Storyline:
Originally scheduled to air on March 18, 1961, the Bonanza episode "The Gift" finally made its first appearance on April 1 of that same year. Determined to capture a white Arabian stallion as a birthday present for his father, Joe Cartwright makes a treacherous desert journey to Yuma, Arizona. Attacked by Indians en route, Joe finds that his life is in the hands of Emeliano (Martin Landau), the mercurial Mexican who raised the stallion. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"On a trip to Arizona Michael Landon gets sidetracked buying a white horse as a gift for Lorne Greene's birthday. Landon and Martin Landau fall into the clutches of comanchero chief Jim Davis who really fancies the horse. So in fact does Landau.
The rest of the Cartwrights are looking for Landon on the desert. All the characters meet a destiny on said desert.
Good guest star performances from Landau and Davis." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"This is another one of my favorite episodes.
At the beginning, Little Joe is missing. He had gone off to get a special gift - a horse - for his father. But raiding killed many men and Ben and his sons needed to go find him.
Emeliano and Little Joe worked so hard to try to save this horse. He was so special, in fact, that Emeliano would rather die then see something happen to his horse.
After the unthinkable happens, Little Joe continues on with the gift for his father. But more tragedy strikes. I always cry at the end of this one right along with Joe. It's so special to see the father-son moment in such a unique and un-mocho way. Ben loved his sons more than anything. Nothing would ever stop him from going when one needed him, and likewise. Little Joe's failure to give his father the gift was heart-breaking...But it's like Ben said - he had the best gift in his arms..." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

Boy was this a tear jerker 😢 Ben’s son being alive was the ultimate gift.
Adam’s posture is like someone who reads a lot.
Adam, 'Hand me that towel will ya.' I certainly will so.
The saddest part of the whole story was when the beautiful white horse died. That really made me cry. 😭
This is a wonderful example of Father son relationships, I love it when Big Hoss said what we can't say, and then said we love you pa, and Ben's left eye twitched a few times, and a father's a fool. The best Bonanza episode I've seen thus far. What people don't understand is how important father son's relationships are.
Well said. I thank God for my awesome father and mother, but I'm a woman and I know it's even more crucial for boys to have an awesome father.
It's nice that Ben says "Thanks!" to the Almighty at the end. Don't see that anymore.
From a period perspective it made sense. But now, really? When will we all figure out that we are on own to get through this thing called life. And it is wonderful but there is no one up there looking out for us. It is up to us.
@@rnorth8812 From any perspective it makes sense, with faith all things are possible.

