  • Bonanza - Episode 92 - Look to the Stars - The Cartwrights encourage young genius, Albert Michelson, to pursue his scientific experiments while trying to discover why schoolmaster, George Norton, expelled Albert from school and seems determined to stand in the way of his appointment to the prestigious Annapolis Naval Academy.
    Look at the Stars
    Director: Don McDougall
Writers: Robert M. Fresco, Paul Rink
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 18 March 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
In 1907, the brilliant physicist Albert Abraham Michelson won the Nobel Prize for developing the optical precision instruments which made it possible for his fellow scientists to measure light waves. According to Bonanza scriptwriters Robert Fresco and Paul Rink, the German-born Michelson spent his youth in Virginia City, Nevada, where he was a student in the classroom presided over by the stern and merciless Mr. Norton (William Schallert). When young Albert (Douglas Lambert) is designated as a "problem child" and expelled from school, Ben Cartwright tries to find out why. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"In the entire run of the Bonanza series twice the Cartwright clan ran into true life human beings who when they were running the Ponderosa, who resided in Virginia City. One was an episode about Mark Twain where Howard Duff played the legendary American writer in his early years.
The other was this episode which involved Albert Michaelson the first American to win a Nobel Prize. He was born in Prussia in what is now part of Poland and did in fact come to America with his parents where they were merchants in Virginia City. In 1869 young Michaelson won a presidential appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis from President Ulysses S. Grant where he stayed on as an instructor after graduating. It was the start of his career.
This Bonanza episode offers a fictional account of how Michaelson got that appointment. The key figure here is schoolmaster William Schallert who won't recommend him and his recommendation carries a lot of weight. The Cartwrights in this episode force Schallert to confront his own prejudices which include anti-Semitism.
Joe DeSantis and Penny Santon play the older Michaelsons and young Douglas Lambert winningly plays Albert. It was one of Bonanza's best episodes. The only gunfire was that of Hoss firing his pistol in the air so that young Albert could measure the speed of the sound at which it traveled.
What made Bonanza so endearingly popular to the public then and in syndication ever since was the family and the relationships the Cartwright sons had with each other and with their father. Three half brothers and their father facing all kinds of problems every week. We all got to know the Cartwrights, know them better than some of our relatives. And we cared about them.
In this episode the Cartwrights interacted with the Michaelsons to help them realize their own vision of the American dream. Hopefully Bonanza fans and others won't miss this one if it's broadcast again." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Grew up watching these with my dad, more than 45 years separating us but we connected over them. He’d always say “Do you think Adam Cartwright would do that?” when I got out of line...I came out of the closet a couple years ago and it was hard for him I know, but after time he showed his love the best way he knew how; inviting me over to watch Bonanza. This episode put tears in my eyes again, I love it when challenges are solved, and people move forward with smiles on their happy faces. There's so much here, a physicist created, the future of the creation of a way to measure light and some forms of bigotry we all must sense, understand, and face head on, and the application of this same understanding and allow forgiveness and acceptance to prevail We never know who or what may come of this charitable application of unconditional love will create in our society.

@n/a Excellent point. Because some bad things were done by one group (mainly white westerners) to people of other groups, we now have a complete over-reaction leading to the desire to identify as a victim (regardless of if they are) and to attack and suppress the rights (especially freedom of speech) of the descendants of those whom are judged to be oppressors. To this extent, it it dangerous to follow stories like this without an open mind and deliscernment.

Totally glorious in every way - Ben's gentle way, honest and open, in handling racial prejudice was years and years ahead of his time. There had not even been the Civil War yet, I believe. Young Douglas Lambert (Albert) was superb in his roll; I hope he had a great acting career.

    • @lynettepalecek3141
      @lynettepalecek3141 2 года назад +3

@Joe Owens. I agree Joe. This was a superb episode. Ben had an excellent way of showing Mr Norton's bigotry. According to Grjngo, Albert Michaelson won a presidential appointment to the Navel Academy in Annapolis from President Grant in 1869. He stayed on as an instructor after graduating. The Civil War started on April 12, 1861. Fortunately, President Lincoln and the US Constitution helped did help in a lot of ways. President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Slavery was abolished by the 13th Amendment. The 15th Amendment gave blacks the right to vote. The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. My mother had to deal with very prejudiced teachers when she was in school in the 1920s and 1930s. She grew up in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Bible was still taught in the public schools then. The teachers knew that she was English and Protestant. They preferred Catholic Irish students. She was exceptionally bright. She graduated from high school when she was 16 years old. She knew bigotry firsthand. I had a very prejudiced physical education teacher when I was in the 8th grade in 1970. She was so nasty to me because I had to wear a full body brace. She tried to force me to do activities that my doctor told me not to do. After I got a note from my doctor explaining what I could and could not do and I gave it to her, she flunked me!! When I asked her why, she said "I'm not going to let a little girl tell me what to do." My mother made her change my grade, but it wasn't until I was in college that I could socialize with people again. I understand extremely well what bigotry is like. I hope that you respond to this comment. I made a mistake by putting the word "helped" in a sentence that didn't belong there. I'm sorry about that.

Last US production date was in 1973, unsure when the UK last showed this, I have now developed a liking for the original Carts since RUclips, but no missing them, as the 70’s was a long time ago.

So many lessons in the Cartwright's. Going back and thinking has our nation really progressed. I like to think so but I'm not so sure. This beautiful nation of ours is so divided. Even members of Congress speak in a way that promotes one race over another and a few constantly make antisemitic comments.

Bonanza almost always has a moral lesson within an episode, something to be learned, for the good. TV entertainment of today seems to lack that quality of this show from 60 years ago. America is poorer for its loss.

With all the choices for entertainment out there, I turned back to Bonanza because every now and then, scripts like this are included. I was so tired of the graphic sex on too many shows, I had begun to joke that I had found some Bonanza episodes to be refreshing...if you could get past all of the gunslinging lol. This is more of what i'm in the mood for these days....and no shoot outs to boot!

poor teacher......smart enough to teach the entire towns kids but he just isnt smart enough to realize all the kids he threw out of school...were non-white....poor teacher deserves a medal for suddenly becoming smart enough after the kids are paraded in front of him...
