I love what Craig Mazin said in the after the episode thing HBO puts out “Joel makes Ellie feel safer and safer, but Ellie makes Joel feel more and more scared.” That quote perfectly explains this episode.
That's a great way to describe it.
That elderly feller in the beginning has been everywhere in acting. He’s been in a lot of movies and shows since the late 80’s
And the lady was on _Northern Exposure_ and other things.
As someone who's had frequent panic/anxiety attacks... They do in fact feel like a heart attack.
Great great episode. Like every episode so far.
There is a reason why Henry is shown again at the beginning. That was for the fans, because that's exactly how the cut had been made in the game. One shot, then black, then dam.
The reason why Joel doesn't teach Ellie much or let her do it things is that she wouldn't be cargo anymore. Such things create a mutual connection that Joel did not want until then. He doesn't want to give her the option to take care of him. Just like Sarah did back then. I mean she did the housekeeping, made sure he wore his shirt the right way around ect. In this episode, however, he unconsciously refers to her as family during dinner, because she is allowed to stay at the table while he expects Maria to leave. Fortunately, after the quarrel between the two, everything changed.
That the dog notices infections is nothing new. Merci the neighbor dog already did that in episode 1. That being said, dogs also find cancer and other diseases in the body.
The dog here has noticed that something is wrong with Ellie, but he has also noticed that there is no danger from her. Something Fedra's detectors can't detect. They only know black (red) and white (green), just like Fedra is.
Because of Joel's injury. I think that's done far more realistically here than in the game.
You need extreme self-control to leave something stuck in your body that you do not want to have there and does not belong there. The head must remain clear and you must be aware of what is happening to you. Among other things, you first have to be aware that you are in a state of shock. The scene is kept very realistic, also as far that the injury is not immediately noticed. Anyone who has ever severed a finger on a circular saw knows what I'm talking about.
Maria to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust."
Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series.
Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon."
This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. But he does not see this so clearly at the time and still tries to prevent the inevitable.
Ellie drank from Joel's liquor and it was "STILL gross". That was a callback to the DLC "Left Behind" Elli's flashback episode.
Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will properly get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback.
This episode was a feast for everyone who played Part 2. we met Dina, properly Jessie, Shimmer, Bison Bar, sheep, kids playing snowball, Astronauts, Jackson see from the inside. Simply fantastic.
The campfire scene was not in the game, but was originally supposed to be included. So far, only a concept art was left in the bonus material of the game. I think the scene would have been important in the game because it underlines once again that both Marlene and Joel are absolutly sure that it is possible to produce a cure.
Druckman said he can now finally show more through the series than was possible in the game.
Remember episode 3. Fedra rounded up people from towns for Quarantine Zones leaving behind abandoned homes, stores and whole towns. Joel and Ellie would have lots to pick from like Bill did.
The infected wouldn't stay there in empty towns since they can only reproduce among people. That's why they are few of them in rural areas. Unlike the Walking Dead, the infected can't feed on animals.
Why can't they spread the fungus in non-human animals?
6:40 ish when Joel shares his dream after the apocalypse and consoles Elle. Is the first time we see as audiences of him gaining some of his long lost hope. Previously he was skeptical, refusing to believe, or even hope. But after these travels and three months later. Here he is panicking because he has began to dream a life after it all. After everything and what he feels like, too late. A sentiment echoed later by his brother.
I just love they took those moments to share his trauma, PTSD, and anxiety. Something we never got in the game. Joel was always so strong for us. Here we see the vulnerability and soul of a lost, mortal man. ❤
"Guess whos coming to dinner" took me out🤣🤣🤣🤣
Except it didn't apply here or have you forgotten Joel's daughter Sarah, her Black mother and Joel's wife. Joel and Maria don't like each other because she has heard about Joel and Tommy's past of robbing and killing innocent people and Joel doesn't like the fact that he's lost everything while Tommy has a wife a home and a child on the way. He sees Maria as coming between the brothers. Ellie is the one who points out that Maria is using Joel as a way to excuse Tommy and make his murdering not really his fault while Maria is correct when she tells her only those close to us can betray us, which from Ellie's point of view is what Joel does at the hospital at the end of the season.
Unfortunately, as Joel somewhat revealed in his discussion with Tommy life did in fact stop for him right about the time his wrist watch stopped. 😔
Re: the positive test vs the dog sniffing out the infection. We don't actually now what the light-up test they used was testing for. Lots of medical tests don't actually test the thing they are reporting on directly - they're looking for byproducts or signal chemicals that the body releases in response to the infection/disease. PSA testing for prostate cancer is a good example - they don't test for the presence of cancer cells directly, they look at the levels of an antigen produced by the prostate. So whatever the light up instrument is testing for may be some secondary chemical or antibody that is a product of the initial infection, or her body's own immune response to infection. Antibodies would still be produced in the blood stream for months or years after the actual infection was cleared completely, resulting in a false positive test. But if the dog was trained to smell out the actual fungus, after the intervening months her immune system has likely completely cleared her body of fungus so there's nothing left for the dog to smell.
