  • Bonanza - Episode 58 - Cutthroat Junction - Jed Trask has been with the Sierra Mail & Stage Lines for many years. When a group of gunmen in the town of Latigo cuts off delivery of the goods and mail, he goes after those responsible.
    Cutthroat Junction
    Director: Dick Moder
    Writer: Nat Tanchuck
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 18 March 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
The Cartwrights accompany freight-company troubleshooter Ted Trask (Robert Lansing) to the far from peaceful community of Cut Throat Junction. Trask has been hired to round up a gang of thieves, and has been given a full and free hand to accomplish his goal. But when he is abruptly fired in the middle of his assignment, the disgruntled Trask joins the thieves in their efforts to prevent vital supplies from reaching Virginia City. Reviews:
"Two things came to mind watching this Bonanza episode. I had an experience similar to Robert Lansing's in this episode. Lansing plays a troubleshooter for stagecoach line that is having problems making deliveries to Virginia City. He gets results, but he's not squeamish about what he has to do. All four Cartwrights go with him to a small town run by outlaws who've been preying on the line with various holdups and they're headquartered in this town of Latigo. Lansing gets wounded, but the outlaw leader Dick Wessel leaves town.
Then Lansing gets fired, a little back channel office politics. As fanatical as he was in his service to the stagecoach line he now looks to destroy it. I too was almost fired for what I thought was unjust circumstances or at least it was something my agency went overboard with. I kept my job, but I know how Lansing felt.
There's also this rather ridiculous film I did a review on that came out from Warner Brothers in the 30s. Oil For The Lamps Of China where Pat O'Brien is I think rather ridiculously devoted to his company as he toils away in the nether reaches of China.
Lansing is fine and he has a devoted wife just as Pat O'Brien had in Josephine Hutchinson in the aforementioned film. She is played by Shirley Ballard and she scores well in the role.
I really felt Lansing's pain here." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"This was a good episode about how a good man can go bad. I loved the main guest character in this - have seen him play similar good/bad characters before. A man works hard cleaning up a place. He puts all his money, blood, sweat and tears then suddenly he's fired. What's he to do? The decision this man made wasn't the best one, but perhaps it was the only one his broken heart could do.
In the end, he was pure evil. Countless people had to die before this evilness ended. Ben and his sons were blinded by the facts.
    A very good episode!

At the end Ben walks in barn to talk Jed out of it after being assured Jed was willing to listen. You might think Ben’s boys would have rushed the barn the second the first shot was fired. Their hesitation could have gotten Ben killed. This occurrence does not hold true to the Cartwright boys faithful devotion to their father and their bravery under fire they demonstrated many times.

Yes, there's often ridiculous plot lines. Like, no way the seasoned thieves would be scared of the threat to burn them out. The place is (inexplicably) still full of things for Virginia City. For the confrontations, everyone has to stand together to be in the single frame. It would be much more difficult to write a plausible story. Ben should have had the gang surrounded by hidden snipers with long guns and the thieves would never ride in as a group like ducks in a barrel. Filming a more realistic disperse confrontation would cost a lot more. I was most disappointed that Ms.Trask didn't have a stronger roll. They introduced her as a tough woman but she spend the majority of the episode as a typical weak sidekick.

The time period for the television series is roughly between 1861 (Season 1) to 1867 (Season 13) during and shortly after the American Civil War. During the summer of 1972, NBC aired reruns of episodes from the 1967-1970 period in prime time on Tuesday evening under the title Ponderosa.

Food in general was more expensive back then because they had no automation. Potatoes had to be dug up by hand, packed, and shipped using horses. Used up a lot more man-hours, and everything took a lot longer. I can build myself a decent table in an hour using my power tools and standard lumber, but back then I'd have to do all that sawing, sanding, joining, etc. by hand, and it would take days. The only thing that was cheaper in the 1860s vs. today was TAXES.

Ben needs a little more shooting practice! :D Ah, he only misses when the script requires it. 42:00 Again?! All that time to prepare and they're using six-shooters instead of long guns?!

Highly disappointed and been in his sons shooting men in the back. They met their match and decided to play dirty, that one action sunk this episode. That's a Lost for the Cawtrights.

Robert Lansing is a terrible, over-bearing, "intense" "actor" who could ruin any scene and has done it many times.People mistake histrionics for acting...

    see?
Again why bonanza is not a great show like Gunsmoke was.....here even with a decent script they still couldn't allow the episode to stand on its own...they just had to make it about a Cartwright..this time old Ben...even after the guy has killed a half dozen people...shot them in the back etc..old Ben says "I think I can reason with him"
lol..bonanza was watched for simple stories...then you shut it off and forget it...Gunsmoke was watched for adult situations that made you think....after you turned it off..

I agree good script but not well finished , I like more the comedic plots because suits well with the lack of quality.
