I used to love open world games and especially the early Assassins Creed games. My gamer OCD made me want to clear every side mission and collectible back in the day until Assassins Creed Unity broke me. I'd put dozens of hours in but the level of map clutter and repetitive busy work I had left was unbelievable so I just gave up. I've tried many open world games since but I rarely get to the end of the story these days let alone anywhere close to 100%ing them. I'd much rather play a more linear 8-12 hour game with well paced enjoyable gameplay and good story than a 40-80 hour grind fest.

Jin just accepts this like a cucked Redditor. Also, she's an old grandma who easily challenges Jin to a duel and he just immediately trusts and accepts her back afterwards The game's story is full of dumb shit like this. Overall I still liked it for the combat and stealth loop, though
Her family was slaughtered infront of her, ofcourse she's gonna have some raw feelings about that. And her loyalty is to her grandkids and children, she stayed with her husband because leaving him for a woman would not be seen well.
Interestingly enough, the samurai of that Mongol invasion time period didn't have the kind of honour system that is usually portrayed in popular culture. That system is largely something that developed in times of extended peace where you had to teach your fighting capable males in society some appeasing code of self-restraint and self-sacrifice, to keep the peace.
@@golDroger88 You mean the bushido honour code samurai depiction in popular culture? From what I've read/heard (Stephen Turnbull), most of the honour code we hear about today comes from a time period (around 1800?) and it's mostly about keeping the males in society in check. Part of what is also happening in the West at large, basically teaching and training men to be simps, to lower the threat of social unrest.
As someone who just got a PS5 years later I just played this for the first time. I felt it was a really good open world experience. Combat feels fairly easy even on hard mode but it’s SATISFYING AF. It’s so fluid and even as a slightly older game it’s absolutely stunning on the PS5. The side content isn’t mind blowing but I like the evolving stories of all the side characters it’s a cool way to handle side quests. The map is dense and lots to do without feeling overwhelming. Story is mature even tho somewhat predictable and average but has a good tone to it. It’s worth a shot if you like open world games
Play it on lethal then and with paddles left dodge and right staggering. This reviewer don't know what he is talking about best gameplay experience in my life awesome story Lady Masako is fucking bad ass
You could have looked up the photos of the Japanese voice actresses and compare them to the video game model. Chances are they would be prettier than the computer models.
Lol I know right? Especially mgs 1 and mgs 4. I like mgs 4 but that game was just stacked with cutscenes and dialouge. Mgs 1 however was pretty bland and god awful. The tutorial took forever and all I heard was this one complete idiot who says nothing but “yes boss! Get up boss! Boss!” I really hate that. Also you’re right, this guy is such a total boomer. A game released in the 1980s or 1990s gets a free pass for being loaded with nothing but cutscenes and dialouge, but a 2020 game isn’t. Boomer logic at its finest.
@@acehood9953 I'd disagree just because metal gear cutscenes are common and so goddamn long they could take up the runtime of an entire game, straight up made and ate dinner during one and the cutscene still wasn't over
I’ll take MGS cutscenes over another walk and talk segment that forces me to stare at the backs of character while they talk. It’s lazy. Just make a cutscene so I can focus on the dialogue.
I think the biggest error the game made was how much they would shit on your use of stealth narratively, but like, using stealth had zero affect on the story, you're gonna get the story you get regardless of whether you use stealth or not
New subscriber here! Love that you go against the stream and just speak your mind. I don't care if you hate something in ways I disagree with. Love your approach to reviews. Also, you were right about Assassin's Creed Valhalla btw. I spent 60 hours in it where I went from excited and "wow" to "omg my mind is melting from all this meaningless repetition". I just really appreciate that you are honest. Keep it up, dude! And stay strong in the face of down votes. Honesty is needed.
I got to like 50-60 hours in and realized the game was no where near being done and was dragging on and mind numbingly repetitive. So I said fuck it and gave up. I was initially really enjoying Valhalla and thought it was one of the better AC’s but no they ruined it like they always do. Idk how Ubisoft can manage to fuck up Vikings and Spartans but alas they did. Thank god GOT wasnt made by Ubisoft.
@@SleepBeforeYouThink dude exact same as both of you. I was playing Valhalla nonstop for weeks . Was loving it. Then one day I just stopped and never touched it again. I got back on the other day after over a year of not playing and it showed I had 51 hrs.
@@1div2agent74 did you play it on ps4 or ps5? There are ps5 upgrades for Valhalla and Odyssey and even Origins I think. I’ve been considering revisiting Valhalla to see if it looks amazing or not on PS5.
Being 37 years of age I realize the Jank really early in video games these days and only played Valhalla for about three hours before I couldn’t stand it no more… but this was on PS4 pro and the game looks like shit, a lot of areas are too dark and you can’t see shit and so I knew how much repetition this game was going to have… I gotta commend all of y’all for making it over 50 hours God I don’t know how you did it?
Great review! Stances are more than a rock paper scissors mechanic; you can moon kick swordsmen for a free hit, flurry strikes (water stance) stun locks brutes for more dps, wind heavy attack baits duelists for a predictable charge attack you can dodge, you can charge kick any non-brute enemies to deal with enemies one at a time, way of the flame combined with spin to win is effective for crowd control, etc. Playing the game on lvl1 katana brings you the incentive to utilize all stances as the most effective tactic available such as Delayed Strike being your source of burst damage. Subscribed! I agreed with everything else except the stance mechanic being simply a rock paper scissors since I beat the game with a weak katana for being creative with the stances. Will marathon your works : ) Edit; added more words
I watched 2 back to back of your reviews. Far Cry 6 first and that was hilarious and this was the 2nd review. I agree to most of what you say here man. Great review and yes I also believe Ghost of Tsushima was a solid game just the side quests could have been more interesting and fleshed out. But the World was really beautiful, not too big not too small and the details were good enough to make you feel like you are in Japan :) And yeah. The Soundtrack was really really good IMO. Good review. Keep up the good stuff man!

