Cyclops using his optic blast to slow a fall has precedent in the comics. In some versions of his backstory that was the first use of his power. As a child he and Havoc had to jump out of a plane with only one parachute, which failed. He saved their lives but suffered brain damage which is why he can’t turn his power off.

X-Men 97 is exactly what I expected it to be and I love it.
I am sick of the cynics projecting their miserable lives onto franchises we love. Sometimes its ok for a TV show to just be exactly what we expect it to be and be warm and comfortable. Everything doesn't need to be grimdark and "subvert expectations"

    • @TNEQL

      Well said.
Political messaging has never really been a problem. The only people who are genuinely put out by that are RUclips grifters and chronically online alt right weirdos.
The problem is that many writers have become obsessed with writing cynical, judgemental, preachy stories that talk down to their audiences, but are rarely half as smart or deep as they think they are.
Case in point: Zack Snyder's Superman.
People want aspirational characters. They want characters they can look up to. People who try to do the right thing regardless of their flaws or problems.
Few franchise convey that message better than X-Men. The writing in these first 2 episodes is so good, it's almost baffling. I didn't think they were capable of it anymore.

Matthew Waterson's Magneto performance is particularly brilliant. You hear the villainous arrogance in him in the shadow of every line where he struggles to accept the compromise point. I love that we finally get to see Morph being Wolverine's buddy, and they even brought back the weird laugh. Also the exchange between Jean and Wolverine about her going into labor was an instant Wolverine top ten moment, and a pure reminder that we all love Hugh Jackman but Cal Dodd was there first.

Everyone focussed on the Batgirl movie at the time, but I think the thing I'm even more angry about concerning the Discovery/WB merger and Zaslav going on a cancellation spree to get tax breaks was that they were in pre-production of a continuation of the 90s Batman: The Animated Series with a lot of the same creative team and VAs involved. They had apparently put a lot of work into already and its only legacy is that it appears on one of the lists of projects Zaslav cancelled.
It was also an event where a lot of the usual internet trolls showed their whole asses when they were cheering on Zaslav as an "anti-woke hero" for cancelling Batgirl and claiming they were real comic media fans...as if any real comic media fan would be cheering on the guy who cancelled a Batman: TAS revival that at that time would have had Kevin Conroy (who was still alive at the time) and Mark Hamhil.

As a disabled kid they game me a view of people who are different without them being the villains like in James Bond. I personally was heavily anticipating the redemption of Cyclops in the eyes of the average Comic Book fan,but a character i really didny expect to be so handy in terms of abilities in the field is Morph.
I mean, holy crap. I cannot believe this guy isnt in the comics as a member of the team because his ability to morph into Different Xmen is not only really unique but it allows the roster to not get completely overloaded with too many characters.
Also his relationship with Wolverine cant be forgotten.
Hes the only one besides Jean to actually get him to reveal how he truly feels, with his Morphing into Jean Grey allowing Wolverine to slip his feelings for her and how he feels about her and Scott leaving.

    • @GBru-hx6rx
      @GBru-hx6rx 4 месяца назад +7

Morph has been a member of the team in the comics. He was originally called "Changling" and was a villain.
Xavier rehabilitated him and essentially hires Changling to impersonate him w/ the X-Men so Xavier can go do Xavier stuff. Only Jean knew the truth. Changling is killed while posing as Xavier and that's the end of that version of the character in the 616. He was renamed Morph for the cartoon because DC had been using the name Changling for their Beast Boy character for some time at that point.
After the cartoon, two different AU versions of Morph popped up. First, in Age of Apocalypse, where he was part of Magneto's X-Men, and was the only light-hearted character on the team given that the AoA storyline is set in a post apocalyptic hellscape. The white skinned, bald nose-less Morph that appears in X-Men '97 is based on this version of the character's appearance. Then there is the version of Morph from Exiles, who is more of less the exact same character as the AoA Morph, but from a significantly better universe. In that universe, he was a New Mutant, graduated to the X-Men, and eventually became an Avenger before being plucked from his home universe to join the Exiles.

Two things I really wanted them to do repair the damage FOX X-MEN movies did was fix the terrible misrepresentations of Storm and Cyclops. The other was to establish the balance of the narratives. The X-Men were never just about Wolverine. FOX X-Men movies made it all about Wolverine and the rest of the characters were like backup singers. The X-Men were never like that in the comics. And there were two leaders of the X-Men and neither one was named Logan. Scott and Ororo lead the X-men teams...period. I'm not counting Proff X and Magneto of course. I'll admit, when X-Men '97 was first announced, I was incredibly skeptical of it. I thought there was no way they could make the show work given how... the last season of the original show was so I had spent the past few years going "Eh, I don't know if Marvel can pull this off" but then I watched the first trailer when it dropped and I went from "I don't know if they can pull this off" to "Holy crap, they may actually be pulling this off" And after watching the first two episodes, I can safely say I am fully invested in it and all of my skepticism was unwarranted. I'm still in shock from that cliffhanger at the end of episode two. Like I had my questions about how they were going to explain the whole naming the baby Nathan thing without the backstory from the comics and the ending of the episode came and I was like "Did... did they actually just set that plot into motion?!"

