- In this video, I run you through the simple process of programming new key fobs to your 3rd Gen 4Runner (and other early 2000s Toyotas). The job only takes a couple minutes, but there are a few tricks you need to know to be successful, so stick around till the end!
Cheat sheet: docs.google.co...
New key fobs: amzn.to/4bSiF8N
Blank keys: amzn.to/4cSgq6V
Keyfob Covers: amzn.to/4d9a5DC
Cheers,
Carter
A couple tips I've learned - if the locks get tired either help them like shown in the video or lock and unlock the doors manually with the key in the door. Also, to see if your vehicle has keyless entry the chirper will be mounted to the passenger fender near the firewall in the engine bay (at least on my 01). The chirp volume can be adjusted levels 1-5, it is set at 3 from the factory. On my vehicle I removed the chirp completely.
Right on! Thanks for sharing your knowledge brother! I'll pin this so people can use the info
@@PartimeOverland thanks!
I think I have multiple door lock actuators that aren't working fully...Like it will unlock and lock once or twice in a row but after that it might be lacking power. Would I still be able to use the manual option to set my key fobs?
Found using key in door easier than using the lock/unlock switch
@@andrewknasiak5290 I guess I just need new actuators...mine wouldn't work at times when I use the key either.
AMAZING! I'm the original owner of a 2002 4Runner that came with two fobs. One of them was lost while hiking about 10 years ago and I was always told that if I wanted to buy a new one I wouldn't be able to program it without two other working fobs and the local stealership wanted $429 for a programmed replacement fob. You've shown that I have all that's needed to program a new fob. THANKS!
I’ve never seen a key fob work for a 3rd gen none the less program one... I was actually able to complete this with your video. Thank you!!!!
Just did mine(2000 Sr5 sport) after struggling for so long. Thanks for the tip, only the drivers door needs the lock to move I just left the others unlocked. Got it first try and I also pushed the button in the door jamb. Thanks!!
Brilliant! Love hearing that mate
Thanks for the video and the cheat sheet. My son just bought an 01. It’s his first car and he’s very happy to have a fob that works!
Brilliant! Glad you guys got things working. Tell your son he has the best car ever;)💪
Thanks a million for this helpful video. I, myself, figured out the manual unlock part of the equation about 10 years ago..... after HOURS and hours of frustration. So kudos to you for saving everybody the same agro..... Keep it up!
This is an excellent video on programming the third GEN 4Runner
key fob. The most helpful part of the video was the suggestion to help the door actuator button move up and down at the same time that you cycled the lock and unlock button. I was unsuccessful in programming my key fob until I Executed this procedure. Then it worked perfectly. Nice job with the video!
I know it’s been two years but man after literally 34 tries not exaggerating I finally got my key fob to program and it’s all thanks to your tip. Thank you so much man 😭🙏
Thank you bro I been trying this on and off for like 6 months and the trick with helping out the actuator with your other hands worked! And thank for telling me not to be discouraged cuz I was 😅but I kept trying and it worked!
Thank you Senior. After a few tries and following your directions. I got it to work. I did have to do the manual pull of the lock button at the same time as exercising the internal switch . The lock actuator died after many tries. It all worked out just great. BTW this is in a 2000 4R. SR5 . Thanks again .
Worked perfect. I was ready to rekey the car and tried this. Fob works like it’s brand new. Thank you
Nice fob upgrade. I'm a big 4Runner fan and have an overland build. Cool channel. I'm in to see what you guys do in 2021. I clicked everything.
Thanks for checking it out! We got lots of things in the works for 2021, stay tuned;)
Thank you. Anyone having trouble I had success going slow and using one hand manually pulling the lock up and down in sync with my other hand switching the lock. I hope that made sense.
I got the doors to lock and unlock but the rear window will not go up and down by the key fob, any help with that.
Thanks so much for this. My actuator is also going out and I didn’t think I could do it by hand. Much appreciated
Woooohooooo!!! finally Chris Fix showed his face.
Thanks Carter for the insight very helpful 👍
Haha! How'd you know it was me;) Glad to help brother!
@@PartimeOverland
Anytime Chris fix. Glad you take humor very well.
Looking forward to see more GREAT content from you.
@@1malikalik We just got our 1st ever 4runner and I have been a Chris Fix fan for years. This made my night. CHEERS!
