      I have done this before.....if you dig a trench in the ghse, you can walk through it, and reach all the parts of it.....of course, making it higher may have been better.

    • @d.e303-anewlowcosthomebuil7
      @d.e303-anewlowcosthomebuil7 4 года назад

      In the future, a pit with black plastic in it, and a simple brush/plastic roof if even needed, will make an adequate water tank. A good water filter for your drinking water is a requisite anyway.

I think if you study foam cement, aircrete on you tube for a while, you will find something that will be very useful to the panamanians.......I have a good way to make stained glass effect art with greeenhouse plastic, btw....Yes, I am an inventor and an artist, and i do hope you have fun down there but i am staying here......good luck to you.

    Guys priority is everything ! Your doing fine Wish I could send photos of my year building my off grid organic farm in Peru. We did provisional buildings first so we could start food production. We started building our Permanent stone barn last week for the donkeys and alpacas. It alot of work but so satisfying in the end. The locals are blown away because here everything is in rows. We have raised bed gardens in the shape of flowers. We also companion plant, square ft garden, And its incredibily beautiful and productive. Next is the green house then my stone cottage castle. Yup why not? Im 66 and still want to live in a castle but it will only be 200 sq ft lol. Keep up the good work. You will see your dreams come true

    G’day from Australia, you guys did a great job but if l may offer you a little advice. You need to run battens aroundthe outer edges on top of the poly carbonate. The wind is going to catch the edges and rip it off in pieces. Also you need to get roofing screws. They have a rubber washer that sits between the screw and roofing material. And when you screw them in you screw into the ridge. Just trying to give a little helpful advice. Wishing you all the best

    I just commented this to someone else who´s doing rainwater catchment. Try to never mix city water and rain water in the same tank because somehow the mix causes algae to grow. So if you would sometimes have to carry city water to your land, keep it separate

    "at the end of the day we're just two people playing around in the dirt" ... It's glorious to experience such a thing. At the same time I learned the hard lesson that it's generally not a good idea to reinvent the wheel again and again and again.
    By way of example, I cringed watching you at the beginning of this video burying untreated soft woods in the dirt. In at most a couple of years they will be rotted and the structure you are building will fall over and have to be rebuilt. There's a reason people put structures on blocks above the wet dirt.
    Build this wonderful paradise, but do your homework/research before picking up spade, hammer and saw, to make sure your building strategies are appropriate to the environment.

    Pythagoras doesn’t lie! The best way to use it is to work with a triangle that has 1 leg of 3 units and the second leg of 4 units. The diagonal will be 5 units (3x3)+(4x4)=25. The sq. Root of 25 is 5. Multiples work also. If your structure is to be 20’x 30’ pound a stake (A) where you want your 1st corner and attach 1 string 30’ long and a 2nd string 40’ long and lay them out roughly where you want your structure. Now take a string 50’ long and stretch it between the ends of strings 1&2 making all 3 string tight and you will have a square corner. Pound stakes to secure the lines (X&Y). Measure from the square corner 30’ along one string and pound a stake (B). Measure 20’ along the 2nd string and pound a stake (C). Measure 20’ from stake B and 30’ from stake C and pound a stake (D) where they meet. You should now have an outline of a 20’x30’ structure. As a final check before building measure the diagonals; A to D should equal B to C.
    I would be happy to help you with your drawings if you like. Email bikeitlist@shaw.ca

    Hey glad you found you some land. Thought I would give you a couple of tips. If you are using 2 x 4 for your rafters turn them up on edge they will be a lot stouter it won't take very long spaning the distance you have they will bow down laying flat. Also I would suggest putting your rain roof closer and making it taller so you can put a first flush system on. That will keep things from being washed into your tanks like bugs and bird poop. It will be a lot of hard work, but it will be worth it.

    Love the spirit and courage with you guys! Some questions & suggestions...
    Did you ever consider just digging out a shallow slopped PVC lined ground pond with a solar pump and filter instead?
    Why build a low rain collection a few feet from the ground and not just build a functional structure with the same footprint high enough that you use to store supplies, tools and maybe in a pinch camp under, you can even store a water tank right under it and save on having to run pipes through your land.
    The tanks are going to take a beating from the sun.. maybe you should have only bought one tank for now and just had it filled since you won't be needing that much water for the two of you while you only visit to build.
    I think you need rubber washers on that corrugated plastic .. but at $40 a sheet, I would have actually been tempted to build the roof out of solar panels and used plastic inserts and silicone to make it watertight.
    With enough water, power and basic shelter on site, you will save a lot of time and money by not having to constantly go up and down the mountain. BTW, do you feel safe there at night? Feel your stuff will disappear?

    I always enjoy watching the adventures of the nomadic movement. You two (& Lola) have great positive attitudes.
    Never heard of a rain roof before. Wouldn't a piece of plastic on the sloped ground accomplish the same thing? Why have it so far from your tanks? Doesn't the rain fall over there too?🤔
    I've watched a lot of DIY cabin, yurt, and tiny house builds on RUclips. Many people go straight into building the main structure, as if all they need is a roof over their heads. Then, after it's too late, they realize that there's no internal water fixtures, drains, toilet, shower/bath, kitchen sink, electrical outlets, refrigeration, microwave, cooking stove, etc. It's really difficult to install underground utilities underneath an existing structure. Anyone for an outhouse, river bathing, and campfire meals?🙄

    The screws through your corrugated plastic are supposed to go through the peak of the ribs, not the valleys. Also they're not supposed to be cinched all the way down and should use rubber washers under the heads of the screws. I have used silicone caulk instead of the rubber washers, and that worked too, but a lot more hassle. If you find that it leaks, you can flip the sheets over and then the screw holes will be at the peak.

