I think the upbeat tone is almost the "fake forced smile" representative of the suburban melancholy of the 90s.
Grin and bear it, right?
yeah exactly, it was all about being sarcastic lol
You are spot on, Ross Trent.
You are spot on, Ross Trent.
yup 100% - that plus this song just F-ing ROCKS!
"What the hell is going on? The cruelest dream, reality" Is such a great quote from this song.
Brutally accurate
Great song and lyrics. This was a banger
Another awesome line in one of their songs is “If words were wisdom, I’d be talking even more”
The Offspring are great. "Self Esteem", "Gone Away" and "Defy You" are all worth a listen.
Self Esteem, or Come out and play are MUSTS.
I will never forgive five finger fruit punch for what they turned "gone away" into
Gone Away is still one of my favourite songs of all time, even though I haven't really listened to the band in over a decade. Then there's Pay the Man, which is just... it's hard to believe it's even the same band.
If you guys listen to more Offspring, you’ll get it and this song would be more interesting to you. If you don’t like parts of this song and his voice, you’ll alienate yourself from liking and appreciating a whole genre that is amazing! “Come Out And Play” is the one because that’s the mainstream hit.
"Gone Away" is one of the greatest songs of all-time by ANYONE. It's an absolute masterpiece.
1. In my personal opinion, I feel like his voice adds a bit more credit to the song being a tale of youth. I think if someone with a more refined voice sang this, it would feel more like an elder lecturing young people instead of someone currently dealing with that reality.
2. I’ve pointed it out in comments on other reactions, but I love how the second verse almost changes the meaning of the chorus without changing a word of it. The first time, it comes off as someone dealing with the disappointment of life’s progression, but on the second chorus, it begins to feel more like a cry for help, as if these effects are hitting way harder than anyone expected and they weren’t prepared to deal with it.
Yeah I mentioned the vocals lend to a sound of denial and desperation.
He definitely sounds desperate and in some verses maybe even angry. I always thought his performance was pretty much perfect on this song.
And I like that he isn't the best singer and that you can hear imperfections throughout basically all Offspring songs - but it's not about singing pretty, it's about the message and they don't give a sh!t whether you dislike something about a song.
Always came across as very punk in my eyes.
To me Offspring is on a level with Bad Religion. Intelligent Punk.
Story of my life man.
He wasn’t looking for a refined voice , it was too upbeat for him which took away from the message for him.
Boom thank you for defending that angelic voice
Weird hearing people describe this song as having an upbeat quality. I always thought it sounded very wistful and melancholic and fits the lyrics perfectly.
I agree 100%. The song is uptempo, but it feels very sad and almost pleading to me.
Pop punk “wahoh”s are quite cringe
@@Shovelglove545 Whys that
Yea
couldnt agree more
The vocals are fire for this type of style
Gone away is the best mix of emotion, debt, musicianship and lyricism. It is also one of their most popular songs.
stay away from FFDP version
hope they find the story behind the lyrics... the whole song makes more sense before that
@@Videodragon64the fddp version is pretty shitty
And after that, "The End of the Line" would be a good follow up.
@@dja_ Whats the story?
They never really got enough credit for reviving and keeping the genre alive and relevant. All members are very talented.
I scrolled a bit and didn’t see this so I wanted to throw it out there that “The Kids Are Alright” was song in 1965 by Th Who. The phrase was super popular and became a film, was used in sports jargon, and all sorts of media. Even the title of this song, “The Kids Aren’t Alright” is pop-punk at its best. It’s flipping the table over and making everyone look at the underside instead of the pretty veneer. It’s catchy and musical but also real and hits hard.
I do think you should continue to dig in as there’s a lot of layers and commentaries on society.
And in the opening theme song to "That 70's Show" the cast -- a bunch of teenagers -- sings "We're all alright!" as if to reinforce, or agree, with that sentiment. It was a "reminiscent" show, a remembrance of better, simpler times where "the kids" were generally good and mostly had harmless fun, even if the elders around them thought things were going to hell in a handbasket with the next generation... kind of how every older generation thinks of the younger generation. But they're like, "hey man, back off, the kids are alright." And The Offspring telling it real like, "No, the kids aren't alright."
And then in 2018 Bad Religion released "The Kids are Alt-Right",
The Offspring were phenomenal in the 90s. They were one of my favourite bands in high school along with Silverchair and Metallica.
