In this video, we show you how to repair the electric door lock actuator on a 3rd Gen Toyota 4runner. Instead of replacing the whole actuator, we show you how to replace just the motor which saves you a lot of money.
*PARTS LIST*
*Door Lock Actuator Motor

**If you want to replace the whole actuator with a Toyota OEM replacement or possibly an aftermarket option, here’s some part numbers and links:

*1996-2000 Right Front Door Lock Actuator #69110-35050

*1996-2002 Right Rear Door Lock Actuator #69130-35060
This one is made by Aisin which did make OEM components for Toyota

**For 2001 and 2002 Models, I was told by our local Toyota dealer you cannot just buy the actuator for the front doors. You have to buy the entire lock assembly. It seems that this might be bad information from what we've heard from a couple people. It sounds like you could buy the same actuators for the front doors listed above for the 1996-2000 models and it will work for the 2001 and 2002 models as well. But, please do your own research and confirm this is the case before making a purchase.

Been fighting this problem for a few years now, finally swapped out the motors a couple weeks ago. I sure could have used this video then. It would have saved a lot of time, but by the 4th motor swap it was only taking about 15 minutes a door. First door took a little over an hour. Love you videos, and this will help a lot of people out! Thanks for all your 4runner videos, you have a knack for making a tricky job so much easier :)
Thanks Terry and good job fixing your door actuators. We appreciate your comment. Happy Wrenching!
Tim - I picked up my first T4R a couple of weeks ago and have been going through a number of your video tutorials. Decided to tackle this one first. The vehicle came without a key fob so did not notice the bad door lock actuators right away. After installing a Viper alarm system last week, I noticed both front door locks were operating intermittently. Spent a few hours at the local pick a part practicing on taking out the actuators and salvaging a few extra clips. Ordered the motors from your link and received them today. Pulled the actuators, replaced the motors, and put it all back together (the salvaged clips came in handy), The locks are working perfectly. Much appreciated!
Good job James.
Beyond thankful for your videos to use as a reference when i'm tackling my repairs! Thanks so much, Timmy! 👐
You're very welcome.
another great video, timmy! much appreciated! if anyone wants to avoid removing the door handle for fear you'll break any of the plastic clips, i find it quite easy to remove the door panel by just turning it at an angle. the door handle will slide right through the opening.
Yep, that's exactly the way Sean likes to do it. Thanks for the comment.
This tutorial was great. Worked perfectly for my 2000 SR5! Some of those latch clips are tough to get but not impossible with a little persistence.
Hey Edward, great to hear the job went well for you and our video helped out. I agree, those clips can be a serious frustrating challenge, but that comes with the territory with auto mechanics. Thanks for taking the time to comment. We appreciate it. Happy Wrenching!
I needed this video. Thanks for everything you do for the 4runner community.
You're very welcome.
Very nice thorough walkthrough as well as teardown on the electronic door lock actuator Timmy
Glad you liked it Antonio.
Saving money changing only what's broke is the smartest way brother Tim!! Those pick and pulls are handy; however, in my area finding 4Runners to salvage is difficult because they run forever!! I would have to get salvaged parts shipped to me. Great video brother Tim!!
Thanks Brother Jake. Too bad your local wrecking yards don't have 4runners too often. We can usually find them at ours but finding one that is untouched by the time we get there is rare. Usually good stuff like e-lockers are already gone.
I really appreciate your videos. I’ve got a ‘95 T-100 and I believe it’s my actuator on the driver’s door went out and this is the only video I can find. You and everyone that helps you are really doing a great job and a wonderful service for those of us that DIY. While my lock isn’t up at the top of the interior door, but in the opening mechanism area, I think it may be very similar to what you presented. Great Job!
Great to hear you appreciate the videos we have produced. Hope the motor replacement works for you. Good luck and Happy Wrenching!
@@TimmyTheToolman , got an aftermarket whole actuator instead. Hoping it fits 🤔🤪

