    The Auld Sod
    Director: William Witney
    Writer: Charles Lang
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 4 February 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
James Dunn guest-stars as Danny Lynch, an elderly Ponderosa ranch hand. Upon learning that his mother Nellie (Cheerio Meredith) has left Ireland to pay him a visit, Danny goes into a panic: For lo these many years, he has been lying to his mother that he is in charge of the Ponderosa. To make the old woman happy, the Cartwrights put on an elaborate charade, wherein Danny is lord and master of their ranch, and they are merely his hired hands. Naturally, this little deception snowballs into a major crisis. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"Cheerio Meredith arrives at the Ponderosa just in time to save Hoss who has fallen into the well. But Dan Blocker does not correct her mistaken impression nor do the other Cartwrights that it is her son James Dunn who is the owner of the Ponderosa. She's just such a dear sweet old soul and she does do the cleaning and cooking while Hop Sing is away.
Dunn is her deadbeat drunken son who spends half his nights sleeping t off in Roy Coffee's jail. It's only up to a point that the Cartwrights play along with this charade.
Dunn's portrayal is sadly too close to his own real life and close to his Oscar winner from A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. It's a good episode and the scenes with Dunn and Meredith are precious indeed." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

I love the beginning of this episode. Adam is just like a big brother. First, he sides with Hoss to get Joe to stay and clean the house. Then, he sides with Joe to get Hoss to stay and clean. All Adam knows is that he is not going to be the one who stays.

I've watched this episode several times and never noticed that Adam and Joe dipped their fingers

This show is pretty violent isn't it? And people always talk about it being such a wholesome family show yet if you let your kids watch it you are exposing them to countless cold blooded murders. Not to mention all the drinking and gambling and saloon ladies. Oof.

Anyone who knows the area is aware that the Ponderosa home was at 6,000 feet in the Sierra, separated from Virginia City by another 2,000 foot climb over the ridgeline, down into a 10 mile wide 4,000 foot valley then back up another 3,000 feet to Virginia City. Total distance: about 50 miles. It always cracks me up how they ride into town at the drop of a hat. Good thing it's all made up.

This one is hard to watch. I understand not wanting to hurt an old lady since I'm one myself, but lies hurt infinitely more. I had rather be hurt by the truth than comforted by lies. At her age, she's handled far worse.

@@splenderella9/videosSo I just watched it again right now and it seems you're right because at 26:17 they say he lost $250 and was broke so that was the fare, except for the drinks and meal he bought. That kind of seems like a plot hole.
But now another thing that seems weird. The agent selling the tickets said to leave $10 "that will more than cover the cost of the telegraph". $10 for a telegraph? That's like $300 in today's money?

    Translation of the title:
    The Old Drunk.
Sod has many meanings and the title author picked the one for Danny. Also, stereotyping the Irish, eh? Ever see the one with John Wayne as an Irish boxer? Movie: The Quiet Man. Sheesh, and the Irish Americans seem to try to live up to the stereotype, it sometimes seems.

No Bob - "sod" meaning "earth"....NOT "sot", which is a word for a drunk! The "auld sod" means the old country - Ireland!
