Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning of the things to come if we didn't pay attention to each other and Disturbed's version was the anger felt because no one heeded that warning.
Love your take on it. It's also reflective of the different generations the songs were sung for. I don't think the impactful style changes, that were made would be felt the same if the songs were released in opposite times, to opposite generations...
AND the Pentatonix version is hope - showing there is still a chance for us to get better. Listen to all three back to back to back. Amazing the feelings emoted by each one is so different.
Disturbed's version is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Born in '61, I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel's version. A softer sweeter and much sadder version of the song. The visceral raw anger of Disturbed's version hits so much harder!
Michael Bazoitis, I totally agree with you. The MEANING of this song is so serious and literally heart wrenching, but personally, I feel that Simon & Garfunkel sang it in way that actually juxtaposed the meaning of their own lyrics. They sang it too softly, and even a bit lighthearted. Yes, it had a slight tone of sadness to it, but more of a bittersweet sadness, not TRUE sadness. But it also sounds lighthearted, which doesn’t fit. If you listen to S&G’s version NOW (especially after hearing this cover) you’ll detect the lightheartedness I refer to. David Draiman’s gutsy vocals and anguished tone (and expression) really did this song justice. It’s literally the best cover of ANY song I’ve ever heard in my entire life.
@Vmurph Discussing musical opinions is so much fun because there is no right or wrong. While I love Disturbs version of the song, it isn't my favorite remake. My three favorite remakes of original songs are in descending order: 3. Johnny Cash sings Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" 2. Disturb sings Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence." 1. Whitney Houston sings Dolly Parton's "I will always love you." I will admit number one and number two are very close!
@@michaelbaziotis8287 Haha, believe it or not, I didn’t even realize that “I will always love you” was originally Dolly Parton’s. I actually thought it was originally Whitney’s song and that Dolly just covered it. I LOVE Johnny Cash!! Have you heard Dan Vasc’s cover of “Amazing Grace” that recently went viral? Omg, I’ve heard literally hundreds of different versions of that song, and Dan Vasc’s is the absolute BEST cover I’ve ever heard. He’s a metal singer, like David Draiman. He even covered Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence (pretty much identically), but his cover of Amazing Grace is off the chart. He gave it the respect and emotion that song deserves. Just search ‘Dan Vasc Amazing Grace’ and you’ll find it. Get ready for goosebumps 😁
My granddaughter of 8 years old told me her interpretation of the song. She looked up at me with those big brown eyes and said "Grandma, I know, The people on one side of the water have the music, but no instruments and the people on the other side have the instruments but no music. But the boat brings them together because they need to come together to make music in the world." I looked in her big brown eyes and my heart swelled with emotions. In those eyes I seen an innoscence yet a gentle wisdom. To her it was about working together. Whether her understanding is of this song, I don't know but it was beautiful. ❤
As a retired high school teacher, you all warm my heart everytime you all whip out your phones and really get into, dig into meanings, history, and discuss your thoughts. Great job, guys. I would have loved having you all in history class! 🥰
This song is one of the greatest written in history. I’ve watched over 200 reactions to this song and you men were one of only a handful who discussed at length what was behind its poetic lyrics. Thank you for that!
I am a huge fan of the original version by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. I have always said, if you want to cover a classic you have to bring something different to the table. Disturbed certainly did an excellent job of that here. Their version of this perfectly compliments David Draimans vocals, his vocals are atmospheric and haunting on this version.
"and the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made" - to me, the heaviest line in the song. We're determined to follow and worship something so we make and fall for anything flashy or speaks everything we want it to say, and it never works out, it will always destroy the person inside.
I love that line so much too. And it really is amazing how relevant it is today if you consider how that line can relate to modern technology like smartphones and social media and how that technology somehow continues to drive us even farther apart. The fact that the song was written decades before that technology even existed really makes the line feel almost prophetic to me.
I remember your struggles last time. You've all grown and broadened your perspective over the last year. Watching that development has been a delight for this old woman. Hoping 2023 is good to you all and this song burns in your hearts. Best Wishes and Thank You
_The people bowed & prayed_ _To the neon god they made_ _And the sign flashed out its warning_ _In the words it was forming_ _And the sign said_ the words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls Whispered in the sound of silence Well, even if I cant understand to perfection this highly symbolic vision simon & garfunkel illustrate, the message is still unmistakeable. And since illustration painted with words truly is in the mind of the beholder (the listener), I say: Let the poor & the downtrodden tell you about it Let the disinfranchised & financially opressed inform you We do not have the luxury of layers of luxury & assets To protect us from the savageries of society We have known for much of our miserable slow existances now Some have known from birth The truth The inevitabilities that befall us all Whether in this life or the life to come There will be no exceptions No exclusions Rich or poor, great or small This world is changing We must turn to each other, family & neighbors Turn to the promises of the one Looking after us all along We must turn to each other & stand strong No man or government can stop it Only our faith will save us
I have listened to dozens and dozens of Sound of Silence covers, but never like this one. Vibrant, intense, angry, emotional. Every time I listen to it I get chills, the best cover ever for me!
