It's like a boxing match where the opponent has both hands tied behind his back, no chance when the game is rigged like that.
The "stacking", of course, is already cheating, too.
And the whole family gets of so lightly. If the family had any emotional intelligence they should be deeply horrified and embarrassed but I see no evidence of that here at all.

Let me get this straight: 1 MILLION DOLLARS for a 20k degree?!? REALLY?!?! This is not privilege, it's a level of stupidity not many of us will ever experience.
Olivia didn't even care about the education and as an influencer you don't need a degree... so she paid that sum for the college experience? For parties and football games?
A degree so she could use nepotism to get into music or acting which her parents would no doubt just bribe casting agents to audition her for. What's even the point? Just be a high school dropout and let someone deserving who will actually use the degree take the spot. It's not like you're trying out for Julliard. That would require ACTUAL effort.
Definitely not a $20K degree. Even very basic in-state schools cost about $10,000 a year and that is before room and board. That is just tuition. You would be hard pressed to get a degree for under $30,000 outside of going to a very small community college. If you’re going to live in the dorms, it’s going to be roughly $20,000 a year. When I went to school, we definitely could get a degree for $20,000! Not anymore.
Regardless, your point still stands. It’s really not about the money for these people though it’s about the status and the ability to say that their kids are so smart and talented that they were able to get into these highly desirable universities.

When everything came out about this major college/university scam, I feel that we as a whole have to question EVERYTHING about the school system, even the very degrees that people receive from graduations. The black woman sentenced to 3 years vs Lori doing a few months in jail speaks volumes, there is no denying the glaring difference because of racial, social and income differences. I love your documentaries BTW… I can tell you put in serious time… it’s appreciated. I look forward to every single one.

My daughter graduated from USC. She worked her butt off in HS, had great grades and test scores and my husband and I took out a loan to pay for it. I never knew people cheated to get into college before this scandal hit the news. I called her and congratulated her for getting in on her own, lol!
My daughter too! She was in that dorm too. Just graduated and got a dream job all by herself. Since I have no strings to pull…

My youngest son was the #3 student in his high school graduating class, a top math and science student, 80k in scholarships. USC didn't even respond to his application. He went on to a bachelors at Embry RIddle Aeronatical Univ, worked with a prof adviser in Italy last summer on a particle accelerator, is getting his Master at Univ South Florida and will be sponsored this winter by the govt of France in a phD. program at Université Paris-Saclay . He knows two of the quantum physics Nobel Laureates. He is 23 years old. But he could not get into USC. If only he'd rowed crew...

And she worked thru high school and got excellent grades to get into that school. So what’s your point?? You think you know our family after one comment?
The girl were over 18 at the time and posed for fake photos to get on “teams” and into a school they weren’t qualified for. That’s fraud and they should have been charged too.

Well they did say that Lori was only 11 at the time. So it was pretty early to be even considering a modeling career for her. It would take an agent to recognize her potential as a child model. And if Lori's mom had been a stage mom, she would have taken her to the modeling agencies herself.

Whether the law books say so or not, I would argue that it’s a much lesser crime than bribing university officials to get your kids into a private university for prestige. Also, the money she had to pay no doubt stung her pocketbook harder than the money that Laughlin was charged.
What happened? To accepting? On educational status ?? Why buy?? Without knowing? Your child has earned that place educationally?? Wouldn't you want ,and accept your child's capabilities??? As a mother grandmother? No matter their achievements?? As I've read on some channels? They are still making money of this !!!??? when this all blew up, i just didn't understand how shocked everyone was. maybe it's because i'm older or jaded or whatever but by that time, i already accepted the fact that if you have the money, more doors are opened to you - legal or not. and in the end, the most frustrating thing for me is - NONE OF THIS MATTERED. look at olivia jade and lori loughlin - both of their careers are up and running, still making money. so what were the consequences besides a VERY BRIEF period of embarrassment?

I completely agree. And it's just a handful of kids every year - it's not like every kid was bribed in. If your kid has amazing grades then they'll be fine. Because lets be honest - it's always kids from well income families that get into the best universities. And it's not because they are smarter, but because they most likely went to a better highschool, and their parents were able to afford tutors and things like that. Do I think it's ethical, what Lori Loughlin did? No. But it was clearly just done from a place of love for her daughter, so she's hardly a villain.
I wasn't surprised, I expect that behavior from rich folks. But I was pissed off, as someone who did graduate from USC. My friends and I worked our asses off to get into USC, and to maintain our scholarships. My friends weren't rich either, either they got lucky that their parents were able to get employed by USC and got free tuition, or were relying on scholarships. We were minorities too, so we had to work twice as hard too, and it pissed me off to hear these students bought their way in and likely stole a spot for a student like my friends and I. And you could spot those students, because honestly they were not smart or talented. We always joked they bought their way in, and well they probably did. I know rich folks are more likely to succeed and get accepted to rich universities but I rather have rich kids that actually got accepted for their talent or intellect and not because their parents scammed their way in.