@PartimeOverland
It worked for me. Had manually lock/unlock while using door switches. Thanks
Great video!! The Google drive document was very helpful! I was able to do this in a matter of minutes!! Nice job. Thanks
Awesome brotha! Thanks for the feedback💪
@@PartimeOverland can multiple FOBs be programmed at the same time?
I appreciate the tips at the end and I went back out and tried it with the other hand helping the actuator and it worked! Thank you 🙏🏽 I really appreciate your video!
I own a 96 4Runner will it still work for my car?
Do you need to do anything special for the rear window? Mine won't lower the window, but everything else works.
It worked! Thanks so much .I did the trick where you pull and push the lock while you do the cycle because same as you my actuator stops working after you do it a few times.
Awesome! Glad to hear it!
my actuators doing the same thing but i cant seem to get it to work still ive done it like 6 or 7 times and im scared to break my door lock lmao
Thank you! By far the best video on Key fobs!
So my lock button works but my unlock button does not work. Will reprogramming the fob help?
Thanks so much!! Thanks for suggesting manual lock and unlock option. Now the remote works.
Great Video and resources, but I cannot get this working for my '97
I just bought a 97 Hilux Surf and I need a fob. I’d like one with lock unlock and rear window up/down. Where should I get one?
Very informative video and Nice tips been trying for awhile to get 2 of my rigs to work that pull lock up with one hand while using the switch worked for me
This video successful helped me to fuck up my locks in my gen 3 4Runner making them not unlock or lock period with the buttons or key in the door!
I did all the steps correctly. At the very end it does it’s little unlock and lock when I hold down the unlock for 2 seconds. But after closing the door. Nothing happens when I hit the buttons again. Any idea?
Great resource - so appreciate getting the benefit of your precise directions
Just clicked on ur link and Amazon said it doesn't work for a 1997 4runner. What year is ur truck?? Would really like to purchase a key fob. Thanks
I having actuator issues too and can't seem to get it in programming mode. 😕
Just programmed mine thanks to your video. Maybe a stupid question but, does the window button only lower the window and not back up?
I have a 1999 SR5 with keyless entry (verified by original window sticker) and the rs3000 security system but I can't get the fobs to program. I am able to get it in programing mode but the fobs won't program.
The VIP RS3000 appears to program differently than the ones in this video. The RS3000 was a dealer install (not a factory install) and the instructions are different. Sadly though, I can program the key fobs for the RS3000, but it seems to forget the key fob programming about an hour later. I have not found a solution for that yet.
Will this work on a 97? I see on Amazon the key fobs say 1999-2009
2002 4runner needs to be in Valet mode first. Turn key on 3 times then remove key. Then key in one time and follow the 5 lock steps. Not sure you end with one turn key on at end or 2? I have seen both ways.
How do you get the unlock chime on the 4Runner?
The box has 2 plugs. On my 97, one plug was disconnected. I plan to try it but expect to disconnect battery at 3am when it ???
Worked first time. Thank you
I have a question. Do you have the little box with a green dot under your driver side chair? I’m asking because mine doesn’t have it and I’m not sure if you need it for this to work. Thanks
Late reply ,but the black box can be under any seat or behind the drivers side kick plate. Dealer installed ,usually under drivers seat , but not always.
Did everything. Locks clicked after holding down the unlock button at the end. Went out side to try it but nothing. What should I do next?
In the cheat sheet it says to hold the lock button for 2s. In the video you do the unlock button. Got my 1996 Prado turbo diesel to go into programming mode but the $22 fobs didn’t work. 😢
Great instructions though.
Thank you 🙏
Dude! Thanks for the extended explanation.
Any chance you have programming information for the earlier 3rd Gens with the dealer installed VIP RS3000 keyless entry system on board?
When I lock my front door, the alarm is set and will go off when I turn the key to ON. What should I do? Does the alarm setting mess up the sequence?
It shouldn’t. Do you have an aftermarket alarm system maybe?
So I bought a key fob got everything programmed but the rear window.how do you get the key fob to roll down back window?????
This didn’t work for 5:46 my 4Runner, but it DID allow me to fight Tyson on my Nintendo! 😏 Let’s go Gen-X!!!
We lost the keys and I had a new key made it’s obviously got the chip in it. I still have the original remote though. it doesn’t seem to be programming with anything I followed instructions carefully. It has new battery. when the door is open and I start doing the cycling it only locks and unlocks once and then the rest of the time it doesn’t respond to me pressing lock and unlock. anyone know the answer for sure?