Yes it never blocked until the movies came out and then the comics ended up following that logic from then on, though neither Xavier nor Jean Grey ever really did a big psychic attack on Magneto while he was wearing the helm prior to it, only time Xavier really attacked him psychically was during the Fatal Attractions story and Magneto didn't have his helm on in that scene.

Yep. in the 90's OG show, Charles even once send telaphatically images of Magneto's backstory to Erik during a flashback argument where he already wears the helmet. But yeah, it makes so much sense given those two complicated dynamic and explains why professor X coudln't simply control Magneto besides "his will/hatred is too strong" very easily, so evey writer took the idea and ran with it, comics or adaptration-wise.

I was already on board with how they were continuing the series but I think that Magneto speech was one of the best moments of either series. Some of what he said could have come off as preachy if said in a more relaxing atmosphere but because the viewer couldn't be sure if he was going to go too far, especially given his anger, the scene had some nice dramatic tension. It also helped that the facial expressions of the people wasn't just fear of him, but also "we seriously f'ed up".

Not sure about Terra/Slade, but here it isn't 100 % random at least. Something with Magneto's power letting her physically touch him is a pretty big factor.

Magneto was never a mentor or father figure for Rogue, or even a boss for that matter. Given the very limited dating pool it’s more like a young adult gay guy in a small town having a friends with benefits relationship with an older man because they like each other but there aren’t any other options. Which is a pretty common thing.
Slate and Terra didn’t date. He was just a straight up predator.
Edit: And remember this Magneto is at most 50 and Rogue is around 25, so definitely not close to grandfather age.

I just can’t believe we’re actually getting Cable’s origin! I thought it was a sick reference when Wolverine shouts “Who? Apocalypse”, then we got the name Nathan, and then we got the cliffhanger that makes it clear they’re doing the full clone mommy gives birth to messiah who gets sent forward and backwards through time to fight the literal Apocalypse and I lost my shit.
Oh, also: Disney finally fixed the episode ordering on their site to make continuity make sense for anyone going back to watch it; things aren’t in the wrong seasons anymore.

Cyclops' optic blast is "supposed to be" reactionless. IE it ignores Newton's 2nd law of motion - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I imagine because somebody realized that if it was consistent with physics that Cyclops would blow his own head off when he's firing with literal tons of force. This is also the inspiration for Ironman's repulsors, supposedly he saw Cyclops' power and it started his gears turning.
So, the slow fall by trying to balance his center of mass on his head and fire a blast that has reaction is cool ... but problematic for me. My brain just keeps saying "he should be spinning around like a lawn sprinkler until his head snaps off."

As a kid who grew up loving X-Men comics, and still holds the X-Men as my favorite to this day, I never saw the cartoon. It came out right after I had graduated and was transitioning into working full time/military. Glad to see people loved it and it's getting some modern day hype.

Thank you for this. I was originally not going to watch it because I didn't want the original ruined for me. But you made it safe to watch it. Both with my memory glasses on and fresh eyes. I really appreciate you. You calmed my anxiety as you often do. Thank you.

Loved it! Can't wait for more. Really liked Sunspot's roll though I did not expect to see so little of him. The action was fantastic.
While Magneto Rogue and Gambit are pretty much my top favorite X-men I was surprised to find myself actually indifferent to the love triangle. And I really hate love triangles.
The action was so good. I, like many, had an idea what was going on with Jean but the episode 2 cliffhanger still knocked me for a loop.
Favorite part though: "Omega level threat detected." !!!!

The first two episodes were a lot of fun! It brings back some plots from the show and introduces new ones from the comics. I have been reading a lot of Uncanny Xmen lately so seeing Magneto’s trial on the show was really cool!

I feel like the reason X-Men 97 is good, well the main reason for this it's because it's a combination of the best plot from the comics.
They piece this together surrounding the animated series to fit and be cohesive.
Morph is like DC's Harley Quinn, they were one off characters, but due to their fan base, they gain popularity.

Nice review! Im glad you pointed out the oddities of the birth scene. No way, the XMen didn’t have a birthing plan. Plus, the doctor had a point of how dangerous mutate powers can be. Btw, personally, I enjoy when a contentor states where each story or design pulls from. I know it’s more work, but it’s cool to see the writers/animators are pulling ideas.

A little faster paced than I thought it would be. I love the first two episodes though. They fit so much into each episode that I appreciate the references to things from the comics and I definitely picked up on how a certain character was going to get introduced, just wasn't expecting her to show up as soon as she did. I am hooked now and can't wait to see episode three.

They've successfully recaptured the compressd story-telling style of the original 90s series, which was dictated by a half-hour TV slot with commercials. Technically they no longer have to keep to those limitations, but sticking to that format ensures that they maintain the pacing of the originals, which works in the show's favor. It just *'feels'* right. I look forward to seeing how they adapt further classic story arcs from one of the most fertile and imaginative eras of the Uncanny X-Men comic book run.
