I love the way you portrayed the rattlesnake’s perspective. Like, “yeah, I was perfectly happy living my life and hunting and breeding in the Texas desert before some weird humans put me in a mailbox in California. I don’t even like to bite people, but I will if some guy puts me on top of the cable bill. I’ve been sitting next to the Sears catalog all day and all I’ve learned is that air conditioners are on sale.” 😂

What I've learned about Elan is tragic. I'm cynical but I think those pop psychology, troubled teen places focused on theatrics for the well-off sh*tty parents who warehouse their scapegoat until they can set it loose on a lesser ivy league (whoa, I'm not cynical at all!). Crappy 70s parents would find "confronting" "selfish" teenagers to be satisfying, instead of getting care for neglected teens.

I was in a clone "drug treatment" cult here in Hawaii called Habilitat. It was modeled specifically and directly after Synanon, including its own charismatic ex-junkie leader. Having been there at 17 years old, I was deeply disturbed by the emotionally damaging so-called therapy of The Game. Habilitat is still around. It is connected to the court and corrections system, along with being the largest Christmas tree vendor in Honolulu. To this day, I am extremely triggered by anyone yelling criticism at me.

I'm 48 now & have been sober for almost 15 years. I think the easiest way to show this wasn't helpful to addicts is that he was drunk when they got him, that alone should illustrate that its not a system for staying sober. I also want to say that the laws still suck for helping addicts, today's current rehabs are totally unregulated & anyone with the funds can create one, choose any form of "therapy" they want, typically choosing things they can charge a lot for, & they often have addicts at the helm, but don't hire good professionals as therapists, shrinks, & counselors, so they make a lot of $ & the people who need help don't get any.

I loved this (the intro! wow!). Great story telling, great editing, great writing. I'm glad to hear that you'll be covering Elan soon. David Sedaris's sister was abused there and she committed suicide at age 50 or so after living in poverty her whole adult life. She blamed Elan.
I think you should cover Alcoholics Anonymous next. They fit Hassan's BITE model to a T. When I learned of Synanon I immediately saw how AA led to it. The verbal abuse, the emotional manipulation, the hacky, outdated approaches to addiction (which have been disproven by science in the past 30 years). Only 3-10% of people who go to AA get sober but many get put into situations where they are preyed upon and abused which leads to relapse and self-blame (because that's what AA promotes) and it becomes a tragic cycle.
About 10 years ago a man was convicted for killing a woman who was 25 years younger than him, they met in AA, her family alleged that AA enabled it and they sure did; several of his AA friends knew that he targeted young women, which many do in AA, and they just watched women be abused and stolen from. There's an episode of 20/20, I think, about the case and that it's not an isolated incident. There's also a documentary, "The 13th Step" all about the sexual abuse and how AA is aware of it and how they DARVO the victims who have been brave enough to come forward. AA's strength is that it's a group of people that can come down hard on one dissenter and they will ostracize and ridicule people who criticize them. These are often unwell people who need psychiatric care, not a support group, and so they bully, stalk, harass, etc. people who have come out against AA. They use the group to control people.
They enable members to exploit, abuse, traffic, sexually assault, and steal from members without being charged with any crimes because "it's the best that we've seen to cure something incurable". Their answer to the allegations that members have been raped, trafficked and even murdered is that AA is the best solution to alcoholism and addiction, so they're saying, "Take the good (3-10% success rate) with the bad (trafficking, theft, physical abuse, emotional manipulation, etc.)".
It would look bad to attack AA because the public's perception is that it helps addicts. They aren't effective and they enable life-altering abuse among its members. The abuse often creates a pattern where the victim relapses, comes back, is targeted again, and so on. And according to AA/ NA it's the addict's fault, always, for relapsing. No matter what they went through, no matter if another member targeted them and abused them. AA either turns a blind eye or enables it.
I have seen trusted AA members give away phone numbers and email of new women to the men in groups, without their consent. Then the guys start following them on social media. Under the guise of welcoming someone in they will offer rides home, will perhaps buy them some groceries or just offer an ear, and that's how they get more info on their victims. It's a haven for predators and traffickers because they know they will never be reported or even made to leave the group.
Nothing keeps anyone from being an AA member. There aren't meetings just for sex offenders for example. A new member may be told by her sponsor (who a member must take direction from or she will be ostracized) to share that she was SA'd as a teenager and a convicted rapist or pedophile can be sitting right next to her taking notes.
I know this became super long but AA is a cult and they have literally gotten away with murder.

Omg if you find Synanon interesting, you should really look into Community Recovery Los Angeles, and Christopher Bathum. He built an entire rehab cult, based on similar theory, I actually worked there. And was a client there.
He's currently in prison for $178 million fraud case in California, scamming insurance companies, all types of fraud, and inappropriate behavior, all kinds of things. The feds literally busted in all 30 facilities in like 2016. Like our version of the game was called "cohort" - It was a wild modern day cult for addicts.

There was a meme on fb the other day that was an old picture of people dancing & gyrating in a crazy looking way. I'd bet money it was a Synanon party after watching this video. Just watched you with Andrew Gold. Great interview & interesting subject.

Synanon still exists here in Germany. It is as cultish as ever. And "the game" where people abuse each other verbally and psychologically is still practiced as well. I have first hand experience but don't want to go into more detail.

And this remind me of a group here in Italy too. I don't know if they are linked. But the tough love methods for sobriety are so so much similar. There is a neflix series about, I don't know if they put it out in other languages, called Sampa, who speak about it. They were cult like. But not exactly like that, I mean they weren't a religious group. But they were religion based, catholic, teorically...

I’m surprised that a year ago, someone still knew what synanon was!!!!!
. I visited a Chicago outpost in 1979 as part of my graduate work in psychology. I saw “ the wire” ( the national intercom system) and by then the members were all donning crew cuts “ because Chuck wore it that way”. It was a bizarre few hours.
Also I interviewed Joe Pass for a radio show I had ( jazz guitar impresario and Synonon devotee). When the interview bogged down and he started to get critical ( and began “gaming” ) me and my partner, I popped a question about his experience in the program. That changed the tone……lol…
It should be noted that they did some real good for a bunch of people until they started the “ community model”. Then youth programs modeled themselves after them ( like Elan School).
    Very nice job.

You can make a follow-up video about Elan School, which had a program based on Synanon and, surprise surprise, whose founder actually was part of Synanon.
