Kaylee turn over the ground and get out as many roots and vegetation as possible then tarp it. You want to prevent anything from growing back and unwanted seeds to start growing. Grass is a real pain to keep out. Keep it tarped until you plant and then have lots of mulch ready or use the heavy duty landscape cloth. There are lots of pros and cons but find what works best for you. Start a mulch pipe with the cow page and other vegetation you cut down and in no time at all you will have wonderful compost. In that climate seeds can take hold very quickly so tarp is necessary and then vigilance. I'm a gardener so give a shout out if you have any questions.

Boquete is an amazingly beautiful area with equally amazing people! We have had the opportunity to travel to many Latin American countries over the years and Panama is one of our favorite trips by far. You picked one primo spot to lay down roots! We'll definitely be back soon!

Instead of clearing the land cut the grass down super short over and over until you are ready to plant the seedlings. It will protect your top soil from washing/blowing away.
Keep your short patch larger than what you need but only "clear" the rows you need for the plants and cover the roots with plastic and your pile of dead grass from all your cuttings to keep the rows clear.
It will save you back breaking effort and preserve your soil.

  • @LivingtheSmallTownLife

Kaylee, to clear pasture and prepare for planting, you should use a tarp on the field for a week or two. That will kill the grass and save you a lot time clearing. You can google market garden silage tarp to get ideas.

In the states you can rent a “sod” removal machine (about the side of a lawnmower) to remove the grass. Very quickly, worth the money. Bet, you can find this machine where you are at too at a local garden center/home depot/etc. There are videos on you tube for these. I would recommend you guys really map out your plot of land with your ideas of buildings, walk ways & land scape. Seems like you might not be planning it out properly with regards to where the sun hits the land & what shade plants should be at & where the garden will grow best. You can always talk to local garden center owners for really good advise on where to put your garden. Even interviewing them on camera (to give them free advertisement).

Kaylee (I apologize if I misspelled your name) stop breaking your back digging up that ground. If you want to plant now then continue but if you don't mind waiting a few months to plant there's a better way to do it. Get some hay and lay it down in the area where you plan to put your garden. Make sure to have at least 6 inches deep of hay and then if you want to put a tarp over it to make sure that the sunlight does not get through to the ground to allow anything to grow but I've never used a tarp. After a few months the ground under the hay should be nice and soft and super easy to dig into. Just spread the hay apart where you want to put your hole to plant your seed and plant it. If you keep hey laid down in between your crops it will help to cut down greatly on the weeds and it also helps to retrain moisture so you will not have to water your crops as often.

You can buy a bundle of cardboard boxes in David for about $12. Put
them on your garden to block weeds and plant through holes in the
cardboard. You can cover the cardboard with rice hulls that you can
get free from Tia Maria. You will build up the soil and reduce your work.

For the gardening I recommend double digging raised beds. It's a bitch to do, but you never walk on them, so they stay soft. They're also much more productive per sq. Ft. than traditional row gardens. They terrace well and will help with avoiding wash outs. Get the book The New Self Sufficient Gardener, by John Seymour. Get your soil tested to understand what amendments may be needed for each crop you're interested in growing. Their university system may have a soil testing service? That book is truly excellent! Plant lots of perennial veggies like asparagus which will feed you year after year with minimal tending.

You'll be speaking fluent Spanish in no time. May I recommend the "Pimsleur Method" to give you a head start. Locals always appreciate when you make an effort. But if you learn it well, you'll have more negotiating power too. Panama is classically about negotiation.
Also, try making cashew fruit ice cream. Make sure to wash the cashews and whatever you do, do NOT, I repeat, do NOT eat the cashew nuts unless you know exactly what you're doing. You can eat the cashew fruits (after they're washed), make ice cream with them, juices, or make sweets. But when it comes to the nuts, too many an American has had to be rushed to the hospital for eating under-cooked cashew nuts and have their stomachs pumped out. The roasting process gets rid of the oils from the cashew nut shell. These oils are so poisonous that one can use them as insecticide. So, it is totally totally necessary to learn from a local thoroughly on how to roast cashew nuts. Now, once you've done that, you can then go ahead and add chunks of cashew nuts to your cashew ice-cream. Again, hear I am writing to share with you tidbits about Panama so that you don't learn through the school of hard knocks. Important to learn some things from the locals. Both you and the locals can learn from each other. That's what Panama is all about. This is what enriches Panama. It's a cornucopia of races, ethnicities and cultures. Unlike in the United States, nobody in Panama expects you to assimilate into a Panamanian culture. And that is because Panama is all about integration, not assimilation. Again, that's what enriches Panama and makes it what it is. -just don't build A-frame houses or houses out of wood. We'll forgive you for your bus-house and smile at your cute eccentricity. But a wood house ... well, you already know our position on that. 😂 Welcome to Panama. Glad you're enjoying it. And regarding your motorcycle, as a Panamanian, I empathize with your plight of registering your vehicle. But this is not just vehicle registration. This sluggishness is with _any_ Panamanian government institution. The concept of time is very elastic. As such, to become a government employee one must first pass boot-camp at the Motor Vehicle Department. That is where everyone is trained to become a sloth. After that, the sky is the limit. We've even once had a president referred to as "The Big Turtle". //I say part of this is kidding, the other part of this is true. lol

Word to the wise: Never sleep under a jack-fruit, bread-fruit or coconut tree. If a fruit falls from a tree it can kill you! lol My grandpa had a giant dent on the hood of his car for the greater part of a year because he parked it under a jackfruit tree. 😂

Look up lasagna gardening, it's a lot less work. No weeding. Make the garden really small, with a really strong fence, with those cows around. With like stock panels. Then with a mesh roof too if you have dear. Also probably put it farther away from the cows or they'll be going through their fence constantly.

I would spray the bus frame in a phosphoric acid based rust converter like Krud Kutter or Ospho. Then a couple of thick coats of tractor paint. That should give you extra time before the frame rots too much for use. I have been doing this to our rusty Pennsylvania bus as I convert it with great results. Use a respirator and eye and skin protection with the acid. It chemically converts the rust to a different material.

@@teknav1 Most acids will etch metal whether they cause rust or remove it. Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is one type of acid which removes rust by converting it (iron III oxide) to a form which can be dissolved in water. Most other strong acids cause rust. Ospho and Krud Kutter both contain phosphoric acid. I'm not sure of the molarity, but I'm sure it's on the mild side. Regardless, the rusty metal turns black with a water soluble white film that one can spray off, dry, and then paint to protect the surface. Check those products and you'll see. They're effective. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.rustoleum.com/~/media/DigitalEncyclopedia/Documents/RustoleumUSA/TDS/English/CBG/Krud%2520Kutter/KRK-02_The_Must_for_Rust_TDS.ashx&ved=2ahUKEwjIuZyclqDnAhXBW80KHSIBCBQQFjABegQIAxAI&usg=AOvVaw2G57kOGjlnDonudBpT06Rn
