Granted the kid was a spoiled brat and I think Ben's approach was the right one. But the person who deserved to have to sit on a cushion is the kid's father. Imagine growing up in household unloved, unwanted farmed out first to servants and then boarding schools. Naturally he is upset with his father's marriage [i.e., read siring a replacement son] and feels betrayed by both. I don't agree with Ben's pushing the kid to be a grownup about his father's impending marriage to his only friend. Instead, his father should have been admonished about repairing his relationship with his son before siring another. His remarriage must seem to the kid as another example of shutting him out of his father's life.

Jamie's Dad has a lot of fathering to do to make things right with his son before he sets off in another direction. He should take time, at least 9 months to a year to spend time with his son to repair the lifelong rift and show his son how much he cares. Then and only then, head off into a marriage. This episode was written by a woman... Not sure how this played into the plot.

This story was about a young boy named Jamie. His father thanks Ben Cartwright for this and they all went to home.Storyline is superb. Amazing show.Bonanza is my favourite program.

Some parents don't have enough good sense to stop bad behaviour and then they loose controle on the kids. It's terrible. Sometimes people do accept some advices, and when they do, it's better.
+Linda Shipman I agree Linda. and @Deetsy Von Meeder - Jamie was not 'college educated'...if you remember he was tossed out of school for his behavioral problems.. Adam, who was 'college educated', had disagreements with his father but had he been insolent to his father would have gotten back handed real quick. Little Joe, with his quick temper was told by Ben, 'not to raise his voice' to him and I am sure that his brothers, would have taken him in hand, and did, in several episodes.
I was raised by a step-dad who hated me. I would have loved to have a father. I would have loved it even more if I had a father like Ben Cartwright. Thank you,Loren Greene
I don't think Jamie was 'college educated', he was at "boarding school", probably a prep school. He was only supposed to be about fifteen or sixteen at the most. Learning the workings of a ranch at that period of history was most likely the most useful education he received up till that time, not to mention other lessons he received on the Poderossa.
Back then, college was not the same. College could be a university or a prep school. You often went to college if you tested high enough to go, or were rich enough, and that was typically done after the age of 15 or so. 8th grade was the highest most got before moving on to "college". Most kids didn't attend school past that age, if at all, however as they went to work instead on ranches and things. Many children only attended school periodically and if their parents thought it was worth it for them to learn reading, writing and arithmetic, as many homestead jobs and others didn't find it necessary, or trained on the job. It was mainly those aspiring to be architects, doctors, lawyers etc. that often went to university/prep or boarding schools after or instead of basic schooling.
Maritza Agosto maybe but maybe not Adam might have understood where Jaime was coming from because both of their mothers died in giving birth to them he would have been able to talk with him about it and then tan his behind
@@ch-qw9co Exactly, and back in those days men could beat the crap out of their wives and girlfriends also. But no one would say those are the good old days when men put women in their places. Although that brat could use a strap on his ass.
Back during this era, there WAS a strong sense of fanily. Families HAD to rely on one another, sometimes for survival. Today, in society, there are many "safety nets" for individuals
Real bad move for the father to marry the "ward". Maybe the father was jealous and wanted to end her friendship with Jamie. The father raised this "ward" and then married her. Something sick about that...
The show features the (very well portrayed) arc of the eponymous wayward character. What I found interesting was how the father's absence (literally and figuratively) really formed the backbone of the story. It's unusual for a show made at that time to portray a parent as less than ideal.
Both Michael's are left-handed. I agree, he would have been a great addition to the Pondersa, maybe to eturn if, say, if father and step-mother were in an 'accident'.
In 90% percent of this episode, Ben was wise and understanding. But at the end, he says that Jamie's father had tried to meet him half-way. I don't see that. Matthew just springs the news and expects Jamie to accept it. Plus, I thought it weird that this young woman is his "ward" for many years and now he's going to marry her. She had been like a sister to Jamie and now she's going to be his stepmother.
❤ thank you, finally im glad im not the only one who saw that Jamies father dumped him on ben instead of raising him himself or trying, like hes not bens responsibility And jamies dad is super creepy for going after someone so young, it was very weird that he and his ward just went to cali for a couple of months and have already set a date for the wedding when they get back, super weird If the woman wasn't so young and they had been gone for 1 month instead of 2 , i wouldn't be so mad, jamie was hurt as he should, but he came more off as disgusted as was i watching this
One of the greatest episodes! Face up to the Truth, quit lying to yourself and others. We need leaders in this country who will tell the truth and not lie just to get what you want.
