No matter how sad the song is, the music is so upbeat. "Gone away" is another great example. One of the saddest songs ever, but the music is happy.
I’m not a huge 5FDP fan but I appreciated their cover of Gone Away because it made the lyrics sink in.
At Aftershock 2021 he played it slow and sad. Times have changed and instead of lighters people had their cellphone flashlights on. It might be available on RUclips if you look for it.

Try Unwritten Law - Teenage Suicide.
@A R whoa, I got curious about the cover, just checked it out and yep, totally agree (though I've never heard about 5FDP before; but just by reading the abbrev. seems like a brazilian way to abbrev. "five sons of b--" and so I was WAY curious lol)
The lead singer of the Offspring is Dexter Holland. This guy is super smart. He graduated from high school a valedictorian, and then got a Bachelors degree in Biology, a Masters degree in molecular biology, and then, after getting famous in the Offspring, he took some time off from the band to get a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Holland was a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Proteomics Research, at the Keck School of Medicine, and he has published papers about HIV.
Old Offspring will always be the best, no disrespect to this album cuz I do like it as well but "Smash", " Ixnay on the Hombre", "Ignition", and their first self titled album are classics
Americana is to The Offspring as The Black Album is to Metallica
@@mikethemotormouth 😄Yes perfect example, thanks
Ixnay on the Hombre - Best album ever!
Jennifer Lost The War!
Yes yes yes Ixnay On The Hombre and Smash jeeez such memories
The Offspring have so many great songs. What I love about punk is the juxtaposition between the music and the lyrics. on the surface, it sounds fast and positive but it nearly always dark and unsettling. Take a song like Last Caress by The Misfits (horror punk) - it sounds so upbeat and happy that for a lot of people it totally flies under the radar of how twisted it is. The Ramones are also a must listen if you guys are diving into this genre. They are legends.
Same for Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Suicidal Tendencies
"Bad Habit" was the best song from Offspring when I was growing up. Gotta check that out
Man this song hits with me. On my street there were 10-15 kids who all grew up hanging out. Up through high school. Now id say half of them have passed away. Its crazy how growing up we just accept the losses as they come.
And im not that old at just 37.
this song still resonates with me at 36 that opening riff always catches my attention. I loved the official music video as well.
36? 54. I bought the album when it came out and this song is still in my epic list.
Offspring is such a fun band... try these:
"Self esteem" - " original prankster" - "pretty fly (for a white guy) " - "come out swinging"- hit that.
I saw Pretty fly (for a white guy) is already recommended in the comments and I am sure you will crack the f up if you check it out. It's hilarious. Want to add Self Esteem to the Offspring playlist just because it's amazing and incredibly nostalgic for me. Lot's of love guys!
If Pretty Fly gets viewed, guys must watch the video even if we don’t get more than a screenshot. Not one to check live or whatever.
anything off smash is a banger that album is still one of my favorites to this day
Nice...I remember a pretty funny song from them..."Pretty Fly...For a White Guy"....great video too!!
Nice! This and “Self-esteem” are in my “Soundtrack of life”! 🧡💛💚💙🤘🏻🔥
It's about as kids we run around with bright eyes for the future but when reality and adulthood hits, life can be cruel and swallow so many lives. How things change from child to adult and the reality of life.
Despite being a fan of this band for many years, I only finally got to see them live just a few weeks ago, fantastic gig!
The video for this track is totally worth checking out as well. It's artistic, clever, poignant, ugly and beautiful all at the same time, and it's probably one of my favourite music videos I've seen.
Just joined on patron glad to be able to support your awesome work fellas🙌🙌🙌🙌
If you'd like a reaction pop it on the suggestion thread and they'll get to it.
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head there's a new suggestion thread from last week. But otherwise what Steve says.
Love this song and that guitar riff always gives me such Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes
This song is such a universal appliance to every generation. This was released in the late 1990s and I've experienced the same things mentioned in the song today. Being Class of 2020, we didn't have a proper graduation not did we even really finish school. During that time, I had enough time to get my things together and planned to move to Arizona from Washington for Audio Engineering school. It went pretty well for me, a few hiccups but it was generally alright.
I then moved to LA to start my internship. After I finished that, I felt rather successful in my career and that it was going somewhere. When I went back home to Washington for a visit, however, I noticed how grey the city felt. I attempted to get in contact with a bunch of my friends, but only a few responded and they told me of many of then that had fallen info obscurity, a few started doing drugs, and a couple committed suicide, one of them was one of my closest friends who was the guitarist in my first band from Middle school.