Does this disable your old key fob from working? My spare got stolen, hoping for an easy fix 🤙
Appreciate the detailed vid brother.
Thank you very helpful, great page btw
Could I use this for a lexus fob?
First try! Thanks so much for the help!
Never heard of this. Sweet tip!
Thanks brotha! Glad to help!
Does anyone know if this will work with a viper alarm installed on the car ?
Can a 1990 4Runner have a key FOB? It has electric locks
Another tip if your actuators are not cycling properly or/shot and you've tried pushing down/pulling up on the driver's side door lock knob with no luck. Try this last option: You can manually use your key into the driver's door from outside and turned it back and forth (similar procedure as in this video 5). That was the only way I was able to get it to work as it was my last option.
Great suggestion. I was having no luck with this until I tried your suggestion about actually inserting the key into the driver's side door lock to cycle the locks. That did the trick. Thank you.
@@prelunar4201 Glad it worked for you!
I am confused do you need another key fob? I don’t have one
Having issues when I get the car into programming mode then press for 2 second and 1 second on the new remote and no response. Is there any tips for this part? I’ve see Hold unlock and lock and then hold lock. Also see unlock and lock and then unlock like in your video. No luck with either way any ideas?
Thanks alot the manually pulling and pushing the lock worked ! Btw the rear window doesn’t work with the fob but does when i put the key manually into the hatch keyhole. Any tips how to make the key fob work for the rear glass? Also any clue how much the dealer will charge to cut and program the key??
Sweet! Not sure about the rear window... I've heard mixed answers on that one. For me it worked - I would see if you can ask a tech at your dealer
I recently bought a ‘00 4Runner Lmtd. The previous owner had an Autopage alarm installed but its key fob doesn’t work, all the door locks act crazy (some lock/open, some don’t) and I have to lock the doors manually before exiting the car. Is it possible to program the Autopage key fob as well or it has to be a Toyota key fob? Thanks for the video btw!
Edit: I tried it on my car and unfortunately it didn’t work.. I hear this ‘ tick tock clock sound’ coming from under the steering wheel after using the key fob.. maybe all the actuators are bad on my doors, will have to look into it deeper. Thanks again.
I just bought a 00' 4runner Limited yesterday!!
Worked for me on 1999 toyota 4runner. Had to pull and push the lock to.
Glad to hear it!
Will this work if I have an aftermarket alarm installed with a different keyfob that is not the original???
Another tip. If your actuators are going out, you can use the key on the outside door handle perform the lock and unlock procedure.
I have I programed but the window button doesn't work. Any suggestions?
You the man!!!!!
That tip of helping the actuators out manually did the trick bro! Thank you
Awesome, glad to hear it brotha!
Great video and thank you for the links too!
Great tip on the drivers door actuator going bad. My 01 has 142K miles and the actuator failed during the 5x on/off process. The programming would only work when I manually lifted the door lock tab up and down with each n'off cycle. Thanks!!!
Glad to help! Those actuators are a pain... took me forever to figure that one out
I need some help I replaced my door lock actuators by changing the little motors and I been trying to program my 2 OEM remotes but sadly it just worked with one only which I want both of them programmed any solutions or tips?
Someone above mentioned if you turn the key on then off twice it actually erases all programmed remotes so just turn it on then off once to save already programmed remote.
I did this with a new fob from Amazon and every button works except the button to lower the rear window. Odd.
So at the end when I program it.
The door locks cycle when I press LOCK and UNLOCK on the fob, then I hold the LOCK.
But it doesn’t program to my remote…
Same problem here!
Update-I kept at it and got it to work.
I noticed you were doing this on a facelift model, would this sequence and fob work for a pre-facelift as well? Thanks!
Yessir! I've done some work on the front of my rig, but the programming should be the same for any 4Runner with keyless entry.
@@PartimeOverland awesome! Thanks!
Will this work if I have an alarm? With different key fobs already. Also, will the back window roll down after it’s programmed?
It will reprogram the rear window, yes. Not certain on the alarm, but it should work fine
Okay real question, So my 1998 came with the factory anti-theft keyless entry keys and so fast forward to now its not as accurate anymore and doesn't catch the unlock signal and when I need to get into the truck and use the basically "dead key" the alarm goes off and it goes into anti-theft and I cant start it until I FINALLY get the truck to catch the signal. Will this fix my issue or should I really go to the stealership to get it done there. :( Please someone have answers :3
Good lucking now brother you are the best
I have a potentially stupid question. Will this work by doing the locking portion from the passenger side door? It's a long story, but the locking mechanism on my 99 doesn't register when the doors are locked or unlocked, but the passenger side does.