Check out the album “Smash”. One of the most iconic albums of the 90s.
Best-selling independent album of all time.
Others have mentioned Gone Away + Self Esteem, but IMO you need to start with their first -- and biggest -- single, Come Out And Play.
I agree I think Ryan & George would love that one.
Self Esteem has always been an embarrassing Nirvana ripoff for me. Come Out And Play is amazing.
came here to say this. easily their most unique and best song.
@@TerribleEnglish I don't hear anything that even resembles Nirvana imo
@@MountainDew1993 The verse music is in the style of Smells Like Teen Spirit and the chorus is like Lithium.
I USE to hate this song until I sat and listened to the lyrics. NOW it’s grown on me so much it’s my favorite Offspring song.
"you're gonna go far kid" is great song, but for me Offspring is one of those rare bands where i like everything i hear from them.
No lying there buddy. U ever listened to smile empty soul? Another band with no bad song
Try Queens of The Stone Age. They became my all time favorite band and their new album is awesome
Self Esteem is my favorite song by them. Yall should check that song out. I think yall would like that one melodicly and the lyricism. Its gets pretty deep.
See I think for all the reasons they didn't like this song they would hate that song. They don't like his voice and it is only more exaggerated in Self Esteem.
@@Ronfost89 they might get a laugh and a kick out of it, but i agree that they probably won't like it overall. it's just a 90s loser anthem. nothing special about it
@@Ronfost89 True, but if they don't like that voice then they probably won't like any of their stuff. BUT at least the lyrics in Self Esteem or Friends Got a Girlfriend has enough to make them thoroughly entertained regardless. Lol
@gsxrfoster89 what they hated about this song is the whhooo ooohhh after every line in the chorus, they don't do that on Self Esteem. That song is also a little heavier than The Kids Aren't Alright.
@@bigred9991 They also specifically pointed his voice out a few times
I understand why some people don't like Dexter's vocals, but he does have a unique voice. Between that, and Noodles' guitar playing, these guys are instantly recognizable when one of their songs comes on. I was 14 when their 3rd album, "Smash," dropped in '94. I think they were the first punk band I'd ever heard, and that record is great. The first 2 before it are much more raw. Dexter's become a much better singer over the years. You might really enjoy some of their new material. Their latest album, "Let The Bad Times Roll," came out a couple months ago. It's a good listen.
I've just now realised why Dexter and other punk singers voices don't appeal to me. I don't enjoy singing without vibrato. I like Offspring okay and I listen to a bunch of metal screamers, but punk vocals have never hit my ear right and I didn't know why until now.
It just sounds out of tune to me. I've tried but I just can't get through it
It's so interesting your take on Dexter's vocals, to me he's an amazing vocalist, his range is crazy and his tone is just unique, no one else sounds like him. It's kinda crazy to think how opinions and perspectives work, to me the vocals were always a highlight of The Offspring lol
Couldn’t agree more
Gone Away! Please! Such a meaningful tune by them
The speed of the music in this song always reminded me of the frustration and anxiety that comes with growing up; and the way life speeds up as you transition from child to adult
Can't overstate the popularity of this song in its day. That's the biggest appeal to me. From the opening riff, I'm transported back to the highschool parking lot after school. I can smell the fresh cut grass wafting in from the football field even through the neverending fog of CK1. I can hear my best friend missing every note and getting the lyrics wrong from the passenger seat. It's a stroll down memory lane! ❤
This song is lit af live. The whole crowd shouting "whoa-oh!" and the energy was crazy. I am biased though, been an Offspring fan since I was 10 lol.
One of my favorite punk bands...his voice adds to that punk style. Come out and play, self esteem, all I want, etc they have many hits to their name!
This album was my gateway to punk, godspeed fellas
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
The thing about The Offspring, I didn't get why they were so popular for years. Then I randomly caught them live. Wow, what a powerful band. They sound even better then the studio recording. They are one of those bands, in which the recording does not paint the whole picture, until you caught them live. Listening to them here, many years later, I actually hear the orange county california vibe in their music.
I never heard it b4, but with you mentioning it, I can hear that sort of surf pop beat (or the evolution of it) in their music. It's def not the Beach Boys, but you can hear the ancestral tree there.
