I tried to start an intentional community at one point. Here is the advice I'd offer: 1. Vet people that you plan on having live with you thoroughly. Not just their criminal background (or hopefully lack of), but also talk with people that will vouch for them. I can't tell you the number of people that talk a good game, or even look really good for a week or two, and then it all goes downhill. Very few people want to work. They want the 'dream' but don't realize it takes work and won't do it. 2. Visit other eco-communities as ask what worked and what didn't. I toured several. They all had very similar problems to what I had. Nobody wants to work. Lots of drugs (and I'm not talking about weed). Lies, stealing, etc. 3. Buy and read 'Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities'. I've met the author and she knows what she is talking about; she's lived in an eco-community for years. TLDR: There are good people out there. But they are really hard to find and it's easy to get burned.

I would have the current owners dig the well. It would save you money in the long run. You don't have to use it, but it would be an available water source in the future. It would also help in selling the property later. I would not offer more money to buy the property. I am curious how you are going to vet people that are going to live with you long term and how you are going to deal with it if personalities don't work out.

@@vegahw actually if you listen to what they said you're wrong it would not save them money they counter-offered 25% lower instead of doing the 25% they wanted to dig a well so therefore they wouldn't have got the 25% off so in a way it wouldn't save them money if they got the deal for 25% off would know well it would save them money basically what he was trying to do is dig a well at the price point they had already offered I guess you could say it would be saving that money because they wouldn't have to dig the well but they don't really want a well so it kind of defeats their purpose

It's challenging enough living with (or next to) family and friends you've known a long time... but add on to that people cycling through... It sounds like a lot of stress. They're going to be spending a lot of time being landlords, basically. I can see the value of what they want to do but it sounds like too many people to deal with all the time. I hope I'm wrong and it works out. I do hope they're very selective in who they choose to stay with them, though. One bad apple in this situation will be a nightmare.

You should spend a year in Panama before you decide to build your dream. It's like buying a vehicle, you think you found a deal and then a better one comes along. That is not the only property. Off grid, no water, That would be be like a bad transmission. You get no where without spending more on that vehicle deal you bought. I did notice that this is very green and that alone indicates there is much water coming from somewhere. Wind sun all provide power at a cost. Using material available is a good idea. Much to humid to suit me. Find out about the snake population Ha Ha. That includes realtors.

Boquete gets over 3000mm(123 inches) of rain a year. Even in the dry season the dryest month is 70mm (2.75 inches) where it rains once a week. They might not even need too big of a cistern to store water, but it depends on how many people will use it.

It never hurts to have a well. For one thing, from experience, it is good to have a POSSIBLE high pressure water source and proper hoses and nozzles for a fire fighting tool should it happen. Rain water is good for most everything else but a standby pump with hoses for fire use can be a real saver.

Volcanos = earthquakes (small, medium, large) = build a strong home. Check with insurance companies to make sure that they will cover this type of Adobe home. Drill the well. Seriously. Remember the rain water falls on the soil, the soil naturally filters it and then the pump can bring it to each house. Life will be much easier then having “rain water catch” system. Keep your life simple. The more rain catch systems, the more solar power the more hassle when things break. And they will break, that’s life. You guys are really caught up in the emotional side of building this “community” property. You are not thinking realistically slow down and start thinking rationally vs emotionally. btw My parents have lived in their condo for 30 plus years. The first year they set up in the recreation room a “Wednesday night gathering” everyone brings a small plate of food to share i.e. cheese & crackers type snakes & bring their own drinks. This has been going on since they started. They know everyone. They are great friends with a large group. They even travel together. When you guys lived in the condo you chose not to connect with anyone. Now you realize life is more about connecting with people vs materialistic things you can by from your job you are starting this community property.

That’s a bummer about the fuel pump! Hope it all gets sorted out. About the water situation: I think you’d be best off having a well on the property at least as backup. Rain catchment systems can be tricky to get working right. Having a well on the property will give you that security you won’t have to haul water if your water storage tanks get filled with algae.

You guys are already water conservators, so should be a piece of cake! Just a note about using turbine power. I have heard stories (and seen on the news ) that the shaking on the ground can cause health problems with some people. Also the noise can be quite loud. A Mennonite lady I worked with said it decreased the milk production in cows. Animals like humans can be affected by the noise and the ground movement. So check this out before jumping into it. Good ideas, but know what you're getting into. From the worrywart mom.❤

I agree with Ravi. Get the owner to put in a well. With all the animals you want, gardens, a pool, and a community of people, you are going to need water and quite a bit of it. Trust me. I love your dream. As a kid, I was raised in the small town in Southern Idaho. Whenever anyone needed help with anything, people always helped. If someone was sick, people brought food and the local MD even went to people's houses. When people got old, everyone helped to take care of them so they could stay in their homes. I have been looking for a community like that for a long time. I am mostly lonely in cities and making friends is not that easy. Best of luck to you, and when you get this thing completed, maybe one day, I can come and stay and help out for awhile. I know about animals, planting and all that stuff cause I was raised on a farm. Love you guys. Best of luck to you.

If the universe is in on it, we may see you there someday, sooner than later. Anyway, congratulations on finding a place you can call home and become one with the land and nature. There is something primal and distinctly beautiful when alone in the wilderness, you can feel the vibration of the earth, as well as your own, and your place in it becomes clear.

You have to be mindful of water usage but that’s kind of the point anyway. If you go with a composting toilet you will automatically save so much water. Totally doable! I don't know how much more that well is going to cost you, but I can almost guarantee you that somewhere down the not to distant line you are going to wish you had gone ahead with that. There are so many many things you don't think about right away with water needs, but on a home stead, the water needs are going to be much larger than you are anticipating. A well is a perfectly respectable off grid way to get water. You should reconsider the well.