My step dad almost never plays videos games except for like Mario kart and pac man but when I showed him this game when it came out, he ended up beating it on the hardest difficulty. I was very much surprised.
I have beat the Witcher three nearly 6 times! I got bored before I could even finish the ghost of Tsushima- I did play enough of it to know where it’s strong suits lie and it’s weak points that stick out..
This game was one of the most seriously overhyped games of recent memory and I'm so glad somebody decided to critique its flaws because this is definitely, at least to game developers, what the gold standard of an open world game - or game in general - is because of the critical reception and sales. I basically agreed with everything, it's so sad that games that do have good moments but are constantly bogged down by menial and mechanically dull side content, poor pacing, and horrid walky-talking segments are given like 10/10s and called masterpieces.
"Hopefully a sequel will come out that goes for quality over quantity" _Ghost of Yotei is announced with a female "samurai" despite them not really existing in reality. Plus the VA for the MC is as leftie as you can get_ Yeah, about that, Synth...
Maybe it’s just me but I’ve always felt like the animals and the wind guiding you to locations (while more immersive than maps with way points scattered around) dosent really make it feel like you’re exploring the world yourself, I feel like I prefer if I see something off in the distance that interests me and then other things capture my interest while going to check out the first place, I was never really a fan of the animals guiding you, it’s cool at first but after a while it feels like just some cool waypoints. Maybe it’s just me tho I’ve never heard anyone talk about this
13:10 i enjoyed every minute of doing exactly that. Put the game on the hardest difficultly will help with the repetitive nature of the game. And no some of the side missions are actually pretty good
The hardest difficulty it's Legend, and if you die it's game over. I made a promise to myself that I would not go into that ... insanity. Hard mode is good enough.
Overall, this and Doom Eternal are the best games of the year so far. Ghost of Tsushima just gives me so much freedom. And the amount of combat options are insane.
@@XmarcX92 @JL Locs. Since Valhalla is out now. The little I played just really made me realise what a bloated mess Odyssey was. I loved Origins(I finished all dlcs!!) I was so down for the new AC trilogy but Odyssey took me out of it. Valhalla is cool but the story is a mess nothing like original AC. They shouldnt even call them Assassin Creed just make A game set in Egypt a game set in Greece a Viking game takes place in Norway and them trying to cut a piece of England out for them. Theyd be great games. And they could focus more on what matters.
Its Assassin's Creed: Far Cry of Tsushima But its pretty to look at. Which has been the best thing I have been able to say about far too many games these days.
Though fun there is a historical inaccuracy in the game as samurai would most of the time never use their swords as they mostly served to be a symbol of their status and they would only use them in a time of desperation as the main weapons they used would be arrows and spears aka why in the first cutscene when they were on horseback they should have been using bows and arrows or at least naginata which is the japanese equivalent of a spear.
@@V_For_Vigilante I really just can’t believe Sou just said that AC Origins is better than Ghost of Tsushima. Sometimes I do wonder what other people see in games that I do not. But everyone has own opinions I guess.
9:18 Tomoe was actually attractive. But yes, unfortunately ALL other women are ugly. Apart from being a great game (combat system was top-notch) and having a good story, I really expected it to stay far away from the wokeness. But yes, the 99% lack of attractive women was even more baffling to me compared to Masako's "girlfriend".
All in all a very insightful review. From what I've seen, I like the combat system, can't say if it will be engaging for 30+ hours but I think it's a substantial upgrade over most open world games. The artstyle and music are very good. Too many cutscenes, I thought it would ease up on them after the introduction but from what you say in your review it doesn't, not really. The honour/dishonour dichotomy that the game depicts in its narrative is a bit disappointing to me, I mean, I guess it's the best one can reasonably expect these days but how about this, how about an honour code which doesn't handicap you. Why not have a code as a warrior class, which lets you deal effectively with enemies, a code that lets you win. Instead we get this proposed dichotomy of either be an honourable loser or a dishonourable egotist with no sense of community. How about an honour code which allows you to do what is necessary to fight off the invader while being longterm-oriented and well-intentioned towards your in-group. TLDR: It's a good game, current environment and all considered.
