Actually I've just stopped three minutes after Phil entered the studio. I cannot bear so much talking. Phil is there, and some guy doing all that talking!!! WTH????
@@stevet7487 Precisely. Even attempting to finish a sentence was futile in this mostly, Stern monologue. As to Collin's answer saying that all the band's members wrote the songs, although technically correct, in reality, Gabriel wrote most of the band's songs, while the rest of the band composed most of its music. After all it was Gabriel's band from the beginning. In a group like Rush, for example, it was Neal Peart that would write all songs while Lee and Lifeson would compose the music.
@@fatalconceit3362 Unfortunate that Howard decided to show off that day. So many questions, so few opportunities. This one blown. Being a huge Rush fan, seeing them in concert 40 times, I am keenly aware of the writing process in that band. I used to collect their interviews before the Internet arrived. But I wasn't aware of the division of duties in Genesis during Pete's time in Genesis. I had read where Steve and Mike had said they were all involved in the Lyrics of Foxtrot, but Peter insisted on writing all the lyrics for Supper's Ready. And I believe that was also true entirely on the Lamb. The guys were obviously bothered with the belief by fans that it was Pete's band and he wrote all the songs. In Rush, Alex and Geddy were happy to have Neil write the lyrics, and he was well suited and happy to do it. They agreed early on all members would get equal writing credits so no jealousies arose. One can only imagine the possibilities for Genesis creations if Pete and Steve had stayed in the band. I suppose we should just be grateful we got some amazing songs and enjoy them.
@@stevet7487 I hear you. The creativity of the band was off the charts. Peter Gabriel's Genesis was before my time, but even their first album after his departure, And Then There Were Three, is an amazing work, interesting what it would be with Gabriel. Saw them in concert both in Toronto and in the US. Funny enough I grew up in Willowdale and went to the same Junior High as Geddy and Alex, years later. So Rush was close to our heart (no pun intended). Losing It is still my favorite song from them.
@@fatalconceit3362 Agreed ! I love Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, and And Then There Were Three, my first tour seeing Genesis. Great stuff..... Sounds like you grew up in God's Country. I'm envious!
This was very funny parts but I also felt sorry for Phil in a few places. He did well to survive that. I really want to see Howard messing Sting around now.
Damn, Stern is so incredibly dense, such a bad interviewer. He repeatedly fails to realize that the guitarist isn't a member of Genesis, he worked in the band and now he's following Collins onto his solo work. He said as much at the beginning of the interview but Stern is such a poor listener, he's so concerned with everything but the actual answers to his questions. It's still the same to this day.
I’m guessing all the people complaining that they didn’t give Collins time to answer, have never heard Howard before. News flash y’all, that’s the way the show ALWAYS was like.
It's so obvious that this playbook is gang ambush, interrupt and try to shock your guests out of their comfort zone and evoke reactions. It's like the playground bully starting a fight and then standing back to enjoy the show.
gotta know Phil regrets becoming smitten and falling in love every other week. and fm radio drilling his songs into our brains to the extent that our regret is to monstrous for remorse.
Wonder if Phil ever found a second to utter a word!! What a chatterbox! Let phil speak for God's sake...I can't bear to watch this..I love Phil and that's whom I want to listen to, not a host who is in love with his own voice.
@@Wyndy57 I did not think Stern was funny. Rather pathetic, as he tried to bait Phil into revealing something scandalous mean-spirited (as against Peter Gabriel). Phil was great. He kept steering the conversation back to something he could honestly answer. I too cringed at the thought of his going on the program.....AND cringed during the program. Odd, I have seen Howard do some fine interviews that were insightful. Not here!
I think Howard really wanted out of his marriage at this time. He wanted out for years before this. Then he did the private parts movie and he wanted out but the movie called for him being faithful to his wife which probably killed Howard inside but the heart of the movie depended on him being faithful.
I remember when this first aired. I was big into Genesis and Phil solo and this was the week's highlight for me! Unfortunately, Howard was a disrespectful chatterbox here, barely letting Phil get a Goddamned word in edgewise. I was like, "Howard, shut up with the juvenile questions for ONE MINUTE and just chat NORMALLY with the LIVING LEGEND you have in the studio there!" And even when he did, he just glossed over whatever Phil said to get to the next "Who are you banging?" question. Quivers was even worse---even on the radio I could tell that Phil was getting pissed off with her constant "What happened with your first/second marriage" questions she kept asking like a f@cking mentally challenged person. And she kept it up even after HOWARD realized he needed to chill. When they went to the first commercial, I felt like Howard went to Robin to tell her to cool it because she was being more annoying than he was! As others have said, Phil was a true gentleman (in the English style, of course) to put up with that idiocy for so long. No surprise that he never came back though.