@@TimmyTheToolman I am so digging your channel. Thanks for all the great videos. Have you done one for the Body control module or the junction box that controls the windows and door locks replacement in a 4 gen 4Runner? I looked through your videos but didn’t see any
Can't take my eyes off that 1st gen in the background. Very nice.
I agree. It's nice to look at. Even more fun to drive.
Just knocked this out in about 30mins thanks to this great video. You’re a legend. Thanks again!
Good to hear Jose. Great to hear our video helped you out. Happy Wrenching!
Excellent video and link. Way easier than I thought. Really about 30 minutes worth of effort. Much thanks!
Thanks Jim! Glad the job went well for you. Happy Wrenching!
So glad you were able to find time for this one.
Yeah, we knew we needed to make this one especially since my 98 was having issues. This will be a helpful video for a lot of people.
Well I need to replace mine now bc mine won’t unlock. Thanks for the video Timmy. You’re a legend in the 3rd gen 4Runner community 🙏🏽
Good luck with the job Josh.
Thanks so much for this video!! It was so informative and made my project a success. I've dealt with no driver side auto door lock for over 4 years now. Little did I know a $10 part, 2.5 hour block of time and some patience, could I have this working again. I'm off to see what other mods you have now. Thank you, thank you!! :)
You're very welcome. Glad the repair worked out well for you. Thanks for taking the time to share your success story with us. Happy Wrenching!

@Abdullah Aarav It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out :D
As always, great video!! I've replace all 4 door and trunk actuators on my SIL's '06 Camry. I bought the door units from an ebay rebuilder that goes by actuatorplus. He provides a lifetime warrenty when you return the core. 3 of the door units were installed ~3 years ago and still work fine. The 4th one was just installed last week. That said, had I watched your video first, I would have used your approach.
Yeah, I bet this guy is basically doing what we show in the video. Some lock modules are more complicated than others. I recently tried to fix a 1st Gen Tacoma one but the motor is a bit different and the module is more complicated. So, I failed at fixing the Tacoma module but I haven't given up hope for an affordable fix for those as well. I just need to do a bit more research on it and hopefully I'll figure it out. Glad you like the video and thanks for taking the time to comment.
I have a 99 4runner and experiencing the exact same problem! Thanks for the video.
Hope the repair goes well for you.
my 4runner must be in sync with your youtube feed. this is like the third time where you’ve posted a video and my truck has ended up needing that specific repair within a week or two.
The 4runner gods have spoken and Well, that's good we're in sync and making videos just in time for you to use them. Happy Wrenching!
Another great tutorial. Now the doors open even if they get hot. Much indebted.
Thanks Israel. Glad to hear the repair worked out for you.
Great video! Really informative. Im struggling so much with the exterior door handle latch it’s crazy how easy you did yours. EDIT: My issue with the “german helmet” was when i applied pressure to it the plastic tab on the exterior door handle would flex. I used a small knipex channel lock to squeeze the “german helmet” and the plastic tab that holds it. Popped out real easy.
Thanks! We're happy to know you found our video informative. Yeah, that one clip connection is a hassle. Thanks for sharing your technique to remove it. Happy Wrenching!
Thanks so much for this video! I saved myself so much money and was able to get the project done quickly. Thanks for the right part number also, everything is working very smoothly!
Sicmods brotha Micah! Stoked you were able to get this mod done successfully! Keep up the good work and stop by the comments again if anything comes up!

On my 2002 4 Runner the STEALERSHIP wanted $250 per door...CRAZY.
Found them online for $5 each motor...thanks for the education. Easy fix.
Works great....
Yep, we're talking a significant savings swapping out just the motor. Glad it worked out for you too.
Can you post the link to buy that motor?