Personally.. this is like my favourite game ever. The setting, the breathing world. ALWAYS wanted a true to form samurai like game, and in combat this game so fucking did it for me. I also played on lethal. That may have had an effect on my liking of the game And uh.. I wasn't the biggest fan of those shadow of moridor/war games btw. Interesting comparison. Stealth was too easy, but face to face combat is what did it for me. Love the story. Wish there was more choice involved but seeing their departure from what games their used to making it makes sense that their focus really went to trying to just make the game feel good. I really hope with what they learned the sequel will majorly improve on player choice and stealth mechanics.
As for the bisexual woman... It could be much worse. As a sexist, of course, I differentiate between male and female homosexuality and how I feel about it. But it's good thing you pointed it out, in all likelihood this made it into the game due to the current social agendas being pushed and if you give them an inch they will take an endless number of miles.
One of the best games for me and you can’t change my mind.Everybody wants faster pace and they don’t take time to soak up the story, this isn’t PvP it’s like playing a great book.Don’t be narrow minded
Thank you for giving an honest review of this game and fairly critiquing it’s weak points. I’m so tired of people saying a game is a flawless masterpiece just because they had some fun playing it. I haven’t had a chance to play through the whole game, but definitely will when I have some free time.
Though the thing with critiquing a Great game (majority said), is basically the thing they criticize have to be make sense, fair enough in other's perspective and so on And unfortunately in my opinion, theres some critics that are... Well doesn't make sense
I understand some of your points but you generally tend to nit pick on trivial things. You are so skeptical about some particular missions and collectibles that you sound like you are complaining the whole length of the video. Ghost of Tsushima is a solid game. It doesn't really have any sort of issues to complain about. You should look at games as a whole package. Any video games will have some form of 'time wasting trash' tactics - and I personally think this game does it quite creatively with the fox dens, shrines etc. But those are not the main attractions to the game anyway - its the core combat mechanics, the story and the sense immersion which enlightens the game. This is one of the proper open world implementations and you should give credit where its due.
i agree with you for the most part but an open world game should have interesting things to discover each one being different from the last. great game but needs some improvments.
"After breaking an enemy's guard, they die in about 2 or 3 hits" oh wow it almost seems as if it would happen in real life...what do you think would happen after you break someone's guard irl 🤦♂️
yes im tired of climbing mechanics, after playing all uncharted games several times..i cant deal with it anymore. Its ok for little bit to get up a mountain or something, but when it becomes something you do every 15 mins to get from one area to the next..i wanna throw the game out the window.
I miss the Prince of Persia franchise... Just nothing but climbing from combat room to combat room with a few puzzles thrown in. Like Uncharted, but with swords instead of guns.
I really believe 20% of its success (if not more) is because of the last of us 2 failure! Gamers had to cling to something (I know I did). Plus that Sucker Punch gives us some "cd progect red" good willing vibes. I gave them my money and support almost just cause of spite to naughty dog! The game is not that good though, the combat is boring no matter wich difficulty you choose, the scenery is beautiful, yes, the duels are beautiful too... especially as a concept, but the level designs are bad (and they're the main reason I wont continue playing the game after 30 long hours), the rpg elements feel out of place, the chicks are also ugly. I believe the sequel will be a fantastic game if they improve the combat system, the stealth mechanics and the level designs! Great video!!!

