Thanks for this. I was an employee this summer and I was lucky to get the last ride ever on spiral. I will miss it. Yeah, I agree that the park should have done a "Last Ride" for Spiral. Just like they did for Paddlewheel and for DT.

The minnesota State Fair has this ride The same Willie Buhler Space Tower called The Space Tower built the same year as the spiral the same cabin that revolves. I think the State Fair will keep it going for a long time hopely another 50 years.
Thank you flymd11 for this awesome tribute to the Cedar Point Space Spiral!! It will be surely missed. A true family-fun icon ride! So many great memories of SS. Even driving to CP (east) on State Route 2, you could always see the SS from the Edison Bridge over Sandusky Bay, and even at other spots from Route 2.
I sure am going to miss the cables banging up against the tower as I walk by that beast at night. Space Spiral was one of a kind. Too bad the location didn't give the ride justice. The merchandise and games building is such an eyesore from the top of SS. But I wish they would have kept the top tier of the cabin open to the public too but we all slowly watched it rot away and become spider infested over the years. RIP Space.
For me, Disaster Transport, Space Spiral and Demon Drop were the things I looked forward to seeing in the front of the park. I visited CP most often as a kid in the 80's and 90's.

So many sounds missing so quickly. I have a micro-cassette recording of Wild Cat sounds because it was right outside my room as I was recording my dreams one morning and the sounds of bursts of up to four person screams and wheels and rails. Demon Drop is gone, That lift clank of Disaster Transport was one of a kind. And that sound at the end of the video which made me think of all this. Demon Drop had probably the most memorable sounds.
I only ever got to ride this thing once because it was always closed but I'm happy I had the chance. Same for DT. I've ridden that multiple times as well. And Also the Paddle boat ride too, I got to ride that about 6-7 years ago when I was younger. I'm only 16 but I've had the joy of ridding all of these things. Obviously sad to see them go but as a coaster enthusiast im excited for the future.
Wow that was a really great job. I was last at CP in August of 2011 and what a fortunate visit that was. I was able to ride the Space Spiral, Paddlewheel Excurion, Wildcat, and DT for the last time. I also got on ride videos of the SS and Paddlewheel Excursion rides on my RUclips channel. It saddens me to see all these classic family rides being relegated to history. Things like this make me appreciate the Sky Tower at SeaWorld Orlando and the Island in the Sky at LegoLand Florida even more.
Visited Ceder Point every summer in mid and late 70's when my dad competed at the National Pistol Championships at Camp Perry. Always had to take a day to spend at Ceder Point. Space Spiral and Fun House were two of my favorites.
It's a shame that they took it down. If you guys ever feel like reliving a similar experience to the Space Spiral, you're welcome to visit Montreal's amusement park La Ronde and its still standing observation tower called "La Spirale". It dates back to 1967 and it seems to be the same exact model as the one you had in Cedar Point.

well Thomas, I have good news! Cedar point is known for their tall coasters and cedar point is rumored to get a polarcoaster. this coaster is 500 ft high and on a polarcoaster, at the top theres a observation deck on the top. there might not be another rotating ride but there will be another observation ride ! :) but this is still sad :(

its weird leaving the park at night with out the sounds of the cables hitting the tower. it just doesn't feel the same anymore
What a nice tribute to this great ride, still can't believe they did not save the cabin. They saved the trains from Disaster Transport.

The spiral could've stayed gatekeeper wouldn't of interfered with it
