country!

I've been keeping about 200 pastured hens for a decade in Los Angeles. I provide eggs for a farm-to-table bakery/café (which I hope makes it through this pandemic) -- as well as providing eggs to my neighbors. Anyway, if you have any poultry questions I might be able help with, please let me know.

If you buy a low wattage energy saver bulb, wrap it in a piece of fire-proof fabric, and lay it in the container, the chicks will feel the warmth and huddle around it. I just mention it because I fear that keeping them under constant lighting may not be good for them.
Also, it's the plastic container that will get cold during the night, if you use an old towel or sheet to line the bottom and sides container it'll be heaps nicer for them.

I've actually got two isa-brown chicks at the moment too. Also I've got 3 adult hens. They're prolific layers.. 1 egg a day per hen for around 1000 days or 3 years. They're amazing creatures and nice pets with their own personalities!

You need 3 or 4 deep cell batteries, you can probably use the one that's on the bus. An automotive alternator, you probably have one on the bus, a washing machine motor, and a fan belt, you probably have one on the bus motor. Connect the batteries in line with the alternator, use the washing machine motor, with a ⏲️ timer, to turn the alternator and keep the batteries fully charged. Connect an electrical outlet to the batteries for electricity. It's a very quiet source of energy, and the washing machine motor will run off the batteries once they're fully charged.

I don’t know much about raising chickens. I do know that a dog ate ours the first time we tried. Also, look into a plate heater instead of a heat lamp. It’s much more efficient. Checkout wild wonderful off grid.

Suggestion, I see what you are trying to do with tilting your panels, but you should consider tilting them the other way. (i.e. make an "A" frame rather than a "V" frame. This will work the same way, it will just be less of a wind sail and it wont direct/channel leaves and sticks into the middle.

I have had chickens before and they are so cute and fun and fuzzy! You'll hopefully see eggs within 2-4 months, depending. If any end up being roosters that could be helpful if you want an alarm clock, or more babies. Sometimes sexing the little pufflings can be difficult. Also be very careful against Hawks and wild cats (a roof is important). Also once they get big enough make sure their nesting boxes are warm and dark. One last piece of advice: my dog was never good with chickens but he only was exposed to adult hens, maybe Lola will be better. One last thing: chickens love scraps of food, I always fed mine pieces of vegetables, like tops of peppers and sometimes chips or lettuce. Also calcium is good to mix in every once in a while. Good luck!

compost with chicken poop is excellent. Don't use it straight because it is very "hot" and will kill plants. A fact is chickens can recognize up to 75 different people's faces. Keep them inside for a while because you don't have protection against predators is the main reason. Most chicks are kept in a very safe area inside a barn or a secure chicken coop with adult chicken to protect them. Wait a few weeks, they grow fast then build a chicken coop for them. Are you going to be putting up the rain collecting panels again now that the rainy season is coming?

also, since your bus is stationary, you might want to consider a rack to hold your solar panels that you can tilt to maximize collection of energy. Even if it was set on a timer to move close to tracking the sun position it would help.

Chicks also need grit to help with digestion. They need to be kept in 90 deg until they feather. You might be able to keep them warm enough with a heat pad that would use less electricity.

You should be prepping for the long haul ! By growing lots of food ! Instead of making sure the little chickens are all comfy ! If they can't stay warm on there own in a box inside the van. You should of never purchased them till they could stay outside on there own ! Your in the tropic's, not Alaska !

Hi u guys, when I first moved on some property in California, I was excited to go buy a few baby chicks. I was told there was a shipment coming in and to come at such time. I got there and the shipment of 200 chicks came in at the same time. I couldn’t make up my mind, so I bought all of them! 🤪 when my hubby came home from work could only say...* What did you do Lucy??? I ended up with a successful egg business for a few years...*Chicken Lips Egg Inc*, lol...Enjoy! 😘❤️❤️❤️

Build a secure lid for that box, made out of screen or chicken wire, to keep Lola and other predators out!! Losing a chick to a hungry hawk or animal can happen so fast...before you can react or save the chick. A screened lid will prevent anything like that from happening.
I agree about building a chicken coop ASAP. Include an outdoor "run" that is wired in (like a screened porch) for them to get sunlight.
The chicks will grow up very fast, you'll see. If you have a rooster, are you ready for early morning "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo's" EVERY SINGLE MORNING?? Love your videos!
