Read each seed packet. Sees like to be at different depths. Then cover lightly with soil. Then water in. Once they start germanating, stick your finger into the dirt about an inch. If it feels wet, you don't need to water. So check your soil daily. Not a fan of cilantro either, Kaylee. Loved the look of that burnt wood. That sunset is the best I've ever seen.

Hey there!! Just want you to know that the plastic you added as a liner will add BPA to your vegetation, especially in such a shallow depth like that container box. (BPA IS HIGHLY TOXIC).
It would be much SAFER to go get some cardboard boxes and with the 'ink' facing out, line it with the uninked side that will hold the dirt.
Be real careful adding any plastic to a garden you plan to eat out of.

Tip: take the time to make what you build aesthetically pleasing as well as just functional. You’ll be glad you did months or years from now. Too many homesteaders end up with a piece of land dotted with piles of junk, buildings slammed together with no cohesion in design and it will always feel very temporary and unfinished. Building your infrastructure is the most important part of homesteading and any experienced homesteader will tell you they built many things “good enough for now” with plans to go back and “do it properly” later. And later never comes. Do you really want to be looking at a giant black plastic water tank? Or a concrete block pump house with exposed pvc piping? Another tip is to map out your entire homestead now (you may have already done this) so you can visualize the entire compound now. Ugly may be functional, but you will not find it pleasing down the road. Do it right once, and make it beautiful and cohesive- whatever those words mean to you.

Very good tip. Another tip from living in Panama: don’t use wood unless it’s teak. And if you use teak, don’t let it touch soil and shield it from water. Concrete is your friend. That base you built out of metal will be a headache in 6-10 years.

The length of hose you have in the pile is only going to give you 4 gallons of hot water (assuming that the entire 100' length of hose is in the hot compost pile, and the pile heats up enough). For any showers more than 4 gallons, the cold water is going to go through the hose too quickly to warm up. You essentially need a bigger reservoir of hot or warm water to start. Check out the Life Uncontained channel for a recent video of theirs how they're using an off-grid hot-water heater.

When we backpacked, my husband hates cold water. So he heated up a tea kettle of water. Then he would wet down with cold and soap up. Then rinse off with the warm water. It made it so he could stand it. You could use a large pot and boil some then add your cold so it is still nice and warm. Looking good. We raised chickens when we had our farm. Then only animal we did not ever have was sheep. We loved it. Miked goats and cows, made cheese and butter. Don’t listen to the people who criticize you. Just learn all you can and do the best you can with what you are able to get. Be safe be well may god bless your endeavors.

So cool! For my van, I used hard pinewood tongue and groove boards for my ceiling and I torched them then used a white wash that I rubbed in with a cloth, and it’s probably my favorite part of my van. The white wash brings out the brightness of the parts that aren’t as torched and makes the contrast in the grain of the wood much brighter.

Burned wood is fine in places where it won’t get wet. For outdoor use in panama, use teak without anything on it. The natural resin will protect it from the termites. Use concrete posts and put teak on top, so the wood doesn’t contact the soil. Metal posts work too, but they’ll rust and need to be replaced at some point.

I'm always cool with whatever you guys do - as you say this is a fun learning experience for you guys. Not my place to judge and maybe I'll learn something, too, but... baby chicks are live animals. You can't mess this one up. You can't let them die or redo it with them, that would just be cruel. And I'm not here for cruelty. Hoping the next video sorts out the plans for them. Take care.

Ditto on the coil of black pipe to heat water. You can use black poly pipe 100' coil. Lay it in the sun and it makes super hot water when the sun is shining. So hot you'd have to mix it with cold. It cools when the sun goes down so you'd have to time your showers. Cheaper than copper!

I hope that works although I do worry how you’re going to be able to get to your pump if you need to. What I enjoy about watching is that you’re not afraid to try things and ask for help. If something fails then you brush yourself off and try again. The rude comments are not necessary from some of these people on this thread. It’s good to be helpful but no reason for people to be rude. At least you’re out there living your dream 💕

Hi guys. Someone probably already told you this tip, and i dont know the air temp where you are but, can you rope a long section of black tubing or your hose if thats all you have, up top of your upper water tank, then let it heat up during a sunny day? Shower time before temps start to drop. We did this in VT when we didnt have a shower. I can give you more details if you want! Love what youre doing! Ps coriander is cilantro😉

In the summertime we use to get scalded with a hose that laid out in the sun. So, if you bucket that first amount of warm water coming out of a hose left in the sun, then maybe use it to wash up, and only take a cold rinse. OR run around and get all sweaty and you will love the cold water. OR get a big tub with a drain, fill it with boiling water and cold hose water mix and take a bath outside in that sunset. WOW!! In the olden days they would fill up a tub with water every Sat night and Dad would get the first wash and then mom, then kids with the same water then baby was last to wash. This is why they said, "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater." lol

Neat idea for planter box. Not sure if 2” is enough. Or if your spacing will be adequate. Cilantro can get tall. Good for starting the plants & move elsewhere later. Consider cute planter boxes under windows of bus (w/ same wood concept) for easy access. Keep at it guys. You’re doing great!👍

Love the shou-Sugi-ban look. Can you make a lattice on the side and then grown food down the side? IF it becomes an issue, any chance of jut raising the box a bit up onto a platform (or even incline it a bit) for ready access to water pumps? Gooorgeous sunset! Love how much fun you guys are having as you LIVE you life as oppose to just surviving/existing. What a great place to “shelter in place”. 👩🏻‍🌾 👨‍🌾

Bad idea placing a garden on your pump house, the plastic was stapled down, that means it will leak, now you got a dirty mess inside the house, atleast make sure your electrical in the house is water tight or you will have more problems and possibly burn down your bus,a breaker or inline fuse is a must.. Happy planting