My sister and I got expelled from a school in Texas for this. Ironically, it happened on Friday the 13th.
The woman gave the kid's father address instead of her own.
I did the same thing. I used my parents address so my daughters could go to a different high school. It was public school, but I did it.
Usually these rich people just donate a lot of money to a school to get their kids in.

Well, I went to a state school in Louisiana. However, I ended up in a management position at Edward Jones in St. Louis. I remember in our orientation I was with Harvard and Stanford graduates. Everyone asked me where I went to school and they were shocked. Just goes to show if you have the determination, you can do anything.
Al Gore's grandad spent about 6 million bucks on a library to get that dimwit into Harvard. These people might as well be living on a different planet.
@@danieldavis3035 Honestly, the education available at the Ivy League Schools tends to be fairly average, if not below average. They have to accommodate all the fail children that get in on legacy admissions, after all.
The main benefit from going to those schools is the connections you make - lots of rich and well-connected ppl at those schools which makes it easy for those fail children to fail upwards.
I wonder how Mossimo’s parents felt when they learned their own son had swindled them? And why nobody at the university noticed that these two incredibly talented rowers never went out for the team. I suspect most of the kids knew something was up. They knew how they were doing in high school, and whether or not they had the grades etc to get into a top-tier school.

I am one of those athletes that actually DID train for my sport for 6 hours a day in the summers and at least 4 hours per day during the school year for my entire childhood. I EARNED my full, four-year athletic scholarship and could not have attended college w/out it. Everything about this story makes me sick. Those girls knew everything.
I was at Georgetown from 2016-2021. Gotta admit a lot of us were dancing on the “Tennis Star’s” grave when it happened. Even the rich kids who paid their way in and didn’t get caught. She ended up dropping out due to shame before Gtown expelled her, that’s $9 million down the tubes! A friend of a friend passively mentioned his CEO dad paying $3 million to the development board to “get my application fast-tracked” 🙄🙄🙄 In most “elite” universities it seems like it’s common practice to give the school’s development board a promissory note for the money, only paying the amount over years after successful admission. And 1/3 are always legacies. The game is rigged from the start…

Pisses me off. Im a single mom of a 15 yr old boy about to be 16 who plays soccer. I pray he gets a scholarship. Hes an honors student and there's a high amount of kids just like him fighting for the same spots.

@@FlowerGirlMy even if its a scholarship for sports the kid has to have good grades. The scholarship is for the school not the specific degree. so it really has nothing to do with what they are going to graduate for.. its a way of being a part of a school as a whole. Lots of colleges and universities have college teams that are a big deal and they need good players. But just because the kid played on the football team doesn't mean he's gonna go be a pro football player.

It was so sad- because their daughter stated over and over again that she wasnt an academic type of person and never wanted that life. She said she was interested in building her social media following and loved her make up videos. Seems like Mom was the one who needed her daughters to be a college grads, not Olivia or Bella.
My son served his country for 6 years to earn his education. Those get like the longest years of our lives. All that being said… I’ll take it. All the pride, truth and joy.
Olivia was already extremely successful with her influencer career. Mom shouldn't have pushed her to do something she clearly didn't want. She's still responsible for her part. I don't get why they went through all that trouble when both girls were already established.
Honestly I doubt these girls wanted to go, they probably felt pressured to go.

What annoys me most is that it's a pointless exercise if the kids aren't interested in tertiary education... it gets them into university, but the kid still needs to attend lectures, pass the subjects & graduate. If they aren't interested or motivated to study for that degree, they won't make it past 1st year... and that failure can have a detrimental effect on a person's self-worth. So you've _taken a university place_ from a worthy athletics applicant (and therefore impacted the uni's sports program)... _AND taken a place_ from a hard-working student who _wants_ that degree (negatively impacting the uni's performance stats)... _AND set your own child up to fail_ & destroy their self-confidence. Great parenting there. 🤦♀️
They pay for a degree too… or they cheat their way and I’m not talking about quizlit or chegg. I’m talking about paying people thousand of dollars monthly to do their homework. Many kids do it.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! I've seen a few videos on this and the Netflix doc but I don't recall ever seeing anything about how Mossimo defrauded his own parents! The fact that he doctored "evidence" connecting him to USC (the scene of the crime) is just bizarre! There's no way in hell that Bella and Olivia didn't know what was going on and every time I see that clip of Olivia saying she doesn't care about school, I just want to scream. She and her mom are beautiful, rich, and white which is why they won't ever get more severe punishment. It doesn't surprise me that black mother who used her father's address so that her children could go to a better middle school was sentenced to even more time than that bitch Lori!