Answer: NO
We’re did u buy the key cover
Hey! Check the 4th link in the description. I just added it
Somehow when I did this, I was able to program the new remote, but it un-programmed my old remote in the process. What did I do wrong? I cannot get it back in program mode.
I've had the same trouble. For now I just have one fob programmed. If I ever lose that one I'll just program the new one. You can try the process again, but unless you really need both working, I would just leave it. Up to you if you want to futz with the programming sequence againXD
For anyone reading these comments, you must program all of the key fobs at the same time. Program one fob. Keep the door open and then do same procedure of holding lock/unlock for one second and then unlock for two seconds. Repeat again for any additional fobs.
@@PartimeOverland Someone stated that Key to "On" twice clears all remotes. Key to "On" once let's you add 2nd remote.
Thank you for the video🙏🏻
No worries, glad to help!
I called the dealer, according to my vin I do have keyless entry. tried to program it numerous times to the T. Even tried the manual lifting of the door lock tab as I pushed the lock/unlock. Do you know where the brain is located at?
Does this work with a fully stock 3rd gen?
Yessir! Should work just fine
Because of the rear glass button, I am going and getting a fob tomorrow 😂
My electronic locks were too tired for this method. Locking and unlocking with the key in the driver door worked great though!
Does this work if I lost my old fob and want to replace it with a new one?
Yes! That's exactly what I did in this video.
@@PartimeOverland does the vehicle turn on with the new key? after programming it or is it a different process just for the key and not the keyfob?
Does this work for 1997 4runner?
It should... I can't confirm for sure though
What's all over your arm?
Why are you hitting the button like six times?
Good job. Very understandable. Like of course
Everytime I unlock and lock my 4Runner it would stop registering and one door would be unlocked and another door would be locked and the process won’t work
What do you do if your 4 Runner has push button start?
That is an aftermarket FOB. It will not work. It means, most likely, your 4 Runner did not come with an Antitheft feature.
Will this work for a 1998?
It should🤷♀️👍
So for anybody with a 98 year model 4runner watching this video for guidance... Unfortunately the method used to program the keyless entry in this particular video does not work. But the good news is that the answer is simpler. With the car turned off and the drivers side door open, You just need to locate the electronic control unit under the drivers seat. Press and hold the green programming button on the side for 4 seconds. Then quickly turn the vehicles key from the 'off' position to the 'on' position and back to 'off'. Do this twice, but do not start the vehicle. Press the unlock button on the key fob. And unlock the drivers Side door. Then hold the green button again for seven seconds and repeat the same process with the lock button on the key fob and drivers side door. And its done.
@@IronDuck1776 did you get this fob from the video or a different one?
@@4rft5 I had a slightly different key fob. But I tried the process I mentioned in the above comment with 2 different kinds of key fob and it worked both times for my 98
@@IronDuck1776 could you give any more tips
Key to on twice clears all remotes. Key to on once let's you add 2nd remote.
This process will not work if you have aVIP RS3000 box under the driver seat. I have a 97 4Runner OEM fob PT398-07100. Check other videos for instructions. You have push and hold the green reset in for 5 seconds and the most important part is you MUST push the top button of your fob within the 5 second range. Mine finally worked after numerous attempts.
I have a ‘98 and trying to get it to program a used key fob I bought on eBay (same as my old one - heart shaped with 2 black buttons and a green button). Hope this works - that box you mention isn’t under my seat lol
I have a ‘98 and have that same box with the green dot (RS3000). I’ve tried to press the green dot and then click the lock button on the remote, and it doesn’t work. Are you able to get it to work with that remote he uses in this video? I can use the crappy egg shell remote, but I want the better one to work. Thx
I need to plug my door switch back in
The actuators on my vehicle simply tire out too quickly, I’ve tried several times and the vehicle hasn’t gone into program mode. Will try later.
Mine too but I helped it along with my hands, up and down... it' worked!
@@mistermatsuda I’ll have to keep trying.
@@JacobWithACamera did you get it
@@felixhernandez1242 Nope, my door lock actuator failed lmao.
How do you program without orginal keys or fobs?
It works with aftermarket ones. That’s what this video is for
No 3 clicks :(
Does anyone know the correct keyfob/frequency to buy
If my lock actuators weren’t tired before they sure are now Jesus h Christ
