The producers initially wanted Toshiro Mifune from the legendary Japanese movie Seven Samurai (1954) as Mr. Miyagi, but Mr. Mifune refused. I wonder how Mr. Miyagi would look like if Toshiro Mifune was Mr. Miyagi. Must've been so imposing because he was taller & broader compared to Pat Morita. Kreese would've looked less intimidating.
In documentary, Avildsen said that Mifune's Miyagi would be more about samurai way, honor and all that. He'd certainly be more imposing and even scary.
The irony, is Pat never actually knew martial arts in real life! I'd say, he made a pretty damn good living, as an actor, being less than a White belt- shows you don't need to be a great martial artist, to be an actor, and you don't need to be an actor, to be a excellent martial artist, of course, Bruce Lee was the exception.
It's actually nice that the producer wanted a 'real' Japanese actor. It kind of justifies why Morita had to put on that stereotypical accent because he is not a Japanese native.
I know people that have been guests on the show and the producers told them that Dave is the star - Dave gets the laughs. Which is apparent in his horrid interview style.
