    Ordinarily you'd want to leave the impaling object in, yes. However that getaway high-speed horseride would have turned that shiv into a chainsaw and Joel would have ended up with far more internal damage. Love these reactions!

      Thank you! I’ve watched a lot of reactions to that scene, and the reaction is always the same. While it’s great that it’s become common knowledge to leave intrusive objects in in most cases, you have to stop and ask yourself if required movement in a given situation will make the wound worse.

      At keast they changed it from rusty steel rebar. As bad as the infection risk from that shiv / piece of baseball bat / whatever is, the infection risk from rebar would've been even worse.

  • @arndnaj
    @arndnaj Год назад +10

    Joel has a well earned reputation as being completely ruthless. He did a lot of horrific things. He isn't aware of his reputation, but many are, both Marlene and Tommy even feared him. I don't recall it ever being revealed what he had exactly done, but his reputation is well known.

    • @kaleyrose47
      @kaleyrose47 Год назад +5

      Totally agree. Marlene says to Joel and Tess “I both know what you’re capable of-for better or worse.” Tess: “Joel and I aren’t good people” and “All the shit we did… .” And Tommy and Maria here discuss Joel’s past: from the get go, we know he was dangerous back then, and still has that in him.

    • @Laurel_Ellenstreet
      @Laurel_Ellenstreet Год назад +3

      I think he's pretty aware of it in Boston. I think he may be taken aback at the idea that Tommy would have bad-mouthed him to Maria. The shifting family definitions of that scene! The "us" and the "them". Joel's "them" was, post-Tess, just him and Tommy but he was letting Ellie in. When he wanted a family talk he didn't ask Ellie to leave with Maria. Then he saw that he may no longer be in Tommy's "them" but his defensive mechanisms are desperately trying to suppress acknowledging Ellie.

      @Laurel Ellenstreet I look at it like Commander Shepard's reputation in Mass Effect 3 when she was talking to Admiral Hackett and even in the open sequence of Mass Effect 1. She knows she has a reputation, but it's something she doesn't think about, she's just trying to survive, moment to moment. But much of the settled galaxy knew her reputation, and many knew it was well earned and those that didn't ended poorly.
      Joel is just trying to survive in a world gone to shit, he doesn't have time to think about it. When he and Tess took on Ellie, neither he and Tess even considered their reputation, it was just the next thing they had to do to survive.
      My reputation is a mixed bag as well. To some I'm a hero, to other's a villain, to some a coward, to others fearless, to some a pathetic shell of a human being, to others a decent human being, to others a leg breaking mofo, to some one who helped them through their dark times when everyone else had tucked tail or refused to lift a finger. They're all right, at one time or another in my life. I know of my reputation, I just don't think about it in any given moment, got too much else on my mind.

    The cave scenes are so subtly brilliant! Joel has a pattern (both versions of him) of pushing back when his defenses are triggered ("So it's WE?") and then later, especially seeing the emotional impact, quietly changing his behavior ("sheep farm on the moon", uniting their future visions) without openly acknowledging that he was being distancing. Foreshadowing his later, bigger changing of his mind. The cave scene also shows that the more the bond grows, the more they are misaligned (Ellie wants to make Joel proud, he wants to protect).

    The ending song is a cover (by Jessica Mazin, daughter of the showrunner Craid Mazin) of Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again" - the same song that plays (in its original 1987 version) on Tess/Joel's apartment radio at the end of the pilot, and turns out to be Bill and Frank's death notice. On the podcast Mazin talked about shifting to an Ellie-centric narrative so this cover in a very different style.

    A great reaction/breakdown of the episode. Wanted to mention I love the touch of having Ellie obsessed with space, that was put into the show by the showrunners because Ashley Johnson (voice/mocap of Ellie in the game) is a huge space nerd.
    The confrontation in the bedroom was one of the most important scenes they had to recreate from the game, and they nailed it perfectly. Almost completely 1-for-1 copy, while still feeling natural for Bella and Pedro.
    The song at the end was a cover of the Depeche Mode song from the end of episode 1 (Never Let me Down Again), sung by show runner Craig Maizin's daughter.
    Jackson was filmed in the town of Canmore here, and is an excellent place to visit. Only problem is that it was already busy with tourists and now even more so with the influx of Last of Us fans.

