I have watched many diy videos to learn how to fix my vehicles. Your video is by far the best one I've seen. I'm a 56 yr old woman, and not afraid to save some money by fixing things myself. I have gotten very frustrated with videos where they expect you to know technical terms or where a part goes and they don't show the one critical step you need to do, like they think I'm a mechanic! (If i were a mechanic i wouldn't be watching the videos.)
But this video was so clear, easy to follow along, and showed every step. I just ordered the parts from your links and i know because of you I'll have my back door opening again as soon as they get here.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video!

Paul, I replaced the broken latch handle on my '02 Sequoia using this video as a guide, as well as ordering my new latch handle and the green things from the links you provided. As several others mentioned, your little trick of using a piece of the plastic wrapper to hold the nut in the socket worked perfectly. What a fine tutorial! Thanks for posting it. For any who are going to be doing this to your Sequoia, let me add a few tips:
The lift gate pull attachment referred to at about :50 in the video is normally covered by a plastic trim piece. This is removed by a forceful upward lift on the trim piece.
Take note of the orientation of the lock pictured at 4:28 and 9:23 before removing that nut. The lock tab should be installed between the plastic piece on the outside that you're removing, and the sheet metal of the lift gate. I believe on Paul's Sequoia, this had been pulled apart previously and reassembled incorrectly. Once apart, you may note that there is a cut out in the plastic piece designed to hold the lock in place and relieve any gap between it and the plastic piece. If you screw up like I did, JB Weld works very well to repair the damage done to the plastic piece.
Finally, as mentioned, the green things are too big. I found that they were very easy to cut down with a razor knife, and work well if you do so.
    Cheers!

Annnd...this is why, even though I've been a mechanic in various field since 1972, that I always watch ALL of a DIYer's videos even though they might not be at all pertinent to my life. There is almost always some tidbit of a mechanic's trick to learn from everyone. That trick about covering the nut with the plastic sheeting to keep it tight in the socket was a real beaut. I'm 65 now and you can never tell when some helpful hint can come in handy. Thanks for putting this up!

Great video and I just ordered the all metal handle for only $18. I can’t believe Toyota’s is so inferior with the plastic construction. They obviously did it on purpose so, owners would have to dish out the $200 plus to get it fixed at the dealership. Great video! My only additions would be a reminder to remove the license plate first, AND to check the fit of the latch cable in the new door handle BEFORE installing it. I bought one off Amazon that supposedly fit a 2005 Sequoia, but the gap between where the little metal ball and the plastic indent on the cable sit was too wide, meaning the latch cable was stretched at 'rest' and didn't therefore work. I didn't think to check this before hand since I honestly didn't even know how the latch worked in relation to the cable. Thanks and awesome video! It was the only one I needed.

My Toyota dealership charged me $500 to replace the latch handle 5 years ago. I had to replace the window motor a few years back, so I was already familiar with how to remove the trim. However, that said, this video is excellent as now I know every screw and clip that must come out. Fantastic. 2nd handle since I've owned this. Hopefully with the metal one I won't be replacing it anytime soon. After this I get to go replace my electric telescoping antenna for the 2nd time. BOTH my fault as I don't appear to be smart enough to turn off the radio before I go through the car wash.

Wow--Thank you Paul! I like to try fixing things myself but don't have a lot of experience to fall back on. There always seems to be more questions than answers. I really appreciate how clear, detailed and applicable your instructions were. The extra hints were great; the plastic to hold the nut in the socket---brilliant! your directions helped me feel confident that I was not going to be taking a half-done project to the mechanic to finish. The fix was a success, and while the panel was off I was able to see that my back-up camera, which hadn't been working for a year, had a severed cable and was able to fix that too. M1y 02 handle stopped working and unlike you, it wasn't plastic... But the cable's metal lever arm pulling the cable was deflecting left right so the latch wouldnt open. It must've been a cheap replacement by the prior owner. Weird but a replacement metal handle assembly fixed it.

Definitely the best tutorial I've seen for replacing these handles. Everyone else drops the window lift assembly to get to the 2 nuts for the handle. You showed that's one very unnecessary step. The only thing I would say could have been done different is once you removed the covers inside the hatch could have been popped so you didn't have to climb and crawl in and out. Other than that, A+++

@@SmartEasyDIYer heads-up to anyone givining this a try. I just tried to replace mine today and I couldn't get a socket to seat on the bolts for the handle. I'm guessing your setup, with the multiple extensions, had just enough flex in it for the socket to seat on the bolt head. I tried with 1 deep socket and a 6" extension and I just couldn't get the socket to grab the head of the bolt, so I got a universal joint socket adapter. Hopefully that does the trick.🤞🏻

Wow…great video! I felt really confident going into this project! Would have been faster for me if the handle I ordered didn’t need some Dremel modifications for the cable to attach. Also had to widen the screw hole on the sequoia itself so the handle would go back in. Part issue, not a reflection of this video, which as I mentioned was great!! Thank you so much for taking the time and being so thorough!!! Took me an hour and a half… but surely would have been faster without the extras mine took to make it fit right!!

Great video! Very concise and perfectly detailed. Your tip about using plastic to hold the nut was super helpful, I've never thought of that before.

  • @blondieboltz294

:-( turned out the handle wasn't my issue. I did still replace with the all metal one to prevent the plastic breaking in the future. It seems the issue might be that part with the ball you slip into the handle. My vehicle had an older version of that, and it was difficult to get into the handle, you made that part look so easy! I appreciate you posting this video. I learned a lot, and look forward to trying to fix more things on my own. Issue is,I was finally trying to get my trunk open because I needed to get my brake light fixed. *sigh*

Excellent video. I used it to change my handle on my 2004 Sequoia. I would add that keeping some WD 40 for those rusted screws on the handle as mine looked like they were the original. Also, when putting the lock nut back on, I used blue painters tape on the outside of the panel to hold it closer so I could easily screw in the bolt. Again thanks for such a great DIY video because it made this job that much easier

After replacing the handle multiple times on my 03 Sequoia, each time the handle worked for a while, however the lever pull still required a lot of pressure to unlock. I never thought to replace the cable and latch. When I bought a new cable / latch from the dealer, it was a game changer. I can now open it with one finger. So if you replace the handle but still have to pull hard to unlatch, replace the cable and latch and this issue will go away. It has been 4 years and the handle still only takes one finger pressure. Try this.

When you take the interior panel off, don’t pull from the side corners, you will break the top window seal. Instead, simply pull it up and out towards the roof. Really important. Reverse for installing.

Just followed these instructions, using the parts in the links and it went perfectly! Thanks for a great video. The only advice I would give is then you are removing the outside panel [4:40], its easy to snap the plastic part that holds the screw for the key lock cylinder like I did. Its only a screw embedded in plastic, so be very careful when you lift the whole assembly out.

You’re welcome. I’m glad you got it! Yes it’s easy to lose a screw in there. Lol. I’ve never had the other doors not close flush but I think you can usually adjust a little where it latches. You can see if that’s loose at all.