RESPECT. The first time y’all reacted, I was truly embarrassed for you…”people hearing without listening “. This time instead of talking over the video, you listened and absorbed much more of the greatness of this cover. Keep up the entertaining reactions gentlemen.
@@dsaylor36 Their reaction entailed talking over a video with the title "sounds of silence". If you are going to react then you should not talk over the performance and miss major components of the performance. Hit pause, talk, rewind 5 seconds, and then hit play. I like these young men and their efforts to grow. They are young and learning. I affectionately call them puppies because they have such youthful enthusiasm that will turn into adult level maturity. I love watching them grow from where they were 1 year ago to where they are now. We all grow.
If Draimans voice singing this cover doesn't give you mad goosebumps then you gotta be dead, one of my all time fave covers , watched him do this on a TV show live and it was perfect and even when he pushes his voice out its so effortlessly done, love disturbeds music but Draimans voice alone is epic
Jesus and his disciples were poor, they lived poor, Jesus spoke truth to his lost sheep. He said I come to preach to the poor, the sick, the imprisoned into the silence of those who were supposed to be caring for them, but despised them. Pharisee, elitists in Washington, main stream news outlets, elitists in Hollywood and the music industry. They despise anybody not in their so called exclusive groups.
people should listen to the original. then this will give them goosebumps. paul simon is great writer but they sang this song wrong. here is dont correctly.
I usually loathe remakes, but this, this is amazing. I do love this one. His voice gives me chills on this song. The message of this song is now coming true.
I agree for the most part. There are some great covers out there, but most fall short. This version by Disturbed is one of, if not my favorite cover ever! I never knew Dave’s voice was so beautiful until I heard this. One of the most powerful voices out there.
I am old enough to have heard the original version when released. Always loved it , but the cover by The Disturbed is astounding. It has "connected people "! This 64 year old white woman from the South Coast of England, agrees with the sentiments you were expressing! A very powerful message for us all.
It has not only "connected people", it has connected people to the anger that so many of us are carrying - and might not even be aware of - b/c we have felt rejection rather than valued, respected, and loved. Forgiveness, and treating one another with kindness and respect is the only cure for the sickness of this world.
@@johns7530I watched it for the first time a few days ago. I’m 64 and I wanted to scream with rage when it finished. I felt sadness and sorrow too. Extraordinary
@jillcox6685 69 almost 70 year old white woman years fly by, but in our sometimes hurt heart we remain the same teen age or young adult connecting deeply with music, voices and people Binging, crying, laughing with so many raw emotions Hello to All from a french in France
I also want to say, I recently asked my 85 y/o mother (who was a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan) to listen to this version of this song. Three days later, she is still talking about it. She loved it and what she took from Disturbed's version as many other have as well, frustration over not heeding the original warning so eloquently laid before us.
I can't properly express how much I *love* that you tried to research the points that you didn't understand instead of just saying "that was pretty" and letting it go. It's a song that sounds powerful, but I'm sure so many people listen and like without understanding what it's actually about. Thank you for your diligence.
This is what all music reactions should be. Give the song your full attention; don't pause the video in the middle to ruin the flow, and don't talk during the song - wait until the song's over, THEN break it down and analyze it. Well done, guys.
Kudos to them. I do recall being their age and I too would have struggled with lyrics at the time. But as we age, references and symbolism in lyrics gets easier to pick up.
It's alright to pause once or twice if something caught their attention not every 30 seconds of the song to make meaningless comments and unrelated jokes.
I think you boys have figured out this song quite well. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to try and dig into the song and find it's meaning without dismissing it just because you didn't understand it the first time. It takes courage to admit when you don't understand something. It takes more courage to research and find understanding. You also did this research together and discussed it until you all had an understanding of the song. I agree that the visuals in this video are amazing, and go hand-in-hand with the song. Thank you for sharing your response to this song. It's nice to see honest people doing honest reaction.
This is the first video you did not stop to comment, that's how into it you were! His voice and emotion literally pulls you in and holds you until the end ❤
This song has a broader meaning than just emotional relationships between individuals. It has a more social/political context. The 'silence' can be understood to be silence in the face of injustice or ignorance, and how we contribute to the problem(s) by our silence. Note how the prophets are writing on tenement halls and on subway walls. Who writes in those places? People with no other voice typically. It's a warning against complacency and worshiping the things we make up..
The things we usually put above concerns for strangers & for neighbors (worship; idolize) are always the same: pleasure, money, social prominance & reputation, superficial appearences, "what will the neighbors think," etc
Every time I hear this song i am blown away by the prescience of the lyrics. I feel privileged to have grown up with this song and to be educated by phenomenal lyricists, poets and musicians. I agree. This song is about way more than just emotional relationships. Way more.
VERY well said. If we don't learn to listen to those around us, we are doomed as a people and, quite possibly, the human race. Injustice and inequality rampant, and if nothing changes, we will all pay the price. The powers that be already have capabilities of mutually assured destruction. Sooner or later someone will push that button unless we all learn to live together in harmony.