I like to do a job once, I would have paid a guy to weld up aluminum studs as I can almost guarantee that would is going to rot and fairly quickly. The other consideration is the wind which will be picking up in the coming weeks. Couldn't tell if you were using the screws designed for metal roofing that has a gasket around it. I personally would over engineer the roof, extra cross beams and a ton of screws :) And, if you make it down this way please reach out to have a coffee! Have fun!

    You're doing a great job out there! Love it that you're trying to learn and do everything yourselves. Keep on doing it!
    Can I give you one piece of advice? I saw you screwing the rain roof to the framework in the lower gutters. Yes, it's the strongest. But it's also the place where most of the water will flow through. So you increase your chances of it leaking through. Nothing to worry with this setup, put I would advise otherwise when building the houses. Here in The Netherlands I believe we always screw such panels on the upper curves so water doesn't run past it. Use special longer screws with a rubber grommet and it will seal perfectly. Good luck and keep up the good work and great spirits!
    Tobias

    • @Klynder1

      Yup, screws are definitely meant to go on the tops like you say, and it should be the proper roofing screws you describe. I was also wondering about that "side slope" they built in, it won't have any effect, since water will flow straight down along the curves of the roof. :)

    Not sure how the lay of the land is, however, if you can get your water tanks above your housing structures high enough, you will not need electric to feed water to those structures. A buddy of ours had 4500 gal of water storage, that was about 100 feet higher than his house. The water pressure inside the house was great. Without knowing how it worked, you would have thought there was an electric water pump in the system. Gravity will do the job if you can work with it! Depending on the height difference, 30 lbs, or more, is easily obtainable.

    • @evelynlarkins4851
      @evelynlarkins4851 4 года назад

      Sapphireduo 02,
      1 psi (of water pressure) = 2.31 feet (of head pressure).
      It means, roughly, that for every 2 1/3 feet that the water storage tanks are elevated, above the level where the water is to be used, 1 pound of pressure is gained. That is why water towers are high in the air or on top of buildings.
      However, having a long downward slope, with a smaller pipe and water fixture at the end of the slope, can raise the pressure enough to be useable. Illustrated by "Offgrid With Doug and Stacy" on RUclips. Their main water system comes from their barn roof, into (a 100gal first flush container) then into 2 - 1,500gal storage containers. The water flows, on demand, through a 2-inch pipe, to their house and other buildings. The storage tanks' bottoms are only about 10-feet above the level of the kitchen faucet (10 feet of head), however the sloped distance is easily 1/2 mile. Then they have a small-bore water faucet in the kitchen. This arrangement generates full water pressure in the kitchen. As Doug says: "No pumps; no problems."
      You could check out their RUclips channel and e-mail them for more info. They have been living off-grid in Missouri for over 8 years. Doug has constructed all their buildings using simple tools (except the barn), and has lots of "how-to" videos.

    One of the things I would build on that property is an elevated cabana with a roof. It would be a great place to relax and enjoy the view. It could also be a good place to mount wireless antennae for internet and mobile and collect water. Below the elevated deck you could store your tractor and gardening gear. Hang hammocks 15 feet up in the shade. Add a coffee and wine bar up there too. Build your shed with 4 telephone poles in the corners sunk into cement as the start of an elevated cabana...?

    Great job on the water collection! You can use that same type of foundation frame for solar panels for power. Also consider wind power as an added benefit. Being on a mountain you are in the perfect place for wind power to make up for cloudy days! Then add a battery bank shed. Keep Going! You are doing great!

    DOH! It seems counter intuitive but if you had screwed the corrugated roofing on at the top of the roll (only enough to keep it secure not tighten it down flush) instead of at the bottom where it actually touches the wood, it won't leak and also won't rot the wood so quickly.. Maybe next time. :)

    One gallon of water weighs 8.8lbs. You need to place the water tanks on reinforced concrete! Don't make the mistake on placing them on anything else unless you want to replace then every year. Also, recommend a leaning roof ro protect from sun.

  • @josealorenzo5
    @josealorenzo5 4 года назад

    Remember to put a gutter in the lower part to divert the water to a corner. Remember that the roof is undulating. Tilting the roof will not solve the water direction.

      Roy Howdyshell we live on an island on the Caribbean side of Panama, and rely solely on our rain catchment off of the roof. We have two 1100 liter tanks, and have no problem with the amount of water collected. We use a large particulate filter, followed by a carbon filter, and finally an infrared filter that zaps all contamination out of water. They are going to be fine with the volume of water that will be collected for now, and can always add additional tanks as needed.

    Funny story; I was calling to cancel my cell phone with a Canadian company (Koodo) and the customer service rep asked why. I told him because my wife and I were selling everything to move to Mexico. I said we had been following several RUclipsrs and were inspired to pull the plug early on our retirement (were in our 50's). The funny part; the call center was in El Slavador and he said he followed this couple 'the nomads or something' and I said The Nomadic Movement? And he said 'Yes, we love them here!'. 2 degrees of separation huh? Lol

    if you are going to start a construction make sure you make it out of cinder block is better for the weather conditions there, wood is not the best material for central america and block and concrete is cheap, again have a panamenian friend to find you a cheap albanil for about 5 dollars the square metro of construction, make you design thinking of sewer and water first there is plenty videos in youtube to start .