You're welcome. Good to hear the repair was a success.
I actually did this repair on my '02 SR5 a few months back. The 00-02 has a different mechanism on the locks to sense their position and to lock/unlock them. My advice is to be careful in that area, cuz i broke my front passenger off and had to hunt down a replacement sensor/harness.
Definitely worth doing though, especially for all 4 doors. Yields a very crisp and positive lock/unlock.
Thanks for the heads up on those locking mechanisms.
I have an 01 Limited and am planning on doing this repair next weekend. Any other advice outside of the lock mechanism? Thank you!!
@@ryanrice advice? hmm..
try to remove the vapor barrier completely while keeping the butyl as clean as possible. itl stay cleaner and easier to reattach if you just take it off entirely.
get a cheap set of trim tools. itl help to not break those old push clips. if you do break some, you can buy new ones or find them in salvage yards.
dont manhandle the handle too much, as its just plastic. its not the end of the world if the non cosmetic side cracks a bit, just dont break it.
roll the window up before you start and dont be afraid to get your whole arm in there, theres nothing too dangerous.
@@penguinlauncher I already bought some replacement clips in case I break one, but I was planning on getting a tool trim set this week. Also, I'm just replacing the whole actuator motor instead of cracking it open. Does that work? Sure! But the actuator motor assembly was only like $15 on eBay so i was like why not? Appreciate the response, I've watched this video about 3 times now and I'm still a little nervous, but as long as I take my time I think I can get it done. Thanks!
@@ryanrice if the actuator assembly is new OE or aftermarket market, then sure. But if its salvage from another vehicle itl probably have the same motor issue as the ones you have in there currently.
We appreciate your amazing videos. Thank you
Good to know you appreciate what Sean and I are doing. You're very welcome and Happy Wrenching!
I have similar problems with all my doors and my rear hatch. it only seems to be a problem when the weather gets hot and it sits outside in the sun. Does heat cause week motors to act up? Or could it be a body fuse box issue? And is the rear hatch actuator similar to the side doors? If you can post a video on the 3rd gen rear hatch problems such as lock getting stuck and actuator problems. Your videos have been awesome and helped keep my old 3rd gen running strong as a daily driver. thank you for taking the time to run us through so many repairs.
The heat does affect the motors in a negative way. It's common they only act up when they get hot.
The rear hatch is different and we haven't shot a video on that yet.
Yessss I will need this soon. My power locks are starting to go but only in hot weather... I wonder why that is?
These door lock actuators are known to falter in hot temps. Maybe the little RC motor doesn't do well in high temps. That's my best guess.
I’m having same problem too on my rig. It happens only during hot weather.
Same here
I have the same problems with mine in Hot weather! It sucks and it's frustrating when shopping. This is a great fix thanks to Timmy cause I was heading to purchase all new lock mechanisms but would very expensive.
Thanks! this helped me fix a 1999 toyota caldina gtt door lock motor! it was corroded on the inside.
You're welcome. Thanks for letting us know our video helped you out.
thank you for sharing a really well explained videos as always you do Timmy, I wish to have the opportunity to meet you but I am in Bogotá Colombia, I lived in Houston for almost 5 years and started following you since your second video when I was living there and fell in love for the 4runner´s and TOYOTA Prados in my country which have the same engines as 3th gen 4runners, I would like to see a video of all the alarm systems and programming that Toyota have had installed from factory between 1996 and 2002, because for example I had a 97 with no key fob, thanks again and best regards from far away lol
You're welcome. You've basically been with us from the start and we appreciate that. Time has flown by and I can't believe we've been doing this channel for 4.5 years now. It's been a lot of hard work but very rewarding at the same time.
Yeah, Colombia is a ways away from us but never say never. If you ever travel back to the states and find yourself in the California Bay Area, we can put you up for a night or more while you're visiting.
Sean seems to know quite a bit about the alarm systems in our rigs so maybe we could put that video together.
Great tutorial. Thanks Timmy.🍺🍺👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks. Glad you like it.
Wow. Thanks! Do you think it's the same on the passenger side? I have a 97, and I need to do this same repair on the front passenger side.
Yes, it's the same repair procedure on the passenger side.
Hello. This is one of the most thorough videos I've ever seen on RUclips with great explanations. I have a question though, I need to remove the little wiring harness that connects to the lock cylinder itself, since the tabs broke and I need to replace it. Is it possible to remove that little harness from the door without taking out the actuator? I can't see inside the door to look for any clips.
Hey Andrew, thanks for the nice compliment. I don't know if you can easily separate the harness that leads to door lock actuator from the main body harness. It might be a case where you have to either de-pin the plug and put a new one on or cut the wires to the connector and splice a replacement in.
Ahhh finally.... another great video... time to fix mine...
Thanks. Glad you like the video. Good luck with the job.
Very helpful video, thanks. Ordered 4 motors from China at just over $NZ 14 but had to grind a flat on the shaft and change the polarity to sync with all the other doors. Working well now!
that was for a 04 Corolla
Glad it worked out for you.
NO HOMO.....but I freaking love you Timmy.
@@jakehellebrandt7395 I'm not a pillow biter either. Thanks for the love.
I haven't done this project, my locks are still working, but when I do someday I think I will consider sealing the door lock unit shut with large shrink-tube and a heat gun. Either that or else some special tape that is resistant to heat/cold and water, but the shrink tube could be removed without leaving any residue, which is what I like about it. It's not hard to figure out what size shrink tube to buy, but you would need to know the measurements of the door lock unit first. Since the door lock unit isn't precisely square, the best bet for shrink-tube to work would be if it is 2:1 shrink ratio instead of 1.5:1, (I think those are the common ratio's but it's been a while). You can also make a tube out of some paper to see what fits over the device, without much slack. I haven't tried it, not sure it will work, but if it does I think it would be swell, (if you want to be able to be able to service it again someday), so I thought I would throw the idea out there.
Cool, let us know if it works when you try it.
What a guy such a master
Thanks for the kind words Carlos. We appreciate it!
Love this video. Where can I get only the motor for the door actuator?
Glad you like the video. Expand the video description by clicking on "Show More" and we provide a link to the motors.
That was Great , my daughters 2010 Honda civic , has 3 of the actuators not working , and they are extremely expensive here in Sydney, so I might buy one motor and give it a go , I seen one guy on RUclips and he cut a hole in the actuator to replace the engine , did you have to put lock tight on the worm to the engine shaft , cheers Mate
Ths worm gear for the 4runner door actuator just slides onto the shaft of the motor. It's not meant to be locked on with loctite.
Great video. How do you remove the brass worm gear from the old motor?
For the 3rd Gen 4runner, it just slides off the shaft of the motor. It's not pressed on.
@@TimmyTheToolman thank you. Mine is a Hyundai and its pressed on 😞. Ive got the new motor and trying to figure out how to remove the old gear.
@@manjsam5679 I would try securing the old motor in a bench vice and then strike the worm gear shaft with a fine punch in an attempt to drive it off the motor shaft.