I have done cob building and it's very time consuming and labor intensive to build. Just make sure you add gluten to the cob mix and remember standard flour will not have enough gluten in it. Gluten makes things stick together. When you finish the inside walls use the finest sand you can find and screen the straw for a very fine wall finish. I will warn you they may not use flour for the glue but they may use cow manure as the glue. It has no smell dry. Best of luck on your new projects.

You gotta set up some swales and maybe do some small aquaponics setup if you can for food and fish with small water input.

It's all relative. So you're in a foreign country and you pay more for your mechanic then Juan Pablo down the street would. You're still paying way less then what you'd pay Billy Bob back home. Taint no big thing and you're helping the local economy.
Neither of us have seen the entire fuel line. But being a mechanic myself I can relate that typically the rust only effects the last little portion of the line right at the tank. Sure you can get all new metal lines made, or make them yourself for that matter, but for 6 to 12" of rusted metal it seems more practical to replace that little bit with flexible fuel hose for a couple of bucks and call it a day.

There is a period of 4 months where it does not rain at all (from January to April). Then during May till mid September it rains not so frequently. After that you have October, November and part of December where it rains almost every day. So take note of this and maybe having a water well would be a good idea.

  • @callingyouout3954
    @callingyouout3954 5 лет назад

Something to think about. Rain water collection is great and in a rainy climate may provide all the water that you need. BUT....here's the catch for you. You have a greenhouse in your plans. A green house is covered, so you actually have to water them, and that will take an absolutely huge amount of water on a continuous basis. Think carefully before you dismiss the well. You may turn out to need it for the greenhouse. Best wishes and best of luck.

@@richardware7293 You know what you are doing right? That is what anthropologists call cultural enforcement. When ever an individual or group holds values that a Culture considers fringe, members of that culture often discourage and devalue their ideas. Your comment about doing "real" work is a good example because as children we are encultured with the values of the people and society around us. Western and especially American society has embedded the idea that working 40 hours a week, and receiving two weeks vacation, even if we hate the job is virtuous. And you feel that they are disrespecting these cultural values and at the same time because they aren't working 40 hours a week at a job they hate they are actually devaluing your sacrifice so you are lashing out, like many do. I've been reading all the blogs and have been following you guys for a long time. What Lily said is true. I bought land in Thailand and am building a home and small community as well. We are building using teak wood which we had cut down ourselves and had it built by her dad and cheap labor. The well could be an huge issue as even though he digs doesn't mean there is water and well diggers won't guarantee water. UNLESS, of course you put the onus on the owner. No water no payment but I doubt they would do this. If they do build a well and hit water doesn't mean it won't dry out either. Now, I am a builder for commercial buildings and used to build houses. I have a friend who is in his 4th year of solar energy and he just told me today that China has developed solar panels that actually collect energy even on cloudy days. Look into it.
Regardless of what people write, follow your dreams and go for it. Yes, you'll make mistakes and your video says you are ready for it. You will only learn from it. If you don't try you won't learn. Falling is the BEST way to learn as you keep getting up.

Combined and coordinated effort of multiple people will reach much-higher targets, than the same effort of the same people individually. The "communal" side of a real community will allow a richer and healthier level of success to be achieved. The few truly communal, off-grid communities that I have personally been involved with were as close to a perfect environment, atmosphere and cultural spirit as you can get. The words "me" and "I" simply go away and one learns to think with the understanding that "we" and "us" better represents their mission in life.

As for windmills, I would buy car alternators so your windmills will always be putting out DC and charging your batteries. I think that would be the easiest way to make your power. The mills could be hand made at first and later on you could upgrade them. Or if they have an airfield junkyard, you might be able to salvage propellers but think about building them the old fashioned way first. I'm sure you can find a few people who weld and designs aren't hard to find.

Rivi has a point for the well idea. I don't know what your elevation is but here in the states where it gets freaking hot as hell, I suggest you find someone with a backhoe and have them dig the foundation about five foot below the surface so you have some of the nature thermal barrier. Your walls should be twenty-four inches thick so when it's hot outside, it's cool inside. If you can build into the side of a hill it'll be even better.

Community is great. USA used to have this type of living as I spent my youth in the tail end of it as women's lib and all the trends that followed took over. I loved having family so close and always there to help you out. Plus I grew up learning all the skills no one uses these days like growing a garden to feed you for a year, canning, butchering meat, fishing, sewing clothing, knitting, herbals, soap making, repurposing and macgyvering what you need. Had to when $$ was scarce. Now all the family I relied upon is elderly and many have passed. I always tell my husband that I wish to get the same set up so all my kids and their families can reside 'with' us and I can pass those skills onto my grandkids. Family (and friends) are what makes the world a better place.

I would not count on the $50 / truck ... if there was a drought that price would probably go up a lot! I have lived in 1 place a long time and I grow a garden each year and this year started off great and everything was green ... but we haven't had rain in 7 weeks now ... if i had no well all my crops would have dried up. And it may take you a while (more than 1 year) to get all the storage tanks you need setup. Just think about it ... :) Wishing You much success !!

Which when you think about it is more necessity here in America now with how crazy life gets and how stressful it can be, and then everyone is trying to do it on their own- Insane! Regarding wind power, I live in an area where individuals have wind turbines, please do your research; very expensive to maintain/repair and can actually become a hazard, they are also very loud like a plane propeller and will be heard not only by yourself but you will be polluting the air with noise which includes your neighbors around you. Many people who went with turbine are regrettable because of the above and have switched to solar. Good luck, your plan sounds amazing.