I don't think it's quite fair to say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Because the tree is Mossimo, and he was instrumental, along with Lori in defrauding USC with the help of Rick. In other words Mossimo was just up to his old cheating tricks. He went from defrauding his parents that he was going to USC, made millions and then defrauded USC.
Olivia Jade was doing fine on her own, in that way she was a chip off the old block, she was doing well without going to school. Not that that was challenging her intellectually. Clearly she wasn't interested in intellectual challenge. Just business like Daddy. So that's the way I see the fruit not falling far from the tree. Otherwise this was the parents idea. And this Rick dude should definitely go to jail cuz he swindled everybody into the racket.
I agree that the girls knew that their parents were gaming the system. They didn't necessarily know how deep their parents were into this swindle, financially and with the doctoring of test scores. It does seem clear that the girls knew something about the rowing ruse. But remember they were sucked into this by their parent's egotistical desires for the girls to go to the University of Spoiled Children. Which is actually a good school, better now that this racket has been uncovered.

Oh this story frosts my cookies. My son just graduated from UCDAVIS with a degree in electric engineering. He worked hard and has a lot of student debt because Holy cow its expensive. Luckily, he already has a good job so hopefully that will make managing his loans. My point is he worked hard and we didn't cheat to get him in! Geez.
Our other son went to Chico State and same same same as his brother. He also has a good job. And he didn't cheat!

I feel a bit sorry for those girls of Lori Laughlins...how awful would it be to know your parents had to cheat to get you into a school that you never wanted to go to in the first place? Did they ever sit down with those girls and ask them what they wanted to do with their life?! That's just some bad parenting right there if you want my opinion!
What everyone seems to be missing, (I'm only 15 minutes into the video so this may be discussed) is that Olivia had expressed that she really had no desire to go to college on multiple occasions. So it appears that this is a case of parents trying to live vicariously through their kids. Sad.
As someone who really struggled with getting accepted into college this is really sad to hear about how privileged people cheat their way to the top.

I don’t think Olivia possess any more talent than any other young girl into fashion and make up. Not alot of talent there. She is quite shallow and cannot relate to the real world. Average looking at best and not the sharpest tool in the shed. This will follow her forever as it should. Never remorseful about any of it. Her tic told and blogs are littered with negative comments. Her following hadn’t really grown much and her sponsors are not top of the list. She will never be anyone much in Hollywood. She doesn’t have the talent or the brains for it. Of course the daughters knew of the bribing, they posed for the rowing pictures. Notice how her daughter said that she "probably won't be going to school much", as though she's not even worried a bit about passing her classes. Her attitude says " I'll buy my way through, no need to actually attend class"

My best friend since highschool graduated with a 4.7 gpa, trained extensively on a competitive HS swim team, and all kinds of extracurriculars etc. All while working full time through highschool. He knew he wanted to be a doctor and exactly where he wanted to go for it since childhood. I believe it was Brown. He was rejected and that was a huge deal. He’d worked so hard for it for so long. He was devastated. I can’t imagine if someone took his spot with a donation and didn’t even feel like being there.
He did end up becoming wildly successful anyways (as expected) but that school meant so much to him. I don’t doubt that stuff like this contributed to him being overlooked.

I didn’t know how wild this story really got. This was done so well!
I applied to a top college where my dad worked as a transfer student. They loss my transcript and denied me. I never considered asking him to figure this all out. My mom yes lol, my dad no. I didn’t even think to question the no. Literally they loss my transcripts. They got them. I got in. Most people who get into these schools are incredibly privileged. Some get that others not so much. My roommate was convinced she was poor when without financial aid paid for it all no loans. If that’s not privileged I don’t know what is.
It upset me to hear one of the daughters say that “she didn’t even know why she was going to college.” After the huge bribes her parents gave the school. That spot could’ve been given to someone else who worked hard for it. It’s such a waste.
Good Lord! I myself and many of the friends went to community college! I am now a registered nurse and it was hard work holding down a job and getting through my classes but I did it all on my own and am so proud of myself! Allowing kids and young adults to experience hard work this way isn't a bad thing! It's not going to damage your kids!! It may actually bring them pride and a sense of belonging and worth! The varsity blue's scheme brought them only shame and taught them what, how to point their fingers at their parents, throwing them completely under the bus, pretending as if it was all their faults, like they knew nothing when posing for sports they never played!! We always knew things like this happen everyday, and most likely is still happening, but to see it in the light, how greedy, ungrateful, and literally stupid do you have to be!!!!! Honestly, listing your daughter not only as a tennis player but to further take away spots from truly deserving minorities, listing them as African American, makes me want to puke!

As a european I don't understand why person with talent in sports has a place in prestige universties to go study things that has nothing to do with sports...
Because pro sports in the US begins in college/universities.