    I was riding horses back in the day and I can tell you, abdominal movements while riding a horse are huge. So if he'd ride that horse implaled by that wooden stick, he would die of pain and much more internal trauma than he received just by the impaling itself.

    Something to consider when Joel pulls out the part of the baseball bat that stabbed him is that in the GAME he actually falls onto a piece of rebar that skewers him. The reason I believe they made him pull it out in the show is because in the game they have to pull him off of the rebar rubble and there is no choice to leave it in as they have to escape.

    Would not pulling the splinter out matter anyway since Joel's not able to get any immediate medical treatment? I'm no doctor but I thought in cases like these, you were supposed to be laying down still and wait for an ambulance, which wasn't at all possible for Joel. The raiders were after them and he needed to get on a horse. Not to mention how bumpy the ride would be which would make the splinter damage other organs if Joel didn't pull it out.

    It's hard to open up when you don't feel safe. Joel hasn't had a place to feel safe for decades, and he gets to Jackson, and he starts to feel safe, and doesn't know how to handle it. That's still a terrifying prospect. You don't feel safe to be vulnerable, then you find a safe place and you don't feel safe being vulnerable. It's a terrifying irony.

  • @Dark__Thoughts
    @Dark__Thoughts Год назад +3

    Yes, Sarah' didn't had that potty mouth but she and Ellie are quite similar in that they're pretty smart and cheeky, but also kind. Ellie reminds Joel a lot about Sarah, and the closer he grows to her, the more his PTSD & fear of losing her flares up. He bottled it all up for 20 years and secluded himself from everyone, and now he's forced to actually process his trauma, which is something he blames more himself for, rather than whoever ordered the soldier to do what he then had to do.
    It was the bat that broke on the tree. Joel rammed it kinda into him by himself when he tackled the guy. And not to berate a doctor, but I don't think it's that good to leave a splintered or sharp object inside of you when you're riding wildly on a horse & living in a post apocalyptic world in the middle of nowhere. At that point I think the risk of damaging internal organs is worse than the bleeding. If you're lucky and didn't require internal stitching then you really want to make sure it stays that way when there's no way to operate you.
    In the game this scene is way worse and more unrealistic btw, as Joel gets tackled by a raider on the inside balcony of the science building and ends up falling onto a pile of rubble, which has a piece of rebar sticking out, which completely impales him. (YT ID: /watch?v=CwYZdSUtMDM)

    Remember the dog Mercy from episode 1. He could feel infections. The same thing happens here with Ellie, but the dog doesn't attack her. Ellie was diagnosed with a detector as infected by the red light in episode 1. The little boy from episode 2 was also tested with red and killed instantly. Now imagine how many potential immune people were killed because of this detector because there was no dog. A combination of both would therefore be better and might have led to the discovery of immunes. Instead, everyone was killed. If you think about that, everything becomes much darker.
    In an apocalypse you pull out the stick and hope for the best, because there are no doctors and no help, only people who want to kill you and your stuff. If Joel leaves the stick stuck, he can't even get up on his horse and he can't ride it at all. Besides, the longer it gets stuck, the more likely it is to get infected with something, right?
    In our world, of course, you have to leave everything in, but there are also doctors and hospitals.

    • @JessTheMD
      @JessTheMD  11 месяцев назад

      You make an excellent point! Makes me wonder! Dogs *should* have been used for truly infected diagnosis. That would have been cool, but maybe made for a less intense story line. Though they might’ve found a cure/vaccine sooner 😉
      Someone else had mentioned the idea of “getting rid of” those raiders (well, David’s hunter party) entirely, and then managing Joel in a bit more of a controlled environment. Though I don’t think Ellie was capable of offing 3 big dudes at that point, and Joel was (obviously) injured. The spike would totally have macerated his insides while they rode the horse; but at the same time, I’m shocked he didn’t totally bleed out from that wound. Sucky sucky situation… but he did survive (miraculously lol) so that’s great 😝

    There's some debate about the benefits of removing the splintered bat handle in this scenario. In normal circumstances you'd be absolutely right about leaving it in there, but climbing on to a horse and then needing to gallop away changes things.
    There's an argument it would splinter and shred his insides, so it's possible he might have actually done less damage to himself by taking it out before hand. He's pretty much screwed either way in this environment though.

