Simply put ... White Zombie came before Rob Zombie's Solo career .... White Zombie Was basically a band from 1985 through 2000 which was the bands last official album that this track is off of. They then split after 3-4 years of touring for the last album cause they wanted to go in diffrent directions musically .. So Rob got most of a band together & debuted as Rob Zombie shortly after.

Good breakdown. I'd add that Rob's solo albums leaned more heavily into the industrial/electronic genre than most White Zombie, although you can clearly hear him going that direction on this album, and this song especially.
Oh, also his brother--going by Spyder Zombie--was the front man for another industrial metal band, Powerman 5000. I always thought it was a neat little bit that while Rob leans in heavy to his horror movie obsession in his music, his brother frequently leaned into a sci-fi theme.

2000? wrong, this album was released in 1995. They officially broke up in 1998. Touring the last album for 3 or 4 years? wrong again. They played live for the last time in 1996 meaning they probably toured their last album for less than a year.

White Zombie was the name of this band, before Rob Zombie went with a new band. When asked about it he simply said "Success affects people differently and the success of that band had ran it's course. It was time for me to move on." Also, White Zombie was long before all of those band's sounds you mentioned save for Nine Inch Nails. They started in 1985 and dominated the underground scene. I think Rob was sick of just being the poster child for underground music. Funny story an art professor my gf had in college saw that she was listening to his music and told her how he used to teach him Robert (Cummings) and his brother Michael (Spider from Powerman 5000). He remembers having them in his class and that while Michael was the talented one, Robert was definitely the creative one. Also, Rob used to paint the set pieces for Headbanger's Ball on MTV from 1985-1996.

  • @Damiana_Dimock

The nomenclature, Rob Zombie, is derived from the Punk Rock culture of naming oneself after their band’s name, à la The Ramones, or using a clever pun or play of words to create their Punk persona, à la Justin Sane, Joe Queer, Lux Interior, Poly Styrene, & Pat Smear. White Zombie comes from the horror film of the same name. Rob Zombie, both a prolific Horror director himself and a massive fan of Horror films, uses Horror motifs in his stage show as well as in his lyrics. Often, the lyrics are just references to films-“More Human Than Human,” for instance is likely a reference to Blade Runner, but does it actually mean anything when you do a close reading of the lyrics?
That is to ask, how much weight does the reference carry? How important is it that you know the references to understand the song’s lyrics?
I listened to A LOT of White Zombie, along with Fear Factory, Deftones, Sepultura, Nine Inch Nails, and Tool, when I was in middle school but I didn’t really follow Zombie into his solo career. Out of the bands Lex mentioned White Zombie being at the intersection of, only Korn was around while White Zombie was together, and just barely.

Uuuhhh...what? Every single one of the bands that Lex mentioned were around while White Zombie was still together...Godsmack being the least, formed 3yrs before WZ broke up in 1998 (and released their 1st album that same year):
      Godsmack: Formed in 1995; 1st album: 1998

      Korn: Formed in 1993; 1st album: 1994

White Zombie was formed in the 80's by vocalist Rob Zombie and his then-gf bassist Sean Yseult ("Yee zo")... guitarist J. Yuenger joined around 1992, and White Zombie scored a major record deal w/ Guns N' Roses & Nirvana's label Geffen. Their '92 album 'La sexorcisto' produced a big MTV single "Thunder kiss '65"... By the time they went into their next album 'Astro creep 2000' in 1995, drummer John Tempesta had joined, and the album became a 2X platinum hit w/ the 'More human than human' single on MTV. White Zombie had been doing this style for years before KoRn, Godsmack & Kid Rock got huge. Rob Zombie used a lot of samples from movies and programmed beats in their music that gave White Zombie a different sound from bands of their time, like Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Pearl Jam, etc.
From what I heard, Rob Zombie was increasingly frustrated w/ the dynamics of White Zombie, and wanted more control than Yseult and Yuenger were willing to give him... White Zombie toured w/ Pantera in 1996, and although a major success, Rob Zombie said that at the last show around 1997 (?), he bailed on White Zombie... He crafted a solo album 'Hellbilly deluxe' in 1997/'98 and kept drummer John Tempesta in his solo band, adding bassist Blasko and guitarist Riggs... 'Hellbilly deluxe' became an even bigger hit in 1998 than White Zombie's 'Astro creep 2000'... and sold 3x platinum in the US (3 million copies) and he put White Zombie on ice permanently.
Rob Zombie still keeps busy w/ movie projects, but his band is still a major focus w/ his music... Former Marilyn Manson members John 5 (guitar) and Ginger Fish (drums) ... w/ Piggy D (bass) comprise his solo band today.