I really enjoyed the combat to ghost of Tsushima, as well as I thought the graphics to the world and environment were amazing! But good God did the game have boring ass side content akin to assassin’s creed (the newer games) and it just made me want to quit playing it after about 15 hours.. I had heard people argue that it was “better than the Witcher three“ and so hearing this I thought “hell yeah this game is gonna be awesome!?” It is not- or, it is over-hyped.. The Witcher three wild hunt is still the best game ever made in my opinion and the only thing Ghost of Tsushima does better is the combat and the environmental graphics.. as far as all the different facial animations and especially the female characters I was really disappointed to not be able to find one single attractive female in the game?!? Edit: Ghost of Tsushima is awesome it’s just nowhere near the level of the Witcher3! Especially considering the Witcher three is an RPG with vastly superior story, dialogue and cut scenes. And ghost of Tsushima has zero RPG elements and is mainly an action game with very boring and water down cut scenes, Low quality fetch quest and a checklist style map to lengthen the game generically-it’s just not the same but it’s still worth playing if you’re a diehard PlayStation fan I guess!?
All the side quests are the same boring stuff... go here.. speak to said person.. follow tracks... kill mongels... talk to npc and get another useless charm you will never use.
"hopefully a dedicted ninja stealth game will come out some day" yes its called tenchu, it would have come out in 2019 if they didnt chose to turn into sekiro
I really enjoy your take. In my eyes, it takes mechanics that have been used over countless games throughout the years, and heavily polishes several of them. This provides an above average experience, especially regarding the combat/aesthetic. Despite this, the repetitive, shallow, open world "gunk" still plagues it, which is what I think annoys you most. Great review.
Generic for me. I enjoyed it. But definitely overrated. Didn't show us nothing that wasn't already done, and it's story, script and characters severely lacks.
It's a little better than assassin's creed but definitely not on par with an actual stealth game like Deus Ex or Dishonored. It can be fun to mix it up sometimes but I barely ever used stealth in my playthrough.
@@V_For_Vigilante you were literally going to every comment section copying and pasting that ik im late asf but your funny😂 but it is your opinion though