Bella and Pedro killed it in this episode. Give them all the Emmys
The series is going to rake up all of the awards.
I'd argue that Emmys are a joke at this point. Video game stories have been drawing tears for years.
@@traviscue2099 but not TV or movie adaptations... And the Emmys don't cover games. Appealing to video game stories as an argument against the Emmys shows your utter ignorance to the difference between TV and gaming
@@thathighguy6980 huh? The Emmys has always been a joke to film and series alike. No one watches the Emmys anymore.. look at their recent numbers kido.
@@traviscue2099 but that's not the argument you made, is it. Now, go practice some basic reading comprehension so you're not still confused. The correlation you drew, does not exist. The reputation of the Emmys has fuck-all to do with games or their adaptations being absolute shit. Especially since this is the first one that's actually worth a damn
Gram Green was in Dances with Wolves.
The lady playing his wife was also in the great show Northern Exposure, as Marilyn. Very much the same character she plays here.
Dances with Wolves, that's the movie I was trying to figure out.
I would be angry if I was Joel he had to kill and almost died many times trying to find Tommy. Tommy stop talking to him on the radio and he was living comfortably. He didn’t even try to tell his brother or help him get to him safely. I would feel like my brother didn’t give a sh#t about me. Joel has every right to be upset with Tommy.
After I've thought about this for a little while, Joel was absolutely right to be upset. At least for Tommy not trying to reach out.
Yeah, like at least let your only living family know that you're okay and not dead. In the game, at least Joel knew where Tommy was and that they both mutually did not want to see each other again....
@@Syntell he was right to be upset... Yes. But, Tommy was also right in following the camps rules. This is a world where not following the rules leads to you or those you care about ending up dead.
This is also growth for Tommy... He's not just following anymore. He's taken control of his autonomy and built a life of comfort for himself. And to be brutally honest... When it comes to survival, blood means very little. Those actively engaged in your survival are the most important. And it seems like Joel was more critical of Tommy's choices than supportive. He even used follower in a derogatory sense when speaking about Tommy.
So, tldr; I see why Joel is pissed, but also why Tommy made the choices he had to.
This ties into one of them many themes of this show. There are no "good people". Just infinite shades of gray simply trying to survive. If you get lucky, you get to live instead of just persisting until tomorrow. Tommy is living, Joel is surviving
@@thathighguy6980 I guess you can have different perspectives about it, but to me, Tommy was out right wrong for this. He could have just told him I'm ok, but won't be able to reach out and that's it. Wasn't necessary to give out his location or anything. Joel lost Tess because of his irresponsible actions. I understand the rules, but he could negotiate the context of the message with the rest of them and just let Joel know he was ok
@@nodarshurgaia4301 that's what's great. Each and every "side" of the argument is valid. This entire show is a trolley problem
The mountain scenes were shot up here in Canada, near Canmore, Alberta. About an hour from where I live, on the other side of the Rockies. And yeah, it really does look like that here only without the apocalypse. If you ever come up this way, let me know and I'll show you around. 👍
Joel breaks my damn heart
I'm a guy and I recognized the menstrual cup immediately! I didn't even realize most guys didn't know until this ep came out. Nice that this show touches on practical realities like this that most shows in the genre do not.
I'm in my 40's and this is the 1st time I have heard or seen it. Call me ignorant or sheltered. Jajaja But you are right. This show will definitely teach a whole bunch of new men, like myself, about menstrual cup.
41 first time I've ever seen one before and instantly knew what it was. I'm with you in being surprised at how many guys are fully ignorant to these things
@@peace4myheart In my 30s and have never seen nor heard of it before also. You're not alone!
I've seen some reactors confused by it, including at least one woman.
Love your guys reaction and commentary. It’s always insightful and gives me something else to think of I hadn’t already at first glance.
The thing that helps Ellie and Joel is the cold. It slows down bleeding and preserves the body. People can be underwater for an hour and recover if it's ice covered lake.
Unless Joel wakes up and helps, I agree, no way Ellie is getting him back on a horse. That leaves two options:
* She makes some kind of stretcher from a blanket, branches and rope and have the horse pull Joel, CAREFULLY to minimize bouncing and making the wound worse.
* She bundles Joel in a blanket and go get help on the horse as fast as she can aka return to Tommy.
Now, we know how the game plays out and if they want to redo a major plot, we know which option the show will take--which I won't spoil.
Graham Greene is in the movie Wind River, which he mentions as a location in this episode. Absolutely amazing movie. Also thank you for being a genuine reaction channel and not crying your eyes out over the smallest emotional part like so many other channels do.
Thank you for checking us out.
People feel emotions differently. Doesn't mean they aren't being genuine.