Yeah, movies and shows don't really talk about God anymore.
I love how Hoss puts his hat on before he puts his shirt on.
damn...i missed that....haha
Commitment
Martin Landau is such a good actor.
Love this episode Joe riding that beautiful white horse was just outstanding!
Jim Davis and Lorne Greene squaring off he's my son
The way they used Ben’s shadow was so clever.
What made john Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Terrance hill, Fonda and all other western movies actors more famous than the bonanza actors? To me these actors playing the role of the Cartright characters are world famous western heroes.
Being part of an ensemble makes it less likely that any one man will stand out far above the others. But John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are arguably the two biggest stars in history, so that's a pretty high standard. Personally, I'd still take James Arness over any cinematic cowboy that ever existed.
I love this episode it shows the true loyalty of friends and family it's so sad that we don't have much of that anymore in these troubling times.
To much technology has screwed that up. Put greed ontop of that no turning back.
What seems like was also is, always is, has been, and was. all in the now. We only must accept and apply these values no matter what the resistance. And since we live in America it's only some idiot puppets that feel entitled and life with such these fools up, and pass them by.
That's all due to networks fake media and democratic dictatorship , spreading racism and gay genders hate crimes
Keep the kleenex handy.
So beautiful I don't even know what to say. The most beautiful example of just how much the cartright's love each other!
So you did know what to say..:P
It's episodes like this that really makes u look at the meaning of true friendship and the power of love. The other sad thing of there being cutthroats.
Martin Landaugh had the look 👀 of a bad man but he was such a great actor that he could even make a mean looking 👀 man look 👀 good. 😊😊😊
Love goes far deeper then skin color ever will, because on the inside we are all the same. This episode is such an amazing picture of love, that I just can't get over, no matter how many times I watch it. the only good way to describe what Emeliano did for Joe is what a father would do for his son.
This is an episode I hadn't seen before and Martin Landau really delivered his part as a Loyal Friend. Bonanza had such an array of fine Actors and Actresses. I'm enjoying watching this show again and episodes I missed in my younger years. Thank You!
Adam with no shirt I in heaven
I wouldn't have recognized Jim Davis if not for the voice. He changed quite a bit in the 17 years between this episode and the beginning of "Dallas."
All the horses on Bonanza are beautiful.
🐎🐎🐎
🤠👌🎬🍿
Especially Cochise Joe's pinto
Fantastic episode, did the horse have to die...😢😢 Love the bond and respect between Ben and his boys, absolutely pricesless.....❤❤
This one has brought tears into my eyes. I was fighting against it, but I couldn't help it. So sad, but still with a happy ending.
I'm crying and looking thru comments to see if I have kindred souls here :))
Heartbreaking to see not only Emiliano passing, but this marvellos horse giving his life too, and Joe suffering the loss of both. It not only shows the loyalty among those guys, but of animals giving everything for the humans they´re attached to and vice versa. One of my favorite episodes, though very sad.💔🐎
Well said ❤️💔
I love how Little Joe used his last bullet to save the horse from a long, painful death, even though he knew he was still being chased, and might have needed it for his own defense. I'd give anything for the animals I love too, they've given me so much love and loyalty ❤️❤️❤️
Bonanza I was young and now I
am old I never get tired watching.
🤠👌🎬🍿
Martin Landau had charisma and was so gifted.
It seems that you forget that Michael Landon also worked in the series, and he is a great actor, screenwriter, director, and producer, no one can take that away, even though some do not want to admit it out of envy, anger, or jealousy.
Michael Landon was my favorite when I watched as a kid and is still my favorite now that I’m a senior.
The nerve of those screenwriters to kill off such a beautiful horse...
Didn't see any blood, i think Little Joe missed>>>>>
They should have let the horse live..
America needs more movies, TV series, with Family and friendship , love , morals , instead of VIOLENCE, blood and guts horror movies. There are always gonna be bad people, but love always comes out ahead. BONANZA WAS THE BEST BACK WHEN AND RERUNS ARE THR BEST TODAY. ACTORS WERE A NATURAL, ALL TALENT. KNOWING ITS MOVIE, STILL BRINGS TEARS , FEELING THE LOVE . BONANZA EPISODES ALWAYS TOUCH THE HEART, THE CORE OF WHO WE ARE.
One of the best episodes with a young Little Joe! Thanks for sharing! It's so touching with the end and PA. Love for friendship, family and a great 🐎 horse!
A powerful episode, I can't believe Adam didn't like the script's. They seem pretty good to me, as far as TV goes. And, of course, the cast is top notch.
He liked some of the scripts. The ones he liked he really acted. The ones he didn't, he walked through them. Shame that.
@@rosered103 The scripts were all over the map. Some were well crafted and some were embarrassingly lame, silly or unrealistic. And whatever Pernell said he might do, he never failed to turn in quality, perfectly in character performances as Adam. He was a professional.
As well as thinking he was better than the other three which he certainly wasn’t!
One of the problems Parnell had with the scripts was the fact that it never allowed them to grow up. The had to constantly live with their father in the same house, ask permission for pretty much everything, never allowing them to grow up, get married ,have a family. I'm not sure it would have fixed everything but I think Parnell would have stayed a bit longer to be honest. He also seemed to like scripts that challenged his acting capabilities/delt with hard topics for society like "The Crucible", "Song in the Dark" and "The Dark Gate" episodes like that.
@@NightridewithNikki He didn't care about 'growing up'....he wanted to bring his bizarre leftist agenda to the Ponderosa, and have a Cartwright marry a black woman, or Indian, or some other such buffoonery...The best episodes were almost ALL within the first 3 years....nothing NEEDED to be changed. Least of all to have a handsome man like Pernell Roberts get married to someone who looked like Aunt Jemima...
That is a great Actor! Little Joe, s mate white horse makes to much of a bead on those winchester carbines!
all I can say thank goodness the big white wasn't caring Hoss across the desert.
I got kinda emotional on this one. Very touching!
I never get tired watching all the episode..the script..the acting..the dialogue..are just simply amazing.
One of my favorite episode of little jod
Yes
He ran his heart out for him! Beautiful!
This was a great episode, I love it when all four Cartwrights are in a episode together and Martin Landau is such a great actor, he was my favorite agent (Roland Hand) in Mission Impossible.

