How Power Door Locks Work

  • Here's how the power door locks and latch works on your car.
The door latch on a car door is responsible for keeping the door shut against the body of the car. For safety reasons, this door latch requires the movement of a handle attached through a connecting rod to open.
The door lock part of the mechanism essentially disables the connecting rods that attach to the interior and exterior handles respectively. It does this by forcing two tabs that would otherwise interlock and open the latch, out of each other's way so they miss each other when the door handle is opened, "locking" the door.
The power door lock part of the mechanism consists of a small 12V DC electric motor with a built in thermister. The thermister actuates when the door lock is overcycled to prevent it from wearing down the motor. The motor powers a small geartrain which turns a small arm. That arm moves the locking rod up and down, "locking" the door in the same fashion as manually locking it.
Most modern cars have built in electronics and sensors to sense the position of the lock and key. These switches essentially feed information to the body control unit to control things like window opening functions, alarm functions, and weather to unlock all doors if turned multiple times.
Finally, the key cylinder comprises of a toothed key that slots into a key cylinder. Inside, small tumblers on springs, conform to the shape of the key, allowing it to rotate in the barrel. These tumblers can be moved around for various key combinations, and is called "rekeying" the cylinder.
The door lock actuator in this video was taken off a 2001 Toyota Corolla.

LOL! Oh no ! You're a crack up! Hey , i do have a question for you as you seem to understand the operation of things pretty well. I submitted a question for you on your other actuator vid and left a lot of detail, but it must have been missed. Could you take a much appreciated moment for me? Heres what I had asked :
"Excellent video sir ! Thank you for it ! I subbed because you are so very thorough and thoughtful in your demonstration . I just found you while trying to understand this system so as to diagnose my issue on my newly acquired 2008 Mazda3 S. Perhaps, you could check my thinking for me? What's happening is that my passenger front door lock is not locking when signaled via the key fob (It moves SLIGHTLY, but doesn't lock ), so it must be locked and unlocked by hand. I'm suspecting that the actuator is failing or the cables are mechanically compromised. Along with that symptom, the alarm will immediately sound after all doors are locked manually and the KEY is used at the driver door cylinder (The only key cylinder on the doors) to activate security monitoring (Using the key and turning to the right in the driver key cylinder activates the alarm system monitoring). So, what I suspect is that the switch position indicator on the actuator may be constantly indicating that the door is in the unlock position, even when it has been manually locked, thus setting off the alarm. Does that sound feasible to you with your understanding of how this system operates? "

I really didn't understand your question but mind if you help me Instead my driver side door does not unlock from the inside watching many videos now I'm a little more knowledgeable about what's happening but still dont get it it just won't unlock from Inside but works fine if unlocked through outside unlocking and locking the door works perfectly just that when unlocked in won't open as if the rod was not pulling something to open it idk tbh

Speedkar99, you saved me time and money, thanks for the well done video!!! My driver door Latch and Power Lock Mechanism is identical. TIP: An auto forum I look at had an explanation as to the failure of a Lock Actuator Motor (Power Door Lock Motor). The Thermistor goes bad. Knowing how to disassemble from here, I opened the lock motor and removed the thermistor located adjacent to the brushes. I then inserted a piece of flattened 12 Ga. bare copper wire in its place (To keep the motor circuit complete). The lock motor now operates flawlessly. Just dont let your brother play with the Power Door Locks. Yes, you can open the motor at the brush end but it is not easy. It is about the only thing you did not disassemble in this video. Cost of my repair? $0. How does one flatten wire? Place a bare copper piece on a vise anvil and wallop it a few times with a hammer. Why did I not buy a $10 motor? There are several varieties with different shaft ends, plus parts for my '02 Tracker are hard to find.

Thanks. This is helping me understand why the front right door on my 2017 elantra won’t open after you unlock the door. It will open but after pulling the handle 2 times. It always opens the second time and only does it when you unlock it. BTW: Be aware of the Hyundai warranty. Many have said is a scam. And it is looking to be true. They denied the repair because of previous body work but the repair was not even on that door. I suspect that I need to replace the door actuator mechanism.

On my nearly antique Honda, my aluminum casing and cover on the lock cylinder wore out, fell out and got lost. Those ended up being almost impossible to find. I did luck up on a used lock cylinder that still had them attached I took them out and rebuilt the housing for my lock cylinder so everything still works with the same key.

I just "successfully replaced the actuator from the locking assembly in my 2000 toyota corolla.
However, my initial problems is still there. I thought it would correct, but I suspect now it's mechanical issue in the assembly...or could be the control cluster on the arm rest?
Symptoms: Door unlock manual lever doesn't "rise" all the way when I press the "unlock" switch. Also, when I grab and try to pull up on it...something keeping it down. Only way to open the door is to drop the window, and grab the outside door latch. This is sort of a random, but it occurs about 1:4 times. No issue with the other 3 doors.

Nice presentation, but lock design seems complex to me. It should make it electronic, not this hybrid stuff. Plastic gears that wear out in door in hard to fix areas, very bad. That is some cdrom level gears, used for a car? It's easier to just use digital module, some sensors, a backup 18650li ion battery for power and a backup wheel to rotate motor in emergency and that is it. The module will compute the allowed state transitions. It's ideal for this, as there are multiple states to track.

It could be the thermistor, having degraded over time/use and now being too high of a resistance to allow enough current through the motor windings. You can try 'fixing; it by tearing it apart (carefully, marking critical parts/steps to allow for proper reassembly) and wrapping the little plate (the thermistor itself) inside the back of the motor with aluminum foil, although this defeats the motor protection too, be warned (e.g. if the button is held this motor could/will burn up within seconds, but it isn't working anyway, right?) or just order a new actuator, they're usually cheap enough and probably easier/less time to install (plus new ones should come with better/longer lasting protection).

Those thermistors are not there to save the motor. They are there to prevent a fire if the motor becomes short circuited by heating up and opening the circuit. The same way thermistors are used in electronic appliances that use motors, such as a coffee grinder. They are required by underwriters.

Thank you. So my Jeep's power locks are locking even with the engine on. Sometimes it locks repeatedly over and over with me not touching anything. Any clue what is causing that?

Seems like a short somewhere in wiring and not an actuator issue

Hi, I replaced motors but it works the other way around, when I lock a central lock the doors open, and when I open a central lock, the doors close, does anyone have any idea why this happens? I would love an explanation, thanks.

Hey, my front passenger door lock pin stutters when lock and unlock for 3 seconds and it's too loud. And it's stuck so we cannot open the door from outside but only from inside. It's so annoying, can you please tell me what is causing the problem? Thank you for your help!

I watched this because I wanted to know if continued manual unlocking could damage the actuator.

What is the name of the White Slide Clip that the Exterior Handle Rod is connected? It basically makes that rod slide up and down. I'm trying to find a replacement but I cant seem to track down an exact name or part number for it.

My driver side actuator only works when it is cooler outside. If it’s hot I have to unlock my car with my remote and then use my key to unlock from outside. Do you think my actuator motor is busted? Car in question is 2004 elantra.

Could be the motor wearing or the thermistor giving out

    Basically,
The key of car do nothing to protect the car.
When the key (tumbler) were removed, you can yank on the wire to open the door.

By any chance do you know why my car keeps making the beeping sound (the sound cars make when you lock and unlock them) even when I am driving it. It used to automatically lock when I turned my car on and now it won’t. It used to also unlock automatically when I’d turn off the car but now it won’t. Any ideas?