This shit is real and when I heard this song after my trip, I almost cried over how accurate it was that I almost crashed my car while listening and tearing up.
Honestly this song is so true for every group of friends who grew up together
I remember this song! Haven't heard it in forever. Thanks guys
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love how open minded you guys are. I wish everyone was like that.
Oh wow, this is straight out of my childhood. Love me some of The Offspring. Walla Walla was a favorite too.
man, the memories this song brings back....
You need to do more episodes on the offspring because this is an amazing band with a punk sound.
The song is about the viewpoint of being a kid growing up with ambitions and dreams, but then making that transition into adulthood and finding out those hopes were never a guarantee and that the harsh truth of reality can simply destroy lives that were once so pure.
As a senior in high school, I had a teacher leave for a week to return home for his own class reunion. It was kind of novel, being seniors ourselves and knowing that we'd one day be doing the same. When he came back though he was a bit disheartened. We were his first class of the day after he'd returned and he sat down with us and told us all to take life for all it is worth, and never take for granted the people around us because there will come a time when they just won't be there, and it will hit you like a brick wall. He'd been to several reunions and had noticed a trend that each year fewer and fewer people would show up for any number of reasons. Sickness, incarceration, death, or any number of things. It was certainly something to hear as a teenager who thought they were invincible with all of life ahead of them. I still remember that talk. Here's one for the teachers who actually kept it real.
The Offspring are still great, I went to their show in November and they smashed it!
I see what you did there 😏
I think this song is more about a good neighborhood turned bad. “When we were young the future was so bright / The old neighborhood was so alive / and every kid on the whole damn street / was gonna make it big in every beat”
but the very next segment is “Now the neighborhood’s cracked and torn / the kids are grown up but their lives are worn / how can one little street / swallow so many lives”. And then the next verse is where they talk about suicide, ODs, etc.
So, I don’t know. Some kids from a decent neighborhood who got involved with the wrong people, and went down the wrong paths. Got addicted to drugs, and just did a bunch of generally “live fast” shit without any care for the future or any guidance from anyone to prepare them for the real world. Maybe their parents just weren’t around enough. Maybe it was just one “bad apple” that got into drugs and sucked everyone else in. Or maybe the town they lived in just went downhill altogether. It’s hard to say.
But the general message, I think, is that, yeah, they just weren’t prepared for the real world when the time came to go out there, so they just made a bunch of bad decisions because they didn’t know what the good decisions were. It’s happening more and more often as time goes on. No one knows how to raise children anymore. Sad as fuck.
And some people should flat out never have children. But yea.. growing up hits you and you look back and see how everyone's lives changed when it was all so simple when you were a kid. I don't personally know anyone who's overdosed, but know like 6 people around my highschool days that committed suicide. I think someone having a kid in highschool is pretty much common in every highschool... But my school was considered good, now that I'm 32, they've had gang fights, knives brought to school, someone set off legit smoke bombs inside the school.. The kids are definitely not alright..
Pay the Man is a really good song on that album! Also Americana and The End of the Line.... pretty much the whole Americana album is fire. You definitely gotta give it a listen! I remember listening to this cd when I was a kid back when pretty fly for a white guy came out.
This album is iconic. My friends loved it at the time. I wasn’t super crazy about it, but now I listen to it and it feels so nostalgic.
The combined realization at the whoa oh! Made my day
Always takes me back to the movie "The Faculty", first time I heard this song.
I'm thankful to have been a teenager in the 90s in southern ca. Tons of us were/are into punk.
Offspring " Amazed" is a killer song (it featured on one of the first "Crusty Demons" motorcycle videos). Please do a reaction to it.
'Pyro' by The Offspring...early days when they were a genuine punk band, before the commercial ballads and cheesey radio hits. Hits like a brick, you'll love it!!!
Gone Away by The Offspring 🤟
Fun fact: the lead singer is Dexter Holland, PhD. He has his doctorate in molecular biology. Check out Pretty Fly For A White Guy and/or Gone Away. Good stuff!
Dudes, you GOTTA check out the video. The visuals are outstanding.
Fun fact about the lead singer that not many people seem to know: He's completed a PhD in microbiology and is now one of the leading rsearchers in the world trying to actually *cure* AIDS
Had to go Google that, holy shit I had no idea. That's cool, good on him.