White Zombie is a 1932 American pre-Code horror film independently produced by Edward Halperin and directed by Victor Halperin. The screenplay by Garnett Weston, based on The Magic Island by William Seabrook, is about a young woman's transformation into a zombie at the hands of an evil voodoo master.

There's an X-Ecutioners remix that brings out more of the song's potential. Rob Zombie's also involved in it, and it also adds Slug and Josie Scott, the Saliva dude. It's kind of a "Oo'kay, let's do it right this time" kind of deal. The remix version is called "(EVEN) More Human Than Human (featuring Rob Zombie, Slug & Josie Scott)" by The X-Ecutioners. It might be satisfying and triumphant to hear the song with its potential maxed out, after hearing this "bleh" version.

It's a reference to the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," which served as the inspiration for the movie "Blade Runner." The fictional Tyrell Corporataion's slogan was "more human than human," describing their bio-android product as being the best of humanity, but perfected, i.e. "more human than human." The line "I want more life, fucker" used in the song was pulled from the story as the last thing heard by one of the creators of the project when one of their "replicants" tried to demand an extension to its built-in 4-year lifespan and was denied.
As far as the difference between "White Zombie" and "Rob Zombie," Robert Bartleh Cummings (Stage name: Rob ZOmbie) was originally part of (and co-founded) the band White Zombie. Rob eventually disbanded the group and moved on to a "solo" career (with a different set of bandmates) and his new group was simply known as "Rob Zombie."

Brad, you pretty much nailed it. It's about a "replicant" (human-looking robot) in the movie Bladerunner, who is, by human standards, super-human, but his makers only gave him a four-year lifespan. In the movie, he tells his maker, "I want more life, fucker!" just before, well, ah, ... enacting his displeasure. Violently. Interestingly, the movie Bladerunner was loosely based on the short story, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", by Philip K. Dick (lots of movies based on PKD stories). That story inspired the song "Are Friends Electric?" by Tubeway Army (aka Gary Numan of the famous 80's song, "Cars") many moons ago. It's super-early electronic rock.

Rob Zombie was lead singer of the band White Zombie ( named for the movie) until they disbanded in the late 90s. Rob went solo. Also indulges his 1st love, movie making. Music 2nd.
That gravel grinding voice and dreadlocks all the way down his back are unmistakable. Lifting clips from old horror movies his thing. Current project is a movie based on the Munsters TV show of the 60s. Which actually had a movie of it. Hellbilly Deluxe was his first album. As for more human than human, watch the video. He appears in full zombie makeup. As a demon he is more than human. But yes its all show like a good creature feature movie which growing up in the 70s he'd see on late night TV in New York state. A heavy industrial thrash metal sound also his signature.
In reality he and wife Sherri are vegan hippies living on a farm in upstate NY. Which is pretty commom history of those who created heavy metal. Blues mixed with anger. Loud, distorted, fedback lots of guitar/ bass and faster. That should help you get Zombie.

Rob Zombie's lyrics are pretty much always fun/cool references to horror/cult movies or other media and even if the reference has a serious theme it only serves as inspiration to the sound of the song. If you get the reference it adds a dimension to the song but it's still just references and not stories. You'll have to watch the referenced movies if you want more than good music. ;)

It is just so GROOVY, my man; c'mon, y'all got ta dig ya some White Zombie man... 'cause they had Rob Zombie as their kickass Front Man!... And it is quite simply a proven fact of reality that Rob Zombie is undeniably kick-ass! He has contributed SO very much to my generations pop culture; from directing some absolutely awesome Horror films like: "House of 1,000 Corpses", "Devil's Rejects", a couple of "Halloween" remakes, "3 From Hell", "31"(I think that's the right numberbut I AM a bit dyslexic when it comes to numbers so, yeah), and something or 'nother about Salem.... like "_____ of Salem" or something I've forgotten... LoL.
But in all seriousness, Rob Zombie has at least 13 amazingly energetic & adrenaline inducing Rock Horror Songs, and to accomplish that is just, wow... well, that's sayin' something in my book anyway. I know my nostalgia is coloring ny opinion here but, I love me some Rob Zombie... and his wife, Sherry Moon Zombie, lemme tell ya somethin' now boooy! She is SO fine, and so damned cool too... and real good at doing a spot on portrayal of a scary sexy, creepy as all nine hells, crazy-ass psycho killer bitch in his movies & music videos! She is just great; she's definitely a prime human specimen if there ever were one... ha.

Rob was raised in a circus, and he once said that he watched over 9-hours a day of television throughout the majority of his childhood. Because of that, much of his "life" was actually make believe, and so most of his lyrics deal with old movies or shows or something. Hence this song, as people said, about replicants from Blade Runner.