I'm kinda not surprised that Phil didn't stick up for Peter in this interview, which is kinda sad really, what a shame.
He really didn't have a chance.
Gary’s shirt killing it
It’s a solid noine out of ten
I am surprised Phil didn't walk out the room during the interview..
This was very funny parts but I also felt sorry for Phil in a few places. He did well to survive that. I really want to see Howard messing Sting around now.
Phil had to regret this visit. I knew it wasn't his cup of tea when I saw the thumbnail. He's uncomfortable here, but holding his own.
Robin used to interject in interviews much more than she does now.
It's so obvious that this playbook is gang ambush, interrupt and try to shock your guests out of their comfort zone and evoke reactions.
It's like the playground bully starting a fight and then standing back to enjoy the show.
4:18 when did Jackie slip him that joke?
gotta know Phil regrets becoming smitten and falling in love every other week. and fm radio drilling his songs into our brains to the extent that our regret is to monstrous for remorse.
Incredible voice!!!!
10:58 Was he projecting here! Robin completely called it too!!!
Wonder if Phil ever found a second to utter a word!! What a chatterbox! Let phil speak for God's sake...I can't bear to watch this..I love Phil and that's whom I want to listen to, not a host who is in love with his own voice.
Howard is just hilarious. So funny that he was trying to get Phil collins to crack but couldn’t do it.
I don't think Howard ever asked him back. LOL
@@rk41gator I don't think Phil would ever want to come back!!👎😝 I CRINGED when I discovered Phil would be on his show! 😮Lol
Anyone else think the screen grab they used when u click on the clip looked like Robin Williams?
Alexis: Actually, if you compare how Collins and Williams looked in around 2010, (when they were both 60), they are literally indistinguishable.
Howard Steen is the business 😂😂
Every interview is a serious interview.. its all over youtube… I think its ace to have someone take the piss for a change.. I bet Collins loved it but he is super conservative and aware of his image ..
Just so refreshing to hear the pub talk barrage from Stern - Brilliantly funny 😄
@@MrDodgedollar Howard can be one of the best interviewers around. You hear him with Paul McCartney, Sammy Hagar, Madonna, et al, and his entire line of thought is riveting. That was not evident this time around. And I did NOT get the feeling that Phil, conservative or not, was comfortable with it.
Now I remember how and why I couldn't stand Howard for so many years. Nowadays, he's tolerable.
You kidding, the show sucks now
HAHA....MY UNCKE WAS PAINTING IN NYC AND PHIL COLLINS WOKE UP AND CAME OUT OF THE ROOM AND SAID WHO ARE YOU?....MY UNCLE SAID A PAINTER AND PHIL WENT BACK IN THE ROOM TO BED. HAHA HE WAS STAYING WITH THE DECORATORS FRIEND MY UNCLE WAS WORKING FOR ....COOL STORY
……but what was the year Stern fans?
Hell yea
I think Howard just really wanted Phil Collins to marry a model lol
At least we now know why Dodgy disappeared without a trace after Phil declared he was a fan.
Lmfao
Poor old Phil attracts NARCS like the plague!! Married 3 witches who took him clean!! Guys a Jedi master but the sith keep on coming. Keep fighting phil
What year was this?
96 I wanna say. Cause that was when he split from Genesis
An empath talking with two narcissists, Jesus!!! And then he had to go home to IT and get more. No wonder he's in a wheelchair. PHIL - JUST SAY NO!!! It's a lovely word.
Phil’s in tough shape now, being a millionaire can’t by health sadly!
He admittedly had some drinking problems. It really ages us
Can it buy health though?
Eric told George he was in love with his wife and George told Ringo he was in love with his wife and they were both cool with it. You could do that back then I guess.
HS "have you ever seen each others penises"? Hilarious, pure Stern, overall a good show!
From a "Howard Stern Show" period, in which Stern himself regrets. The interview, would have gone differently, in the much later years - early Sirius in particular.
That’s the problem he regrets it. His show has been bad for the last 9 years.
@@CowPatCityLimits I'm sure someone agrees.