Hi Tim Great video, I do have a question I have a third generation 4 runner and tonight for some reason both doors on the left side of my car refuse to open from the inside or from the outside The locks appear to be popping up and down perfectly but the latches from inside and outside do not seem to be doing anything but the passenger side front and back are fine

We unfortunately don't know which motor the Corolla uses. It might be the same one though.
Great video Tim👍
Thanks! We're stoked you like it.
Hey will these work on my 2002 4runner? I'm going to replace all 4 doors cause it's 20 years old now and I'm having trouble with two of them. I need the right part number on ebay. Thanks Joe
I have not confirmed this but it is my belief the RC motors we link in the video description should work for your 2002. It's the same vehicle with the same body so it makes sense the door lock actuator will be the same.
I think I'm going to have to do this for all four doors, do you think it is worth paying someone $200 to replace all my door lock actuators or doing the work myself? I have the time but it seems like a lot of work. Already have to swap sunroofs so two tedious jobs
$200 to do all 4 doors is a very fair price. If they do good work, I think it's very worth it. Personally though, I prefer doing my own work.
That is incredible man , I have an 1997 4runner and I'm trying to solve the door lock problem for a long time. Your videos help a lot with my maintenance. I'm struggling with some wear of the door latch, which doesn't have more plastics and the door can't close well, and the eletronic problem with the door relay control (i think) that keeps poping the lock pin up all the time. Do you know where to find some material about the eletric wiring?
Do a search on Ebay for Toyota factory service manuals for you rig. You can find the wire diagram book for sale most likely. You can also buy a membership to Toyota Tech info and download the information you need. A 2 day subscription costs $20. But, to access Toyota Tech Info, you need a PC computer. A link to the minimum system requirements is on the subscription page on the bottom of the page.
Timmy & Shaun, like your vids all of them are very helpful! I followed all the steps and the door still didn’t work. I thought maybe I had gotten the superglue on the actuator so I bought a new actuator and still no luck. I then thought it might be the switch so I got a new switch and still no luck. All three other doors work fine. I was wondering if you might have some tips on troubleshooting from here. Maybe you could give me the pin wiring config from the manual? Thanks man!
Hey Jim, I've seen the same problem on a 1st Gen Tacoma where the driver door lock wouldn't work. I couldn't figure it out either.