I love Ghost Of Tsushima. It's wild how great it can look at times, and then be far less others. But overall I loved this game from the day I watched Pewdipie play it. I do think it's a little repetitive, but not enough to ruin it. I just wish they could have fleshed it out a little more, and made it fully in-depth. To me it's like Uncharted meets Onimusha with a little bit of Final Fantasy.. I think it should have leaned into Final Fantasy.
As always, a ton of respect for speaking your mind, and for completing the game as much as possible, in addition to beating the campaign. I feel like mediocre is the new masterpiece. Given how games don't innovate on anything but monetization in the last few years, no game since 2008 deserves to be called a masterpiece. I would argue that DOOM Eternal is as close to being called a modern masterpiece, and from the writing standpoint, the Witcher 3 is pretty damn good, but that's just my opinion. GoT is a good game. I would even call it a great game...I cared enough to get every single achievement in the game. However, there is the usual open world tedium, and there isn't a lot of gameplay depth. In many ways, it's just Assassin's Creed in Japan, without the greedy business practices from our dear Ubi that got many excited. It's just that the Sony fanboys are as rabid as ever to see every Sony game get a perfect score. I know people that think Days Gone and TLOU2 are masterpieces. I'm sure this video has a ton of undeserved dislikes also. What a time to be alive...lol. That said, I think still GoT is one of the better games to come out of Sony, despite the cookie-cutter game design post TLOU, as they are focused on delivering politically charged story experiences than actually fun games.
Okay at this point I’ve completed the game, twice. As well as the iki island DLC. And I have to say a lot of this is kinda nit picky. Of course the skills for each stance of your sword would only be for the specific bad guy you are fighting. Those stances are there specifically for those bad guys. And it’s not uncommon to have different stances when fighting especially for certain enemies/weapons. No attractive women? I demand that to be satire. Cause this is a game about a real war that took place not a find a waifu simulator. Why is someone’s sexuality such an issue with you? Masako being bi literally have zero bearing on her overall side quests, and her mission. It’s boils down to her talking to the girl and a conversation with jin. It’s 20-30 minutes out of a maybe total 5 hour side quest. Maybe longer. I don’t see how her being bi is even a point of contention. Cause the people masako was close too/possibly betrayed in her life were all suspects in the death of her family. Which then was supposed to reveal more about her. And that would mean possible affairs. If it were a dude she had an affair with been better? No. It would’ve played out exactly the same. So why do you care? The open world I feel is probably the best done in a long time. When you have games that are bloated like AC, TLOU/2, and even Horizon. This has the balance of you wanting to explore the surroundings because they look stunning and aesthetically pleasing to just ride through. To the little collectibles which I love. (Nothing makes me happier than seeing a fox den, or on iki with the cats, deer, and I forget the other animal) The story even with the side characters is rich, and I felt for the characters through their journeys. Especially Norio, and Yuna. Even the mythical tales and side quests sometimes were very emotional. This game handled open world, a beautiful combat system (I hate the it was ripped from another game concept. There are only so many buttons on a controller you can pair.) a DLC for half of what most companies charge for a season pass, and honestly it could’ve been a game on its own, compelling characters, and a main character that you felt so connected too you felt as if it was happening to you, fun collectibles, exploratory side quests, and even a sense of respect to the land you’re on since hunting is really not a point of necessity in this game. You start becoming protective over the island when you see invaders. AND a dope multiplayer option as well, as well as blending real history into the story as well. Of course they take liberties but it being set in a real war that happened makes it all feel so much more connectable. I have my gripes. Sometimes the climbing sucks cause he won’t jump straight, and a glitch will sometimes happen like with a banner and now you can’t get it. But the armors including the ones added through the DLC that pays homage to other PlayStation exclusives, the atmosphere, and honestly both the Japanese and English voice actors are fantastic. That it really feels like you are playing an old Kurosawa movie. The experience is what makes this a masterpiece. This was a journey not a video game. The actually one real tragedy in this game is they kill the horse after saying we’d have him the whole journey. That was a fucking lie.
Yeah GoT and the Iki expansion was a solid experience. I like Synthetic Man but I think his pessimism is clouding his judgement. I think he doesn't like it because of the lack of innovation and the fact that he hates open-world games because of Ubisoft. I'm glad he has high standards but this whole video really does come off as an over-glorified nitpick.