The song is about people's inability to effectively communicate and emotionally reach each other. This video is great...and at the end shows the musicians crossing the void to reach the masses of people on the other shore. The voice of David is amazing !
The live version of this song is a must. The singer was classically trained. I read that in the live version, David was sick with fever which is why he was sitting down. Pay attention to the audience and how quiet they are during the song.
_The people bowed & prayed_ _To the neon god they made_ _And the sign flashed out its warning_ _In the words it was corming_ _And the sign said_ the words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls Whispered in the sound of silence Well, even if I cant understand to perfection this highly symbolic vision simon & garfunkel illustrate, the message is still unmistakeable. This is how music should be listened. Understand the artist, the writer, the meaning, the time. Be in the moment. Music should be an experience. Love these guys for bribing that back.
You really need to listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version to get the full effect. That one was beautiful and deep in itself, but this takes it to a whole other level.
Music touches your heart when you first hear it! I'll be honest, I love the S&G version more! It holds memories in my heart for 3 decades ❤❤ This is a great interpretation and I LOVE it!
This is a song written by Simon & Garfunkel in the mid-60s before cell phones and Technology. Very prophetic and how we all walk around mindlessly with our phones. I remember hearing the song in junior high at a school dance...
Good commentary, gentleman. I first really listened to the words of this song back in the early 1970s in a high school English class. Thank you, Mr. Jewett. In an instant I realized this song was poetry, set to music. It is beautiful and sad at the same time. It spoke to us yesterday, it speaks to us today. Timeless.
I grew up on the original from Simon & Garfunkel. But this version brought new life to it and truly helped me fully feel it. When Simon & GRfunkel heard this version, Paul Sinon reached out to tell David Drainman (the lead singer) that this version was his favorite. Please do more Disturbed. They are a phenomenal band. Also, if you ever watch the version of this song that Fisturbed does on Conan, please know he Sand that with 100 degree fever just getting over the flu. It was still incredible. This man can do anything.
Yes!!! And live on top of that which shows how talented and great he really is. It's even more moving than the video. And he's sitting down the whole time also. As a singer myself it's sometimes hard to sing those notes sitting. True talent.
One of the most powerful and thoughtful songs of when Simon & Garfunkel recorded it. The song is true in the lyrics. Disturbed version puts a angry sad tone it. Best cover I've ever heard and I've heard many. Powerful thought provoking. May we all learn even today from such a song.
It just speaks to the brilliance of Simon & Garfunkel. This almost 60 year old song is as relevant today as it was when it was written. I really the Disturbed version of Sound of Silence. I may actually prefer the Pentatonix cover. But in the end the version I cherish most is the original by Simon & Garfunkel. That is the original soundtrack of my life. But for the younger generation I am thrilled they can be introduced to a brilliant song in a way that resonates best with them and their time. And I am ecstatic that these young me for once just sat in silence and listened. No horsing around. They listened. They will remember this song and they will share it with their friends. Hallelujah.
You guys get full respect figured it out vs not trying. I was a kid when SG released this...love Disturbed version and your efforts to learn and interpret! Blessings
Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly brings you to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!!
Gotta be one of the most powerful songs/covers of all time across any genre Seeing this live was honestly something hard to comprehend. One of the most beautiful and eerie compositions ever
Thank you guys for giving this song the attention it deserves. Draiman’s version almost makes me want to cry because of the anger and frustration in his voice. I would give anything to have the talent this man has, the whole group has. Simon and Garfunkel wrote an amazing song, and I bet they love this cover as much as the rest of us do.
First time I see a video of these guys where they all manage to stay silent during the whole song, without endless pauses, and actually try to get the meaning and discuss it after 👏🏼 Still get goosebumps, even after hearing this a thousand times before.
I was thinking the exact same thing. It was very nice, I hope they do it more often. I understand they have to pause, but the over talking can get annoying.
What i like so much about this remake is the way it unfolds. It starts with one person singing calmly and one instrument playing, and over the course of the song, everything increases but the speed. More instruments join in, the volume increases and the intensity increases. These changing dynamics in volume and intensity and real instruments is something that has gotten rare outside of classical music.
I'm an older lady that watches RUclips while I quilt and I love you guys and the music you listen to. Well done! Keep it up. I especially like that you all figure out the meaning of the song. Thanks.
The guy in the black shirt with green print on it, was very attentive throughout the entire video. I really enjoyed watching him as listening to the song. My son spent 13 years in the Marine Corp and did 3 tours and now he is a Deputy Sheriff and he plays this song and when I hear this song I think of him and all he has been through. It was a pleasure listening to this with you.. much love to you all
I am So Happy you all experienced what I grew up with! ✌🏽 This song came out a year after I was born, it is 59 years old. It is my mission to remind those now of what is being forgotten and that is, someone had a Dream 60 years ago. Watching you all listen and get into this song brought tears to this old man's eyes along with hair on my arms standing up. Us Grandparents had it goin on! Give Peace One More Chance!
