Wanted to give an update. I did this last week and I really don't think it would have been possible without your video. It helped me so much that it probably saved me from breaking a bunch of stuff up. The hardest part was pushing the door handle rod out which after I went back to re-watch your video it was so simple. This video actually built up my confidence level a notch or two and I'm not just saying that, incredible! I can't thank you enough for posting this video. God bless you my friend and thanks one more time!

this is the best explained video of removing and replacing the latch and the lock actuator for the 1st gent sequoia hand down. i've watched some other but they also skip the detail and just showed the finish product. this clip explained everything i need to know, thank u!

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for your video. I had a neighbor bring me is 06 Tundra - which had a different style of handle and cable loom, but the latch mount and removal was nearly identical to your video. In fact, the two of us attempted to remove the latch, but couldn't figure out how to get it out of the door without causing collateral damage. We buttoned everything back up and resigned ourselves to having a dealer do it. Then I had the stroke of genius to search RUclips University and your video was the closest match. As soon as we saw that the window regulator/track had to be removed and pulled out of the way of the latch, and that the latch had to come out from the very bottom, it all made sense. With a renewed sense of confidence, we tore everything back down, and successfully got the latch out without any damage.
Then we took the plate off, holding the springs in place. We cleaned everything with brake cleaner, and even trimmed a bit of the metal locking latch that rotates and holds the main latch plate in a closed position. After reassembly, the latch worked good as new. Once the door was back together, the neighbor was extremely grateful to watch it work as it should. Not a screw or spring left over, too! Again, none of this would have been possible without your video. Subscribing... Thanks.

Thanks for the very well done video! This defect just occurred on my 2005 tundra double cab with 130k miles. The part numbers you shown were very helpful as my local Toyota dealership showed only a full assembly for nearly $400 each! Also your tip for removing the door latch rod with a needle nose pliers was awesome as this was the only hold up on the repair, I didn’t need to remove the exterior door handle to remove rods. The first door took about an hour, second door took less then 30 minutes.. thanks again for the very helpful video!

Great video, thanks so much for sharing. I just replaced the latch on my 03 Sequoia drivers door, following this video step-by-step. Fantastic tutorial. Got the part on sale from local Toyota for ~$140. The only note I’ll add is that I spent over 20 minutes trying to shove the new latch and mechanism *behind* the window railing until I realized that’s not how I took it out. It obviously wouldn’t fit and I struggled until finally I slid it under and around the *front* of the railing (as I had taken it out; I just had forgotten after messing with mechanism for about 10mins). Took about 2 hours total, while watching this video several times and pausing, replaying, etc. If I did it again it would be maybe half that time given experience. Lastly, my old broken latch looks so different from the new latch; the white plastic parts are almost completely all broken and missing from where the latch hits the metal d-ring/loop on the door frame. Point being it’s really easy to tell why I was having a hard time closing the door; had to SLAM it several times for it to latch properly. Auto locking was fine so I only replaced the latch and kept the same actuator. Highly recommend doing this yourself. Again, great video and thanks.

Thanks a bunch for the comment. What’s really funny is that the same thing you explained kind of happened to me too. I’ve gotten into my door numerous times and never really had a problem but the one I was filming, I ran into an issue where it was getting caught up and I was getting so frustrated trying to get it to go back in place. Lucky for me I’m able to just simply remove that part from my video. Lol. Glad you got it done.

Thank you Soo much for this. I just replaced the whole latch mechanism and actuator because it was all that O'Reilly's had available on my 2005 Tundra SR5 and this helped Soo much. I will say that the new part came with the actuator wired backwards and the door lock was operating backwards from the other 3 doors. I had to take it all back out and swap the old actuator into the new mechanism. But after that, everything is perfect!

Awesome detailed video on pulling this apart and putting it back together. I found on my Tundra that I was having the same problem with the interior lock... not locking all the way after pressing the alarm fob. I found that when removing the two cables from the actual interior hand latch,... you can reattach them a little closer or further apart. I wish I could attach a picture to better explain,... but where they attach,.. they almost look threaded, but they're actually ridged so that you can pop out the cable and reattach them a little closer or further from the door lock. This allows more or less cable travel and allowed my lock to lock all the way when hitting the fob.

Great music at beginning:) Yep... I had to fix a squeaky nut on the window rail assembly and a loose speaker. However I didn't mess with the power window and lock attachment when taking off the door. Just got everything released and then reached around to remove. 2006 Double cab Tundra. Broke several trim clips and plastic covers so had to order more. By the way, I take pictures of every screw cause I always forget which one goes where.

It’s the mechanism, if the door is shutting, but then bouncing back and not quite latching. What I was also having a problem with is when I was hitting the unlock button on the remote, it was not quite unblocking the door enough to open. That’s when you would make sure you actually change the actuator too.

I just sprayed my tailgate actuator with brake cleaner and cleaned up the latch component’s as best as I can then sprayed white lithium grease on it. It now works better than when I bought the car. I suspect my sticky tailgate actuator is what caused my handle to break. Real pain in the ass on all the research I did to come to that conclusion. But now my tailgate opens effortlessly.

Any videos on the back door? My dad is having problems with the back door not locking.

    • @EverymanGear

I think there are videos out there about how to work on the back door but I can say this. I have addressed the back latch mechanism on my Sequoia about three times. Always use original Toyota parts. It might seem appealing to buy metal aftermarket latching mechanism but they never last. I have gone through multiples. In the end, I got so tired of having to take apart the entire door mechanism, especially when you have to crawl inside and do all of that because it won’t open… That I finally took it to a shop and had them repair it properly with a new latch mechanism, cable and pull handle. It became a really annoying and old repair after doing it multiple times.

I'm in the same boat on my 02. How many years has the Toyota brand parts lasted after having them do it?

Thanks for this video. Looks like I need to remove the entire latch to replace the door handle cable. I may be able to replace it with out pulling it all the way out. Doesn’t look too difficult but it is a little intimidating for a first timer. Local shop wanted $250!. I bought the cable for $40 and gonna try myself. Any tips?

I think the biggest thing is to just take your time. Other than car stereo and speaker installs… I really have no experience inside the door and I was able to do it so take photos if you need to and just refer back to the video. Good luck.

@@a_aronhdtech I’ve never had any problem with peeling. Keep in mind, I mostly use car washes that do not have spinning brushes because of my roof rack and also my ditch lights. The key is doing lots of coats. You can find a video here on RUclips. I don’t recall the one I watched, because it’s been years but it was a guy who was doing the emblems on his Toyota Tacoma truck. You have to get the door panel off following the same directions but it’s more difficult because you cannot open the door. Then you can usually pull the cable and get the door open to do the work.
