  • Bonanza - Episode 88 - The Jackknife - Searching for missing Ponderosa cattle, Adam Cartwright stops to aid injured rancher, Matt Grant, takes him home and stays to help his wife and son while he recovers.
    The Jackknife
    Director: William Witney
    Writer: Frank Chase
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 18 February 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storlyine:
Searching for missing Ponderosa cattle, Adam Cartwright stops to aid injured rancher, Matt Grant, takes him home and stays to help his wife and son while he recovers. But Adam doesn't know that Matt is part of a gang of rustlers responsible for the missing cattle, and now that Adam can identify him, they want him dead before their next job. Written on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"While trailing some rustlers Pernell Roberts comes across an injured John Archer with some busted ribs. He takes him back to his small spread and finds the rest of his family, wife Bethel Leslie and son Donald Losby.
The place isn't much and as you might have figured out Archer was supplementing his income with some unsavory characters. But Losby does worship his dad and Adam Cartwright knows all about the importance of a father figure.
This was a nice story about a father and son. Not all fathers can be Ben Cartwright." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"When I was a boy shows like Bonanza and especially Perry Mason were always "in my way" when I wanted to practice music but my parents wanted to watch TV in the same room.
Now I watch every episode of Bonanza I can.
(spoiler coming) The joke around our house is that the Cartwrights have simply the worst choice in friends, and in many episodes those friends go bad in a big way.
But this is one of those where the boys (in this case Adam) make a real difference in somebody's life, helping the "bad friend" to make the right choice in the end. The best kind of Bonanza episode (along with the silly ones)." Written by CornanTheIowan on IMDb.com

I love Bonanza. I binge on Bonanza, especially on episodes where Adam's the lead. But I also feel sad when I watch it. Sad for something lost, and probably will never come back: simple, straightforward human stories, free from trash, profanity, and such good actors who could convey such family bond, love that made us all wanting to belong to the Cartwrights, join their adventures time after time.

    • @beesmart4048

Yes. They could never make this show today. It would be filled with profanity, gore, wokeness, etc. I loved how good men like the Cartwrights were portrayed. I also feel sad for a lot of things lost.

Yet another very fine Bonanza episode, and this time with my favorite Cartwright family member, Adam. Superbly acted by all, including the boy playing the part of Jody. What a beautiful woman, Bethel! And how she and Adam convey emotion without any apparent effort... Thanks for sharing Grjngo!

I wished I could relive this back in the 60s. My grandparents would watch this every friday at 8.15pm here in Germany. Neighbors coming over and children (my parents) didn´t have to go to bed because of that. And when it was over, they couldn´t wait for Friday evening the next week. Even the teachers would not give any homework for the following day (we had Saturday school back then) because the teachers knew kids were up till 9:30 each Friday.

Bethel Leslie and John Archer were fine actors. Leslie was also lucky she could write, and she scripted some of my favorite old TV shows. Love Adam's observation: "... A gun is only a tool. No better, no worse than the man who handles it. Any man can pull a trigger. It's not hard. But it takes a big man not to pull one." Hollywood can be proud of this gem--it is part of that pantheon called classic television.

Why do everyone think because the Cartwrights have a lot cattle it alright to rustle some? If everyone keep rustling their cattle they won’t have any.

It took Jody giving his Jack knife back to his dad for his dad to realize how much he hurt his wife and son. Then, Jody's dad turned himself in.

How did that kid learn how to ride a horse like that?

All country kids ride horses, do cattle work, rope and brand. It's normal. They even do Eventing and Dressage from a very young age. If they didn't ride, they would be unable to work around the place or go for help.