@yourmom_ are you particularly a stubborn person? I asked this because nowadays a lot of kids are extremely stubborn I mean really stubborn and I honestly think it's because they haven't been taught humility or empathy or Mercy for that matter You're very fortunate to have grown up and to become the person that you are and the way I grew up yeah I wouldn't recommend kidding or beating I can't tell you this a spanking does work if it's done right for kids that are particularly stubborn For example my little sister I never had to spank once she was 13 years younger than me a chair in the corner when she was four of her holding the cat's till seem to work just fine I didn't shout at her I just explained her why she shouldn't do that and I gave her a chance and she did it again and she knew that she had to sit in the corner in her chair for pulling the Kitty's tail But my point is some kids aren't like that it's not easy for them to realize that what they did is really wrong and they need to be taught Banking's only work if a kid isn't angry about something. And again they shouldn't be giving out very often this is only done for very serious things Now Jamie he's a pretty stubborn piece of work I think for him he needed that that was just how he worked I get what you're saying and is an abusive I ever yet I totally understand that but at the same time I've been a teacher for almost 20 years and I got to say living in Taiwan some kids could really use a spanking Unfortunately many children are coddled in Asia because they're taught to not really be independent and self-reliant There isn't a healthy balance of that and needing family at the same time As far as America I would say we're a pretty screwed up country oh I'm sorry you might not be from America but my point is once we stripped Christianity from the society in the early sixties it really screwed up We basically took our foundation and threw it out the damn window. Sure you can see all the weird things have been happening lately particularly within the last 5 years Man I'm 42 years old and I never thought I'd have to see most of what I've seen in The last 5 years
@yourmom_ what I mean is you should look into other cultures about how Christianity has done The reason I asked my question is because my Japanese friend is married to a Taiwanese man but I'm an American living in Taiwan He grew up in a Christian family but her husband unfortunately grew up in a very very dysfunctional family and she's pretty much a single mom You have one kid who works with her and one kid who's just really stubborn. She's the oldest and she's a girl I actually thought it would be easier for her because she had a girl and she's the oldest typically curls tend to be more helpful Actually it's the other way around. Husband is too extreme with his discipline and my friend she really has tried to do a good job and training and bringing up her kids you know from what she remembers from her parents who are Christian But I don't know if it's she goes to school and she behaves well and then just takes her frustration out on her mom because she's angry I'm trying to find an answer to help my friend who's been struggling for 10 years as I live in Taiwan I serve here in Taiwan is a self-supported missionary. I guess I just worry about her a little bit

Ah, Ben! Why couldn't all fathers bee like him. And I APPROVE of corporal punishment in cases like this, and modern psychology be damned. Young Michael Burns, here at 16, always turns out a great performance during his active acting years. He went on to distinguish himself in the world of higher academics.
Discipline is done out of love as Ben did by caring parents for the future welfare & positive development of respect & self control in children. Many Parents today completely fail this DUTY to their children…
His “kids” were grown men. The actor who played Adam quit because he did not like the way the writers portrayed Ben and his adult sons as though they were still children.
@@D_Parks Have to disagree? Yes Cartwright sons were grown men but they regularly lived their own lives as they saw fit , freely opposing or disagreeing with Ben? He gave them that respect & freedom to make their own decisions/opinions in the end? All the Cartwrights respected each other as well as their right to their own opinions? I never saw them treating each other as children or inferiors?
Parents can get sent to jail now for physically reprimanding a kid. I agree a whack on the backside (over top of clothing) or a leg whack should be applied on rare occasions. It's easy though to get carried away if a parent is furious.
I enjoyed the movie. It seems that learning family relationship was something left to media/ Hollywood. It seems things haven't change much. I remember receiving my tannins; had nothing to do with tv.
Ben can understand how Jamie feels about his father remarrying because he went through that with Adam and Hoss when he remarried after losing their mothers.

Little Joe, with his quick temper was told by Ben, 'not to raise his voice' to him and I am sure that his brothers, would have taken him in hand, and did, in several episodes.
This is a good one .. love that hoss
That is European way. He was in college over there as they call it.
Rotten apple "Jaime" got his hide handed to him
in good old Ponderosa by the taskmaster, Ben Cartwright.
Jamie totally reminds me of Luke Skywalker for some reason lol
Demonic Luke Skywalker. 😆
@@jessicab831Ben Cartwright could probably turn Luke to the Dark Side better than Palpatine ever could.
@@chrismc410 He probably could, weirdly enough!