I love how they researched the meaning of "the words of a prophet..." How prophetic do we see those words now? In particular in light of social media in general and the last few years with so many usual meeting places, even churches, being shut down because of the pandemic.
I love that you guys took the time to look into the meaning of the lyrics. At 61 years of age, I remember the original version of this by Simon and Garfunkel but Disturbed sang it with such a build up of crescendo it gives me chills every time I hear it.
I heard Paul Simon say that he did alot of songwriting at night in the bathroom, hence the line "hello darkness my old friend". Paul gave major kudos to the way Disturbed covered the song. Watch Disturbed play this live on Conan...third time would be the charm 💚🎶🎵
I'm so glad you guys gave this a second try!!! This song has always communicated how it feels to be alone in public places (school, work, other) where it's so loud with friends when you're the only one alone. It's a difficult feeling to overcome sometimes and it's only made more complicated with phones and the internet. Love that you guys! Music is a tool for personal growth and you guys are helping people learn things ❤️
_The Sound of Silence_ truly is a modernized Shakespearean lament about the widespread obliviousness people have toward the cold hard truth. That we create reality everyday by what we say & what we do to one another. And whether you listen to the bible, or you must face inevitabilities even those who know nothing about the bible know are coming in the future, that truth is the same, regardless
"And no one dares disturb the sound of silence." If you think about the elevator effect, where many ppl stay quiet despite being close together, it shows how we often overlook opportunities to be a part of a community, even if the community only lasts a few minutes. The potential impacts we can have on each other, if we just listen and share, are important to our individual and social selves.
Two best covers: Sound of Silence by Disturbed and Hurt by Johnny Cash. They are pieces of amazing talent, each in their own way. Seriously impressed that y'all researched/looked up the meaning of the songs. Well done, gentlemen.
Regardless of how you interpret the song's meaning... this remake is so intense. David Draiman has a powerful voice that evokes the emotion of this song so beautifully!
I am so glad I watched this. This is the best breakdown of this song I've ever heard. I've listened to it a bunch and seen multiple reactions, but no one has ever really dove into it like y'all just did. Thank you so much for that
Disturbed is badass! They have done three remakes of 70s and 80s songs. They did this one, they did Shout by Tears for Fears, and Land Of Confusion by Genesis.
I remember when the original by Simon and Garfunkel came out, but I get goosebumps EVERY time I hear this version, and it's so spot on for today's society.
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel as well, their music was light and gentle, easy listening and you could understand and sing all the words. As time progressed, I learned to understand what was being sung so when Disturbed did a remake it blew me away!! My heart sat in my throat and I got goose bumps, almost made me cry it was so beautiful. I applaud you guys for taking the time to listen to this song, it has great meaning to a lot of people, something all generations could learn from. Bravo to you!!
This song really is deep and somehow it's just as relevant today as it was 50+ years ago. Disturbed brought a new dimension to this and introduced it to younger generations, as well as re-introducing it to us all in an incredible way. I really liked how you guys dug into it to figure out the meaning behind the lyrics.
Good job guys! This is how you grow as young men. Older songs had meaning and life lessons in their lyrics. Wise people are passing on their life experiences to help future generations. As long as you look for the meaning and message in the songs as you guys just did.
I sang this song many times in high school choir, but this version is my favorite. I absolutely love that you guys were moved to consider the meaning of the lyrics. Good work!!
I was born in 1959 but I didn't really know Simon and Garfunkels meaning to the song then. It was written during the Vietnam War and also the assassination of President Kennedy which was part of the reason behind the song. I honestly feel the words through Disturbed's version and I get it now. Gives me chills everytime I hear it. With everything that's going on in the world today, you'd think it was just written. I'm a huge fan of Disturbed now. Even at my age. 😁 Hi from Scotland 🏴
I can't even explain why, but knowing there is a Scottish Disturbed fan who was born in the 50s absolutely made my day. You make the world better just by being in it, thank you for just being you. Regards from New Zealand. 😊
Hello from Colorado USA. 56 now and love the original, of course,... I mean who could write the poetry of lyrics like Simon and Garfunkel? But I agree the Disturbed rendition is needed and meaningful for our time. I agree the anger makes the point that we did not heed the rendition of 1964. So what choice shall humanity make now?
We have seen Disturbed in concert many times. I have loved every song. When I first heard them cover The Sound of Silence I was riveted, and it made tears roll. David Draiman has an amazing voice. Simon and Garfunkel sang the original back in 1968.
I'm a Simon and Garfunkel fan big time but oh my the first time I heard this version I was hooked amazing interpretation and that voice winner in my books oh I'm 63 years old I absolutely love you guys xx
51 year old guy here, and I love watching you guys. Sometimes you crack me up because y’all don’t do any research on the songs you’re showcasing which brings confusion, but you’re all clever and figure it out while we’re out here hollering at our devices trying to tell you what’s up! How you’ve never heard the Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel is beyond me, but you’re young dudes, so it’s understandable. Keep listening though, expand your musical pallets!
Yep, you guys got it by not being silent and communicating and interacting with each other. The hope of all the artists who have covered this song is the idea that music will be the vehicle to get the message through to the masses of people who need to hear it. Therefore the Ark, that once sustained humanity, through Noah, would be the perfect vessel to carry the tools of music that will help deliver the solution to the world. Nice discussion through communication. 👍