Indeed Dexter Holland is a dude with a brilliant mind
SAMIAM is a very underrated 90s alt-punk band. Dull, Simca, Bad Day, While You We’re Waiting, some great songs
O . C. Guns . Dirty magic🔥🔥🔥
love the cat meme at the start of this one, because i was getting ready to comment that the offspring are my cat Olaf’s favorite band. no joke, he can be passed out in another room and if i hit play on any of their songs, he comes running in to the room and stares at the sound bar til i turn it up 😂 once i do, he plops down and gets comfy right there until i turn the music off 🤘🏻💜
Cool band great tune with a punk influence....dig deeper for old punk like Dead Kennedy's....Bad Brains...Plasmatics.
My old band played with them at Gilman St in Berkeley, Ca a few times, nice guys, cool song, but i'll take Decedents for my Pop-Punk
All of us in the 90s listen to this album this on this band what a great way to do this Behringer thank you very much thank you Smokey reminds me of my childhood thank you thank you well not my childhood moving more like my medium adult I guess had to be in my twenties
The offspring was the 1st band I got to see live in concert when i was a teen in late 90s. And I even went right to the middle of the mosh pit.
The Offspring just like Green Day, Blink-182 and all the others you mentioned is pop punk. The classic punk movement that went on was in the late 70s/early 80s and included bands like Sex Pistols, The Clash or The Damned in the UK or Ramones, Dead Kennedys or Misfits in the US. In the early days there was only punk rock as a genre but over the years there were several subgenres that evolved from that like hardcore punk, crust punk, fun punk, horror punk, ska punk and much more. Pop punk was probably the most popular since it was the one that had the most commercial success. Nevertheless it's just one subgenre of a genre that has much more to offer throughout it's existence of over 40 years now.
Sadly they are Pop punk. But I always say they are punk rock just to please my mind
One Fine Day is great punk/Offspring satire. And a great song. Keep doing Offspring
Oh. MY. GOD.
PLEASE do some older Offspring. They are AMAZING live. But just plain AMAZING. GONE AWAY, GOTTA GET AWAY, COME OUT AND PLAY... And the best damn road rage song you'll ever hear, BAD HABIT!
It's so awesome to see Dexter Holland leader of an badass punk band has a PhD in molecular biology, man is a scientist that decided to be a punk singer
This brings me back to jr high and high school being an outcast
7:57 Smoky had some sort of war flashback or something right there. I think he made the realization.
The Offspring are what's known as Skate Punk, which is pretty much a less political (and much more White) version of Punk, similar to Pop Punk but it was much more in line with the original attitude of Punk Rock than Pop Punk was. Blink 182 is another example of Skate Punk, but they also have a large crossover into Pop Punk.
I would suggest going a bit back and react from spmething from the Smash album which was what put The Offspring on the map
Offspring is one of my favorite punk bands, they have so many bangers especially from the ‘90s era. Great reaction!
Remember twelve foot ninja? Theyre new album is sick. You could check the song over and out wheres tatjana from jinjer featuring :)
The Americana album cover is an offspring fans favourite music video. Want you bad and pretty fly we're funny though xD
First time I heard this song I was 8 years old watching the movie "The Faculty", which had the absolute most bitchin' soundtrack. Instantly became an Offspring fan
i always call this funpunk.. want a nice driving song?? bad habbit is awesome..:)
How did I miss this!!!!!!!!!!? Finally. Great song choice.
This bad is great!!! Fun trivia fact…. the lead singer Dexter Holland has a PhD in Molecular Biology.
Awesome song.Awesome reaction and commentary. Just Awesome 😁
I think a lot of the south listened to everything. My friends listened to rock, metal, rap and a little country. I lived in south Alabama for a bit and it was the same way, just add more country music.
🦋Offspring has so many great songs. Some That Were Featured In Movies As Well. I Love All Their Songs The Entire Smash Album, Yea I played it A lot In 94'' the year it was Released. Ah...Those High School Years. I Have Never Been Dedicated To Only One Genre Of Music. I Genuinely Love it all. I was always turning my friends onto new music. And Now Me & My Sister Keep That Tradition Alive. Gone Away, Leave It Behind, I Choose, All I Want, & Amazed, Off Of The Ixnay On The Hombre Album are Amazing Songs. As Well As This One, Pretty Fly For A White Guy, & Staring At The Sun, Off Of the Americana Release. They Are Top Favorites Of Mine. Great Song Choice & Review Guys! Looking Forward To More Future Offspring Reactions!
Early Offspring is definitely part of the few good high school memories I have - I still listen to their early stuff 💜
Punk is one of my favorite genres of rock and these guys are one of my favorite punk bands this album is my favorite album of theirs and this is my favorite song on the album. Rise against is probably my most favorite punk band other than the offspring
My childhood album!
