I’m nothing more, nothing less than another cedar point attendee. I’m 30, i’ve been racking my mind, but I really think I only got to ride the dragster twice, both times in one visit. My last time riding it was in the evening shortly before the park was about to close because the line was much shorter. I never forget being all the way up there, looking over my left down at the Q station and up at the rest of the park all lit up.
I’m a union ironworker, I’m very adamant about safety. Saving or preserving human life is humanity’s greatest achievement. Many people do not understand, this is not a carousel with a max speed of 10 miles an hour. This ride goes 400+ feet in the air at 120 mph. Everything on this ride needs to be 125% safe. The wheels, the track itself, the launch system, the brakes, the restraints, the trains.
My heart goes out to the people that have to make these decisions because they just don’t wanna see anybody else die or get hurt. They also don’t want to see the ride be removed. If you gave me the option:
A, keep the ride, closed the rest of the year to get it 125% safe so nobody gets hurt and we can continue to enjoy the ride
    -or-
Option B, we hurry up to get it open again and the worst happens, And then the ride has to be torn down.
    I’m going with option A.

As someone who worked there in the past and takes multiple trips a summer, it seems CP is running on fumes. They have seemingly been cutting corners on cost the past 5-10 years. Millenium and maverick are very worn down. Closed often due to mechanical issues(and ofcourse weather)that could be avoided with more maintenance.
There also have been more and more restaurant chains that are leaving the point. Chick fila(left twice 😂) as well as Johnny rockets and now MELT too! When their contracts expire CP seemingly is looking for too big of a cut that these places are not willing to pay. Being cheap while also charging outrageous prices is def going to catch up to them!

Millennium Force was down the entire day because it's lift motor was broken, but I got to ride Top Thrill Dragster. After I rode Top Thrill Dragster, I immediately got in line and got back on it again, and it broke down while my train was in the launch area. One of the ride attendants then made an announcement saying, "We anticipate that this will be a lengthy delay; we suggest that you ride other rides." I had no idea that would be the last time I would ever ride Top Thrill Dragster.
Top Thrill Dragster did fairly well for a number of years. I have gotten to ride it every time I've been to Cedar Point except the first time I went, which was in 2006. That time, it got shut down for the rest of the day due to heavy winds.

Should have paid up and went with Intamin. Hope they saved the old trains so they can retro fit them lol. But for real, we could have had so much more than a bare minimum ride. Airtime hill on the launch track, vertical LSMs, a more traditional rollback, trains that are already tested. Prototype or not, they didn't test the trains properly for the ride they were sticking them on. Like really, who couldn't see this coming with them maxing out the limits of their prototype train pretty much right out of the gate? They tried to sprint before they learned to walk confidently. And they used the public's safety as their test to try to slingshot their company into the big boy coaster game. Thankfully this stuff was being paid attention to with maintenance checks.

At the speeds this coaster goes you got to have some very tough durable wheel assemblies !

  • @steelcity7466
    @steelcity7466 4 месяца назад +5

Like you said this is a prototype ride. The trains and larger wheels have no track record to look at. You can run simulations and tests but until you run the actual ride under the everyday stress and loads you won't know for sure how they will perform and last. Our first ride was the front of blue and the last was the back of silver. I don't know if it was the different row but we noticed a lot more shaking with silver. They can't add too much weight to the trains so bigger/thicker may not be on the table. I'm sure they will test the metal to make sure it met specifications and maybe increase the specs for the new ones. If they change too many parts/pieces it will be down until 2025. If they can keep most of the items and specs and maybe increase the hardness of the metal I think they can be back up in 4 weeks. I don't know if it's an option but if they can swap these out weekly for new it could be up and running by Memorial Day. That would take a lot of time and money but I think that would get it running the earliest. I think we will see one train get the revised parts and start running in a month. The other trains won't get the modified parts until they are sure the new will hold up. Then the others will be updated and there will be hundreds of cycles if not more. I think Fury went through hundreds of cycles before reopening last year. That would take days if not a week or more. Then reinspect and probably run more and reinspect. They will run an excessive amount of tests well above and beyond what will be required. People will throw Zamperla under the bus but I think they have the most to lose if this gets worse. I'm sure they have all available resources working this issue. I think any other manufacturer would of had issues of some type but that can't be proven. I say mid June, best case, if multiple items need replaced it may be out of service until 2025.

Intamin is the problem here, not Cedar Point. No responsibility. Universal is not going to work with them again after they finish their current two jobs. The Sea World (United) parks won't work with them. The issue is they take no responsibility for their design flaws. None. They take no responsibility when they screw up parts - as happened with Arctic Rescue and Darkoaster last year. Intamin is trash of late and those I know indicate they doubt Intamin will survive more than a few more years without a major shakeup in management. Intamin is arrogant and blames Universal for issues with Velocicoaster and Hagrid's - and charged Universal for their screw ups.
Zamperla is working on a fix and, unlike Intamin, took ownership of the issues with their design. Intamin would have screwed the train up and made CP pay for their design problems. This is why they are losing so much business.
My contacts at Busch Gardens and Sea World in FL have all said B&M has been amazing to work with, especially compared to the nightmare stories they heard from their counterparts in San Diego and Williamsburg that had to deal with Intamin.

Depends on the extent that it reached. The best case is that it's just the wheels, redesign the wheels, and install them hopefully without changing anything else. This could maybe be by Memorial Day. If it affected the wheel boggies. This will take a bit longer, maybe sometime in June. Take this with a grain of salt, but I heard that it may have affected the milled aluminum chasis. I hope that this isn't the case because that could mean that Zamperla may have to redesign the bulk of the train completely. This, of course, would take a lot longer.