This is one of the disturbed songs that many have heard. And finally you guys have reacted. This is a song that transmits more pain and loss of a person for whom he has fought, and ends up ending... through his own whims or inserts. It's really a song to go through in a moment of crisis!👍👍🙏🙏
"This is a song that transmits more pain and loss of a person for whom he has fought, and ends up *ending" Do you realize what youre saying? I very nearly cried when I first heard that song on the radio in my car ,that voice and that masterpiece of music ...that hurt me right in the feels ...
The most incredible thing to me, is the complete diffence in voices and general sound and we still get the same feeling as from the original song by Simon and Garfunkel. An absolutely beautiful song, sung softly and gently. Which is what we have heard for decades. Then along comes Disturbed and the song takes a whole new life. With this incredible strong voice and arrangement. But still beautiful as the original. I love it. ❤️
Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning of the things to come if we didn't pay attention to each other and Disturbed's version was the anger felt because no one heeded that warning.

Disturbed's version is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Born in '61, I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel's version. A softer sweeter and much sadder version of the song. The visceral raw anger of Disturbed's version hits so much harder!
Totally agree. I was born in 62.

My three favorite remakes of original songs are in descending order:

2. Disturb sings Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence."
1. Whitney Houston sings Dolly Parton's "I will always love you." I will admit number one and number two are very close!