We've never worked on a Toyota Vitz. So, we couldn't guide you on how to get the door panel off and get the lock actuator out.
@@TimmyTheToolman THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY,
I have this problem on my 05 Tundra, however I hear the motor wanting to work, so I think it might be a linkage problem. Thanks for showing how to link the whole thing together!
You're welcome. There's differences between the models so I wouldn't be surprised if your Tundra actuator module and locking assembly is different. I've taken out a 1st Gen Tacoma lock assembly and it's definitely different from the 3rd Gen 4runner. But, our video will definitely give you an idea of how to go about doing the job.

Hi
Do you have any video of replacing sunroof motor for a 2000 4runner?
Sorry Nelson, we don't have a video for that.
You are a very patient man!!
Well, sometimes I am. I can be very impatient too. We cut out all the swearing I do when I get frustrated. So, I'm no Dalai Lama or Gandhi that's for sure.
Tim, having intermittent issues with lock actuators on my 01 - esp when it is hot. I looked up the part numbers for the 2001-02 front lock assemblies at Camelback and their description notes that the actuator is not included with the lock assemblies. Farther down the parts list are the actuators and they are the same part numbers you listed for earlier years. Did you get you info on these later years from a dealership? Do you think maybe Toyota’s online catalog has an error?
Yes, I got my info from a dealership but they could have been wrong. A guy recently did a door lock repair on a 2001-2002 model and was able to fix his actuator the same as we did. So, you could either perform the fix that we did and crack open your actuator and replace just the motor or you could replace the whole actuator.
Your videos are awesome and have helped by repair and/or replace countless issues on my 1999 T4R Limited and 2006 T4R Sport. Thanks! After performing this door lock actuator motor replacement the power door locks have worked perfectly. However, for some reason I'm now (a few months later) having an issue where the power door locks (whether by the door button or key fob) the door will unlock but the lock button does not work. Any thoughts?
Maybe it's something with that driver door lock. I'm pretty sure that one communicates with the others. If it isn't working correctly, the others follow suit. So, maybe the electronics of that driver door lock actuator are bad. Maybe you could snag a used one off a wrecked rig at a PicknPull and this way you don't risk too much money if the replacement actuator doesn't fix the issue. They also sell cheap aftermarket replacement actuators on Amazon and Ebay. Hope you figure out the problem.
@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks for the quick reply; much appreciated. I'll give that a look. I've also seen on forums that it could be an issue with the electrical junction box located below and to the left of the steering wheel, behind the upper plastic cover plate.
@@drewross5589 No problem. Hope you figure it out. If you do, please report back and let us know what it was.
@@TimmyTheToolman This repair was great and a low cost solution. Now I'm having a problem where the key fob and door panel lock switches will unlock, but no lock, the doors. Have you ever dealt with this issue. Does not seem to be an actuator problem, but maybe rather a power door lock relay failure? Do you know if there is a replaceable relay on the block assembly located under the driver's side kick panel? Maybe the R2 relay?
@@drewross5589 I'm not sure about the relay. I've never investigated it.
Nice job sir! Is the motor actuator the same for a 2002?
Not 100% sure but I think it's pretty safe to say it would be.
Trying to do this for a drivers side 2000 Toyota Tundra. From all I've seen, read and referenced, this is the actuator type I would use. Any comment or advise?
Yes, this video will work for your 2000.
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for taking the time to comment! It’s comments like these that keep us going.
Sorry for the question, but I'm slightly confused. You have the comment... "**For 2001 and 2002 Models, you cannot just buy the actuator for the front doors. You have to buy the entire lock assembly." does this mean the little motors cannot be replaced and you have to buy the whole assembly or can you just replace the little motors if that's all you need? Thanks!
It means they don't sell the door lock actuator separately if you wanted to go that route. I haven't torn apart an 01 or 02 model door actuator but I'm assuming what we show in this video will work for them as well by just replacing the motor.
Could you do one with this locking mechanism for those of us that can't open the door from the inside?
Only solution I found on T4R was to bend that rod making it shorter. There's still tons of play in the rod before it engages. I'll buy you a beer!
We'd first have to find someone with this issue in order to make a video of the repair.
Do you have any newer recommendations for a lift kit for a 98 4runner? I saw your older videos but I was wondering if your parts would change today
Not a whole lot has changed for the suspension for these rigs other than more options to set up long travel. The basic lifts seem to be with Bilstein shocks and OME springs. The higher end lifts will have shocks from ICON, King or Radflo with Eibach springs. The fanciest shocks will have external reservoirs. The more expensive lift kits also come with replacement upper control arms. You basically have to match the suspension set-up to how you plan on using the rig. That's at least what I suggest. Some guys will dump huge money into state of the art suspension just so they can mall crawl and look cool, and if that's what makes them happy, that's fine. It's their money. I'm a practical person when it comes to modding my rig. If I think I need the mod and will benefit from it, I'll do it. I don't do anything for looks other than putting stickers in my windows.
Timmy The Toolman alright, thanks for the advice
@@Zombalam You're welcome.
Great video man! Just did this yesterday.
Thanks Chris. Glad our video helped you out.
Great video! Does anyone have insight into whether this would be the same issue for a lock that I can’t even pull up on from the inside? I have a 2000. Thanks!
Sounds like you're having a problem with door locking linkage rods. I would take the door panel off and investigate.
Do you have to replace the actuator in the rear cargo hatch door as well? If so, where is it and is it the same actuator as the regular doors?
Not sure about the rear hatch lock actuator. We've never had to replace one. One problem we have heard about is the switch in the lock mechanism going bad and then the locking of the doors with the key fob gets messed up and the rear dome light won't come on either when the hatch is opened.
Finally got my car yesterday Tim. This seems to be one of the issues my 4Runner has too. The door locks are acting/clicking all out of wack when I press the lock/unlock button. And back when I inspected the car, the rear window was working but it isn’t now. Is the rear window part of the Climate Control Unit? Hopefully this service will fix that some of the issues mine has. I got some work to do. Thank you!
The rear window is not associated with the climate control unit in the dash. Try to put the key in the rear and roll it down that way. If it’s not working still, it may be the wires in the hatch. We have a video on repairing this as well