@@GrjngoWesternSeries Thanks, will check it out.
Very nice nice ending with Ben looking up to God and saying a simple prayer of thanks.
My all-time favorite episode of Bonanza. It had EVERYTHING.
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

@@DirtyHarryLarryDickman whats so funny
The white horse looks a lot like Silver in "The Lone Ranger."
Hands down the best episode
16:34 the horse ignored the limits of the background canvass. Nonetheless a great episode! :)
I was going to mention that, you can see the top of the set.
This episode reminded me of loving my dad, stepfather in spite of his ignorances, and his tendency to become a belligerent puppet for his insane wife, mom of his children, everything he confessed to her, his vulnerabilities she used against him, mine as well. She was insane, and in the '60s, 70's this wasn't a popular challenge, and he died a drunk because of her, he couldn't get past his construct of once married always married.
@richard Branam thank you for sharing your touching story.
I'm crying here...so touching on many levels.
Love the ricochet sound even when fired in the open.
Way I saw little Joe booking on that white stallion made me think like Ben hur he was
My heart died a little when the horse died.
I can't see this episode without cry like a baby.
Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
What a great actor Martin Landau was.
An amazing start and beautiful ending.
Martin landau playing a Mexican with blue eyes...Lmao 😆
In Mexico, there is basically a caste system.
There are Mexicans who are primarily of European descent who will only marry other very light skinned individuals.
There is a old proverb never love what belongs to other people lovely episode
44:20 the moment he knew he F'd up
I wish it had another end
Love Bonanza!
🤠✌🍿🎬
Im 55. I love this show. Mom and dad watched it all the time. One thing I never understood. They can be dying in the desert but the horses are always fine? This episode is taking that into consideration however.
In this episode Little Joe abandons his pinto Cochise with the comancheros. But somehow she finds her way home!
Notice how levers the rifle before each shot, even though he already did it after firing the last shot.
He said thanks...I wonderful is that.
It was so sad when Little Joe had shoot the be white horse! It was the right thing to do but still so sad! Made me cry 😢
a little production gaff there when the white horse rears up( you can see the sound stage lights and the matte painting at 16:34 top left hand corner)
saw that too
Well, when working with unpredictable animals, you kinda have to go with what you can get. The producers and director probably saw that getting that horse to rear up again was probably a little too much of a long shot, so they just went with what they *were* able to get.
The gift of family love
Good western well played you. All
The Mexican guy picked up the little girl's Raggedy Ann doll and set it by the well.
Raggedy Ann dolls were not invented until 1915. Bonanza was set in the 1860's.
I never catch filming flaws but I caught this one.
Raggedy Ann got transported back in time for this one. Wish I still had mine, she was about the same size as the one in this episode....Maybe it is mine?!
@@user-pd7il3xz5j You mean Model T Fords are older than Raggedy Ann dolls?.
Thank you for answering my question. I too wondered about the doll.
God, family, and thanks to Jesus Christ for our salvation. !!!
I liked this episode. I hated they killed the beautiful white horse. So they leave their horses anywhere, and they find their way back home?
Beautiful story👍 👌👌✌🤩😍🥰😘

Amazing how quickly they caught up with them.