@@thevirtualtraveler I agree w/this statement. To my ears, it takes me to orange county, ca. Like something you would listen to, cruising along PCH/Pacific Coast Highway, or having some beers w/the bbq grill or a bonfire going on the sand w/your crew. I hear the same vibe in Social Distortion, No Doubt & Avenged Sevenfold. I even hear a little bit of the Disneyland vibe TBH.
I have to admit I wasn't a big fan either til I saw them live. They were opening for 311 and I really liked it.
Gone away is my fave by them. Definitely give that a listen.
Grew up with this song blaring through my mom's mini van speakers. FIRE SONG CHOICE SIR'S Y'ALL KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
Awesome video fellas! Been asking for this awhile. Glad you got to them. I hope you do more down the road!
For real thought ya done this one. Stoked to see ya back.
"Come out and play" is another song I know you heard, they play it at alot of Pro sports games.
Dexters voice (much like Billie Joe in Green Day, Mark/Tom in Blink) takes getting used to.. works perfect for the band and the genre! The Offspring are such a great live band too. But yeah.. I echo a lot of these comments about Self Esteem but also Bad Habit and Want You Bad are great tracks too 🖤
You guys have the best reviews on RUclips. No apologies, not afraid to not like the music, insightful commentary....feels fresh. Thank you.
How can one street swallow so many lives? This song is powerful and the lyrics grab on to me tightly. It reminds me of Pierpont in SoCal: many young people lost to drugs and violence, and it’s heartbreaking.
I like his voice: I can hear the pain he is singing about.
You two are so great at what you do. You dig deeper into the music and lyrics, but manage to be fun as well ( easier said than done). 👍👍🤘🤘
Dexter has a unique voice to me. Been a fan since I heard Tehran. Thanks for covering these guys. Oodles of Noodles! Peace!
Maaaan hearing you say "N O F X" tells me that y'all have another killer band that you haven't discovered yet! NOFX is the BEST representation of punk. It would actually be super cool to see y'all do a deep dive into punk like you did with metal/thrash/prog a while back.
Sadly, if they don't like Dexter's voice, they hate Fat Mike's voice. They'll hate it. Maybe Bad Religion is a better choice.
They will haaaaaate Fat Mike's voice lololol
@@bioblastbeats6450 fat mike's voice is sexy af tho
NOFX are waaaaaaaay better than The Offspring.
People gotta stop recommending bands they obviously won't like just because you like them...
Before Linkin park I was a huge into The Offspring!! loved this album so much! If you understand the "satire" of the upbeat style....it's to make the mainstream pop media play it on the radio/MTV/VH1. The Offspring were masters of simple effective thought provoking music in a time of uncertainty...
Offspring "Come Out and Play" was their original super hit and it still slaps. You've definitely heard it before and the lyrics again are extremely prescient as they're talking about youth gun violence!
and Self-Esteem :)
Take a listen to "Gone Away". My favorite by the band.
Great song, also almost the entire Smash record is reactable, so many classics.
This is hands-down one of my favourite Offspring songs. So much emotion in the song and the lyrics. Guys, punk isn't necessarily about singing nice or sounding nice. It's about rebellion, emotion and expression. Offspring are pioneers for modern punk, especially their earlier stuff. One of my favourite songs of them is Bad Habit from their Smash album. One of the huge albums in my adolescence!
About time you brought some 90s punk! Pennywise! Bad religion. Lagwagon. Social distortion.
And btw. Part of the appeal of punk was it sounded like any of us could do it. Talent wasn’t always a necessity. It was more about the lyrics and the feel.
"Gone Away" is a great song by them, especially if you have lost someone you love. You should listen, even if you don't react. Love your stuff, been a fan for years. I love that you guys aren't "fanboi's" of every song you hear, and give honest reactions.
I just realized you guys are over a million subs, that's awesome guys.
The punk vocal aesthetic is very polarizing to people. Its one of those things you generally had to grow up liking because one of the qualities embraced by the punk scene and many adjacent genres is vocals that are intentionally raw, unproduced, and not "good" in the sense of a regular singing voice. Think of it as the idea that anyone can just get up without any training and sing....and that is what appealed to so many people and created a community around punk. Its why punk has a smaller following than most other types of music, but one that was intensely loyal and committed. The Offspring aren't fully punk but are heavily influenced by it, and the singer certainly has a bit more polish and alternative / pop timbre to his voice which is one of the reasons the band made it so big.