Is the motor you linked the same for 99-2002 4runner? Or up to 2000? I noticed 2001-2002 are a different actuator
I can't say for sure if the motors will work for the 2001 and 2002 models, but if I had to guess, I would bet they do. The motors aren't very expensive so you don't have much to lose if they won't work.

Hey, I'm having the same problem with my 04 infiniti g35, got this far on my own before looking up videos as I cannot for the life of my find the right motor for mine. I found one the other day but when it arrived the worm gear was too big. I noticed you just pulled yours right off the motor. My question is, where can i shop for different size worm gears and the compatible motors?
I don't know where you would get those worm gears Matt. I've never tried to source them. If you do figure out a site that sells them, please report back and let us know. Good luck!
Hello. Wondering if I could get your opinion. Currently, the motor in my rear hatch won't engage when I press the latch. It will however, engage and open after I remove and re-attach the negative terminal and reset the locks. It will only open once or twice though, then it stops working again. Do you think I need to replace the motor or the latch? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks
It could be the wiring in the rear hatch as well. We have a video on repairing the wiring
timmy, does the rear door hatch use the same little actuator?
It uses the same replacement motors. Actuator housing is not the same as the other doors.
- Sean
Do all the door lock actuators take the same motor timmy
That motor will work for all of them.
@@TimmyTheToolman sweet already order from your link timmy thanks brother
Tim just spent the last afternoon working on the drivers and passengers side. Put them in but the locks not moving much. I hear the motor running but it’s not locking and unlocking the doors. Actually none of the locks are working now. Is there some logical reason why? Is there a relay or something I am missing? Any ideas why?
I would make sure the gears are intact. Having none of them work sounds suspect. Are you sure you connected all the rods and electrical connections back up?
Does the little replacement motor fit on all four doors?
Yes, the motors for all the doors are the same little RC style motor
Woohoo, a new Timmy video!
I know. Isn't it exciting? I think people will really like this one because at some point, everyone is going to have a door lock motor crap out on them.