A Metal Gear fan complaining about long cutscenes in a video game?.
@Good Hunter He's missing the key point that MGS' cutscenes and story were immensely entertaining in comparison to GOT.
Lmao its a difference between mgs and tsushima cutscenes
I think the biggest error the game made was how much they would shit on your use of stealth narratively, but like, using stealth had zero affect on the story, you're gonna get the story you get regardless of whether you use stealth or not

Will marathon your works : )

6:51 if you want to play a good Ninja Stealth game, I highly recommend Mark of the Ninja, tho it's not 3D it's 2D

Not really a fan of games who uses the witcher 3 formula, at the same time witcher 3 being my favorite game ever. Feels weird
Bisexual samurai grandma. In fact, it is a dealbreaker, I thought it's a historically accurate game. Now I don't have to play this game. Thank you.
You explained it well
the story was extremely boring from the first hour onward
@PineappleElephant68 I did not agree. I was engaged all the way through. Especially the side missions. I thought it was all well written and acted.
As for the bisexual woman... It could be much worse. As a sexist, of course, I differentiate between male and female homosexuality and how I feel about it. And unfortunately in my opinion, theres some critics that are...

I really believe 20% of its success (if not more) is because of the last of us 2 failure! Gamers had to cling to something (I know I did). Plus that Sucker Punch gives us some "cd progect red" good willing vibes. I gave them my money and support almost just cause of spite to naughty dog! Edit:
Ghost of Tsushima is awesome it’s just nowhere near the level of the Witcher3!

(Nothing makes me happier than seeing a fox den, or on iki with the cats, deer, and I forget the other animal)
The story even with the side characters is rich, and I felt for the characters through their journeys.

People didn't like second son? That was one of my favorite games on PS4. That and the first GoW (ragnaroks complaints are making me nervous)
The only people who didn't like second son were people that were fans of the first two games. If you haven't played an infamous game, second son seems revolutionary. But tbh it's a big downgrade from infamous 2, so it's hard not to be disappointed by it when you compare the two. Also the rendition of Seattle is atrocious. The prolly should have kept with fake cities.
Well this just made me more indecisive about getting it. I guess I’ll get it if I can get it for like three dollars or so. Maybe tomorrow I can get the deal
So you're just going to watch this one review and ignored the rest of other reviews? Check out positive reviews by yongyea, Skill Up, ACG, angryjoe and Jeremy Jahns(all 500k-1mil+ subs). I recommend this game especially if you're into Japanese cultures/samurai movies. Even Japans top gaming critics (fumitsu) gave it a perfect score. To get you hype go watch some combat focused gameplay.
Rdr2 way way better then spider-man sorry but marvel spider-man open world is one of the worst one out there
I don’t get why people complain about open world games, I’m all for open world games with good stories and characters. Go play FIFA or NBA 2K if you don’t like open world literally the same thing released every single year
This review is how i felt about horizon zero dawn forbidden west
Played this on PC a week ago
Perhaps open world fatigue has truly got to me but found the gameplay extremely repetitive esp the combat
The story was bland at best
The characters including the lead are uninteresting
The Cutscenes run way too long and are not directed in any compelling manner
The only thing that held my interest was the production design and the beautiful world but that was not enough
I went back to playing the early access of Shadows of Doubt
Much more enjoyable
One of the most boring games i have ever played! how this game is a masterpiece when its not even GOTY?XD
L opinion
Bro i was hype for the samurai aspect. Basically it was game and idc who made it i wanted to play it.
wow u used to get platinum trophies? i've never got one.. they always seem ridiculous
Well. Easy way to lose women subscribers by complaining about no cute women in the game.
The women in this game look like actual women
This review is based more so on YOUR opinions than actual constructive points
I disagree with a lot of what you say here. Fox dens, half them there's way too many. Shrines, take away a third of them. Side missions I loved in this game
My biggest mistake was playing this game AFTER playing Death Stranding. This game feel empty and generic and repetetive compared to Death Stranding
I don’t understand his reviews sometimes. He seems to think that anything that shows an LGBT person is pushing sjw propaganda. I don’t care for the game, I think It’s generic but you just seems to just hate different kind of people. The game didn’t even mention the word bi or lesbian and had a very subtle way of representing LGBT characters. And yes older bi women do exist till the dawn of human race lol.
He is ideologically driven, and just says stuff from his NPC dialogue tree. Probably a Ben Shapiro fan.
@@Necrophadez people that have a brain and like Ben Shapiro are not NPC's it's the ones that hate them that has no sense
GET IT RIGHT KID!
@@mysticphoenix1987 Yeah, Ben is a true intellectual like that time when he told people whose homes are gonna soon be underwater to simply sell their homes and move. Big brain 🧠 much I.Q.
Didn’t know that aqua man was in the business of buying houses.
On the plus side his sister’s milkers are pretty nice. 👍
@@mysticphoenix1987 Ben is a idiot and people who like him are usually mindless drones.