@@jessicab831 his "tanning" is probably more painful than any amount of Force Lightning
Ben can be the most intimidating authority figure ever.
Zed what did Ben mean when he said to Jaime “ if you raise your voice to me one more time you’ll have no choice “?
@@kellymcfalls1458 I guess it means that Ben would make Jamie's desicion for him.
But he's also a caring and understanding father!!!!
Man , oh man . If Adam were there , he would have done far more than tan that brat's behind .
Maritza Agosto maybe but maybe not Adam might have understood where Jaime was coming from because both of their mothers died in giving birth to them he would have been able to talk with him about it and then tan his behind
They call this child abuse now days. And that's why kids are like they are now days
Generally less aggressive, more socially aware and kinder to each other? That makes sense given the well researched affects of hitting children.
Well back in those days men could beat the crap out of their wives and girlfriends also.
@@ch-qw9co Exactly, and back in those days men could beat the crap out of their wives and girlfriends also. But no one would say those are the good old days when men put women in their places. Although that brat could use a strap on his ass.
You're right Jesse.
I think that's why Jaime's dad left him with Ben. For some old fashioned discipline.
Thank you very much for posting!!!!!!!
Rember royalty married their siblings and sometimes fathers married their daughter
i remember 1976 our 1tv bonanza 10uears old
I LOVE THIS EPISODE
The show features the (very well portrayed) arc of the eponymous wayward character. What I found interesting was how the father's absence (literally and figuratively) really formed the backbone of the story. It's unusual for a show made at that time to portray a parent as less than ideal.
Wonderful show. God bless
Love this show thanks for posting God Bless 🙌🙏❤😊
Great great great 😁😇🧝♀️♥️
Both Michael's are left-handed. I agree, he would have been a great addition to the Pondersa, maybe to eturn if, say, if father and step-mother were in an 'accident'.
Hahaha
In 90% percent of this episode, Ben was wise and understanding. But at the end, he says that Jamie's father had tried to meet him half-way. I don't see that. Matthew just springs the news and expects Jamie to accept it. Plus, I thought it weird that this young woman is his "ward" for many years and now he's going to marry her. She had been like a sister to Jamie and now she's going to be his stepmother.
❤ thank you, finally im glad im not the only one who saw that
Jamies father dumped him on ben instead of raising him himself or trying, like hes not bens responsibility
And jamies dad is super creepy for going after someone so young, it was very weird that he and his ward just went to cali for a couple of months and have already set a date for the wedding when they get back, super weird
If the woman wasn't so young and they had been gone for 1 month instead of 2 , i wouldn't be so mad, jamie was hurt as he should, but he came more off as disgusted as was i watching this
I love the way Ben spanks kids that throw tantrums...lol
👩 wow Ben Cartwright is a parent that shows off 💇 heirs. Amazing.
One of the greatest episodes! Face up to the Truth, quit lying to yourself and others. We need leaders in this country who will tell the truth and not lie just to get what you want.
This is an awesome episode!!! All kids these days need some discipline and work ethic these days! Lol
It didn't hurt us. We turned out just fine
I think your comment is right on. So why the LOL at the end? Please dont be afraid to speak your mind.
@yourmom_ are you particularly a stubborn person?
I asked this because nowadays a lot of kids are extremely stubborn I mean really stubborn and I honestly think it's because they haven't been taught humility or empathy or Mercy for that matter
You're very fortunate to have grown up and to become the person that you are and the way I grew up yeah I wouldn't recommend kidding or beating
I can't tell you this a spanking does work if it's done right for kids that are particularly stubborn
For example my little sister I never had to spank once she was 13 years younger than me a chair in the corner when she was four of her holding the cat's till seem to work just fine
I didn't shout at her I just explained her why she shouldn't do that and I gave her a chance and she did it again and she knew that she had to sit in the corner in her chair for pulling the Kitty's tail
But my point is some kids aren't like that it's not easy for them to realize that what they did is really wrong and they need to be taught
Banking's only work if a kid isn't angry about something. And again they shouldn't be giving out very often this is only done for very serious things
Now Jamie he's a pretty stubborn piece of work I think for him he needed that that was just how he worked
I get what you're saying and is an abusive I ever yet I totally understand that but at the same time I've been a teacher for almost 20 years and I got to say living in Taiwan some kids could really use a spanking
Unfortunately many children are coddled in Asia because they're taught to not really be independent and self-reliant
There isn't a healthy balance of that and needing family at the same time
As far as America I would say we're a pretty screwed up country oh I'm sorry you might not be from America but my point is once we stripped Christianity from the society in the early sixties it really screwed up
We basically took our foundation and threw it out the damn window.