I have this problem with the front door lock on my 2015 SR5 4 Runner, and was given a quote for $750 to have it repaired. Do you know where I can find the part (full actuator or just the motor) I would need to purchase to fix mine?
Hey Sarah, there's a very good chance your actuator might be able to be fixed like we show in this video but we don't have experience with 5th Gen 4runner door actuators so no guarantee. I imagine the reason for the high price is Toyota doesn't sell the actuator separately anymore and you have to buy the whole lock assembly. I would go to your local Toyota dealership parts department and ask them if they sell just the actuator or do you have to buy the whole lock assembly. There might be aftermarket suppliers selling the lock assemblies on Ebay or Amazon and you'll just have to do a search to find out.
I need to bench test a new actuator that I just bought (It didn't fix this issue). Which terminals do I need to supply 12v to?
I'm not sure. I've never tried to bench test one. You could use a test light on the harness connector that connects to it to figure it out. Operate the door lock switch while putting the test light into different pin spots and see which one causes the test light to light up.
@@TimmyTheToolman FYI I was able to verify operation by connecting to the two center pins of the actuator. The old and the new actuator tested OK. Replaced Master window/lock switch....... and still, the driver's side door lock does not operate. Any other ideas of where to test would be much appreciated!
Great vid I never knew you could change the motor out. I was just going to deal with them not working well because of how much it cost for the whole assembly. Have you seen any issues with the actual door latch not working well. My driver door latch doesn’t engage unless you slam the shit out of it, very annoying.
I haven't had a problem with the locking mechanism but maybe if you take it out and lubricate it really well, it might start working better for you. If it still is giving you issues, maybe you can pull the whole lock assembly from a wrecked rig at a PicknPull. My local Picknpull wanted $40 for it.
Did you ever find the fix for this? My front passenger door is all loose and i have to slam it close all the way
Great Video. I needed to reprogram a new fob on a 99 , which included locking and unlocking the door multiple times. During that unsuccessful procedure, the door would not completely unlock, which I believe is due to this part weakening. I avoided this job for numerous reasons, but not have some confidence! I'm just wondering...with all this work involved, and potential hassle of re-work, due to a failed part, wouldn't this be one of those times to bite the bullet an pay the $140 for the oem real part....for piece of mind. I understand every $ counts and for some it's not an option, but I with all the mods and maintenance, it stinks to re-do something so tedious. Just my .02
That door actuator mechanism is very simple device from what you saw in the video. 99% of the time, the failure is going to be with that little RC motor. If you crack open the case carefully, get the motor in and the case either glued or ziptied back together securely, you will succeed with this repair and save yourself quite a bit of money. It's really not that difficult of a job. Just like anything, it's the learning curve of doing it for the first time that makes it take longer. If for some reason you had to do it again, you would be able to do it much quicker a second time. So, I think you should just replace the motor and save yourself some money. Good luck and Happy Wrenching!
Wish you could do a video on the 1st gen 4runner (1984-1989)
I have a 1988 Sr5 with power door locks, power windows and the power door lock is broken and a replacement is unobtainable. The power door lock, power window and window lock are al part of a single unit housed in the driver's door. Thanks