This whole album is killer and legendary. Not a single weak song.
Pretty Fly is bad. Full stop. But I do like this album overall.
@@Wrencher_86 Disagree.
@@Wrencher_86 pretty fly is...ok for a radio rock song. its goofy but catchy and memorable with a cool guitar. why dont you get a job is the one that is really bad for me. just annoying. hate the melody kinda stolen from the beatles, dexter voice doenst fit, the whole thing is bad. feelings ia also very skipable. good record though. perfect for the time (sounds like 1999 to me!) and crossed a bridge from what was pop punk then to mainstream rock.
WHOA OH! I like that part.
You guys are straight up the best
Their album SMASH was a monster album. It's so damn heavy. Nitro (youth energy), bad habit, Gotta get away, Genocide. It's one of the few albums I can listen to start to finish
The video is amazing well produced. Lead singer is a genius he's got doctorate In molecular biology, but he just wanted to rock out
Actually Bad Religion started this kind of upbeat, multivocal choruses since second half of the 80's (oozin' aah's). Green Day and The Offspring actually copied Bad Religion a few years later (mid 90's). Give a try to Bad Religion's "21st Century Digital Boy", "Turn on the Light", "Change of Ideas", "Recipe For Hate"... It was Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz's label Epitaph that released the first successful The Offspring "Smash" and it kickstarted their career. So, any song out of "Smash" by The Offspring would be a great choice too.
I don’t disagree but thought I’d add in, the Ramones did a lot of that kind of stuff. Upbeat music about lobotomies, turning tricks, dying in war. Hey! Ho! Let’s go! But yeah, Bad Religion seems directly responsible for the 90s punk sound.
I have been watching you guys for years it nice to see how your opinion has changed since that first one.
please give ‘Gone Away’ a chance. such good lyrics in that song ❤
Think they will have the same outlook on Dexter's vocal's, but that song hits hard
@@Moparmutt1976 i found a version he did on the piano that was simply beautiful. (within the last few years i believe)
This is not just The Offspring's best song. It is one of the best metal tunes ever!
Don't worry, guys. It took me like 20 years to get used to his voice. LOL
His voice sounds like Jake Buseey looks. Lol
Jennifer lost the war. First song on their first album 1989. Definitely their best album. Raw. Lyrics are incredibly moving. Sounds amazing.
1st album is my absolute favorite.
It's a great catchy song. Your analysis is very unbiased and I appreciate your points. It hasn't aged the greatest, but it's a good romp from time to time. Lots of nostalgia there.
Self Esteem and Come Out and Play are great Offspring songs and should be next on your list from these guys for sure
One of the first albums I bought as a kid. I wore it out too.
As you go through their catalogue, you can really witness their evolution, a kind of rise to the top and fall to complacency. You're catching them somewhere in between with this song. It's a good one to get in with them because from here you can go back and forward, and still get quality.
Punk is short sweet and repetitive. Take Bad Religion for example. Feels like you're listening to the same song over and over but to me and millions of people they're awesome, the OGs.
NOFX is a must also !
Bad Religion is a band I've only recently started to get into. They're great. "We're Only Gonna Die", "Infected" and "American Jesus" are top notch songs.
I agree…something happened between Smash and Ixnay On The Hombre. The music changed…the attitude was gone.
This is not just The Offspring's best song. It is one of the best metal tunes ever!
@@shack8110 calling it metal is a stretch, IMO, haha.
The ending guitar lick sounds like a siren. It is a fitting end, the song is over, reality sets in, the truth of the lyrics finally sink in, and life starts after paused in this moment of reminescence/melancholic wonder.
The song takes you. Almost as if slowly your vision goes from thoughts, to a crime scene or emergency. It's more than perfect for the tone, and I dont think many people pick up on that. When i first heard it and tried learning it on guitar, i thought it sounded like an ambulance, but i never connected the lyrics to it until i was much older and understood the meaning of the song.
