This for me is one of most memorable episodes of the whole series. Hoss getting as far as he did with a girl was extremely rare, and seeing how generous and forgiving he was was I think an insight into how lonely and desperate his character was quietly going a long in life and Joe and Adam always being the ones who had success with the ladies. But the most memorable part had nothing to do with the plot. It was that line where she says to Hoss "Does Ponderosa look like this"? And Hoss says "We've been riding through the Ponderosa for the last two days". Lol that's a big spread. Also the way he explained how they Cartwrights thought about the Ponderosa was really beautiful.

The problem of addiction is the underlying theme of this episode. And Hoss' romance and pending marriage is the conflict. The widowed woman tells one-side of the story that benefits her, and sucks Hoss into her web. Adam who was off in San Francisco, come back and gives the other side. Here again, we can fast forward to our time and see that negative addictions tend to destroy relationships, unless harnessed and halted. Hoss is in love with the widow and won't here of her negative side. Adam and Little Joe cook up a means to show Hoss the truth. Hoss is so easy to help anyone, any animal in distress, that it hurts to see him being taken advantage of. Julie Adams' plays her selfish, gold-digging character well. And the Gentle Giant is his lovable self. A Dan Blocker episode.