@freakboy220 Very good point! I think the difference might be that Rick Singer's clientele was prosecuted, so they know not to mess with him or they'll be put in the spotlight (again). Jeffrey Epstein's clientele has been protected, so the things they do in the shadows get to stay there. 🤷🏾♀️ Just my two cents.

When I was in the army the mantra was, “If you didn’t cheat you didn’t try hard enough.” That concept is endemic in our culture. Politicians, Wall Street bankers, and professional athletes are classic examples.
I had great grades, attendance with years of competitive softball & singing. However, I suffered major test anxiety and couldn't get accepted into any college I wanted because entry exams were terrible even with tutors & retests. I learned to accept my faults until this shit broke the news. All parties involved in this scandal made a mockery out of college and the hard work kids put into getting their school of choice.
Thank you for this video. As a first-generation college graduate in my family, I find this to be quite a malignant abuse of power and money.

This is infuriating not 3ven so much because they cheated but because they clearly are so unapologetic. Felicity Huffman has largely been forgiven because she seemed genuinely apologetic.

The thing is I was not surprised by any of this. At the time the scandal was breaking news, I was finishing my sophomore year of college. I went to a small school and as far as I knew, everyone there actually wanted an education. I've encountered folks from other schools that were just in college because their parents wanted it. These were pretty well off kids, so this whole scandal raises a major question for me: why? Olivia Jade specifically had a career prior to college. She had collaborations with big brands and a massive following. She was and, in my opinion, is still very successful. Why go to these lengths to get her into college? College is not for everyone because of the exclusivity and nature of it. I wish college was more open to people, but it simply is not. Olivia Jade would have been fine continuing her career as an influencer. It leads me to believe that this whole mess only happened because the rich have a deeply ingrained need to maintain reputation and prestige through collegiate acceptance. Olivia Jade expressed her desires to just graduate high school and move on with life. None of this would have happened if they hadn't gotten greedy, specifically her parents and the many other parents that dragged their kids into this.
The fact that the parents didn't spend that money actually making sure that their kids were college ready (college prep course, enriching activities, and other LEGAL stuff) tells you everything you need to know.
What makes me upset is the fact Lori’s career bounced back and the daughters never was touched ..at this point you can trust no one in that family because of the parents decision ..the dad scamming money from us own parents that’s pretty damn low and Lori just okay with that ..pathetic ..I’m just glad it all came to light and the world knows they aren’t and never were that “picture perfect” family

I feel the same. I have ZERO interest in these people anyway but now even more so. I would not purchase anything Olivia makes or watch anything with Laurie…and her husband never cared for his brand.
What is also says is that you can trust nobody around them...whoever is giving her work, for example. The biggest lesson is that the rich can commit crimes and not suffer any consequences. I wonder if Kelly Williams-Bolar will be able to bounce back just as well.

Even I in South Africa remember this scandal. It was wide and fairly covered in SA. Just remember this, there are many graduates outthere who are practicing and got into college through eye brows raising ways. This thing is very common even in South African universities or good schools. Money talks.

What's weird is that scouts for the major sports organizations (NFL, MLB, NBA) has tracked student athletes as early as little league. How they missed these mystery student athletes all of a sudden in the college roster and not raise any flags is odd. Then again, professional sports are not exactly famous for good ethics.
What women play in the NFL, MLB, or NBA? And how are their ethics in question for NOT scouting female athletes that don’t play in their league? This post doesn’t make a lIck of sense, no wonder you see this as “weird”.

When the news of this ugly “varsity blues” thing broke I was cringing that Loughlin couldn’t bear the fact that she didn’t birth intellectuals, but molded them to “be” that anyway. I could complain about my student loans, but I earned my way into and through that school. Loughlin’s try hard and criminal actions gave me the perspective that my student loans ain’t sh*t. I’ll pay ‘em off in due time with the same talent that got me admitted to this elite and “hot” school. #Trojan4Lyfe

Wow, thx for making this. So much I didn't know. Everyone focused on Olivia and Lori. There's Mossimo's influence and history of willingness to scam, I didn't even know about the older sister, how many other fancy colleges were involved, the main guy is still working with the FBI, and fortunately the mother's sentence was DEEPLY decreased after public outrage. Justice isn't blind.
I always get excited when I see a video from Josie…top notch editing and documentary style. I see all the work you put into these. Also, this scandal is really disturbing. It shows a lot of privilege. It’s disgusting that the bribery to falsify medical diagnoses happens…that’s one reason people often won’t take us seriously with mental health stigma or learning disabilities, anything different. People who a3use the system.

I watched most of this on a "whatever, people are selfish, greedy and insane" level until the contrast with how Kelley Williams-Bolar's case was handled (before the public outcry), and this most especially sparked a moment of visceral anger about class division in the justice system.
