I listened to this a LOT when I lost my mother, sister and father within six months of each other and I was going through a divorce too. I felt so completely alone and their deaths were devastating to me. I had my kids, but I couldn't lay my burdens on them. They were just kids. So I would just drive and play this song as loud as possible. We have no control over death, but it still leaves you sad and angry. Music was definitely my therapy back then. This song was part of my therapeutic process. I still listen to this song. Even before I lost my family, this song was one of my favorites by Offspring.
To you ma'am I'm going to say my thoughts and prayers are with you. I lost my father and sister within 2 months. I can understand those feelings. I'm not married I can't identify there. But if you have your children, turn to them and love on them as much as possible. Be an amazing mom to them. And any really close friends you have lean on them when you need to. If they're true friends they'll be there.

The Offspring are truly one of the if not the most underrated bands of the 90’s/2000’s. The lead singer Dexter has a PHd in molecular biology and they are all big brains that just got together and made AMAZING music! Check out “gotta get away” next.

its interesting how she embraces some music. But I can understand what shes trying to say, some songs you focus on the lyrics, others the instrument(s), and other songs ill focus on the tone or emotion. Like when you listen to a song thats in a different language, you dont know the words but we eventualy develop a perception of our own making with the song. "flowers on your grave" = death of loved one, "world has grown cold now that you've gone away" = death of loved one, "I reach to the sky and call out your name" = death of loved one, "if I could trade, I would" = death of loved one, "it feels like heaven's so far away" = death of loved one. The interesting thing about this song is that they came up with it because they didn't have a song about the topic and wanted to try their hand at it. The myth growing up was that he lost his wife/gf in a car accident. Regardless, the raw emotion and feeling of loss definitely came through for me.

I have to correct the rumor that Dexter Holland this song about a loved one who had died (usually his wife/girlfriend) which a couple other commenters mentioned. Even though he previously would not elaborate on the exact meaning of the lyrics, I heard a radio interview with Dexter (I think recorded earlier this year) in which he decided to relate what prompted him to write the song. He and his wife were at a convenience near where they live and while they were in line, a couple ran in screaming to call the police because someone had been following them in their car threatening to kill them. A car with "gang members" then pulled up and a guy got out and started shooting at the store, sending bullets through the large front windows. As everybody scrambled to find cover, he and his wife tried to hide behind a trash container and he threw himself on top of her to prevent her from getting shot. He remembered thinking "I'm gonna get shot any second" as the bullets were flying everywhere. Luckily no one was shot (he suspected the shooter purposely shot above the people just to scare them) and the car with the shooter drove off, but the event really made him think about loss and he would feel if his wife had been shot and killed and he wrote this song within a few days.

This song is special to me. My dad died young almost 19 years ago and I make it a point to visit his grave every Father's day and his birthday. Somehow, this song ends up playing on the radio every time I make that trip. Even 19 years after his death and 24 years or so after the song's release

The interesting thing about this song is that they came up with it because they didn't have a song about the topic and wanted to try their hand at it. The myth growing up was that he lost his wife/gf in a car accident. Regardless, the raw emotion and feeling of loss definitely came through for me.
There are a few songs that I don't realize I have subconsciously avoided since my dad died. Whenever I see one being reacted to, I still don't grasp the fact that I've been avoiding it. Just like before, I'm sitting here with tears running down my face because I miss him, but haven't dealt with my emotions yet. Four years and two months and I still don't want to believe it.....

that's weird, because the three or so interviews I've read about it, he said he just wrote a song, there was no specific incident or situation that led up to it.

My brother was killed in 1997 at 27 when this song came out. I couldn't listen to it without loosing it. I still do sometimes. It was eerie because the words were saying exactly what was going on with me.

The Crue all these local bands get depressed... Broke... Saw rockers drinking and overdosing themselves to death... It was dark af.... But the hair bands were posers ... Cookie cutters.... I have to correct the rumor that Dexter Holland this song about a loved one who had died (usually his wife/girlfriend) which a couple other commenters mentioned. Even though he previously would not elaborate on the exact meaning of the lyrics, I heard a radio interview with Dexter (I think recorded earlier this year) in which he decided to relate what prompted him to write the song. He and his wife were at a convenience near where they live and while they were in line, a couple ran in screaming to call the police because someone had been following them in their car threatening to kill them. A car with "gang members" then pulled up and a guy got out and started shooting at the store, sending bullets through the large front windows. As everybody scrambled to find cover, he and his wife tried to hide behind a trash container and he threw himself on top of her to prevent her from getting shot. He remembered thinking "I'm gonna get shot any second" as the bullets were flying everywhere. Luckily no one was shot (he suspected the shooter purposely shot above the people just to scare them) and the car with the shooter drove off, but the event really made him think about loss and he would feel if his wife had been shot and killed and he wrote this song within a few days.

This song is great for getting over the loss of someone. Got me through the death of a few friends that went way to soon. Driving with the song blasting and singing at the top of my lungs with tears in my eyes is the best release for me when grief starts to overwhelm. Great song, thanks for doing a reaction to it.

Lex's vibe was picking up on frequencies again. I was just telling a friend the other day, that when I listen to music, its usually never about what the lyrics mean for me, but my "intuition" picks up the vibration of the energy of the song. Just like picking up on vibes from people. I completely understand Lex's analogy.