I wanted to play professional hockey when I was a kid, I obviously did not get to, but I heard this song in NHL 2014 and it resonated with that crushed dream and now I always make sure to listen to it when I go and play puck and my local hockey rink in the winter
Finally some Offspring! Gone Away is another great one to check out
I saw em live in 2018. They played everything perfectly. I was surprised really
One of my favourite bands ever
It’s about time you get to these guys
Aaah my childhood growing up in Gabon, africa
Surfing, skating, listening to the offspring with the boys. Good times :)
Nice work you did, you're gonna go far kid...
Sadly, we can all relate to the lyrics, we all know kids that fell into those traps and scenarios. A lot a friends are gone, in so many ways.
Love you guys, best reaction videos on RUclips, but so much more than that. Insightful, soulful, and real.
Way back in 2001, my late husband and I were sitting in a waiting area at MD Anderson. We struck up a conversation with this really sweet woman sitting next to us. It was the usual where are you from, what do you do, what is your diagnosis. Then she starts to tell us about her son and how proud she is of him and his little band. The way she spoke about him, we got the impression it was a little garage band. Then she suggested that we should see them if we ever got a chance, and mentioned they were called The Offspring. Hubs and I both sat there in shock. Yes, this little band she was so proud of was The Offspring. Really, really sweet lady and a fun story. Still haven't had the chance to see them live though.
Ryan was out as soon as the vocals started!!😂😂😂
I mean, he soldiered through it, but you can tell he was SO disconnected. Rubbing his eyes, laughing and shaking his head.
George: Stayed pretty locked in, in my opinion. Great vid, y'all! 😂😂😂🤘🏻
Saw them 3 times when I was an (angsty) teen. Great show! I always thought that the opening riff sounded a little bit like the theme song of the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer ( showing my age)
One thing I learned is that a lot of people want perfection and even though he don’t have the best vocals offspring, billy talent, and sum 41 have always are my bands that know how to get you rocking
“Self esteem” is definitely one guys will appreciate
The vocals suit this punk rock style, which is what this is
They still put on amazing live shows.
Dexter is a legit doctor. Let that sink in...
I kind of like his voice but I like the Offspring a bunch. Come out and Play is the first song I heard from them and loved it They've been one of my favorite bands of this genre since.
"How could one little street swallow so many live?" Still one of my favorite lyrics! And the older i get, the more powerful that lyric becomes.
Ryan would HATE AFI haha 😂
His vocal delivery is him yelling the importance of the message. And the tone is pure punk.
the video clip they made for this song is absolutely essential
Give me some Fuel!! Nothing but Bangers!!!!
This album was ALWAYS in my diskman from like 12-14 years old. They lyricism on a lot of the tracks from this album, my favorite being the title track, is fantastic.
Offspring is one of my favourite bands, everything from the smash album is a masterpiece
They really have their own sound within that pop rock 90s style
Come out and play was a great song for my freshman year of high school!
Appreciate the hell out of yall
This track brings me back to playing Snowboarders 2 against my older bro on the playstation. Perfect song to charge down those mountains .
Great reaction, one of those bands I took for granted since they got radio play. Love seeing George go back to the lyrics!
Please react to ELDER - THE FALLING VEIL!!
You're Gonna Go Far Kid is hand down my favorite track from them with Offspring being my second favorite band there is a lot of songs to love for me but this one is always in any playlist I make.
I love offspring. I've seen them live a few times but once in the early 2000s.... They were amazing live. So much fun. The had a fire hose onstage and we're spraying the crowd . Which was awesome cuz it was like 100 degrees that day in DC
Aw man, grew up on The Offspring!
So anyone else here from when these two first started to get into rock and metal? It's fun to see them just automatically go into head bang mode now.
Childhood song of mine, God damn it never gets old. Same with "all I want" by the offspring. Classics
I could listen this one all day..
love this song
Dexter's voice is unique and i really dig it. I can appreciate that you do not care for it, but to me, he is really good.
Kinda of a garage/punk vibe from these guys. They had both deep and comical lyrics. Just a good time jammin to them in the day.
Who else gets a mental image of a plane engine starting and flying when listening to this song like I do?
I think pop punk vocals are a love 'em or hate 'em thing really. Watching people dissect the lyrics it really struck me that there's very few Offspring songs which are this good lyrically, you really got recommended the best.
The "whoa" you hear in this is in alot of punk songs over the years. Started alot with the Ramones
I play this song really loud.
When I was a kid, The Offspring and Everclear were the first bands I encountered that actually wrote about real life and asked hard questions.