I love this episode. 😢
In 1966, five years after this episode, Martin Landau (1928-2017) would go on to be a full time cast member in the Mission Impossible TV Show.
Rats, I’m so old thank you so much. I was trying to figure out where the hell I saw him that I could’ve googled it but I’m too lazy.
But why did the horse have to die? I am in bits looked so much like my Dee I lost 5years ago. She was almost 30 years old and the love of my life
Thanks❤ God😊
This was a. Sad one i love horses
Always wonder with a story like this , how little Jo gets his Pinto back
Adam felt that the show that made him world famous was beneath him. He left to pursue his career dreams. He didn't like his role or that he played one of the three sons who had to listen to his father. Unfortunately, he is not remembered by anything else he ever did to better his career. I don't think he realized how much he meant to the show and the fans who loved him.
He is remembered as a suburb actor in both theatre and TV and for his work to end racism and sexism. He is remembered for marching with Dr. King from Selma to Montgomery. His role in Trapper John MD is nothing to sneeze at.
@@deborahanntaylor375 Wow didn't know this about Pernell, so being kind, fair, on Bonanza is how he was in real life.
Trapper John MD lasted for a while
That's why the world is in termoil
Loved it❤
This is a great episode. The love of sons and father. The deep felt desire of Emiliano for a son of his own and his reverence for Joe's love for his father makes the later tragedy all the more meaningful. BUT...in Hollywood, couldn't they find any Mexican actors? Why are they turning to Martin Landau? It seemed he thought Mexicans are super excitable, dramatic, and overly emotional.
I still like this episode..but one more criticism....why not use a blood squib when Emiliano gets shot? Even if he had a ketchup packet to squeeze, it would be better than clutching at a gunshot wound that has no blood. Grrrr
Happy to hear you enjoyed it, thanks for watching it! 🤠👌🎬🍿
Martin Landau also played a Mexican on The Big Valley.
Back then they didn't even do the ketchup packet thing, -- they purposely didn't want blood to be shown
If you never noticed before all of Landau's portrayals are "super excitable, dramatic, and overly emotional".
Actually, it’s not really necessary to see a lot of blood and gore like they do in today’s movies and shows. There are a lot of Bonanza episodes that show blood but it’s never over the top. The show didn’t need to emphasize the blood but the action carried the story line without outright gore.
Love this show
REALLY COOL NICE
Martin Landau was on as the commander on the space show where the moon gets knocked out of orbit on Space 1999, I like to see the early career actors and actresses that start on Bonanza.
Love it
One of my favourite episodes
Mr. Ed. He wants to go back to Wilbur.
Hi 🙋♀️ this is a very nice 👍🏻

How could their stomachs handle that dirty water from that mud spot? They never got parasites in their intestines?
It is a shame that Pernell Robert’s was a bit full of himself when it came to acting but I also understand how frustrated he was still beholding to his Pa at his age. Pernell left and and of course when they upset Producers directors etc they make it clear to other people in the film industry not to hire him which is why his career folded. Just as producers have shown recently that to get in the film industry you have to do “special favours”. In a interview I saw with David Dortort when he was elderly he regretted letting Pernell leave and said it made sense for at least one of them to marry and live on the Ponderosa. I think Loren Green would have made a great Grandfather and Michael and Dan good uncles. However he chose to leave and personally I didn’t really miss him he was so moody all the time. The only episodes I saw that he looked really happy was The Hayburner which I understand was his favourite comedy. However I loved Bonanza as a child and now at the age of 67 I have re-watched every episode again to pass away the time during Covid lockdown and brought back many happy childhood memories.
I like that they each have diverse personalities. Since the writers kept them as bachelors, their personalities at least offered the viewer to feel an affinity with whomever you liked.
All of the Cartwrights are loveable, interesting men and Adam was my favorite; level headed, dependable, and capable of discernment....traits of a big brother and a mature person. I like all of that about him and may I add, handsome too. I missed him when he was gone but I understood his reasons for leaving. Grown men ought to have wives or girlfriends, but the the writers/producers for some odd reason didn't want to explore that avenue. Makes no good sense to me. There you have four good hearted, principled, hard working, wealthy, grown men, but not one of them was allowed a long term love interests; just silly.
It is what it is. The formula worked. The object of a winner is to stay top of the ratings and attract advertising. Dan Blocker stated in an interview not long before he passed, that none of the stars thought Bonanza would last so long. Unfortunately the aspirations of individual actors are down the list of priorities.
Pernell did have some success afterwards he was in quite a few episodes of Big valley and Mission impossible. I was sad when he left to but he didn’t seem to mesh all well with the other actors. I don’t know if you’ve seen the big valley but all of those actors meshed well and all had different character personalities. So it depends
I never saw Adam being moody. He was an intelligent, complex and compelling character. Pernell Roberts, to his own chagrin, made Adam immortal.
This episode was written due to the fact that the Paint (Cochise) that Little Joe (Michael Landon) rode in the show was brutally attacked, by someone with a knife, at the stables where he was kept. The horse unfortunately had to be put down due to its injuries.
No one could survive drinking that water........
16:30 ish you can see the edge of the top of the stage when the horse rears up.