His voice is very haunting!
Disturbed is top tier band. Them, Rammstein, The Offspring, Green Day, Linkin Park and Evanescence. Those voices are legendary to me.
Agreed 100%. The original is one of my favorites of all time, and I’m PICKY about covers, but I think Disturbed did a fantastic job
@@4rl0ng but only 1 member of Disturbed is on the song.
This and Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" are my favorite covers.

I absolutely love the way y'all don't interrupt when he's singing this amazing song. It's so much better that way...
Yeah i couldn't watch it. But i rocked this whole thing and l enjoyed them talking story at the end.
You were " embarrassed for them"? It's called a reaction video .
@@dsaylor36 Because they heard it and reacted before listening and understanding.
You did it the right way by allowing the entire performance to play out before giving your assessments. Good job.
If Draimans voice singing this cover doesn't give you mad goosebumps then you gotta be dead, one of my all time fave covers , watched him do this on a TV show live and it was perfect and even when he pushes his voice out its so effortlessly done, love disturbeds music but Draimans voice alone is epic

people should listen to the original. then this will give them goosebumps. paul simon is great writer but they sang this song wrong. here is dont correctly.

I usually loathe remakes, but this, this is amazing. I do love this one. His voice gives me chills on this song. The message of this song is now coming true.
Troy I agree with you 100%
I agree with u too
Paul Simon praised this version of the song.
I agree for the most part. There are some great covers out there, but most fall short. This version by Disturbed is one of, if not my favorite cover ever! I never knew Dave’s voice was so beautiful until I heard this. One of the most powerful voices out there.
Listen to the version he does with Myles Kennedy. It's beyond amazing!
I am old enough to have heard the original version when released. Always loved it , but the cover by The Disturbed is astounding.
It has "connected people "!
This 64 year old white woman from the South Coast of England, agrees with the sentiments you were expressing!
A very powerful message for us all.
60 year old old white man. It touches my heart to see these young men giving music a chance. Open minded. Just listening.
It has not only "connected people", it has connected people to the anger that so many of us are carrying - and might not even be aware of - b/c we have felt rejection rather than valued, respected, and loved. Forgiveness, and treating one another with kindness and respect is the only cure for the sickness of this world.

Not only is this considered one of the best covers of all time, but the singer is also a classically trained singer.
Sweet. Love the thought of her listening to Disturbed's version.
Always listen to your elders and those that came before.
Love to your Mother!
Copyright they can’t
Kudos to them.
I do recall being their age and I too would have struggled with lyrics at the time. But as we age, references and symbolism in lyrics gets easier to pick up.
It's alright to pause once or twice if something caught their attention not every 30 seconds of the song to make meaningless comments and unrelated jokes.
It's a bit stupid to tell people, what reactions should be.
Agreed
I was thinking the same thing! Shows remarkable maturity and reverence. IMHO of course 😊