@@sarcasmxkate Yeah for sure but you can also tell when people are hamming it up for views/content.
@@coreymagz3145 sometimes for sure. I just try not to assume because the older I've gotten, the more I cry. And not just out of sadness. Happiness, frustration, exhaustion, if something is too cute.... Honestly, it's wild.
@@sarcasmxkate I concur 😂
The heart to heart Joel had with Tommy tore me up! It’s so hard for him to be vulnerable, even with family, it just touched me so much 😭😭😭
Love y’all channel one of the best episodes of the series
It's entirely possible that the dog can detect the fungi infection in Ellie but the dog probably only alerts and attacks threats, so whilst the machines can only detect "infection" or "presence" of some fungi in a binary sense. The dog perhaps with keener senses can differentiate between fungal-rabid human and fungal-immune human.
Maria knows what Joel is capable of and what he and his brother have done, in her mind Joel and Tess are not good people - which they've openly admitted. So I believe her thoughts and moods are concern about what Joel's sudden presence may have on her husband and soon to be father of her daughter, especially since Tommy is a follower with a strong sense of duty to family. She's worried Tommy will fall back into bad habits following his brother's influence.
You didn't mention much differences between the game but I found it interesting that you see the town, which is prominent in the game's sequel but wasn't in the first game, since you meet your brother doing maintenance at the dam. Neil Druckmann in the podcast, however, said that the town was meant to be in the first game but they didn't have the budget or time for it - which they could do here for the HBO series, especially since they know they will be re-using the sets. There were some other future nods to the sequel in the meal scene (the curious girl).
I'd be surprised if they had the ability to determine a baby's sex in utero in this settlement, though.
Can you review The Quiet Place 1 & 2. I have just started watching your reviews and are enjoying the ones I have watched.
This is why this has been the only shooter video game that I like. There are so many video games out there where you can just turn off your feelings and become a killing machine, shooting and killing your way into getting better and better at such violence with no issues, but this game was different. It was created so that you feel remorse for killing, especially the NPCs you don't have to kill. (like most of the dogs) This world is still so far fetched but it to me allows me to feel the way I would feel if this were to really take place. For to many of us, life is worth something and to just kill with no remorse is not in any way desirable.
Y’all made a guess who’s coming to dinner reference but the look he gave was cause he knows She’s the reason his brother stopped communicating through the radio not cause he’s married to a black woman
I appreciate the references to Ellie's menstrual cycle as a mature filmmaking way of saying that people's bodies still work as they should, even in an apocalypse.
However, 99.9999% of human history, there are no tampons, pads, or period cups.
So... women endure and survive.
Women always had something. Just not always as sophisticated as pads. And def not as sanitary
Nature stops for no one. Not even the end of the world. It was a great piece of added perspective.
The answer to periods in human history is pregnancy. Most of human history, poeple didn't last for 50-100 years. People lasted long enough to be parents or possibly grandparents, and that's it. However, life goes on. We manage, apparently.
@@jubilantsleep Free bleeding is/was a thing. For example, Native American tribal culture sequestered their women in special tents for their whole cycle.
I take it you are a man. Not ever talking about a major hygiene problem in post apocalyptic stories has been an issue for 50% of the population of not the audience forever.
I will say id of liked they stay to the game a bit more with this episode but the acting of Eli in this made it work. Love it.
Guard sniffing dog was a ruse. The other party would be panicked how the dog was sniffing all of them for the infected and they would tell on them or run away. The posse would still shoot them.
I could see that as a possibility. I'm still betting that the virus is dormant inside her.
Tommy sucked for not at least telling his brother that he was ok. If he wasn’t gonna go back he should’ve gave a him a heads up so he wouldn’t worry.
"That's not a giant condom???" 🤔🤔🤔🤣
How many guys were asking that very question? Including me.
😂😂
I don't mind the zombies clicking, but when you guys do it, it creeps me out. You are too good at it.
Will you react to the 'Alice in Borderland' series? It's a really good one.
By the way, nice reaction, mate.
This show has given us who played the game those moments where we finally know how it feels like to be the Game of Thrones books readers.
Meaning disappointment at changes?
im assuming they get clothes from the people they kill or find dead
Lol he literally said what he was scared of, why are you guys still speculating about it? He’s scared of getting her killed and failing yet again.
I THOUGHT THAT WAS A NIPPLE BOTTLE THING TOO😂
I'm glad it wasn't just me.
😂😂
Didn’t Jeol get stabbed in the same spot as his daughter got shot?
When I saw the trailer for this episode, I thought it was gonna be a filler episode but it was an amazing episode, great performances from everyone.
The Guess Who's Coming to Dinner comment is ironic considering Joel's daughter was biracial.
I kind of think Joel was the unwanted guest for Maria, so a slight reversal, maybe?
He couldn't send one message to Joel to say he was okay?
