- On September 12, 2012 at 7am, one of Cedar Point's (former) tallest rides, "Space Spiral" was demolished in order to help make room for a new roller coaster coming in 2013 called Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper will be the tallest, fastest, and longest Wing Coaster ever built. The new coaster will also feature the world's tallest inversion at 170 feet in the air.

I love how the cabin flies outwards from centripetal force at the last second before it hits the ground.
The reason Space Spiral was demolished wasn't because of Gatekeeper. (You could have easily fit the ride in that area) The reason it was demolished was because the ride was always prone to breaking down and wasn't as popular as new rides. Case and point, Cedar Point didn't feel Space Spiral was popular anymore but required high maintenance due to it being nearly 50 years old.

I've got a feeling that another reason they took it down because being 47 years old and the constant swaying in the wind and I've seen the tower sway quite a bit on windy days and with that constant flexing of steel for long periods of time like this can cause metal fatigue resulting in cracks and eventually breakage , So I'll bet the real reason they took it down is fear of metal fatigue and the tower falling over with passengers on board
As with any metal , constant flexing of it for long periods of time will eventually fatigue and break

In terms of space, Just look at all the space behind the Space Spiral. Since is it s spinning tower ride, it doesn't take up s lot of space. So they technically COULD HAVE kept it up. Unless the new coaster went through the space were the Space Spiral was in. The could have built the coaster behind it. But that's just me ;-)

It will be sad when we pull in next summer and see the Cedar Point skyline missing this icon, its anchor for so many years. Despite its tameness, we always rode the Space Spiral for tradition's sake. It was one of the first rides I ever rode at CP when I was nine years-old (in 1970, back when you had to wait to get on it). We would always look for our car in the parking lot as it climbed. ~sigh~ ...time marches on.

you almost shed a tear, but then you see gatekeeper and realize that demolishing this thing was TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Even though this comment is old I am still going to reply. GATEKEEPER WAS AN AMAZING DECISION. I got to ride it in October. Very underrated B&M coaster

They couldn't just build Gatekeeper and keep the Space Spiral?......... Why didn't you guys just take the car part off of the Spiral before demolishing it so you can keep it as part of history? Did you even think about that??

Gatekeeper did not go over where Space Spiral was. They removed it to prevent an accident. it has been up sense 1965 . They were in fear of metal fatigue and the tower falling down with people on board and smashing the new coaster. on top of that it was always prone to breaking down and maintenance costs were getting too high.

There were two different Wildcats in the parks history.

They took it down for safety reasons not for Gatekeeper. That thing was nearly 50 years old
Oh, come on! It was just such a stupid question that I wasn't even sure if it was suppose to be a joke! They blew the thing up and let it fall on it's side into a heap of broken, twisted metal on the ground, plus it was pretty much right by the entrance to begin with. If they were going to relocate it, which they wouldn't since its popularity is virtually nonexistent (I didn't even know the ride existed when I visited the park), they would disassemble it piece by piece with care, not blow it up.
And then the wicked twister spikes had rhe same fate.
I've been on it many a time.

In the most simple of terms. I think the should have kept it and just move it somewhere. Back by maverick would have been awesome! But with the force of the fall, i highly doubt it could be rebuilt back together. I mean just look at the cabin lol

I went on it one time. It was cool, but it got stuck at the top for about 10 minutes, so we never got on it again.

Even in the 1960s when I was a kid,only the lower section of the car was open most of the time,They would only use the top section on very busy weekends and holidays. Ridership was low then also. However thanks for 47 years.

All the non popular rides in the future will be destroyed for new epic ones. Its sad because I had memories with those rides. Such as the Space Needle as a kid.
Since my first visit to Cedar Point in 2008 the following have been removed.

Disaster Transport
Demon Drop
Wicked Twister
Shoot the Rapids
Wild Cat
Chaos
Bumper Boats
Antique Cars
Paddlewheel Excursions
Sky Scraper
I'm sure there's more but that's a lot! They need to chill out foreal and not a single one of those rides was relocated to Michigan's Adventure. I'm not a fan of Cedar Fair anymore as they purposely neglect my home park.

Disaster Transport was cool because of the ride type, not the ride itself. It was too dark to see anything and the whole stupid "3D" thing was weird.. But what pisses me off about the new coaster is that it looks just like X2 at Six Flags Magic Mountain except the seats do not spin on this new version. So it is a cool looking roller coaster but it seems like a super cheap knock-off of a way better ride out there. That is why I say it is not worth it.
The thing is Gatekeeper and X2 are actually different coaster models despite both being wing coasters.
Gatekeeper is a normal wing coaster from B&M while X2 is a 4th dimension coaster with the rotating seats. So they really are not ripping off each other at all.

Rebuild the Space Spiral. Gatekeeper is, and always will be a trash coaster due to them taking the Space Spiral out for it. Windseeker also doesn't cut it for me.