Hey Tim,
I have a 2000 4runner and I’m trying to program new key fobs. The door locks stop working after I press lock and unlock after two times. Will changing the motor on door lock fix the problem and if so do I need to change all the motors or only the driver side?
Also great content you got my sub!
@@castelan846gc So, after two cycles with the locks none of them work?
Timmy The Toolman I mean maybe 3 cycles but that’s it. The locks just stay in place they don’t move up or down.
@@castelan846gc If it's all of them doing it, hard to say if replacing the motors would be the fix. For my rig, I just had a lazy motor that wouldn't unlock my driver door anymore. If it were me, I'd do the door actuator motor replacement on the driver door only and see if that has a positive change. I'm pretty sure if the driver door lock actuator stops working, it can affect the other door lock function. So, try that and see where it gets you.
Timmy The Toolman I’ll give it a try thank you so much. I’ll try to update and see if the problem is fixed so if there’s anyone out there with the same problem they’ll be able to have some reference.
Can you get a replacement clip that holds the rod to the door
Not sure Toyota still sells them. Go to your local dealer and find out. Or, you can try to grab a used one from a vehicle at an Auto Wrecking yard.
Hi Timmy do have a recommendation we’re I can take my 4Runner? Or do you have a shop in Philadelphia
Sorry, we wouldn't have a recommendation for you even if you lived on the West Coast. We do all our own work and don't use shops. Maybe ask this question on T4R.org in the 3rd Gen section of the forum and hopefully somebody in your area that is a member will have a suggestion for you. Good luck.

Very interesting on demonstrating how the door lock and unlock. I have a 2000 4 runner limited and it does none of what you show. I press the unlock button once only the driver side unlock. Two more times and all doors including the rear hatch unlock. However, when I get inside and turn the engine or start to drive it doesn't automatically lock the doors for me. Same goes for when I turn off the engine. It doesn't unlock. Would you happen to know why these features are not in my year model? I have a bmw and you would have to flash the cpu at the dealer to customized these locking features along with how you would like the windows to automatically roll up or down. Not sure if it's the same procedure with Toyotas. By the way, the actuator is working fine with no problems. Thanks for the writeup.
Also: This is what happens when I armed the vehicle while inside and try to get out. All the doors will automatically lock and not giving me the chance to get out without having the remote and disarming the alarm. Kind of like a death trap. Similar to bmw's death trap alarm you would hear on the news. Yes, this is a stock alarm that came from the factory. Off topic but just throwing it out for info.
Maybe the FOB can be reprogrammed. I'm going to look into it.
@@TimmyTheToolman Good idea. I didn't think of that. Thanks.
@@TimmyTheToolman any resolve to this issue? I have a 99 limited and the doors do not lock/unlock automatically with start/stop. I tried programming with the door open 5 x on>lock strategy to no avail. Wondering if it’s something to do with the limited model. My previous 99 sr5 did it but I had another 99 limited that did not. Can’t figure this one out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks bud or all you do! This channel is the best!
@@TimmyTheToolman any progress on this? ‘00 Ltd T4R, OE fob unlock button does its job, but it recently stopped locking the doors at all. Both fobs, same issue. If I manually lock all the doors, then hit the lock button on the fob, I get the normal quick “beep” from the security system that it’s locked. Or, if a door is open and I hit the lock on the fob I get a long beep tone telling me it can't lock cuz it reads a door is ajar. All other buttons of the fobs work just fine, too.
When I use the button on the actual door, the locks won’t go down but I can hear the relay in the driver’s side fuse box clicking. I pulled the MPX-B fuse under the hood, all good there. I don't think it's an actuator thing cuz the unlock springs up just fine. Is this a control module issue? Any other thoughts? (also: my doors don't lock/unluck with start/stop or putting into and out of drive gear either)
If I changed the power lock actuator on drivers side but the car still doesn’t lock unless I put it in start, what can be my next option?
Not sure. Maybe it's an issue with your master door lock/window switch.
Are the different colored clips for the door lock rods all the same size? This amazon listing has some white and yellow clips, but not the blue, green, or pink ones. HERCOO Tailgate Handle Door Lock Rod Clips Left Right Driver Passenger Side Yellow White 5mm Rod Size for 69293-12030 69293-12040 Compatible with Tundra Camry Celica Corolla Echo Highlander

If the door unlocks fine with the alarm remote, it's not the motor. The main switch assembly on the driver's door is probably going bad.