    Another great reaction. One small counterpoint to the advice about Joel's stab wound, it there was no way to stabilize it before trying to escape on horseback. Given the jaggedness of the broken bat, could there be more damage caused from riding on a horse with that still in the wound? Just asking for a friend... 🙂(Joel)

    • @Martyntd5
      @Martyntd5 Год назад +3

      Yeah, that's a tough call. Always leave it in ...providing you can immobilise the cas and get em to hospital in a stable state, but that isn't happening here. There are no hospitals and no doctors, Joel aint going nowhere and that stick has to come out one way or the other. Bouncing around on a horse with a lump of jagged wood inside you, might well do more harm that pulling it. Certainly if you just leave it there, he will die. So circumstances here suggest pulling it and hoping for the best, with an understanding that he's probably gonna die, versus definitely gonna die if you leave it in. Not a good choice.
      A better choice would have been to shoot the other 3 men, then stay at the university and try fixing Joel up there where there is equipment, resources and maybe even antibiotics and you could pull the bat out under reasonably controlled conditions.

      Completely agreed! In a field medicine situation with them having to be on the move on a horse after, yes it totally makes sense to take it out because of the damage it can do with it moving around in there. Ideally - you don’t take it out, you stabilize it and then get emergency medical care…. But these circumstances are certainly different! I like your third idea of leaving it in, getting rid of the guys coming to kill them and then figure out plans for next steps! 😊

I want so badly to see a show/game about Joel & Tommy from after Sarah's Murder until Tommy leaves the Fireflies. 8:44 Blink and you might miss it, In episode 4 Joel tells Ellie "no your Cargo". Here Joel is at least subconsciously including Ellie into the Family Umbrella of him and Tommy. 12:43 Not in this clip but the memorial is telling Kevin was only 3 years old and was killed 2 days after Sarah's Murder.

      The memorial also confirms Sarah was 14 when she died, Ellie's current age. By the end of KC day 1, Ellie's at least "precious cargo" and on the way out of KC she's "you're not cargo but I'm going to suppress this realization." The two Joel actors have different comments on when Joel first cares personally about Ellie. We see TV Joel show concern for her well-being early but, this could be just the automatic in loco parentis mode of an experienced parent around other people's kids. Pedro says the personal bond starts when Ellie calls Joel out at the start of episode 3, saying he and Tess chose to get involved for their own reasons, and he doesn't get to blame her. Joel then realizes, she's right, I'm being an AH and I don't have to be that guy. Troy Baker says his Joel cares from the minute he sees her but of course must suppress the frightening realization that he's still a dad, those instincts aren't gone.

    Everyone always says Joel shouldn't have removed the object from his wound. Of course that would be true in a normal situation, but it's not as if Ellie could call 911 and wait for Joel to be transported to the local trauma center for a CT scan and surgery. They had no medical care available and no way of removing it in a controlled environment. If it was such that he was going to die from it being removed, he was going to die anyway..

Someone else commented that another option would have been *getting rid of* the guys that were coming after them, and then having a bit more of a controlled environment and no getting on the horse immediately. 13:52 Maybe I am being cynical but her telling Ellie "The only people who can betray us are the ones we trust" is along the line of Smeagle telling Frodo that Sam wants the ring. This one has been on the attack of Joel stating "There are clearly things your don't know about him". She has been intent on planting seeds of distrust in Ellie about Joel.

    • @Dave3Dguy

      Tommy has probably processed some stuff with Maria and may be an unreliable narrator to her. But she first makes the pointed comment about reputation before the relationship is known. And it makes sense to try to get a feel for Ellie's safety by checking in with Eliie. But she could have done it a lot more diplomatically, and probably gotten a better dialogue going instead of Ellie immediately seeing her as antagonistic. Even saying "I'd check in with anyone in your situation to make sure they feel safe, and know they have options. it's nothing personal."

    Just one addition to what others have said. Tommy exaggerates aka lies to make himself look better to Maria and others such as when he says he can shoot and kill infected at a ridiculous range with his rifle. From what we have also seen of the brothers so far - Tommy killed first (the soldier who shot Sarah without any warning) and he was in Desert Storm. He also convinced Joel to join the group that quite definitely sounds like raiders going up to Boston from Austin.
    Tommy is not a good guy in contrast to Joel at all.
    My comments are based on the series not the video game that apparently frames Joel as a much more ruthless man. For example I doubt game Joel would offer an option to the sniper in Kansas City to just put down his gun and leave.
    This dichotomy is a source of many disagreements in the comments.