“My brother gonna f you up
my sister gonna bust ya head “
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Some of my cousins grew up in Rockdale so I know exactly what you're talking about.
I love the friendship you guys have, nothing like sharing the love of music.
You need to react to Bushes Sixteenth stone album!!!!!!!!!! It’s amazing!!
“He has a voice though”…. Dexter has THE voice of 90s-2000s alt rock
Love the videos guys. I was at the Amway center for Tool also!!!
Yall should listen to "Gone away" by the Offspring. We lost a good friend in high school to suicide. RIP Leslie. We all Dedicated this song to her, and all others who committed suicide. Yall really need to hear it and feel it.
Thanks for the videos, keep them coming. PEACE ✌️
You should do some songs from Smash, their best album by far, gem all along!
They would love Bad Habit no doubt
@@mikethemotormouth Oh absolutely!
@@mikethemotormouth the song about road rage
@@jasonjtd79dunne88 thank you Captain Obvious
Top 5 The Offspring best song (my opinion) :
1. The kids aren't alright
2. Can't Repeat
3. Come out and play
4. Pretty fly
5. Hit That
Yep. In high, punk would be frowned upon for whatever reason... until you hung out with punk music lovers outside of school - opinions would change.
A good punkabilly track would be 'Prisoner of Society' by Living End (the Australian version is way better).
Also Tiger Army's Incorporeal
Another great punk band is Face to Face and The band The Casualties
This is one of my favourite songs of all time ! The offspring are amazing , No matter the song I always end up smiling and laughing once it’s finished
The way your faces light up upon recognition is amazing. Music is the most powerful force known to man, in my opinion.
And I used to skate to this song with a pair of cheep headphones and a discman.
Such a great song
Blink-182 was more of pop-punk/skatepunk but punk nonetheless. Green day falls into about the same category. both bands essentially selling out in their later years. Chesire Cat by Blink is still one of the best albums.
Yall HAVE to check out Bad Religion! i suggest listening to I Want To Conquer The World and Modern Man. Punk songs are a bit shorter but get their point across every time
Love this song, came out when I was in my late teens/early 20's and is so relatable.
Yall should check out streetlight manifesto if you want a fun rabbit hole to go down
The Offspring - Smash is one of the best albums ever created (specially if you ignore the 2 mainstream commercial hits from that album, that are still legit tbh)...
You guys should listen to 40 Below Summer's "Relapse" especially Hollywood. It as you can tell deals with a subject we both have an experience with. Amazing song. Then listen to "Rain" that has some badass drums in it.
React to The Offspring - Have you ever & Pay the man .
Pay the Man is a jam!
Blink 182 was definitely punk, but they were pop punk, so was Green Day, Offspring was more punk than pop, but their thing was that their songs were anthemic and epic.
I'm loving Hollywood's Breakfast Club storytime at the end of this video. I absolutely believe he hung out with the emos for one whole week and it almost ruined his and his step sister's lives.
I’ve always wanted to make a proper prequel to nightmare on elm street where Freddy is not burned. I’d call it Elm street and the trailer would have a creepy slowed down version of this song
Songs about when they went back home as adults and found out how the other kids from their neighborhood turned out. The kids aren't alright.
such different things: listening and enjoying a song versus paying attention to its production and lyrics, right? lol
Actually The Offspring started on the indie punk label Epitaph and blew up on Epitaph
You have to check out the lead singer. Just look at his RESUME lol
Such a great song. And the actual video has like 171 million views
Punk wants to be looked down upon. That's its point.
Another fave high school band! 🖤 the skate scene, just too damn clumsy! Fave album was Smash. & there's plenty of songs from it for y'all to ck out!!
Self Esteem, Come Out & Play, Genocide, & more! Listen for the snippets of Carlin!!
Also, Gone Away & all-time fave song, Defy You!!!!!!!!
You guys should react to Fuel- Shimmer. One of the most underrated bands of the late 90s
Yes.
@@stephanieb.8270 They had a new music videos 6 moths ago but sadly Brett Scallions isn't singing.
Rappers are to music as snuff films are to cinema.
Love ya guys. Would also love to see yall do Nanking by Exodus. It's about the Japanese occupation of China in 1937. History lesson in a song. But be ready to be appalled. The shit in the song actually happened.
Love the story telling. Atl is so diverse. Grew up listening to country to rock to hip hop and everything in between on the southside Atl.
Punk of the time of The Offspring is looked down upon because it got popular and they were given the label of "pop" punk. I do love me some pop punk! Here's to you checking out more in the future!