What Zamperla should do is after they get this issue figured out, and provided the rest of the rest of the operating season for CP goes well, come up with a multi-launch coaster design that combines TT2 & Xcelerator (basically extend the layout beyond swing launch, Top hat then brakerun). It doesn't have to be as tall or taller than TT2, but could be longer and incorporate more elements than TT2. It could compete with other multi-launch coaster makers on all aspects (height, speed, length and # of different elements).

  • @Frankenberry
    @Frankenberry 4 месяца назад +3

I hope it's not going to be closed for the rest of the season. However... I feel like it all depends on how difficult it's going to be to engineer everything to make sure that the part is strong enough to withstand the INCREDIBLE forces this ride is going to put on the trains, particularly the wheels and wheel assemblies. Obviously, the materials they used didn't hold up as well as they first calculated. So.. It's probably going to be a matter of finding a material to make the wheel bogeys out of that is strong enough, redesigning the parts, then mounting and testing. And lest we forget, the thing with these trains is the fact that there's not any welds,.etc. So, it may not be as easy as it would be on an older train. I'm not an engineer or coaster designer by any stretch, but given all the factors it seems like it's probably going to be a complicated process.

  • @dindog22

I think they need to get those trains lower to the track because the heart line is now off from the original. Taylor Bybee said that you really get thrown going down that spiral when you are seated on the left side of the train. if the riders on the left side are feeling that, I imagine the wheel bogies would be under enough strain to start cracking. did this not show up during the testing phase? let's not forget Maverick lost her heart line roll because it put too much stress on the trains but they found it out during testing

That is business 101. Why pay $10 million for something if another company can do it for $5,000,000
Why do you think Knoebels builds most of their woodies in house.... #1 they own a lumber company, #2 John Fetterman (head of Maintenance) is also a designer and #3 it is cheaper.
in 1999 CCI wanted $8,000,000 to build Twister.... Knoebels did it for $3,000,0000 in house, resurrected phoenix for $1.3 million dollars all in.... and built flying turns for less than $6.5 million and that was a coaster that hasn't be produced for nearly 75+ years and no existing blue prints were found to work off of... and they still did it cheap.
The most expensive coaster at Knoebels is Impulse at a cost of $8,000,000. So knoebels has 6 coasters in total, 3 of which are worth a visit and cost a combined $12.3 million dollars over the coarse of 40 years (Phoenix, Twister, Impulse), if you add Flying Turns, Black Diamond and Kozmo's Curves they are still under $25,000,000 invested and managed to have stuff people actually want to ride.
CP invests godly amounts of money on coasters that cost a fortune to maintain, the ROI is horrible... and none of their 17 coasters rank int he top 10 of any list except Steel Vengeance
Knoebels has 2 top 25 woodies at a cost of only $4.3 million dollars. Even Holiday world has better attractions for less money.... but in the end cost is always a factor and CF justs pent $12 million for Dorney's Iron Menace and that was a waste as it is short and boring... still a welcome addition, but they originally planned a Gravity Group shuttle then the pandemic hit.
CF tries to hard to break records instead of investing in long term with little issue... this is why CF has gone down hill, and six Flags is on the same track... them getting together was stupid, you think they cut costs now, wait... they preventative maintenance of the rides will go down hill fast as 6 flags will NOT Spend money until the coaster derails.

I'm not going to trash Zamperla because it's a prototype and CP obviously took a risk. These things are bound to happen in engineering.
However, what I will trash is the overall direction of this project in general.
Management has always trashed Intamin for their prototype hydraulic launch; saying that Dragster was the biggest mistake in the park's history. Just for them to go to a manufacturer that has a poor coaster portfolio with another prototype.
If reliability and almost perfect engineering is what they were looking for then let's be honest; B&M should have gotten the bid (even though that would have been odd. Lol). I'm just saying, this is what they get for blacklisting and cutting corners.

They should have went with Intamin. They have a proven recent track record of high quality and very reliable rides. CP only chose zamperla because it was the cheapest option. Why else would you choose a manufacturer who has very little experience in coasters and never built a coaster over 150 feet? It makes sense the more you think about it

    • @Onoitsbroko

@@alecscheerer2329 I agree that they should have went with Intamin. Especially given how well they are doing now. Intamin should have 100% been given a second chance on this project.

Aluminum wheels are nothing new even in extreme conditions. Aluminum yokes assemblies, pins, and sleeve bearings are new. Also the silver train was down for a while Friday night before it shut down early.. and the zamperla techs were looking at this area of the train.

Just because Zamperla hasn’t done this before doesn’t mean it’s a concern at this time. For example car manufacturers that have been making cars for decades have recalls on cars all the time. When you have a ride with this much new technology and complexities, it will need time to work out the bugs.

I’m not sure what to think of this entirely because I was never excited over this projects reimagined concept to begin with. They have to keep in mind that they have been the leader for sometime in coaster thrills specifically but if they continue to cancel their working relationships with the heavy hitters of the coaster building industry then they will become a “remember when” kinda park overtaken by regional park ops like Busch/Seaworld and ultimately larger competitors with parks like Universal with their ever growing roster of thrill coasters made by many of the companies CF now refuses to work with.
In my opinion this does not bode well for them especially when considering their integration with six flags which also has moved away from coaster projects with these same manufacturers over recent years aside from RMC, B&M types

I am glad both companies are erroring on caution and keeping it closed till it is safe to reopen. An incident that might cause a minor problem on a normal ride could be catastrophic on something this large.
