Legion of Super Heroes often utilized fan voting for Legion Leader, with the Legionnaire receiving the most votes taking the mantel. This tradition made for some interesting character development when unlikely candidates won.

This reminds me of that 60's Teen Titans comic in which Beast Boy meets the group and the issue ends with Robin telling the readers to vote if they want to see the green kid as a permanent member of the team. The fact Beast Boy didn't join the Titans until the Wolfman/Perez Rebirth in the 80's should say enough about that contest 😅

I'm nearly 70 and I've been reading comics since the '60's. During the 1960's there were often suggestions in the letter columns for new members for the Legion of Superheroes, sometimes with artwork. One example is Jim Shooter's 1966 "One of Us is a Traitor" in which 4 new characters were introduced written by the 14 year old Shooter. I remember as late as the 1980's editors would ask for suggestions for costumes and characters from the readers, particularly in Legion of Superheroes and Dial H for Hero. One of the reasons that the members of the Legion had such outrageous costumes in the 1970's.

  • @TimothyCollins

Hair is important. Matter of fact, hats are important. I remember reading "The Walking Dead" and the art was so rough in that comic that sometimes literally the only way I could figure out which character was talking was to say to myself "Well... Carl was wearing the hat earlier so I *think* this is him talking..."

Though I am curious, considering the Leopard Girl long hair got brought up in both hair letters/responses, why did they not include long hair as an option in the poll? I used to know Kurt Shaffenberger back in the ‘90s and always complimented him on his precise drawings of … well, everything. His line work was impeccable and his version of Supergirl is still my favorite to this day.
I always blame the “grandma look” of 1960s Lois to the popularity of Marilyn Monroe and her signature shorter hairdo. Wasn’t just in comics, look at movies and tv from that era versus the Veronica Lakes and Rita Hayworths long hairstyles of the 1940s, before Marilyn.
Kurt was a super-great and incredibly humble guy and set the bar for the rest of us.

Closest thing to a fan vote I ever participated in was for the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon. It was on the Star Wars website and you didn't have to register fortunately, so a at the time 11-year-old like me could participate. All it was for fans was to pick which Jedi from a multiple choice selection would be used in the season finale in a very brief scene. I can't remember the name, but I know it was the Wolfman looking Jedi with a green lightsaber, which was the one I voted for. Fortunately the other two choices were used in the second season for the scenes where the Jedi try to protect Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous. They might be insignificant votes, but it's pretty cool for younger fans

More people wanted it changed than wanted to keep it the same, but there were so many options none of them could gather enough votes. Years later, they even changed her hair color. It went from the long-established black to brown in one issue without any explanation or fanfare. I liked it black. It made her stand out more. That's amusing that the editor wanted to just keep her hairstyle the same, but the book's readers wanted Lois to change to address the times. I too picked "C" as my first choice. The others all would have worked I think, especially if Lois just had them for several months at a time.
I remember the Sue Richards contest from the FF letter column. Crazy design that mohawk! Storm pulled it off, though, when she adopted her punk look in Japan when Logan was supposed to marry Mariko.
I would really like to see some contests trying to bring the fans into it more. I think there is a much bigger disconnect sometimes in today's comics world between the readers and the creators.

First off, your wig looks gorgeous. Second please cover Lois Lane jungle girl! Personally I would’ve voted for ponytail Lois. It’s a fun, cute, look.

Two voting contest I wished they'd had in 1984: Supergirls headband: yeh or neh & Supergirl dies: yeh or neh. How about covering Kara's famous death?

I've had opinions on comic books and comic book characters, but they've never led me to write a letter/email or vote in any fan contests.
That said, I kind of liked haircut C.

In regards to the letter about how Lois has so many suitors. I have to assume it was written as some sort of 50s/60s female wish fulfilment. Readers putting themselves in Lois's shoes. One month it's a test pilot, next month some guy from the future, after that a millionaire. Then having to come up with a convoluted reason on why it doesn't work.

I just realized, the title for the comic separates Girl and Friend so it isn't one word, like she isn't actually Superman's girlfriend, but rather his girl friend, his friend who is a girl. In other words, he thinks of her the same as Jimmy Olsen.❤️‍🔥💔

I think contests like this are okay as they do not change that much, other things can be not a good idea to place in the hands of fans, especially if they can vote in multiple times. This is my opinion though.
As for hairstyles, I agree with you, it's practical and easy to run out with in case of a scoop.

As a huge Fawcett fan, I love the artwork of C.C. Beck and Shaffenberger. Shaffenberger's work on Lois and the other Superman family characters is great, but I have to stick with Boring for my favorite Superman era of art and stories. Just a preference, I guess.

Something to add to the playlist, why did they give her brown hair in the 90’s? First appearance?

I'm a lurker. I never wrote a letter back in the day. Thinking back, I kinda wished I had. I really, really loved comics as a kid in the '70s and '80s. And I would often read the letters section. It just never occurred to me, I guess, to write one. Also, I never understood Lois' appeal either, until Teri Hatcher took on the role. I remember a Superman/Superboy crossover trilogy in the '80s, where they bumped into each other in the time stream, or something, and switched bodies. Superboy, who was in love with Lana in his time, didn't find Lois very attractive (while he was inhabiting Superman's body in Superman's present), and tried hitting on Lana. I agree with Superboy. :)

I was reading X-Men in the 1980s when Storm changed her hair to a mohawk. The thing I remember the most about it is when she showed it to her teammates and Kitty Pryde was so upset - she cried and ran off like she was having a tantrum. Even as a younger reader I was like "Wait, is Kitty supposed to be 5 years old here? Why is she freaking out about this? Why does she care if Storm changes her hairstyle? And it's *Storm's* hair - Kitty has no right to say that Storm did something wrong here." I know that Kitty was meant to be the youngest member of the team during this era, but at times they really leaned into her being young and immature.

I would 100% have gone with the Mary Tyler Mooresque ruffle hair. No question. As for me, I'd really like to see at least one instance where fans vote for Legion leader like they used to do.