Sure you can see all the weird things have been happening lately particularly within the last 5 years
Man I'm 42 years old and I never thought I'd have to see most of what I've seen in The last 5 years
@yourmom_ if you're only looking at European settlers then yeah but apparently you have a city to the cultures.
I have
@yourmom_ what I mean is you should look into other cultures about how Christianity has done
The reason I asked my question is because my Japanese friend is married to a Taiwanese man but I'm an American living in Taiwan
He grew up in a Christian family but her husband unfortunately grew up in a very very dysfunctional family and she's pretty much a single mom
You have one kid who works with her and one kid who's just really stubborn. She's the oldest and she's a girl I actually thought it would be easier for her because she had a girl and she's the oldest typically curls tend to be more helpful
Actually it's the other way around. Husband is too extreme with his discipline and my friend she really has tried to do a good job and training and bringing up her kids you know from what she remembers from her parents who are Christian
But I don't know if it's she goes to school and she behaves well and then just takes her frustration out on her mom because she's angry
I'm trying to find an answer to help my friend who's been struggling for 10 years as I live in Taiwan
I serve here in Taiwan is a self-supported missionary. I guess I just worry about her a little bit
Michael Burns is one handsome young man (besides Michael Landon of course)...
+OLIVIA ANDRADE Yes, I like MIchael Burns, who is now a professor emeritus of history at Mount Holyoke College. (Jamie finally finished college).
I don't believe it!What a start to the new year.Last night I found a Bonanza episode I cannot get hold of,with my fav 🌟 guesting.Jan Michael Vincent. Then two interviews with Peter Tork & now a Bonanza episode with Mikey Burns from Journey to Shiloh. If this keeps up 2022 will be a brilliant year!LOL & Happy New Year to all.
25:57 - 26:44 HAHA! GO MR. CARTWRIGHT!
Love me some Michael Burns.🥰
Why do these stupid men blame the child earn the wife dies in childbirth? Who impregnated them in the first place? The child is not to blame.
Muy buen capitulo.subanlo.en.español por favor
Always enjoyed Bonanza!
The sheriff from the Virginian!!!
Ah, Ben! Why couldn't all fathers bee like him. And I APPROVE of corporal punishment in cases like this, and modern psychology be damned. Young Michael Burns, here at 16, always turns out a great performance during his active acting years. He went on to distinguish himself in the world of higher academics.
Joe Owens: And he is a published author & now runs a horse ranch. He will always be one of the Shiloh Seven for me.
Ben always knew the right things to say. This world needs more Ben Cartwrights.
Bens firm now yet softish compared to my family lol love it
Bloody hell, what's your family like, then??
@@CathyKitson haha good softish as temper and stuff he dont yell often not as in discipline
@@saracoleman886 So your dad would've done the same with Jamie, huh?
Isn't that boy also Barnaby on Wagon Train??? Yes! Ben....tore that behind up🙂
That kid must be the inspiration to Draco Malfoy
Great episode.
Amazing how he could sit down the next day
Hoss in his night shire wearing his 10 gallon hat, TFF
We need more dads like Ben Cartwright today. Kids nowadays need a good old-fashioned whipping nowadays. Who's with me?
@@D_Parks.... Pernell Roberts may have quit also as he got jealous of the other stars popularity. However it may have been what you said as well.
I enjoyed the movie. It seems that learning family relationship was something left to media/ Hollywood. It seems things haven't change much. I remember receiving my tannins; had nothing to do with tv.
Ben raised 3 rowdy boys.....he most certainly can handle Jamie!
I think they were wrong, no one considered how Jamie would be hurt....he was not wrong in feeling hurt. The father ignored him from birth
Exactly...this was wrong all the way around
Ben can understand how Jamie feels about his father remarrying because he went through that with Adam and Hoss when he remarried after losing their mothers.
Yes, Ben was extremely different. Adam’s mother died in childbirth also. But Ben always adored Adam.
Were these three sleeping in their boots when sheriff came, no slippers in those days😂
So very true i expierienced the same..i fell more inlove with Bonanza, as a adult
Ben is very patient! more than I.
@28:53, if this took place after cameras had been invented, I like to visualize Jamie all like “Take a picture and it’ll last longer!” as he sees Ben, Hoss, and Little Joe staring at him while he plods through the work.
This takes place in the early 1860's . Cameras had been around for over 20 years by then.
Should of let Little Joe deal with the calf issue