His voice is amazing he was trained classically but he switches to heavy metal with so much ease ❤️
Well said..
This is a great cover!
He does country too. No limits with that much talent.
Classically trained???? Lol. Where?
@@tjxc1477 He was a Cantor.
It has lots of meanings depending your life experience, Paul didn't right it as such though.
Every time I hear this song i am blown away by the prescience of the lyrics. I feel privileged to have grown up with this song and to be educated by phenomenal lyricists, poets and musicians. I agree. This song is about way more than just emotional relationships. Way more.
Jackson Martin. This!!!!! Well said!
The part that always gets me is “hear my words that I might teach you, take my arm that I might reach you”. Damn man.
The song is about people's inability to effectively communicate and emotionally reach each other. This video is great...and at the end shows the musicians crossing the void to reach the masses of people on the other shore. The voice of David is amazing !
04:08 gives me chills every time i hear it. His voice is truly amazing.
I really, really appreciate you making a legit attempt to understand the meaning of the song!!
The live version of this song is a must. The singer was classically trained.
I read that in the live version, David was sick with fever which is why he was sitting down.

Live version?? You mean at Conan show?
This is how music should be listened. Understand the artist, the writer, the meaning, the time. Be in the moment. Music should be an experience. Love these guys for bribing that back.
You really need to listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version to get the full effect. That one was beautiful and deep in itself, but this takes it to a whole other level.
Music touches your heart when you first hear it! I'll be honest, I love the S&G version more! It holds memories in my heart for 3 decades ❤❤ This is a great interpretation and I LOVE it!
Disturbed's version is off the chain. Tenements are like the projects.
David Draiman of Disturbed has one beautiful voice. The different levels and emotions in it. Amazing rendition of the song.
This still gives me chills. Paul Simon gave him props.
Gotta be one of the most powerful songs/covers of all time across any genre
Seeing this live was honestly something hard to comprehend.
I cry every time I see the video and hear the words as expressed by David's voice. The video version is so much better than the Conan performance.
First time I see a video of these guys where they all manage to stay silent during the whole song, without endless pauses, and actually try to get the meaning and discuss it after 👏🏼
Still get goosebumps, even after hearing this a thousand times before.

So we'll said. May we find our voices, our unity and peace.
I love how they researched the meaning of "the words of a prophet..." How prophetic do we see those words now? In particular in light of social media in general and the last few years with so many usual meeting places, even churches, being shut down because of the pandemic.
All We Are Saying❤
I love that you guys took the time to look into the meaning of the lyrics. At 61 years of age, I remember the original version of this by Simon and Garfunkel but Disturbed sang it with such a build up of crescendo it gives me chills every time I hear it.
I love this song. I love this remake. This was written in such a different time. The 60s folk singers were poets.
"People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening" are the most key lines that represent the meaning.
I’m usually not a fan of covers…but….I just LOVE this version!
I heard Paul Simon say that he did alot of songwriting at night in the bathroom, hence the line "hello darkness my old friend". Paul gave major kudos to the way Disturbed covered the song. Watch Disturbed play this live on Conan...third time would be the charm 💚🎶🎵
I love that lyric

I like how they break down the lyrics and try to understand what’s the song is about. Deep.
The best remake of a song ever..I love that music can bring everyone together ❤️ wonderful guys!
I love what Disturbed did with this song. I also really love the Pentatonix cover.
So do I, they both did an amazing job!
Two best covers: Sound of Silence by Disturbed and Hurt by Johnny Cash. They are pieces of amazing talent, each in their own way. Seriously impressed that y'all researched/looked up the meaning of the songs. Well done, gentlemen.
I think also this, Hurt is very complex song. Good wishes to you

Disturbed is one of my favorite bands! I've seen them 6 times live. Check out one of their original songs - Ten Thousand Fists, The Game, Inside the Fire, Indestructible. Such a great rock band!
I love the heart that went into that. "Neon god they made" rightly evoked anger from Disturbed.
I love young people with open minds! Having great, intelligent conversations and can always agree or agree to disagree! Love y’all! From B’more!
This is one of the disturbed songs that many have heard. And finally you guys have reacted. This is a song that transmits more pain and loss of a person for whom he has fought, and ends up ending... through his own whims or inserts. It's really a song to go through in a moment of crisis!👍👍🙏🙏
